I repled to a member who got an invitation in their INBOX and who had questions about avitars.   Posting the answer here for others who may have the same questions.

The issue with member invitiations is one I still do not understand.  This has varied from week to week over the last two months. Members should be able to login and post, but for some I had to go in and issue invitations to the board.  For a while the board was doing it automaticly to all new members.  This caused even more confusion because people did not know they had to check their inbox before being able to access the board.  Hopefully this is all behind us.  If you are able to post then there is no problem.

We did have avitars on but the board was grinding to a hault.  Since turning them off the board speed is running much better.  Aimoo is looking into what the connection is and what causes the problem.  To me the problem appears that the first message comes from one database, the replies from another and the user personlizations like avitars from yet another one.  The last being the total aimoo user database for ALL their customers and is shared amoung ALL the message boards.  Maybe that is what makes it very slow.   So for the moment we do not have avitars switched on because having them off seems to give us much better speed, all day long.

JM,

It would be nice to have the Avatar feature active, like many other message boards. Has Aimoo addressed the speed problem or will switching them on result in unacceptably slow speeds?

I'm pretty sure the speed issues have been resolved. For instance, they were never turned off on the "today's post" page, and once Aimoo got things fixed, it worked OK.

But then JM turned off even the "today's post". When I asked, he said that too many of the pictures were too risque. I never noticed that, myself.

I wrote a long reply to this, but it got lost and not posted.  So here is a short version.

1)  I don't have fine control on where avatars do and do not appear.
2)  BUT .....You can post your picture on your personal profile.

3)  We have all graphics off including avatars because there is not good control for the size of the displayed avatar, XXX x YYY, and because people can upload there own this messes up the display of the pages.
4)  Some users have no taste when it comes to avatars.

5)  Unfortunately we have many more men posting on this board.  I know more women read than post.  The problem is that some men glam on to the women thinking that if they post here they have something in common - - and therefore the women would be delighted to her from them.... NOT.   The few women who do post posting on this board are already feeling a little overwhelmed by the men and having every other post accompanied by a picture of their willy will probably make them even less likely to come back.

6)  Last, some users have reported that the amount of skin tone, in a ratio to overall picture size, causes some automated web blocking software to kick in for some users because the filter thinks it is porno.  This is one I did not expect at all, but it makes sense when they explained it.

So if you have personal pictures post them on your profile.

(Don't even get me started on the subject of the stupid piggy)

Thanks for the response and explanation. I understand the issues.
