As Kiwis prepare to attend the annual Wellington Sevens, nobody will be allowed to wear Borat's 'mankini' this year.

The Rugby Sevens, an international rugby tournament, is held every year in Wellington, NZ, attracting over 30,000 supporters to 16 international teams. The event is always a sell-out and most people turn up in fancy dress.  

And, following the success of Sascha Baron Cohen's "Borat: the Movie" recently, dozens of Kiwi males choose his neon 'mankini' swimsuit to wear to the match, at the Westpac Stadium.

Last year they were allowed to wear the skimpy thong-style suit. But this year the police have slapped a ban on wearing the lurid outfit.  A police officer appearing on New Zealand television pleaded with fans to have "a sense of decency" as police pledged to turn anyone away wearing one of the swimsuits.

Could this be true?  This article from England indicates that the British Rowing Team made a video in which one athlete wears the Borat Mankini thong, and sales of these thongs on Amazon skyrocket.  Link to article is:  http://newslite.tv/2008/08/21/borat-mankini-thong-is-amazon.html.

It might be true that slings are selling well, but I would wonder why? The purpose of that thong on Borat was to make fun of a man who would wear such an outfit. It was basically shock comedy. This has led to many videos on YouTube of men wearing the Borat thong to be funny. That might be a reason why they are selling so well, but it wouldn't be a reason I would be happy about.

The SUN news paper in the UK reports:
TWENTY Borats dressed in thongs took Wembley Stadium by storm, ahead of England’s clash with Kazakhstan.

The lookalikes arrived on The Sun’s open topped bus to greet fans turning up for the match, complete with black wigs and handlebar moustaches.

Covering their modesty was a special England version of the thong worn by Sacha Baron Cohen in his hit comedy film.

The Sun has teamed up with cancer charity Orchid to raise awareness of prostate cancer among men. Our band of Borats handed out leaflets and wristbands as thousands of supporters swarmed the home of English football.

Onlooker James Matteo, 34 from London, said: "It’s hilarious, some of them are dead ringers for Borat. I’m not sure what the Kazakhstan fans will make of it."

Doesn't this just encourage the perception that men in thongs are "funny"? I don't like it one bit.

Recently somewhere in a waiting room I was flipping thru a newer issue of "Us" magazine.  It had Jesse James on the cover "She married a Monster"

Anyway there was an article "Is he undateable?"  They had I think 10 points for girls to see if their guy was "undateable" whatever that means.  Well one point was "Wears a Mankini".  Said something like " the banana hammock screams look at me, I need your attention.  Not only is it not easy on the eyes...."

They had a picture of John Mayer standing there in his Borat slingshot thong.

I doubt any men's magazine would have a similar laundry list of "undateable" characteristics on women.
