Celebrities are wearing thong bikinis all over the place this year and the media is definitely noticing the trend.  Take a look:

I would have to agree thongbikinigirl: you knock the socks off those silly celebrity thong wannabes (many of them are barely in thongs)! You have better taste in thong selection as well :)
I think it's refreshing that thongs are coming back in popularity at the beach, even if I might not particularly like a lot of the celebrities that are heralding them.
  Happy thonging anyway!

Am I the only one who noticed the 'reporter's' comment on the Gisele Bündchen photo. Quote, "We find it a teensy bit weird that she's rocking a thong in front of her kiddos, but we'd have found it even weirder if her son was wearing one, too. That's the kind of family bonding future therapy sessions are made of."

The implication is that thongs are okay in an Aduts Only situation, but not as a part of normal family life. One step forward, two steps backwards?

I mean, some things are inappropriate for kids that are appropriate for adults.  Most people wouldn't want a little girl wearing something provocative, but when she's an adult, it's totally her decision to do so.  As much as I love wearing thongs, I wouldn't have my kids wear them too.  I wouldn't hesitate to wear them around kids though.

Vapid comments about what a celebrity wears are just the meaningless mumblings of the mindless mopes who watch shows like TMZ.

Today's homophobic Beavis and Butthead.

Mostly people who have reached the age of thirty without acquiring a personality or life of their own,
so they live vicariously by expounding on the true meaning of paparazzi snapshots,
interpreted through the lens of their venti tea-leaf less chi frapachino.

As to kids. There has been lots of debate. Some think thongs are sexual and should only be seen by adults.

Some see thongs as just another swimsuit and that hiding their bums is as silly as hiding their ankles  or belly buttons.
If the latter is true then there is no good reason kids cant wear what ever they like too.

On my beach the law says any girl 8 or under can go topless. Many people think it should be 18 or older.
Just a little to the south on Miami Beach women of any age can go topless, women, kids and teens.

Once you get over the unnecessary sexulization of thongs and swimwear in general, I don't see a need for age limits.
Let people wear what they want and quit worrying about the harm of other people seeing a bum.

You know kids, once upon a time, a "proper" women in America did not let people see her ankles,
that was before the roaring twenties and when the fashionable flapper girls set the trends by showing a whole lot more.

Next up an old movie called Blue Lagoon, made long before you kids were even born.

A few points, celebs and well known fashionistas are often seen as the cutting edge of fashion trends and to borrow an old saying "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday", what is seen on celebs will fly off the shelves pretty soon afterwards.

Even if Kim K, Princess Kath, Jada Pinkett-Smith or Kylie Minogue all started wearing thongs/G-Strings, it is unlikely that these will bring them back into the mainstream.

The biggest constraint is that social media and the access to peoples opinions - through the internet means that trends and fads have a much shorter timeframe these days. Back before all of this, one could wear something totally out of fashion a good 12-18 months after the fad had died and people would not say anything, you could probably still buy the clothes still in the shops. The fast fashion business model means that if it does not sell, production will cease.

The best thing is to not care about who is wearing what and be comfortable in whatever you wear, knowing that you are probably going to cop an ear full, from time to time.

Well they haven't gone totally mainstream, but pretty close to it.  With victoria's secret attempting to follow the trend with their semi-thong bottoms called the "itsy bikini bottom", there have been a lot of women at many different areas of the U.S. that have embraced the idea of showing off a mostly bare ass in public and now think of it as "cute" instead of slutty.  At last year's Miami fashion week, most designer bikini companies had models wearing thongs to promote a much skimpier line of swimwear they were trying to push.  No, it's not totally mainstream, but it's actually getting there this year, especially with women 18-35.

Doubt you can change the mind of an adult female when their mindset of showing off skin is classless.
Had conversation with a couple guys at work. They commented on a women that they find who attires horribly. They asked me to help her to organize what she wears, telling me i must be the best dressed person they know. While laughed at their suggestion knowing fully the women in question hates my wardrobe and wants nothing to do with me, calling me a freak. While her peers find her fashion touch envious and applaud everything she wears. Often she wears two outfits at work changing which throws some people off. While i hear many negative commentary about how bad she attires herself, probably the same people doing it to me also,  i never judge unlike her feelings onto me. Speaking to her saying, trust me you don't want to hear what they are saying about you. While she assumes wrongly they are talking sexually perverted ways about her. Talk about a pot calling the kettle black.

So while many find peoples wardrobe not to their liking, hope some don't assume the worse about them. Wear what you like and don't judge them personaly for what they wear, as hard it may not explode laughing at them. Fashion is just an experiment or release of what we feel or try to achieve. Sometimes it's just a way to show off our personality for others to accept. While true many don't want to free themselves from civil societies constraints. So when in doubt wear black and coverup as much as possible, then none will dare to point fingers. In my case someone always notices or makes remarks whatever i wear. So what difference does it make what i wear if they will sniker commenting what i wore last week or times before. While many feel awkwardness towards me i just need to live with it while others keep their distance talking behind my back.

Young women actually enjoy showing off skin.  It's the reason we like going to the beach, and it's the reason we like dressing up in scandalous outfits on Halloween.  The thing is, we just don't want to be thought of as being slutty or inappropriate.  Halloween, for example, gives us an excuse to show off knowing that pretty much everyone else is doing it so we can't be judged negatively.  Thong bikinis are no different.  Lots of women are happy to see famous women wearing them and to see them being sold by mainstream bikini makers because it means we can show off, look sexy, and not feel as judged depending on the setting.  But I personally know a bunch of other girls that are happy that bikinis that minimal coverage are becoming mainstream because it gives them an excuse to wear them.  We really don't like unflattering, enormous tan lines.

 Bren, when you say,

"The best thing is to not care about who is wearing what and be comfortable in whatever you wear, knowing that you are probably going to cop an ear full, from time to time."

You have hit the nail so 100% squarely on the head.
Conformity is a terrible thing in my mind, I think most people follow a trend or fashion so they don't feel left out and are not talked about in a negative way by others. Let them talk is what I say !  I've got thick skin and if they don't understand my preferences in swim, tanning or any other attire for that matter, chances are I don't want them in my life anyway. I guess I've been lucky coz I've never copped an earful, being 6'3" and 195lbs helps ! LOL  Be a free sprit and be true to yourself, life is so much richer that way and the chances are you will meet some beautiful people that ARE on the same level.

bbyrne makes a good point about the social media impact on fashion.  Not only does it speed things up and limit choices available to consumers on the shelves, but it also imposes tight conformity by exposing everyone who acts outside the accepted norms (based upon majority opinion) to severe and almost instant critical feedback.  It almost acts like a form of statisical process control, meaning the deviations to extremes in either direction are not accepted.

The people who criticize you for wearing a thong are either women in regular bikinis or men in board shorts, not people who insist upon shoulder-to-ankle coverage.  For males at the beach or pool, the norm is bored shorts from birth to death.  For females, it changes with age, and gets ill-defined for those who are plus-size, over 40, or are parents.  If a woman wears a swimsuit that covers shoulder-to-knee, then she might criticized for appearing "too frumpy", "too matronly", etc.

Before social media, the only feedback one average citizen recieved from another was verbal and the photos were film that mostly stayed in private collections.  What happened in Cancun on spring break stayed in Cancun.  With social media, friends can betray each other with a critical "tweet" and a photo of things that took place months in the past.  Or maybe the photo wasn't intended as a betrayal, but ends up getting so much negative feedback from 3rd parties that the subject of the photo feels betrayed.

I believe the overall net effect of social media upon fashion is that it causes a large minority of individuals to wear things they don't want to wear.  If everyone wore what they truly wanted at the beach, I think about 80% would be doing exactly as they are now, but you would see significant minority of guys going back to speedos or thongs, but also some small minority women who would opt for more coverage, mainly those who now claim to look upon swimsuit season with dread.  Yet at the end of the day, you can't please everyone, so why bother trying.

Think younger females are called impressionable which is always a cop out for their true desires or individual style and taste.
Sure a celebrity can make things right to some point. Take Rihanna for example, she wore a thong bikini in Hawaii and TMZ commented that she will learn to use better judgement for her attire on the beach, being so naive. For one thing you get a celebrity begging and asking to be complimented, by the media and public, but all she gets is grief for wearing a thong bikini in the ocean.
While teenagers use the excuse Rihanna wore a thong at the beach why can't i at our family vacation? This give legitimacy to the thong being an option for swimwear but usually parents say NO, NO fat chance, my female daughter will be wearing a thong at a public beach. Just like teenage females want to wear black leggings alone without some sort of coverage along their hips parents oppose those choices or trends girls want to wear. In fact teenagers want to explore and find their fashion sense while fighting with parents for what they deem appropriate or not.

Just as i laid out by my clearwater condo pool one day. Had a tourist family nearby, one of the boys maybe 10 years old asked naively why can't he wear swimsuit like that man (me, thinking it was cool, comfortable). While i had on a 1 inch side bikini brief maybe 3/4 back coverage. The mother took her son under the gazebo further away, from the pool where i was laying out. She explained whispering quietly, i could still hear talking to her son. Boy's don't wear tiny swimsuits like him they are for girls and ladies to wear. While i rolled my eyes shaking my head knowing her odd stare, when noticing me walking on the pool deck earlier. Felt sorry for the boy seeing how he was wearing uncomfortable  pants, what i like to call it, going down below his knees, at times coming close to his ankles, guess they call them dork shorts. The shorts may have weighed more then him when wet being so baggy and long.

So it takes an exhausted parents from giving in or up to their female teens wearing skimpier swimwear calling it okay and cute. Once the ball is rolling many females will take it as normal swimwear and trend is set. Last thing women want is being ridiculed by peers that thonging is sluty but if they see celebrity in a few they answer back but she wears one. Then everything is okay and the females fashion sense becomes acceptable and not someone they can tease or call sluty.

Only problem i see if women's styles get smaller and skimpier and the trend increases in the rear coverage then males wearing one will be persecuted or labeled for wearing womens swimwear that will be more prevalent worn. These days or past summers seeing a female in a thong was rare or non existent. You probably get better chances seeing a male wear a thong to the beach then a female. So whenever i heard the words about me wearing women's swimwear it basically couldn't be true. Many stores didn't sell thongs for women and almost any women would say it is a fact and disagree that a man is wearing a ladies gendered thong. What i'm saying is more women wear thongs at the beach or availability to buy at department stores the chances of males wearing one can be confused as wearing a female thong. We all know how stupid people are to this point women stared upon a male in a thong and must of crossed their mind that is a nice looking thong where could i buy that with a matching top. Then it sinks in that the thong a male is wearing is 100% male and they are envious wishing they could buy similar style color.

I don't know if that is the best topic to post this but here it goes:I dreamed that several people of both sex wore thongs on the beach in favor of a charity campaign, those who bought and wore a thong would be helping and spreading some kind of campaign for health research or something, would not it be great if there was something like that?

It's going to take a bold move by one of the major retailers, like VS, to start selling a few full on thong back bikinis in a regular shopping mall near you to bring (at least the ladies version) into the mainstream.

I think Victoria Secret are a little stupid to call a whole range of bikini bottoms "Itsy".

Having said that, the one that was most popular at spring break was the "ColorBlock" Itsy bottom.

https://www.victoriassecret.com/swimwear/itsy/the-colorblock-itsy-beach-sexy?ProductID=222003&CatalogueType=OLS

Without doubt the most popular color combo was the one shown on the left,
Bright neon yellow with the blue.
Funny that this popular color is the only color NOT currently offered on their website.

Women, grab one of these bottoms and tops in the neon yellow and blue from your local store, before they run out.

The VS ColorBlock seems to be patterned after suits by Triangl.
We think the VictoriaSecret Isty ColorBlock bottom is way cuter than any of the Triangl bottoms, and less expensive.

However the tops are quite a bit different: VS colorblock tops are fun, but a more traditional shapes, whereas some of the Triangl color block range are more of a push-up or lift-up tops. There fabric is a bit thicker.

From first post, they all had good looking bodies and asses, but these writers need to learn what thongs are, what rios are, and so on. Not all were thongs. And what was wrong with the one in a "thong", it wasnt, with her son? There was nothing sexual or explicit. She wasnt shoving her sons face in her ass. There was nothing wrong.

Victoria's Secret took one baby step in the right direction at least, but it's pretty sad that they market this so boldly and being cutting edge sexy.  My wife tried 1 on and was not impressed.  Pretty conservative by her standards, Malibu Strings Rio backs were much smaller in the back.

Kendall Jenner they say is increasing the popularity of one piece thongs with narrow fronts.  It's been called a "frong" by some.  We around here have seen some real reversible thong/g strings that go well with the female anatomy on some beaches.  The article warns that your thong bikini tanline will be visible in these high cut suits and we've seen that- and liked it!

As a general rule I dislike paparazzi pictures. Even worse is the glee of the babbling idiots who write nothing but derogatory pieces about people more famous than them, about a wardrobe malfunction, flash of knickers, or critique of their weight.
This sort of daily tabloid writers have nothing good to say about most people, or what they wear.
The relentless sniping and paparazzi ogling means that people who might influence culture, and specifically beach and swimsuit culture, have to do the sunning out of sight.

It's the old rule, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it.

Seems like the fashion trends for women's dresses mean underwear is a no way situation.  Some fashion shows are showing bare skin.  Some dresses expose the waistline meaning no waist line underwear.  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3394248/Is-fashion-week-s-daring-trend-Model-takes-catwalk-exposing-bare-breasts-totally-naked-coat-London.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3393532/Charli-XCX-leaves-little-imagination-goes-underwear-free-Golden-Globes-afterparty.htmlSince underwear trends gravitate later to beachwear maybe we're moving into nudity?  Seems "nudists" in the US are all geriatric now but check this article from down under:            “The popularity of nudism is on the increase in Sydney.
