I hope to be at Bird Island then also.  I'll be the guy with a bicycle and trailer, a dark speedo style suit (or not :) ) and a fully textile wife. She doesn't know I frequent these  boards, so be cool if you see us.  If i am alone say hi.  I also have binoculars in order to keep look out for kids and the beach patrol. I like to have time to cover up.See you Father's day weekend

Good thing I had the binoculars on Monday.   Sunset Beach patrol ATV came roaring up way past the mailbox at high tide.  I had plenty of time to get shorts on.   For the record, as far as I know thongs and top free are legal on the reserve, but just make sure you are in between the state line and Sunset Beach's 1 mile extraterritorial Jurisdiction. I'm going to try to get out there again this weekend.

MartyL:  Yes thongs are 100% legal on Bird Island. Topless is questionable. While the NC state supreme court ruled that buttocks are not considered "private parts" they abstained from ruling whether female breasts were private parts since that was not germain to the particular case at hand. One can infer from their ruling however that it would seem like "private parts" only include organs used for reproduction & excretion (genitals & anus). However, in the actual statute it says that a woman breast-feeding is not considered indecent exposure, implying that the legislators intended other displays of female breasts would violate the statute. In fact, a couple years ago I saw a Brunswick County police SUV drive down the beach and told one woman to put her top back on. So until the higher courts rule on this matter topless women may need to exercise care on Bird Island too. Certainly it would make a very interesting equal rights case.

Whether it's a Sunset Beach patrol or the county police, when I lived in the area I preferred to wear a tiny g-string instead of going nude. No need for binoculars, and I could fall asleep on the beach without having to worry who is going to walk or drive by.

As for the Sunset Beach patrols, they have no arrest or ticketing authority on Bird Island. I'm not even sure they have the right to detain either on Bird Island. Remember when that freak pulled a knife on me the first thing I did after the incident was talk to the patrol. All he would do is give me the # for the police dept.

I had not seen or heard about ssb code enforcement coming that far out in a few years. I also remember the times the cops just drove on past you.  I just don't have the body for thongs, so a h.i.s. speedo-style with @1" sides will have to do.  As my cousin likes to say browned fat looks better than white fat. :)

Only once did I see a SSB patrol drive past the mailbox on his ATV. In fact it was also at high tide. There was nobody else around so I went for a little walk from my blanket (which was just beyond the mailbox) back towards Sunset Beach where the dunes begin. On my way back to the blanket I was near the mailbox and I looked behind and there he was driving past the usual turnaround spot. Rather than run back to the blanket and look suspicious I just kept walking the normal pace. As he was driving past I just turned and waved and he waved back, so there was no problem with my g-string.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Date Posted:06/07/2013 09:42:26Copy HTML

What I use to do when I lived in that area is park at the main lot at Sunset Beach and rent a bike at Julie's (you'll see all the bikes out front when you arrive at Sunset Beach. If all the spots are taken in the main lot then there's the alternate parking lot on the main road on the left after you cross over the bridge but before you hit the beach. Also if you do rent a bike at Julie's you can park in their private lot for free. If all those options are exhausted then you can pay $5 to park in the lot next to the main lot at Sunset. All of those parking options of course leave you farther from Bird Island, but those are the only ones available if the lots at the end of the other road you referred to are taken.

If you do ride a bike from Sunset to Bird you'll definitely need to check the tide charts, use the link below. The beach is firm enough to ride between 2 hours after a high tide and 2 hours before the next high tide.

I'll be going to Bird Island for the first time this weekend. I'm wondering if people can still wear skimpy swimwear there. I recently bought a skimpy pair of bikini brief trunks from n2n and want to know if I'll still be in good company when I go there. Thanks!

You will be fine there. I was there a few weeks ago. On a weekend. Not many people laying on the beach. Nudity is no allowed. Although a couple of guys were pushing the limits.Beautiful spot.

Being nude at Bird Island with like minded folks is about the only limit I push, though I may drive 60 in a 55 zone.  In this case to quote a line from the '60s.  The law is wrong man. I may get there for a bit this week. I've got some yard work to do at my property down there.   @ 3 hours work that will mean a 3 day sojourn at the beach 😎

I'll be in Wilmington in October.  Would like to head down to Bird Island for a day trip.  What kind of weather conditions can I expect in late October?  Also, will I be the only one there or can I expect to see others?  Probably wear a thong or g-string.

October can be very nice.   I've been swimming as late as mid-November, but it can also be cool.  It is just too soon to tell.  One problem is that the winds that time of year tend to be from the North, which is over the sound and marshes which means insects can be bad, especially the biting flies.Lester

Hi all, I live in North Carolina and plan to try to visit Bird Island a couple times this summer.  Last year was the first time thonging and visiting clothing optional beaches and I have found it quite exhilarating and wanting to find more opportunities to have that freedom.  My next trip will be to Haulover Beach in Florida for some clothing optional time. I'm taking my wife along who might not partake in the situation but I surely will. I'll be spending some time in Myrtle Beach with the family this summer and will try my hand at Bird Island as well for a afternoon or two. We've been to Sunset Beach many times and have always heard about nude sunbathing at Bird Island but never seen that or even thongs, but I will surely be out there this summer!

CK, Look forward to seeing you.If you are walking the beach dressed like a textile, people will cover up until they know you and know you won't freak out at the sight of skimpy to no attire.  Best bet is to find a place and park, observe the surroundings, then strip off when it feels right.Thongs ARE legal on the NC preserve which starts at the sign @ 1/2 mile west of the 40th crossover and runs to almost the stone jetty which is SC.Lester

Parking at 40th crossover has always been tight.  Soon it will get worse as they are resurfacing Main and redoing the right of way.   Residents were told to remove all landscaping along the 5ft shoulder of Main on both sides of the road. It may really cut down on access.  On a cheerier note the Town Council is finally investigating the ownership rights of the folks trying to develop Sunset West.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

I was there last year. Thongs are permitted, but unfortunately it's no paradise. You've got a long walk from 40th Street. The flies bite. There's a non-stop stream of elderly walkers—people who look right out of a Lands End catalog, with matching attitudes to boot. And you'll likely be the only one in a thong, depending on the day. At least that was my experience. Granted, it's awfully pretty. And the Kindred Spirit Mailbox is so cool; check it out!

For me though, Huntington Beach State Park was a much more comfortable thonging venue. Close parking, wide beach, bathrooms and outdoor showers right there. Still, I was the only person in a thong, and it wasn't free, but I felt more like I added to the beach, like how all the different people in New York add to the city. Whereas at Bird Island I felt more like a freak show on parade. It could be all in my head. Just my perception.

I had a pleasant surprise this morning.  As I was crossing the walkway on 40th street on Sunset Beach, I saw a woman wearing a thong.  She was wandering around  taking pictures of her kids.  This was on Sunset Beach proper and it was a moderate thong, I was very surprised indeed. Lester

Hi all,

My family and I spent the week of Memorial Day in North Myrtle Beach.  There is no thonging down there so I was able to break away a few mornings and head up to Bird Island.  Thanks to my supportive wife who stayed with our teenagers for a few extra hours a few days, I was able to make the best out of a somewhat stormy week here on the Carolina coast.

Walking on the beach in your favorite thong, with your feet in the cool water, and the sun on your buns was very tranquil.  I loved it!!!

Once you get to the Bird Island beach area and you setup for the day you are practically by yourself (aside from the walkers and cyclist) as all week there was no one setup closer to me than 200 yards.  All told for the 3 days I went, there were less than 10 others that were setup on the beach once you get to the Bird Island area.  I didn't see any others in thongs but did talk to one of our fellow ThongBoard members who was a local and would ride his bike out to almost the end of the island and setup in his normal place.  I happened to setup close to him the first day since I had walked so far South without knowing it.  We talked and traded stories for a while after he saw I was thonging.

I would say that the other people who are out for a walk or bike ride on the beach as tolerant and almost always ignored me as if I wasn't there.  They are mostly couples/groups in their 50-70s with some 30-40 year olds once in a while out for a ride or nice walk.  I did get the biggest approving grin and straightforward gawk from one lady walking by though, but she was one out of hundreds that showed any outward interest.  There are many times in which there wouldn't be anyone close by which gave me opportunity to change my suit or to hit the water and cool off as I wore a yellow thong one day and it is pretty much transparent after getting out of the water.  Now that I know that I don't have to worry about transparent when wet suits here, I have my eye on a new Cantaloupe colored Micro thong from Muscleskins....

A few words about the landmarks for the island.  The Bird Island Reserve sign is about 2' x 3' and is about a 20 minute walk from the car if you park on the streets on the South end of Sunset Beach.  The packed sand beach makes it ann easy walk or bike ride.  Some of the posts above say that you can look for the start of Bird Island when you see the turn around point from the tire marks of the patrol SUVs as their jurisdiction from Sunset Beach ends and they would turn around there and head North.  Well, while their jurisdiction may end, they certainly have been patrolling all the way South to the end of the Bird Island several times a day.  Therefore, don't use the tire marks as one of your landmarks as I did the first day.  By the way, the patrols clearly saw me walking in my thong and just waived in return as they passed by so nothing to worry about  there.  From the sign on South, you are legal in thongs (at least until you get to the South Carolina boarder by the jetty).   I was walking and carrying my cooler and chair on my back, so the other days I visited, I walked just a couple hundred yards further South of the sign and setup closer to the dunes to leave room for the water / tide to come in.  The preverbal "Kindred Spirit mailbox" is quite a ways more South towards the end of the Island and I made sure to sign in there the first day.
I will be back there this year and for years to come as I am making thonging one of my "hobbies" for my extra time.

A good long weekend, Finally got the chance to be at the beach with nice weather.    I discovered who the lurker with the bike is, and he should get a thong so his butt won't be so white from sitting in his chair while waiting for the walkers to go by.  :) I only saw one other person wearing a thong all weekend, an older gentleman that had to have walked several miles in his thong.  He walking with a lady who was fully covered in shorts & a shirt.  Saturday afternoon was spent in a thong in what I call the low dunes which was @ halfway to KS mailbox from the 40th crossover. Between the  threat of T-storms and my wife not feeling great, we decided to not go all the way out, so my thong was required because of all the walkers. Sunday I happened to be in my thong when a lady came up to ask questions about my bike trailer.  I got up to talk to her and she didn't bat an eye.   Yesterday afternoon (Monday)  I didn't thong much. Didn't want or need to, naked is much better.

I thonged at Bird Island again this summer. The beach was almost completely deserted; afternoon thunderstorms had cleared everyone out. The solitude was lovely. I walked and walked and walked. At one point, I sat in the tide. I was in-the-moment, simply enjoying being alive, mindful of how pleasant the warm water felt against my skin. It's a nice memory.

Yesterday (1/13/17) I was out on Bird Island and could have thonged if I had remembered one. I did get some nude sunning in. I did wander around to pick up some trash wearing a HIS brief.  There was one guy in what looked like a gstring abit away from us that I felt a little sorry for.  Of  all the miles of  beach,  a mother and young daughter decided to start shelling right in front of him.

There's a lot of foot traffic up and down the beach in the early morning. So the best time would be late morning and afternoon. However, some days if you wait to arrive by late morning then you won't get a parking spot.  Best area is half-way between the mailbox and the rock jetty.

I would wear a thong or G-String at any time!!!   That is the best thing about the beach there.  I'm planning on going out there during the week and weekend in a couple weeks. I can't wait to try on my new Muscleskins Poser and Jovana G-Strings!  I wouldn't hesitate to wear them anytime as it is legal there.  Now for nude...  from my understanding it is not legal but no authority takes the initiative to take action.  I think most people would be discreet in any case. The Sunset Beach patrol did go up and down all of Bird Island last year though.

I was down there last Friday (the 24th) and had the beach past the mailbox all to myself, except for the morning foot traffic as lindros stated previously. I thonged all morning while fishing and picking up trash along the beach. No one seemed to pay any attention except for a local lady who stopped for a friendly chat. After lunch I ditched the thong and remained nude for the remainder of the afternoon. It was a beautiful day, no bugs, a little breeze, and plenty of sun. It's supposed to be windy today, so I'm going to opt out this time.

I went to Bird Island on April 9th a Sunday.  I don't see how anyone would have the privacy to hang out nude.  There were a lot of people walking around.  Maybe it was bc the weather was nice so the walk from Sunset to Bird Island wasn't too bad.  I did hang out for a bit in a weed leaf print speedo that one guy who walked down a sand dune commented on.  Lol. Maybe when the weather is warmer so many people won't make it down that far.  I passed the mailbox and when I came to the rocks I walked on top of where they start and called the beach line back around.  There was also a lot of boaters in the Bay Area it makes there.  I will be going back later in the year.  Would anyone care to meet up there and hang out for a bit on the beach?
