a21, I like your attitude about thonging, namely "just do it".  And thongjockey is right, you do have to be extra careful about illness.  The first time I went there 10 years ago I did get sick, but since them I have been super-super careful and have not had any problems.

Has anyone been to Zoetry resort? I'm heading there next spring with my fiance.  Curious how the thonging situation is there.  I don't think it will sway us one way or another on what we wear, but still curious.

My wife and I just got back from 5 days in Punta Cana.  We stayed at the Ocean Blue Beach and Golf resort.  Nothing fancy for an all inclusive, but nice staff there as well as some cool guests from the UK we befriended as well.  Although we had a bit of unseasonable rain on two of the five days we were there, the beach in Punta Cana WELCOMES thong wearers!  Although my wife wore nothing more skimpy than a VS cheeky bikini bottom (she did not feel comfortable enough wearing her Skinz thong bikinis b/c she says she didn't fee fit enough???), I did wear my thongs everyday at the beach (CM Gray Gripper, Kiniki pink-striped, & Kiniki liquid gold).  Walked a couple miles north and south on the beach from our resort - received a couple compliments from women.  A bunch of women wearing thongs - the wife of the couple from the UK we hung out with went topless with her bikini bottom every day - a bunch of women were topless.  My wife even worked up the courage and went topless the last day we were there (you go girl!).  Regarding guys in thongs, I saw two other guys wearing thongs over the five days we were there.  A bunch of speedos on the beach, but including myself only 3 guys tanning their buns.  Although the DR is a bit snoozy as far as activity goes, the beaches are great for tanning.

I'm headed to Punta Cana on 1/9/11 for 10 days. It sounds like a bit of a mixed bag so I'm not going there with any preconceived notions about what I'll find. I'll report back to the board on the topless / thong scene. I typically go to Cancun, but like many others I thought I'd explore Punta Cana. The DR is being heavily marketed to Americans at the moment.

Updating after being in Punta Cana for 6 days, topless is illegal on all beaches in the Dominican Republic according to the hotel information packet. That said, the Barcelo resort is full of French and Russian tourists. I lost count at 8 different women who were topless sunbathing through the week all from various nationalities. Some of them were walking the beach and swimming uncovered. Thongs and the more popular Rio backs are also prevalent on women more so on the French tourists. The majority of men are in Euro versions of narrow sided speedos or less frequently square cuts. This has not, however, meant a large number of men in thongs. Have only seen 2 men in thongs (one of those walking down the beach)and they were both with topless women (board members?) Interestingly, the younger Frenchmen, twenty somethings, were the ones most likely to wear board shorts, some were also wearing American university t-shirts. I was speculating they might have been exchange students at some point. I can't say that I have noticed any reactions positive or negative to either the topless women or the thong wearers. I have found the natives to be extremely friendly overall. A large number working at the hotel speak some English. The Russian and French tourists include a good number of chain smokers and the Americans who are here tend to be too heavy.

Hello, we are going at the begining of march 2011 at las terrenas, then at Cabarete in Dominican Republic.
We'd like to meet women or couples to share thong at the beach.
Also if there are nice men who like to look at women in thong...

 My review as promised.
I stayed the the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana with my girlfriend in Jan of this year. As mentioned before, I was determined to get the thongs out no matter what happened.
On the day we arrived, we dropped our cases and went for a quick walk along the beach, (fully clothed). The very first person we saw was a guy wearing a thong rubbing lotion into his topless, thong wearing wife! a few steps along the beach we saw a number of women in the sea or walking along with thong bikini's on.
We went and got changed, I donned my JS Capri, (easing myself into it), the missus got on her Halcyon Blue thong bikini. We sunned on the beach on the loungers all day long, walking a fair distance to the sea and ordering drinks from the waiting staff. No comments were made and not much attention either.
The following day, I wore my JS Thong, she wore her Divissima micro and we hit the beach again. We both felt completely comfortable in our thongs. She was topless most of the time apart from when swimming We people-watched and saw many women in thongs and the occasional guy including a similar young couple in the hotel next door, where we noticed the guy getting more daring each day until they were both in thongs :)
We took the long walk down to the water, people we're checking her out and I got plenty of looks especially from a group of Canadian girls in their 20's in the water. And they were admiring looks not the 'what is that guy doing?' looks, which I thought was nice.
We hit the pool at the Majestic in our thongs most days, trying to stay to the quiet side. We had no comments or adverse looks. We swam up to the pool bar before lunch, sat on the stools under the water and sipped cocktails happily in our skimpy thongs.
I never thought I'd say it but we spent 2 weeks in a hotel in the Caribbean wearing nothing but thongs all day. I did not wear the Capri again or any shorts for the entire time, except for obviously evenings, meals and walking around the resort!
The missus got slightly more daring as the days passed and ended up on the beach in her Gemali 'St Lucia' micro bikini, this was hot and she got lots of positive attention. I have a couple of the mens Gemali's but being so small, I stuck to the balcony with these ;)
All in all, we were delighted with the people and atmosphere, we were not surrounded by other thongers but people didn't seem to mind. We got some killer tans and we'd return with just our thongs, (no back up's) in a heartbeat.
I hope this covers the vibe of the place for you.

Hi Superpop,I have been to Punta Cana on seven one week trips the last five years and the Riu complex was one of them.I stayed at the Riu Taino. As far as the beach in front of the Riu Palace goes i would not call it one of the best on the complex because it has an open stretch of sand in the middle,I think its because they are trying to showcase the Palace. If you stay at the Palace you can have access to any of the services at any one of the other Rius, for example the beach bars.Be free to wear your thong on any stretch of Punta Cana.I have just retuned from a stay at the Bavaro Princess and it was great.I tanned on the beach, walked to the bars and swam in the Ocean every day.I also walked the beach in both directions for hours, stopping here and there to pose for pictures with people, not to mention the countless other discreet pictures other people were taking. All this while wearing a red and black g-string.Reactions to this were for the most part positive, you just have to learn to shut out the negative comments, ignore it and have a good time.the one who laughs last is you because you will have a better tan line than the rest of them.I could have some postings soon on you tube or flikr,so watch for that.Enjoy your stay.

Re:Dominican Republic - Resorts

Mexico:  I wore no more than a thong at Blue Bay Getaway CanCun all week.  I had one lady say, "Pushing the limit aren't you?"  I replied, "I can't be naked"...or something to that affect.  I was the only male in a thong, yet, all the pool games were an attempt to get the women naked.  Some of the games were childish and crude.  The resort was a couple only top-free resort.  What I didn't like, was that I couldn't wear a man's sarong (long to the ankle) with a golf shirt into the dining room, nor a kilt...only long pants or Bermuda shorts. :(  ...while women could wear almost anything.

At night, they had games in their "theatre" and had one game where they had everyone take off their shirts and put them into a central pile.  Next, it was to take off your shorts/pants and put them into the pile....they didn't anticipate that there were people in the crowd, not wearing underwear. lol  So, I and some others sat naked waiting for the next event.  I had a few ladies around me, who looked and smiled at me. :D  I'm slightly above average. :D

The staff had a fit when I was playing naked volleyball, and I got out of the pool to retrieve the volleyball. ;)  We'd draped our bottoms into the net.  When the game was over, I couldn't find my thong.  I had to walk around the pool area naked trying to locate it.  I found it in the skimmer.

Being Canadian, I'm not used to a double standard.  What's legal for men, is legal for women, and vice versa.  If I can legally be top free in a particular location, they can't charge a woman for being top free.

While at Couples Resort, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, they told us that you could be naked on Tower Isle, top free at the end of the jetty, but full swimwear was required around the pool.  I went to the pool in a bikini and saw a lady in a thong topfree.  I went back to my room, changed into a thong and wore nothing more for the full week around the resort, 'cept for Tower Isle where I was naked.  I participated in all games that week wearing no more than a thong and came home with 8 bottles of liquor that my wife and I had won plus two other bottles.  I declared that I'd purchased only one bottle of liquor each...which was true.

Every resort I have ever been to in Punta Cana has always been totally cool with my thong.  The atmosphere does vary a lot from place to place.  One year there were many others in thongs and many women topless.  Another year I don't think I saw a single topless woman or even a woman in a thong or a man in a bikini the entire week.  But no one bothered me in my thong, even poolside, and walking to the restroom or the beach bar.  This past year everybody was so cool that by midweek I had abandoned my coverup entirely and walked from my room to the beach and/or pool and around the resort and up and down the beach in nothing more than my thong.  No problems.  I also checked out all the (overpriced) beach shops; this is always great fun as you certainly do stand out, but no one ever complains.  Several times the female clerks disappeared into the back and returned shortly with several of their friends all of whom made no attempt to conceal that they were checking me out.  One shop opened onto a main street that had a sort-of mall across the street and down a bit.  I had probably had a drink or 2 too many that day, but I decided to check all this out.  So here I was in nothing more than a tiny thong, walking the streets of the "town" and into the off-beach mall and through many of the shops, and no one said anything about my attire.  Lots of smiles and some cameras to be sure, but that's ok.  Other observations:

(1)  It may be illegal for women to be topless on the beach, but I have never seen this enforced anywhere.  All the resorts have security guards at the edge of their "beach space", and I have seen many topless women walk right by them with no problems.  (2)  Many resorts will say topless is not allowed at the pools in their "welcome" packets, but I have never seen this enforced.  I am sure women can do anything they want, beach or poolside (as long as they are not totally nude) with no problems.  (3)  Women can usually get away with any sort of dress (or lack thereof) anywhere in the resort, including the restaurants and evening shows.  The sky is the limit on how short skirts or dresses can be, bras are always optional, and totally see-thru or necklines that plunge to the waist also seem ok.  It is pretty unusual to see a woman walking the resort off the beach topless, but I have seen it, and nobody ever seems to object.  (4)  So the bottom line is do what you want; there is probably no need to ask ahead of time.  Tourism is everything down there and the management has far more important things to worry about than what guests do or do not wear.  Somehow, the idea of the customer always being right hasn't been lost like it has in so much of the US.

We have stayed at the Bahia principe property and the grand palladium property many times. These resorts as well as many in Punta Cana seem to cater to a European Clientele. I had no problem wearing my usual 1" bikini and my wife wore a thong and was topless the whole time. The vibe in Punta Cana is free and people in general do not seem to care what you wear.

Hi all,       I'm sorry for the delay in posting about our recent trip to P.C. I am just usually exhuasted by the time I get home and am right back to work and very busy(blah, blah, blah).
So this was our third trip to the Occidental in four years. We really love this place and the layout of the resort in particular. I wore my JS capri in black and wine colors, Skins royal blue rio, and my JS knockoff made at "WET" Las Vegas.NO negative comments (nor any positive ones for that matter) but I felt very comfortable just chillaxin, playing volleyball, walking the beach, or going on one of many excurtions(parasail, snorkel) in just my swimsuit of choice. My wife reiterated how she felt that my swimsuits were a NON issue in this place.      There was one guy staying in our resort;part of two, twenty something couples who wore a tie side g string. He was not as "brazen" as I was with regard to straying away from his lounger in only minimal wear. He usually covered up with square cuts if he wanted to go anywhere. My wife felt that his G was too revealing and inapppropriate especially since there many kids around.(?)        There were several women in rios ang thongs and G's as well as topless. Can't wait to go back.

Any one with recent knowledge of a resort that men wearing G-strings or thongs is fairly common?  I always wear a mesh suit, even
around the pool area and would love not to be the only guy in a string or thong.

Re:Dominican Republic - Resorts

My Punta Cana stay at the Gran Bahia Principe included beach time every day. First my very unofficial count of topless women was 2 over 8 days only one of whom was staying at my resort. Signs were posted at the pools prohibiting topless sunbathing but nothing on the beach. Thongs on women were uncommon but there were a few noticable ones on the beach. I lost count at 9 over 8 days. The resort seemed to be very full and have plenty of family groups. The majority of the tourists staying there were Canadian and I was surprised just how much they drank. Many were wasted well before sundown. On men, there were plenty of speedos, other brief swimwear (even Lacoste), square cuts but no thongs that I saw. I think the crowded beach may have played into it as there was virtually no personal space to be had. This resort had far too many people to accommodate for the amount of beachfront it has. Overall I'd say that this trip was disappointing in terms of minimalist beachwear. I'll be trying a different resort next year.

Ondaspot, we've stayed at the same resort. While I didn't thong there, my wife did, and there are a lot of thong women, along with some topless. It's pretty chill; I would suspect you will have a great time and nobody will care, although I doubt you'll see any other thong males.  Got back from P.C. recently and as usual had a great time. One of my college friends and his family joined us for a few days. We went on a short trip to Puerto Vallarta a few years ago with them so they were aware of my rio suits. This time I wore a skins standard rio, nu parr no tie nada w/ least coverage, and my fallback sunup/sundown rio. I tried to wear a skinz sunseeker rio one day but my wife diapproved saying it looked too much like a thong(oh well).
My friend is a board shorts wearing dude and he does give me some ribbing regarding my swimwear but not to the point of annoyance. If there is anywhere inthe world that I would NOT standout in my type of swimsuit it is in P.C.
There were many beautiful women TnT. Many guys in squarecuts as well as standard "speedo" type suits but I had the smallest suit of any guy that I could tell. We just barely escaped "Isaac".

I hope we can check out Punta Cana this winter.  It seems like it should have a little nicer weather than Mayan Riviera.  It sounds like the attitide towards topless should be pretty good from what you guys say.  My wife is fine with thong and topless on the beach but she doesn`t really enjoy ocean swimming, so we need to plan on splitting the day with the pool, so I would say that it`s essential that wherever we stay is okay with topless at the pool.  Hopefully she wouldn`t be the only one either.

I am hardly an expert on the Dominican, we've only been 3 times.   We've been to Punta Cana twice and Puerto Plata once, and this February we'll be heading back to Puerto Plata.    From my experience, you'll be the only guy in a thong on the beaches.    We enjoy walking and walking the beaches, of course in our thongs, and it's only women that show off in their thongs.    Not that that's a bad thing, lol, but it would be nice to see some guys showing off in their thongs too.    I wouldn't say that the Dominican is thong unfriendly, I think most of them could care less.   I've met up with only one that was downright rude.    Unfortunately we have to face the fact that we are in a minority, men wearing thongs are not commonplace and I don't think that will change soon.    So just wear whatever you want to, not many really care.    And to hell with those that take offence to it.

Bummer I thought since it is a Caribbean island it might change. It's true what you say #mrever_ready men in thongs are minority and we just have to face the fact that the'll be haters, people who don't care and people who might actually like what they see.

We had a great time in the DR.  Spent most of our time at the beach.  I wore Muscleskins 1" poser thong everyday and the Mrs wore a couple different MS bikini's.  She spent a lot of time topless as well.  We walked the beach, swam, went to and from the bar like that, it was great.  There were always a few other topless ladies at the beach, but never at the pool.  There were some ladies in thongs, more conservative ones though that the european ladies are wearing these days.  Most guys in briefs or squarecuts, not too many calve length shorts.  Did not see 1 other guy in a thong all week.  I'm disappointed we couldn't start a trend.  We felt with the pool being crowded that it was pushing it to wear the poser or the sheer mesh style bikini, so I would change into a more conservative speedo thong and she would stick to a regular MS thong suit, with top.  We got a few stares but no comments from guests or staff.

I am in my parents homeland of the Dominican Republic and decided to stay this weekend at the Sirenis Cocotal Beach Resort in Punta Cana in family. I know Dominicans aren't very accepting of men in thongs at the beach so I walked to nearby beaches next to this resort and thonged there during the mornings of my stay at this resort. These neighboring beaches are perfect for thonging you only see beach walkers and runners from the resort, other resorts or locals who live nearby. None said anything, I did catch and see most of there expression of surprise when they say me laying on my towel tanning in a thong or gstring. Most were simply surprised to see a man in a thong at the beach, not negative just surprised, I did get to see your typical giggling girls, I wasn't aware if they were making fun of me or liked what they saw anyway it was nice seeing them giggle. And the typical sneer look although this was just one middle aged Puerto Rican couple that did this to me while I was wearing a white mesh gstring and I said good morning to them as we crossed looks while walking and I think there reaction of disgust was because they were seeing to much without actually wanting.

One of the nicest moments was when I was thonging at this beach, there was a nearby merchant at the beach, a local man apparently in his late 50's early 60's, and I walked passed his table and went up to him and asked him about the area as I was wearing a tiny lime gstring. He acted very normal and neutral about it and responded with respect. On the next morning as I passed by his table once again I said good morning to him and he remembered me (of course who would forget about the guy in the thong) and asked him if he's seen men in similar garments as mine and he responded that although its very rare he has seen men wearing the same thing as me and I asked him if its ok for a man to wear garments likes this in these areas and he responded, very sincerely and said, that it is not a crime so I guess you can wear what you please. I smiled because a local accepted my beach attire, and it was an elderly local so double points for me.

As for the resort, I know that you are aloud to wear thongs at the resort beach if you like but not in the pool area. The pool area of this resort is very family friendly and even discourages topless women. I went to neighboring beaches to thong because I didn't want my family to see me thonging and the resort had a lot of guests. Most guests were Puerto Ricans, the men in dork shorts and the women in bikinis, although there was a big group of French as well and some of the men were speedos others were square cut trunks and everyone was cool about it but no man in thongs, I only saw two women in thongs, a Brazilian woman and a French woman but besides them no one in thongs. If I weren't with my family that weekend I might of thonged at the resorts beach with no problem since the Puerto Ricans and a few local Dominicans were most (if not all) in pool areas and the beach was filled with the French, a few British and the Brazilian woman with her daughter, and I know that with this last group of people I wouldn't have a problem with negative comments, or at least not at my face. The resort is quite nice, nice food, good rooms, a large variety of restaurants, pools galore and one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever been too.
This resort a semi-thonger friendly and technically I didn't thong at the hotel beach but I know men in thong at this beach wouldn't be a problem with the staff since I asked one of the security at the beach side and she told me its ok but most guest wouldn't like it, that it was up to me.
I uploaded some pictures of my thonging moments at this beach.

Dominican Republic is a very family friendly country with strong Catholic influences. They are particular more accepting of thongs in women and men if they are tourists from Europe, Brazil or any other country that is accepting of thongs. There is no law against anyone wearing a thong or g-string at any beach of the Dominican Republic but socially locals don't accept it to be ok, this is because Dominicans are also, modernly, very influenced by US media, fashion and trends so if in the US thongs are negatively commented on, so will in DR.
