I'm in Pinellas and haven't worn out the beaches here yet!  Maybe someday to Caspersen.

We were out yesterday (Thursday) and had arrived late, at about 4:00 and stayed till 7:30. It was a beautiful day, sunny with very few clouds. Quite breezy with the wind out of the SSW at about 8-10mph, Gulf was a bit rough 1-2' and the water temp was perfect at over 82 degrees. Camped very close to our spot was a textile couple that didn't leave until just after 6:00 and other than them, we only saw a couple of single males. Once they left we had the beach to ourselves and we stayed late to take advantage of that:) WE finally found a decent sized sharks tooth, the tides and wind have not been very cooperative lately, I was using a tooth catcher in the surf and Candy was sorting through what I brought up. We still have not gained any beach back at all, and have not seen the undulating height of sand at the waters edge that in the past is a sign the beach is growing. There is still plenty of dry sand at high tide but it would be nice to get back to post-Sandy dimensions. I don't think we will be out on Sunday, Mother's Day, but next week we may have a couple of days out during the week.
Happy Thonging!

Yesterday was the first Tuesday we have had for a beach day this year, we started out under a bit of a raincloud and finished the day the same way:) The forecast had been nothing but good weather and when we left and saw the clouds to the east we thought it was just the  "summer weather pattern" always dark to the east. The wind was out of the ESE and that is where the weather came up from, very little breeze on the beach, so we had some issues with bugs up by where we sit, the Gulf was flat calm and perfect temperature for a hot day. I don't think candy has spent that much time in the water all this year combined:)  So glad that we arrived early, we stayed until the weather chased everyone off the beach around 3:00 pm. We had a great day out just the same, a half dozen people to the south of us and a couple of people to the north. Very few textile walkers. We saw a couple that we had not seen in ages, since they moved to Tampa, we found out that they still come down and visit the beach so we were very happy to hear that and to be able to catch up. The last few times out there have been new people on the beach every time, I don't think they are finding the beach by our blog here, but its nice to see new faces.

Steve and Candy: Many, many thanks for your excellent writing over the years. I had the honor of starting this thread in October 2007. At the time I was a snowbirder and could only get to Caspersen in the height of the season. From the first time I saw the beach as mostly undeveloped and unspoiled, I was in love with it. I went as frequently as I could over the next few years and even more when I became a year 'round resident until back problems prevented me from the long hike to the thong area. A little over 4 years ago, I had major back surgery and it took me 3 years to begin to recover. At which time I was stricken with kidney disease. It is only in the last few weeks that I have had the limited stamina to go to Nokomis Beach. But, I miss my thongs! I hope that in a few months my stamina will improve to the point that I can go to Caspersen again. Maybe you will have a moment to say, "Hello," to this elderly man. In the meanwhile, I will enjoy it vicariously as I have for the last years through your great reporting.

Hello Joe, We were sad to hear about your health problems and we hope that your recovery allows you more freedom to do as you wish. Thank you for starting this thread, I wish we would have found it sooner:) I just finished reading all of your posts, most made me smile, I didn't realize that our beach reports were so similar:) We had probably been going to Caspersen for over 3 years before ever meeting anyone on the beach and then finding this thread and this venue. We used to always stop at the "cut" on our way back from Stump Pass and take a walk on the beach, just as we would stop at Palmer Point (and still do) on our way back from Big Pass. Lately we mostly just go to Caspersen and spend our day there. The beach will always have a "rep" because of the going's on at the trails by the parking lots which is very sad. It is too bad the media cant define the activities in those terms. I do think that the 18 arrests last year, including a m/f couple who were both City employees has curtailed the nefarious activities by the parking lots.  I will beg to differ with you, in that topfree is legal in Sarasota county (not within the City) as are thongs and G-strings. What is illegal is lewd behavior in public. We have been with several other couples on a number of occasions when Law Enforcement has passed us on the beach, all the women were topfree with thongs and the men were all wearing thongs. We received nothing but polite hellos from the officers on all occasions. Nowadays when we see LE on the beach our only worry is that someone may have fallen ill or be in trouble, it was the former the last two times this had occurred.

On a lighter note:)  This year we have heard more comments about our blogging the beach conditions than in the entire time we have posted here, all positive and both on the beach and messages here as well as posts like yours and Brian's. We would love to say hello on the beach someday! And thank you all for showing your appreciation:)
Happy Thonging!

The Gulf has not been this nice in over a year! Gorgeous day yesterday (Monday) strong and gusty breeze out of the E left the Gulf flat calm, and no rain lately left it clear. Visibility wasn't anything to write home about but enough to snorkel and to give the water its gorgeous color:) We arrived early and had the beach mostly to ourselves maybe 6-8 other people out and very few textile walkers. The bad news is that we are still losing beach:( High water mark is now a shelf about 2' tall almost all the way up by the dunes. Water temp was just over 78 degrees and felt perfect for a hot a sunny day. Lots of sharks teeth out and the lack of textile traffic made for a carefree day walking the beach. The lack of wind allowed the biting flies an opportunity to camp with us, we spent most of the day by or in the water. This coming Memorial Day weekend is typically when we see the most people on the beach and that is a lot of fun.

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! We were out all Friday and it was a gorgeous and breezy day:) Wind was out of the NW steady 10-12 with gusts occasionally, gulf was not too rough at first and then grew to almost 2', some seaweed present. Gorgeous sunny day and we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. One group camped to the south, all regulars and thanks to one of them that reads this blog we now know just about all of them :)  We arrived just after noon and stayed till 6:00 pm, got just a little too much sun:) Tide was going out all day until 4:00 and the Gulf is over 82 degrees now. Sharks teeth were out, but nothing spectacular yet this year, it is still early. We watched a dolphin fishing, for what seemed like an hour. (S)he was fishing hard between the sand bar and shore, zig zagging and moving fast. Then a large Manatee with a calf came by, moving fast against the shore current. Friday was our only day out for this weekend and it was awesome! We would like to remember all those who fell in service to this country and thank all of those who have served or are serving and we hope that everyone enjoys their weekend!

We had a beach day yesterday (Tuesday) and thought that with the overcast weather and forecast for rain in the afternoon we would have the beach to ourselves.  Instead we saw more textile walkers than we would have thought possible on such a day, and only 3 other thongers:) Overcast all day long, very light (too light) breeze out of the SW, Gulf was flat calm and about 80 degrees, we had to set up at the waters edge to avoid biting flies. We arrived around noon and stayed till 4:30, didn't get the beach to ourselves until after 3:00.  Candy finally saw her first snake, tow different ones actually:) She hates snakes and I don't talk about the ones that I see, they are super shy. The first was a very large yellow rat snake and the second a black snake, both awesome tenants:) Then on our way to leave she saw a huge fruit rat, lol, we are used to seeing a lot of wildlife, but mostly it's marine life. An interesting beach day, to say the least.

Great day at the beach on Thursday. Lots of sun, refreshing water, & gentle breezes. I got there early (8:45am) and set up in my usual spot about 100 yards or so south of the last entry staircase. Crowd was very light, had no issues in my g-string. No others wearing thongs up in this area. Unfortunately had to leave early around 1pm.

What a great day yesterday (Friday) turned out to be! The weather forecast never looked good, but the day turned out sunny and nice. Not a drop of rain! Arrived about 12:30 and stayed until almost 8:00, the Gulf was a bit rough 1-2" and the wind was out of the west, 10-15 strong enough to keep the bugs at bay:) Gulf water temp is just over 85 and felt great! The tide had been very high and was going out all day, didn't find any great sharks teeth but a bunch of small ones. We had the beach mostly to ourselves, we saw 3 single males (one that reads our posts here) and there were only 4-5 textile couples that walked by us. Two couples stopped and chatted, one was a couple that we see regularly and the other couple was new to the beach. A wonderful day and we made it back home without a drop of rain:)

LOL! the teeth that we find are between 4 and 5 million years old:) If you are worried about a live shark encounter, based on marine research, do not go swimming in salt water within 100 miles of Tampa Bay. We aren't worried, they typically don't like eating people after the first taste, lol.

The Atlantic coast of Florida appears to be the most dangerous for shark attacks, and especially Volusia county (central east coast) and the beach of New Smyrna, which has been rightly nicknamed the "shark attack capital of the world". Indeed, New Smyrna has more recorded incidents (210 attacks between 1882 and 2008) per square mile than any other beach on Earth. In the past few years, shark attacks along this beach  have increased dramatically. In 2007, notably, 17 of the 112 shark attacks worldwide, have occurred at New Smyrna Beach. However, most bites are fairly minor ones (some victims even drive themselves to hospital) and none of these attacks have been fatal.
You are most likely to get bitten if you are wearing a black and white bathing suit. Sharks' vision system is adept at picking up contrast (like the silver flash of a fish darting) and they probably strike at suits with high-contrast patterns for this reason.
You are most likely to get bitten if you swim during a new moon or a full moon. Tides are highest, and the lunar cycle may influence sharks' reproductive and behavioral patterns.

The green slime is back:( We were out yesterday (Monday) and with the exception of the green slime being back it was a gorgeous day. Stiff breeze out of the west 12-15 mph and the gulf was a bit rough at 2'+ and looked like it was going to keep building. Candy didn't go in the water at all and just used the shower. This is the same green slime that started us to bring the shower out in the first place. The beach was mostly empty, one other couple and a half a dozen single males. It was the first time this year we had seen the other couple and one of the single males that stopped to say hi. We arrived late and stayed even later, by the time we left around 8:00 pm we had the entire beach to ourselves. Very few textile walkers out during the day and the good news is that it seems to be a pattern this year:) We had just returned from a short vacation where I bought a new thong that I wore yesterday, Candy likes it a lot, typical for us it was on clearance and the only one like it that we saw. We will take some pics and post them soon.

Hello everyone, we hope your 4th of July weekend went well:) Ours was forecast for rain on Sunday and the afternoon turned out nice and we went to the beach, rather late, arrived around 1:30 and only stayed till 4:00. Never set up gear just floated in the water with our "table". No wind at all, Gulf was flat calm and 90 degrees, fairly clear, about 2'+ of visibility. Very few textile walkers out and not many umbrellas out at all really. We were surprised but it was probably due to the morning weather and the forecasts.

The beach yesterday (Saturday) was absolutely perfect.  We arrived about noon and stayed to about 7:00 PM.  Another couple set up just south of us and a walk-in only couple a little south of that.  The parking lot was packed and tents abounded by the stairs.  However a relatively short walk (3/4 mile)  down the beach yielded a long expanse of very sparsely populated beach.  The water was warm (about 90) and pretty clear.  Not many textile walkers.  An afternoon breeze kept things cool and bug-free.  Retired to Sharkey's at 7:30 and tried out Fins.  Expensive but outstanding food, presentation and service.  We are nudists from Pasco and get our beach fix here from time to time... me more than my wife.  Thonging is the next best thing... barely.

Was anybody there to see the plane crash today? Steve, Candy?

Apparently a small plane couldn't make it to the airport and tried to land on the beach but unfortunately a man walking the beach with his daughter was killed. The daughter is in critical condition. All on board the plane were OK. Fully story here:

That pilot is an ass. He killed someone else because he was too chicken to risk his own life by putting the plane in the water.
Orlcpl-  This beach is at the end of the airport. Nothing closer. But the pilot should have ditched in the water.

Latest story is the pilot saying he didn't see the walkers.

Its possible as seeing down straight ahead is a problem.

Water landings, suggested by bigbizz, are very difficult.  More so with a fixed landing gear.

Still, I'm reminded of the 737 pilot who had two uncommanded rudder hardovers during a night approach to Richmond VA.  He asked his co pilot to find a dark spot where, if there was a third rudder hard over, they could perhaps crash the plane, if they had enough control if there was a third rudder hard over.  A lot of people on that plane, over 100.  Yet that was his decision, to try to avoid death and injury on the ground.

Now we have this guy, with himself and one passenger, trying to land on a beach.  And a few months ago, the small plane with three people on it who tried to land on McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater.

Did either of them think there weren't likely to be people in either place?  That trying to put the best chance of survival on three people in the McMullen Booth plane and two in the Casperson plane while putting more at risk on the ground was the right thing to do?

I can sit on my porch and watch the commercial jets make the turn for their approach to TPA.  And also the private planes doing the same for the approach to Albert Whitted.  I think I'd rather be under the commercial jets.

Re:Caspersen Beach - Venice, FL

Date Posted:07/30/2014 10:36:57Copy HTML

Actually, water landings are on average 90% survivable for small aircraft even with fixed landing gear:

http://www.equipped.com/ditchingmyths.htm
http://www.avweb.com/news/safety/183010-1.html?redirected=1

In this light, the pilot really screwed up IMO and will be paying dearly out of his wallet for that decision (and will be living with this the rest of his life). Will be interesting to see how the rest of the investigation turns out, and if the local DA attempts to file criminal charges. Also, if there were any maintenance anomalies with the plane the owner could be found partially liable too.

Re:Caspersen Beach - Venice, FL

We were not out but have spoken to 2 regulars who witnessed the crash. From their accounts the plane had appeared high enough to land up where the old beach road still can be seen. I don't know why the pilot would not choose that over the sloped soft sand of the beach. It seems that a pilot could have landed a small plane up there without any damage at all, such a shame. The published comments by the pilot were uncaring and not very remorseful:( A very sad situation all the way around.

The FAA needs to ban him from ever piloting again. He committed one of the worst offenses possible by not putting it in the water. I believe the Sheriff could come up with some criminal charges as well. Not much different here than vehicular manslaughter. He will have a hard time convincing a jury he had no other option.

Gorgeous day out yesterday (Thursday)! Wind was out of the WNW at a steady 10-12 mph which made it so nice not having to worry about the bugs. The Gulf was a bit choppy and water temp is right around 90 degrees. We arrived around 1:30 and there were very few people out, a couple to the south and south of them a few of the regular guys, just to the north a single woman and north of her a single guy. It turned out that it was the womans first time on the beach, she had found it through an internet search:) We tried to make her feel comfortable and we both enjoyed meeting her a lot. A wonderful day out!!

Great day at Caspersen today. Got there later than usual about 2pm so set up a little further south, about half way between the family section and the usual thong area. There were very few people at the beach with the combination of high heat and back to school for the kids. With hardly anyone around I tanned au-naturale and had no issues. Interestingly, on the walk back there was a woman sunbathing topless right in the middle of the family section. Seems to be more foreign tourists around this time of the year than earlier in the summer.

Best part though, I was swimming in the water and saw what looked like a big patch of seaweed drifting right at me, but then I thought "that doesn't make sense, the current is going the other way". Then when it was about 3 feet away from me it became clear ... there were two manatees in the water swimming slowly right by me! I could have reached down and pet them (but I didn't cause it's against the law), so I left them alone and enjoyed their company for a brief moment.

WOW!!! What a gorgeous day yesterday! The wind was 10+ mph ENE and the Gulf was flat as glass, visibility was 3-4', some light clouds out and best of all, the water temp was down to 88 degrees. With the east wind we set up right at the waters edge. Almost no one was out, 2 single guys set up to the north of us, only one set up to the south and we only saw 3 textile walkers all of whom are regulars. Snorkled a lot and found a couple of teeth, we spent most of the day in the water, it was perfect. It has been way too hot lately and with the Gulf temp having been over 90 we just haven't wanted to go out, now that has changed and we should be getting out more frequently.

We went out yesterday Wed. and it was a very nice day out! SSE breeze about 10mph,  Gulf was calm and cooled off, not great visibility and a bit of the lettuce type seaweed out. We arrived before noon and left just after 3:00, three couples were set up to the north of us and still out when we left, a few single guys out. The Ferry was closed and not a lot of textile traffic at all. A very relaxing day out.

  Hi all-
Elle and I flew into Venice airport the other day and got a shuttle to Sharky's for lunch.  The beach looks fantastic and we want to go back.  How far south from the pier would we need to go to strip to thongs?  If it's south of the southernmost parking, it would be a good mile and a half.  Just wondering if we could thong it on the way or would we have to go past the end of Harbor Road?  Plus, is it walkable beach all the way down?  Thanks for any info you could give us.

Re:Caspersen Beach - Venice, FL

Go south on Harbour Road well past Sharkey's until the road ends. There are a couple different parking spots at the end, one is paved the other is dirt. Either one is fine.

Then enter the beach via the access ramps. Legally you can thong anywhere on Caspersen, and I've even worn a g-string within 50 yards of last entry ramp on the left. However, most thongers will continue walking farther south on the beach anywhere from 1/4 mile to 1.5 miles where it is more quiet & isolated. All depends on your comfort level.

Re:Caspersen Beach - Venice, FL

Keep in mind that beach section near the pier at Sharkey's is technically Venice Beach where thongs are not legal. I guess there are two options if you start out at Sharkey's.

One is to go to Caspersen Beach as mentioned in my previous post. To get to Caspersen you would need to walk/drive farther south down Harbour Road. You can't walk along the beach from the Sharkey's Pier to Caspersen because of the section of rocks dividing the two beaches.

The other option is to walk south from Sharkey's along the beach south until you reach the section just before the rocks. That area there is technically county property (not Venice City property) so thongs would be legal. However it's not a common area to wear a thong but there usually is enough open space there away from the crowds so it's possible. Note:  beyond the rocks is the northern part of Caspersen.

Thanks lindros!  That's the info we were looking for.  It looked like, from Google Earth, that there are some rocky sections along the shore but I figured it best to check in with the locals.  We will be walking so it looks like a 2 mile trek.  It looks like we could walk the beach from Sharky's, jump over to Harbor Dr when we get to the rocks, then back to the beach after the parking area?   I'll be thonging wherever they're legal...with respect of course to the type of beach-goers encountered...not around kids, rednecks, etc.  We'll stop and say hi to most thongers.  Hope to meet you there some time.

You're quite welcome. Yes, you can walk the beach south of Sharky's pier & when you get near the rocks go up one of the paths to pick up Harbour Road to continue the rest of the way to Caspersen. I'm sending you a PM with further info.

Went yesterday to the thonging area. Weather perfect, hot sunny light breeze. Water cool and calm as a swimming pool. Only one other person, a man, was on the beach. Otherwise empty. He was wearing a "conservative" thong. I was trying out my new one sided thong. No problems in or out of water. One man came walking north on the beach, obviously leaving. To my surprise, he was wearing a baggy. Leaving, walking north Saw a group of 3 young men much further north, completely nude. No patrols. Once the shark tooth and shell hunters left about 4:00 PM the entire beach was practically deserted. Great day.

Hello Everyone,
It has been so long since we have posted, life has gotten in the way of our beach time. We went out Sunday for the first time in months and it was an absolutely gorgeous day. Sunny and hot, mid to upper 80s on the beach, water temp was a chilly 65, Gulf was flat calm and crystal clear, just a very light breeze out of the SSW. Sand!! lots of it, we were worried before arriving as the last few times out we had seen a lot of loss of sand. We are happy to report that in some places the beach has grown by more than 20-30 yards, woohoo!! We arrived late, about 2:30 and we were very surprised there were not more people out. We expected there still to be some of the regulars to the north and were sure the regulars to the south would be out, but neither really. We saw a few single guys out that we know and met a new couple that set up way way south, she was walking the beach and stopped to chat. We were both amazed at how few sharks teeth there were, with all the natural beach renourishment you would think there would be tons, but almost none at all. Candy found only 3 little ones and the woman we met had walked several miles of beach and only 1 nice tooth. As we were sitting and having lunch we noticed 2 textiles coming south with what looked like guitars, it turned out to be 2 young guys from NH down on vacay and playing their way up and down the beach:) All in all a fabulous day! Cant wait to get out there again.

I got to spend a couple hours out here today, perfect weather.  So many people right by the ramp, but no thongers set up down the beach when i arrived.  I was pretty far down and set up, saw a couple single guys and some couple of guys walk past me in board shorts but not sure what they had on underneath.  Water still chilly but can't beat the weather, no ladies out today or the last time I went either. I think the beach is great scenery but a few ladies wont hurt either!

We went out yesterday, Sunday, and arrived early about 11:30. It was a gorgeous day out with just a little too much breeze out of the NW, water was calm and just under 65 degrees, air temp was upper 70s. We were very surprised by the lack of umbrellas out up by where the couples section is and to the south of us as well. Only two other couples out and 6-8 single males and hoards and hoards of textile walkers, its that time of year. There has been a lot of sand movement and beach loss:( the dunes have held up well enough but the beach that had been added is all gone. Back to square one. The beach goes through many cycles, weather and social included. We had a great day out, the ride back home was very chilly though and the worst part of all.. we didn't find a single sharks tooth, next time jackpot Megaladon!! lol we wish.

We were out on Sunday and arrived about 1:00pm. Gorgeous day out warm and sunny, we were very surprised to see so few umbrellas out, the amount of textile walkers we expected. The first really nice day we have had in a while. The beach has taken a real beating, high tide on sunday was 2:24 pm and when we arrived we were shocked at how much beach has been lost:( High tide comes all the way up to the dunes and the bottom of our cooler was getting wet regularly even back up all the way. Dang!!! Not much to do but hope and pray, the beach re-nourishment further north is unlikely to improve things if history has been a clue. We did see some regulars out and also someone from another beach on this board. Very few sharks teeth, even with all of that erosion. The air temp was low 80s and the Gulf water is just under 64, a stiff 10-12 knot breeze from the southwest was nice. We are looking forward to a weekday out and have our fingers crossed.

Wow what a difference a day makes, we went out Saturday.  The water was way off the dunes and I got about 25 shark teeth in about an hour, without combing the waters. I just kept my eyes down while walking along the shore. However same as Sunday i thought it would be crowded but only one other person in the thonging area, besides some randoms in the trails.  Water was still too cold, but the sun was out and very nice.

We went out yesterday (Wed) for a few hours, the sun came out to greet us just as we arrived at 1:00 and played peek-a-boo all afternoon. Almost no walkers and no one else set up, we had the "beach" to ourselves but had to set up in one of the "honey holes" in the dunes, high tide was not until 4:45 and there was no dry sand at all when we arrived :-( Last night's rain did not help things I am sure, but at least the tide was out by then. We did find some teeth and tons of coral, but the beach? Is almost not there until you get up north by the big trail exit, keeping our fingers crossed that the Venice beach renourishment project will help Caspersen, it desperately needs help.

We were out yesterday (Tuesday) and had a wonderful day out. We arrived about 1:30 and high tide was supposed to be at 2:00, the wind out of the SW kept the tide coming in until 3:00 or so and there was not a lot of dry sand around when the tide peaked:( The gulf was a little rough at around 2'+ quite a bit of boat traffic out for the conditions. The beach traffic was odd all day, lots of walkers and lots of people on the trails. What looked like an off-duty LEO but he would not stop walking long enough for me to ask him directly when he was on his way out. We stayed till almost 6:00 and by about 3:30-4:00 the beach was just regulars, 4 to the south of us and close to a dozen to the north. A beautiful day out!

Looking at moving to Cape Coral for the boating life. Does anyone have experience boating around Casperson beach or other islands and finding good beaches? What about other boaters wearing thongs/ g strings while out fishing? Thanks
