Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

So we were in town for a sudden funeral in the Myrtle Beach area and and decided to make a run up to Sunset Beach. After riding the bikes down the beach all the way to the jetty and on the other side of the rock jetty there was a small amount of foot traffic but we just did not have the time to hang out on the beach. But I could definitely see where going nude on the beach with a bit of caution is  possible. Of course we saw the mailbox and read a bunch of the notes in the notepads.
And the other thing i noticed, EVERY ome.of the the people we passed on the beach, either spome or atleast waived.  We dont get that on Folly.

I must have missed you guys.  I was with my wife under a white cabana between the mail box and jetty in front of the taller dunes yesterday afternoon.

During nice weather, I am on Bird Island several times a week.  It is my observation that foot traffic is minimal during the period around high tide. Over the past few years, the number of people using BI for sunning and relaxing seems to be declining. Some days, I am the only person sitting between the mailbox and jetty, especially on weekdays.

The week before Easter, there was a high amount of foot traffic going to the jetty. I have never seen so many walkers on BI. It was like a parade. I am hoping this is not an indication of what the summer will be like.

When visiting BI, I always recommend being discreet. Foot Traffic can be coming from either direction. Boaters anchored on the other side of the jetty walk over to the mailbox or to swim in the ocean. With the eroding dunes, people standing at the mailbox have a clear view of much of the area behind the dunes. This is also true for people standing on top of the dunes near the jetty and looking toward SB. Occasionally, someone collecting seashells thinks their treasure is near the area you are sunning.

Also, there is the ATV that rides down toward the jetty from Sunset Beach. It is impossible to know when and how far they will travel on BI. It is my understanding that they do not have any jurisdiction on BI, but I recommend being friendly towards them. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on BI. I look forward to seeing you there.

Hey ThongNC    That was me you spoke to yesterday.  I see you found the forum and joined us.
I did see the white cabana way towards the jetty.  Saw it on my beach walk (almost got down there) in my G but I had set up my chair closer to the Reserve sign.  It was a great day for a stroll.

I was down for the day last Friday situated between the mailbox and jetty. The beach was empty except for an occasional walker/jogger, so I spent most of the day nude (covering when necessary of course) and only wearing my thong when strolling the beach. I didn't encounter any other thongers or nudist all day, which I thought was unusual for such a beautiful day. I must have been the only one fortunate enough to have a day off. Hope to be back in a couple of weeks.

It was a beautiful day yesterday (Tuesday) at the Bird.  I had plenty of time  nude and went for a couple of long walks in my thong when walkers were present. Bird _Island_Guy set up nearby and we had a couple of nice chats. On one of my walks, I came across a couple in the dunes just off a trail. She was topless and a bit concerned about being so,  so I just told her that I'm usually nude unless I may come across a textile inadvertently.  Coming back, she was totally nude, and he was still in bored shorts.  We chatted a bit, turned out that they came out in a cute little runabout boat.  As I left, I asked if they minded if I went nude, so off went my thong.  Unfortunately, I had to leave early to go to a meeting.

I was there yesterday. 15th. Was a nice day, but because the wind was from the north west, there were a lot of biting flies from the sound. They drove my wife home early. I went for a long walk on the Little River side and by the time I got back the wind had shifted and The flies were gone.

I was there 3 times last week and 2 times this week, so far. Today, I was the only one sitting on BI for the longest time. I arrived around high tide and stayed 4 hours. During that time, less than 10  people walked down the beach. A M/F couple pulled a beach cart down and continued walking over to the jetty. Later, a man rode a bike down. He had a back pack and sat on the rocks. The others either walked to the mailbox or jetty and walked back. Around 4, I decided it was time to put my shorts and shirt on and pedal back to Main St. I plan to be there tomorrow, since the weather is great.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

I like to be on BI during high tide because the hard packed sand that people like to walk / ride on is underwater. It is difficult to walk that distance in the soft sand. During high tide, the beach is smaller but it is a shorter distance to get to the water. If someone does walk by, they will be closer to you since the beach is smaller. Today, the tidal coefficient was 46, a low number, so high tide was approximately 4.4 ft. During extremely high tides, the tide can be 7.0 ft, which leaves very little beach. I have been there when I have had to sit on the bottom edge of a dune to escape the water. Unfortunately, I sat with my textile friends near the gazebo today, so I do not know about the foot traffic at the far end of BI today.

Well we made it out to the beach sunday and it was a beautiful day, but was low tide so, many walkers and bike riders out so not much time to thong and sun the bums as we had hope for. Maybe next time...

If you are on the portion of Bird Island that is part of the NC Coastal Reserve , thongs are legal and there is no need to cover up.   Topless is also legal.  Not common, but legal.  I hope to be there some this weekend.   After I get my chores done , of course.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the info on Bird Islamd.  I live inland but go to Sunset and Ocean Isle almost every weekend during the spring/summer/fall.  I spend a lot of time fishing and have been to the inlet side of the island on the SC side.  I was unaware of the thong area on the NC side.  I look forward to checking it out soon, I've never worn a thong in public before but the freedom of the nudist life intrigues me and I guess a thong is as close as I can get around here.  Anyways, look forward to getting out there soon and maybe crossing paths with some of you!

I was out today for a few hours and I have to say my opinion of BI has changed.  Tide was coming in so there wasn't a parade of walkers and riders.  Saw one other gentleman out there fishing in a thong and sometimes less.  All in all, a great day and I look forward to many more this summer.

I was out at BI the last two days for a few hours.  Steady traffic of walkers around lunch time, but after 1, it steadily declines, even with the tide receding.  Both days there were at least a couple of others enjoying the sun in either thongs or nude.  Rangers seem to come down once a day to make sure you are wearing something.  I am planning on heading out Thursday morning and staying through high tide until I can ride back on the hard packed sand.  I will be curious if the tide reduces foot traffic because I would love to be able to swim!

Just a heads up.  If you park along West Main in Sunset Beach, make sure that your wheels are off the pavement and your vehicle does not obstruct the bike lanes. The police ARE ticketing for that!!! Lots of traffic on the Island today. More thong than nude.

The weather was very overcast on Bird Island today. I was there from 9 am until 2 pm. The sun tried to peak out once or twice. There were 2 brief rain showers. Low tide was at 10:35 am. During the entire time, there was a stream of walkers, bike riders, and people pushing baby strollers. It reminded me of the week before Easter. People continued walking and biking during the rain showers. A younger man sat down not too far away. He said he was on vacation and visiting the area. It was just the 2 of us sitting on BI. The weather for the next few days does not look promising for a good beach day.

I recently moved away from the coastal area and went home this past weekend.  Had planned on stopping by the beach but was "iffy" about going.  Glad I decided to end up going!
I had went back in April for the first time and it was dead. This time around there were numerous people there.  I could tell at first that people were trying to figure out who the "new" guy was. Everyone seemed to have known each other because they were all socializing.  I finally decided to drop shorts and wear my speedo.  Later on after that I saw a few people get nude and I did as well when it was just me and a couple of people.
I really enjoyed this visit and will be back soon. People there seemed friendly and even chatted a bit before I left.   Will be back in the next week or two.

Welcome back.  I was probably the first or second one nude. I was with my wife under the white cabana. She was the one buried in her book in the too modest swimsuit. Were you the guy with the camera & camera bag?  If so, that is what was making the regulars skittish.  It did get to be pretty enjoyable, especially on Sunday afternoon even with all the wind.  Our highlight was Saturday night helping the turtle people birth them babies.  Sunday going home on my bike , I went from the mailbox to the 40th crossover without peddling once, the chair on my back acting as a sail, propelling me to speeds in excess of 15 mph.

I did see you guys!  I had black shorts and dropped them and got some sun in a weed leaf print speedo. That wasnt a camera and camera bag, it was my cooler!  But that explains why I was getting looks!   Hahaha.  I had my phone plugged up into a battery charger at times so maybe that is why it looked like a camera also.
I had a great time and might be going back this weekend with a buddy of mine.  Next time I mightbring a different cooler!

Trip report: It was quite hot and sunny; easily 90°. I walked to about halfway between the Bird Island sign and the jetty. It was the location of a gorgeous sandbar and tidepools. I bathed in the tidepools for hours. It was incredible. Though I was, again, slightly unnerved by the walkers: what seemed like a long procession of walkers. Mostly older couples wearing conservative attire. Maybe I need to walk all the way to the jetty.

Thongalatic, If you are in a thong you are ok anywhere past the Coastal Reserve sign to just before the jetty .  Their problem, not yours.  I tend to like to go past the mailbox because many walkers use that as a turn around point.   If you get too near the jetty, you are in South Carolina, where thongs are against the law (but realistically there is no enforcement) and there are a lot of boat people who anchor their boats on the other side and bring their kids over to swim in the ocean.

Hello all, I will be down to the beach for Labor Day weekend and plan on Saturday and Sunday mornings getting out there for a few hours as my family doesn't always get the early start on the days.  I will probably mix it up where I set up again, one day closer to Sunset Beach side and the other day down by the mailbox.  I plan on wearing a g-string both days and doing a good bit walking up/down the beach to get the sun on both sides.   If we haven't met and you're down there, flag me down as I'd love to chat.
Who else may be out there that I haven't met?

I've been thonging at the lake or the back deck the last couple months so I am really looking forward to getting back to the Zanido that Bird Island is...

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Overall, the beach is in good shape. There was some erosion of the dunes and beach. The tide crashed at the base of the dunes and created a shelf in the dunes. Over the past few days, high tide has been coming up to the base of the dunes, which leaves little beach. On Tuesday, low tide will be in the early afternoon, so riding a bike and sitting on the beach should be fine.

Bring lots of fly spray. Winds are supposed to be from a northerly direction. That means it picks flies off the sound side. The flies drove my wife and me off the beach.
