OK, nobody really fits a particular body type and I realise that getting a swimsuit is fraught with difficulties for all women, but thoughts on this are welcome.

A friend needs the encouragement to find a nice one, but nothing too daring as she's very modest.

So her body shape is:

  • Fairly tall

  • Very slim, but has big and nicely shaped breasts in proportion to the rest of her

  • Narrow shoulders and a very small back/chest (not breasts though)

  • Very narrow waist

  • Wide hips in proportion, but flattish buttocks

  • Thin legs and arms

I suspect that she needs to take attention away from her very slim torso and narrow shoulders by emphasising her breasts. A racerback? As for the bottoms, I think anything goes, but a cheeky style will make her bottom look a bit fuller. I don't think she is ready for a thong yet.

Any suggestions?

The common wisdom is for wide people to wear vertical stripes, not horizontal, because vertical slim and horizontal make things wider.  The same optical principle can be applied to swimsuits.

A narrow horizontal bandeau top with a narrow horizontal very low boy-cut bottom might do the trick. The horizontal bands of fabric will emphasis the width of the bust and hips, and minimize the rest.

I did a quick image search to see if I could find something similar:  https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e0/8d/57/e08d57b2774d1fde8ad9d0ecdbb19a47.jpg

I think you may end up doing a mix and match, but try to keep the color and style the same so the color bands complement each other.
The more horizontal the edges of the matching bands the more the optical effect will work.

Thanks Jim. The picture is a pretty good match. My friend is even thinner and with slightly wider hips (proportionally at least). I think that would work, but personally I'm not so taken with the holy material. She might like it though.

I was not saying that spicific bikini, but the general idea of two horzontal strips. Personally I would go for a narrower low cut bottom. The narrower and the more parrellel the bands of cloth the wider it will look.

On of the most stunning examples of the double band look was a very tall blond skinny women one Halloween. She must have been an easy 6'4".  She wore two horizontal strips of gold cloth, one as the bandeau top and the other as the bottom.  The rest of her costume was just gold heels, gold wig and gold body paint. With the heals she looked close to 7 foot tall.  At the costume contest each participant is asked their name, or the name of their costume. She strode out on to the stage and pulled out a gold painted kids beach shovel, and announced she is a 'Gold Digger'. About brought the house down.

Obvious though it sounds, she needs to try on several different styles - even the random ones that might not work. Navy is often a good colour for not drawing attention, but remains stylish and sultry. String/tie side bikinis work well on many women - many Italian women of all ages happily wear them and look good regardless of their size. Always try at least two sizes of the same style. One that sits low can work for a flatter bottom. For the top it may be better to get the cups that are shaped and seamed rather than one flat piece of material. Quality counts - a women will notice cheap fabric and poor stitching - if it looks and feels well made, that is half the battle to feeling confident.

I realised you meant the idea Jim and I think that is really close to what would suit.

Tiggerix - I also agree that it's best not to have too rigid an idea of what to get. Navy is a great colour for nearly everybody. Black is overused because of the idea that it's slimming. She definitely doesn't want to wear anything more slimming!

Patterns would probably not appeal as she likes simple, classic lines and looks.

Tie sides definitely good I think, but as she's very self-conscious, anything that distracts or draws attention might be a problem.

Good quality is a must and she tends to buy the best of anything. I think she should avoid full coverage or bigger bottoms as that will emphasise her wider hips and make her look even more pear-shaped. Perhaps a frill around the bust would draw attention to her breasts which are her best feature perhaps and make her look a bit bigger on top to balance her out. Actually, if she wasn't so body shy she would be ideal to wear a very small thong or g-string, but that will never happen - at least in public!

Thanks for the tips guys.

@matchingthongs I'm around 180cm, 59kg and a UK6-8/US2-4/AUS6 (don't get me started on the variability of sizes). Stay away from one pieces and high waisted styles. We long gals should emphasize our length (to compensate for the lack of curves). I love bandeaus and wear an XS triangle top when I find one that I like. Otherwise for bottoms, low low low - hipsters with a narrow front to show off the abs. I have no problem recommending the WW Sailor Stripe in the brazilian cut or scrunch bum. Lots of combo colours to choose from. Also stay away from over sized triangle tops. Too big and them make you look androgynous. Hope that helps. Love Bren

@bbyrne78 Thanks for the input. My friend isn't as tall (probably about 175cm or a bit less) and possibly under 50kg. She did say that her BMI is right at the bottom of healthy. Many people today don't realise how slim a healthy BMI is and just insultingly call them too skinny because overweight is now normal! However, she is actually very curvy for such a slim woman i.e. she really does have hips and breasts. Not sure how that affects the advice? Thanks again.

I echo bbyrne's advice, narrow bandeau tops paired with a low cut bottom, and her advice, if using triangle tops to go small, xs or xxs. (Although comfort with micro triangle tops will depend a lot on what the women is comfortable wearing in public.) Depending on the women, even though small they may still need need to be cut with a bit of a cup or they just slide around. I was partying with some rather attractive and very slim women last night. Pool party and boat ride. The sort of mob where the young men drive Maseratis and the women get flown to Vegas or Paris. The consensus was xxs triangle tops on the longer girls. The other trend, even for some of the skinny ones, was bikini bottoms with a thong rear made of a network of spaghetti straps. Emphasized the curves. Like this: https://www.brazilianbikiniswimsuits.com/products/strappy-thong-brazilian-bikini-bottom In other notes, when the open launch has neon blue under deck lighting, in the dark fluorescent thongs pack a punch. Sorry boys, no pictures unless you are friends on facebook.

I wonder why no one piece suits? I definitely agree about low rise bottoms. She had a super slim waist and that should be emphasised I think.

Hi the reason for no one pieces is that taller girls feel like they are being cut in half by those things. They are not cut for people with longish torsos. at under 50kg I would pretty much stick to my original recommendation of the ww sailor stripe with a brazilian bottom or scrunch butt. The brazilian is better because you can always hike it up and make it into a thong if you want so more exposure. I would definitely go with an XS top because if she hasn't got big shoulders going with a S or M top even if she is more gifted in the bust area will make her look bouncier and more shapely. Good Luck and let me know if you need anything more. Love Bren

'why no one piece suits' - mainly because they are fairly pointless, sure there are some super sexy ones, but they just make a statement saying look at me, which is (probably) not what most girls want. Standard one pieces can also draw attention to areas that may not be perfect. A bikini on the other hand can be used to draw attention away from imperfections. You often see a lady with an oversize bikini bottom trying to cover the lower tummy and all that does is enlarge it. Wearing a smaller lower bikini bottom can shift attention away from the tum. Likewise some moderate bottoms will reveal lumpy bits at the base of the cheeks, whereas one cut smaller will allow the smoother parts of the cheeks to be more apparent. These draw attention away from the imperfections. OK, I have a preference for bikinis over one-pieces, but like a lot of us, I have done a lot of research on this...

@tiggerix True about one pieces. Great for lap swimming and diving of course, but they do draw attention when many of the women who choose them think they do the opposite . It's amazing what an art choosing bikinis is!

One pieces are really hard suits to wear. If you don't have the physique they will make you look less than what you desire. ideally with one pieces you need to size down which means that they will be snug and form fitting and if you aren't in shape they will push your conditioning all over the place and the result is pretty unsatisfying. Now there are one pieces that are geared to conceal and they would be great for most physiques out there but my advice was premised on a slim and tall physique which means high legged one pieces as opposed to the resort style one pieces that are designed to hide. if you are seriously thinking one piece, a cut out one piece by luli fama could be a decent option. expensive yes but they look great and have a bunch of colors which will make any tan pop.
