I was able to get to East Beach Friday for a half day of enjoyment.  The weather was perfect!  There was a very nice ocean breeze which keep the temperature comfortable.   I got there about 8:15 am and the parking lot was 1/3 full.  When I left around 1 pm the parking lot was full and people were waiting.   I set up near the roped area and enjoyed some nude sunbathing before the crowds started to arrive.   I frequently changed suits for a very enjoyable day.  There saw one other guy in a thong/g-string and a couple of young ladies topless.  I hope to go again on Monday.

My wife and I are really loving East Beach this summer. We have lived in the area for about 20 years and weren't aware of it until reading this thread. As I mention above we bought the season pass to RI state beaches this year so it's now the beach of choice. I have been down alone about 4 times and my wife and I together about the same. We get there between 8:30 and 9 to get a spot and stay until about 1ish. We walk down to where the roped off area starts and then go about halfway along that. Far enough from the entrance that it will take a while for more people to show up.  I ALWAYS wear a thong - I have several from Tambre at beachndance.com (used to be Dore), all very low cut, narrow push out pouch, 1/2" side. Very brief. Wife is often topless while lying down. I walk down to the water, walk around, go swim without any reaction that I can sense. Although I have noticed some women, and a guy or two, setting up nearby and clearly watching. East Beach is awesome!

gw32If you purchased a seasonal pass for RI beaches before July 1st you might be eligible for a 50% refund.  The parking fee was reduced in the FY2017 state budget that started on  July 1st. Check out this website for more information:   http://www.ri.gov/press/view/27926

rickl454: Thanks! I'll look into that. I purchased an out of state pass (since we live in CT) which the nice young lady at the booth sold to me at the "senior rate" which is half price already. I'm only 54 so I was getting a good deal already ;-)

I made it to East Beach today, twice.  For an hour from 7 to 8, before departing for an art class.  Only one car in the lot; a long walk in the buff and some skinny dipping was possible.

Returned after class about 12:30, got a parking spot as someone was leaving.  Headed onto the beach in my camo mesh bikini over my camo mesh sock jock and walked about 15 minutes east to a gap between roped enclosures, not too far this side of the camping area.  Numbered marker poles are few and far between this year, but I found one in the far back corner, #59.

Excellent spot for thronging, maybe 100-200 yards long, with regular family types good distances away.  Also well back from the water, comfortably distant from the few water's edge strollers passing by.  I covered the last 1/4 mile in my orange Dore cage, saw a few men set up midway at the rear, and after standing near the pole in a long phone conversation before setting up myself, went over to say hello.  They were nude, they liked my suit, and invited me to join them.  Which I did, and soon removed the cage, enjoying simple nudity for the balance of the afternoon.  Folks passing by paid us no heed, and I took several refreshing skinny dips.

As I was leaving (with the camo bikini back on), a 30-something chap arrived and stripped to an attractive blue thong, and I met another, older thonger back closer to the parking area.   All in all, an excellent day back at East Beach after several years away, but no lovely lasses' asses in sight, alas!  May get back in early September, so here's hoping.  BTW, from signage I saw, vehicles will be allowed to drive on the beach as of September 1st.  Ugh, back to wearing at least a string.

SlidingG: great report and sounds like an excellent day. Wish we had been able to be on the beach yesterday - but work was calling us both after being away for a week. Perhaps we haven't been walking quite far enough - I have not seen anyone going nude since we have been visiting. I have dared just a few times when we'll up against the dune edge and slightly shielded by beach grasses. Perhaps it is more of an afternoon thing? We are usually there early and getting ready to head for home by about 1 or 2. We may make it down this week so I will have to look for that area. Sounds fun!

Re:East Beach Charlestown Rhode Island RI

GW - The current RI Department of Environmental Management Park and Management Area Rules and Regulations states: "3.2.4 Public nudity is prohibited".   I've heard of RI DEM police writing $100 tickets for nudity on East Beach. Not often but it has happened - so be careful.

Check out East Beach on Google Earth.  Draw a line along the beach, starting at the parking lot, about 1,200 yards  long.  From about the 1,200 yard point for the next 600 yards is the most commonly used thonging area.

What defines the best thong area for me is the absence of parking areas behind the dunes. I've been there, settled and quiet, when what amounts to an unruly mob suddenly descends from over the dunes: kids, soccer moms, umbrellas, coolers -you name it.

I try to stay away from where 4x4's can park behind the dune line - you can see those areas on Google Earth.  It takes me about 15 minutes walking along the water's edge to reach that area.  If there are nudes on East Beach this where you will see them.  If there is tranquility, this where it will be.

I usually try to get there early as well and leave around 2 or so.  The morning walk is easy but the walk back during that time of day can be brutal.  I'll start the walk back in a Parr tie side string bikini - very small but covers everything perfectly.  When the crowd starts to thicken I stop and put on a t-shirt and pair of shorts. Then go into the water up to my neck - to cool off and get my clothes wet - the evaporation of the water from the clothes during the rest of the return walk helps keep me a little cooler. And I don't hesitate to stop for a water break along the way.

Maintaining hydration is absolutely critical.  I've come close to passing out a couple of times during that return walk and have learned to take my time and stay wet,  both outside and in.  Also, have more water in your car.  Even a bottle of warm water is most welcome after that walk.  In the parking lot, take your time, wait for the A/C  to come up and keep drinking water.  Stop at the convenience store beside Michael's Garage for something cold to drink for the drive home.  It really helps.  Good luck.

SlidingG - What word processor or document format did you use for last post?  I'm using Word (.doc) and my postings look terrible,  formatting-wise.  Words run into each other and paragraph pagination is hit or miss.  It looks OK in Word but not on the board.  JM yours look good too.  Any advice along those lines would be very welcome - thanks.

Rickl494, I'm on an Apple MacBook Pro.  Can't speak to why words run together (though I am very careful), but for paragraph separation, I hit 'return' three times to get the end result after saving.  This came thru experimentation, and works now every time.

Hi DCThat's a very good idea.  I just posted two images in the Images section of my profile.  Hopefully they will help.  I added another landmark: "4x4 Parking Area" that should help narrow things down.  It's about a mile down the beach - if you make to that point backtrack about 200 yards and set up there.  I hope this helps.

Great maps, Rickl.  And remember, anyone going, that the thonging area is a 100 yard gap between long roped-off sections, and to confirm you're in the right place, pole marker #59 is in the right rear corner.

I'm sure this is covered somewhere, but if you are coming down the road in Westerly, with Benny's and Walmart on your left, you keep going until the road goes left, and drive until you get to East Beach Rd?   Last and only time I was there was a few years ago.  I wanted to take a left and park down that dirt road, in "that" parking lot behind the dunes, but the kids taking money told me no, that was for families.  I often wonder if they just wanted me to park in the first lot you get to, so they'd get the money.   It was just me back then, nude but back up against the dunes, a guy in a thong who kept staring at me, a topless woman and her BF or husband in speedos.  I admit, I walked by them to the water and back, twice, for the thrill of it.  Not sure what is or isn't allowed here, so I'll only hint at the fact that I was "halfway" when walking to the water and back.  Couldn't help it.

Leanguy, well the parkng lot is for everyone, as long as you have $$ or a sticker. But naked is definitely NOT allowed. Maybe being naked at the edge of the dunes, shielded by the grasses, but walking nude to the water is asking for trouble, IMO. There appears to be a nice tolerance for folks in minimal suits (I've gone pretty small down there) but people get nutty about nude. Complaints could wreck it for everyone else. I'd think twice about that.

Re:East Beach Charlestown Rhode Island RI

GW's right on all counts.  East Beach is a state beach where everybody can get in, over the years I've gone alone, my wife has gone alone and we've gone together with never a problem.  As long as there's a spot and you've got the money you're in.   Even if the "Parking Lot Full" sign is posted at the beginning of the dirt road go down anyway.   If someone left after that sign was posted they will let you in.  If not they will let you wait until someone leaves - it's usually not that long.

When you do find that ideal spot, behave.
The level of enforcement is directly proportional to the number of complaints.
Micro might not be as good as nude, but it's a lot better than dork shorts.

My wife and I owned a weekend house in Charlestown RI for years.  Loved East Beach.  As property owners we had a "Sand Pass" that allowed us to drive down the sand paths behind the dunes (and on the beach off-season).  I often wore thongs, we both were often nude at the end of the day.  Great beach

@wearsthongs, That naked section of east beach might be due to the new england naturist association nearby. They could be pushing for that area to be a clothing-optional beach--a much better choice for a law change.

Re:East Beach Charlestown Rhode Island RI

Solar - there is no naked section on East Beach.  The RI DEM Parks & Management Areas Rules & Regulations Section 3.1.4 specifically states "Public Nudity is Prohibited."  Section 30.1 specifies a fine "not to exceed $100" for each violation.  From what I understand the NE Naturist Association in the southern RI  area is defunct.   That organization's focus - if it still exists - is more centered on the central New England/Cape Cod area.

tn - They start collecting on Memorial Day weekend but East Beach is always open.  I've had some excellent days there in late April.  If it's in the 60's and sunny and you have a wind screen it can be a perfect tanning day.

Re:East Beach Charlestown Rhode Island RI

Go to East whenever you want.  After Memorial Day they start charging and that lot will fill up fast on a weekend. But, on a weekday its pretty easy. Even though we are leaving the area I think I'll buy a season pass again. $25 or so a visit and the cost of a pass is equaled pretty fast.
BTW, spent a lot of time at East last Summer and never encountered a single greenhead. In that respect its not at all like Plum Island. Anywhere in that Ipswich/Newburyport area where Crane Beach and Plum Island is has the potential for some serious mosquito and/or greenhead action pretty much anytime all Summer.

Finally got a stretch of nice warm days here in CT and I had a few hours to run over to East Beach yesterday, 12:30 to about 3. Pretty good crowd for a weekday but it thinned right out after a short walk. Found a spot that was about 100 feet from people on either side and stripped right down to my thong. This one is pretty small. I admit to an exhibitionist tendency so I enjoy going tiny. I keep myself fully shaved and this one only covers my stuff - stretchy enough to accommodate slight changes in "state". So it's a little bold, but not a missle or a"shaft" suit. The weather was lovely, the water cool but warm enough for a cooling dunk. I lay out, walked at the water's edge a bit, dunked several times. I passed people while walking, waved and said a friendly "hello". The response was always positive. Interesting thing: one woman who was walking towards me as I was walking was clearly doing that looking-away-so-as-to-not-interact thing and, when she was pretty close, I just said a cheerful "hello!" She turned with sort of a startle, smiled and said hello back.It was really nice and the few hours were delightful and relaxing. That's a great beach.

My trip to East Beach was foiled by going to the wrong East Beach. I spent the last two days at East Beach in Watch Hill. I was able to wear a jockstrap with no problems just the usual stares. The beach was beautiful, no problems with flies. It's secluded enough to take dips in the ocean. I was concerned a bit with trucks driving up and down the beach, but they were just environmental vehicles.I think I would go there again, but I hope to find the beach on this post.

Hey @kevinb959 You were at East Beach in Watch Hill wearing a jockstrap? wow, that was daring. But pretty awesome that there wasn't any trouble. Thats a good sign! The East Beach you were looking for is in Charlestown RI. Get on Rt1 heading for Newport and look for signs. You will be taking a right on East Beach RD and going all the way to the end, including the unpaved section. The beach fills up in just a few hours on a nice weekend but takes a little longer weekdays. During the week you could probably still grab a spot in the lot as late as 11 (but be prepared if you don't). If you can't get into the lot your only choice is to come back some other time.

Had a great day at East Beach last Wednesday. The day started off dreary with an empty beach but the sun came out around lunchtime. People were pretty equally distributed over the whole state beach, but there was plenty of space. I read, took some photos, flew a kite, ate, swam, and napped. I thonged most of the afternoon before changing into a tiny brief and going for a walk the full length of the beach. My brief has a minimal front and about half-coverage in the seat, and is semi-transparent when wet. Some splicing on the sides draws the eyes away from that though.

No reactions of any kind to my thong or brief.

My walk was nice except for the couple I saw having sex in the dunes at the eastern end of the beach. No doubt they could see me through the reeds well in advance of when I saw them (they were fully visible from the water within a certain stretch of the water's edge), so I think their being seen by me was staged. I don't appreciate being made unwilling participant in their activity, nor their contributing to the stereotype that allowing minimal swimwear invites brazen lewdness. If you are on this board, please cut it out and save it for a sex club.

It is shame what happened to this beach. It used to be a beautiful carefree beach but is now full of creepy old man having gay sex in the dunes. There were always single men acting awkward and hiding in the dunes but this summer it has become awful. Most people leave space between beach patrons especially in the 4x4 zone but this summer many of these pervs walk all the way down from the parking lot past wide open spaces and will set up next to someone to glare or strut around. After that they continue to parade back and forth for who knows why and it's pathetic and disgusting. The beach is for everybody and I understand that but please be respectful of the locals that are there to enjoy the beach and nothing else

@Sunfly - sounds like a lovely day at East Beach. We have been going there for a few years and NEVER seen anyone getting even slightly busy in the dunes. Maybe its happening way down at the eastern end (have never walked all the way down, tbh).
@Bigswells - "full" of creepy men? I have been there a lot of the past two years and I think twice I have seen an older guy who looked like he was being a wee bit creepy. But parading around and gay sex in the dunes? I have never seen anything like that. Was this your first visit or have you seen this multiple times? Block Island has a beach between Vale Beach and Black Rock Beach that only has a few people hanging out on a typical summer day but are all nude.  On East Beach you can be nude but you have to be really private about it.
Other than that you would have to go to Martha's Vineyard or take a trip up to the Ledges in VT.

Hey Jazzy3098, sadly, if you go to any beach in coastal Rhode Island and probably Connecticut and hoping to see other guys in thong swimsuits I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. I’ve been to a couple and I’m usually the only guy in a thong. You probably won’t see many women in thongs either. Just isn’t that kind of place. But, East Beach is laid-back and relaxed and people are pretty chill,  and I have seen guys in thongs once or twice there. So sorry about the flies, I don’t know it’s going on right now. I was at Weekapaug beach for a swim today (in a thong) today and there are a lot of flies. I have never seen them in either beach.

it seems that everyone that goes thronging at East Beach walks a ways east away from the parking lot and the lifeguard area. Has anyone ever been thronging, or seen anyone in a thong, near the lifeguard area?  I won't have the courage to strip to a thong in that location (though I would farther down the beach) but I'm wondering whether it will be ok for my wife to wear a thong in the lifeguard area?

Sorry guys but east Beach to me is a waist of my time I rather lay out Naked in my boat on a pond when no one is around.  Atleast then I am not getting bitten by flies or hit on by gay guys when I am not interested in that. Folks lets remember nude is not lude and it has nothing to do with sex it is all about body acceptance.

@afriendlycouple - well, it gets crowded right there by the lifeguards (when they are there). I never stick around there because, regardless of what I am wearing or not wearing, I like to have a little space to myself. Same for my wife. Certainly having more space is conducive to wearing brief swimwear, or going topless for the ladies. But I'd be very surprised if there were any problems for a woman in a thong (or briefer) anywhere on East Beach. For men, I'd say it would be best to walk a little bit. Even 5 minutes gets you out of that busy zone, generally. Its important to remember that East Beach is very much a family with kids and young people's beach right there are the lifeguard chair. That particular demographic can be a little weird about too much skin, lol.Have fun. I love East Beach.

What's the latest on parking at East Beach?  Having moved from the area, I haven't been there in several years, but expect to make it later this summer.

Used to be I'd arrive before daybreak, pass the toll station, and park ahead of the chained-off area -- 6-8 spaces were available -- and stay there all day free of charge.  I loved hiking down the beach in the buff, watching the sunrise as I sipped my morning brew.  Could get all the way to the cut and back to my spot for the day before having to put something on, oftentimes not even then.  Hope to repeat that pleasant experience this summer.

First day at East Beach in a few years.  It was a perfectly clear day with a moderate sea breeze - just enough to keep the bugs at bay.   After walking almost a mile I set up with not a soul in sight.  The dunes are still absent (from Super Storm Sandy) and a few plover areas were still roped off.  I spent the day in a very small Dore tie side g-string, mostly with strings untied for maximum sun.

About an hour I arrived a guy appeared directly behind me and set up a windscreen.  He  introduced himself to assure me that he was not a weirdo (his word) - and he wasn't. He was a fellow long time nudist frustrated by the lack of nude beaches in the area.

After a pleasant conversation I ended up giving him the "thongboard" web address along with one for Travel Talk Online and Orient Beach (St. Martin).  It was an altogether serene day with very few walkers.  I was even able to hitch a ride back with the non-weirdo fellow nudist to the parking lot saving a long walk inthe brutal sun.  That was very much appreciated.  Altogether a very nice day at East Beach.
