I love to wear thong underwear, and I also love to use steam rooms at the gym. As much as I would love to wear a thong swimsuit in the steam room, the truth is I just don't think I have the courage to do so, and I don't really feel is it the right thing to wear in an area where theoretically a younger person could walk in.
So as a matter of compromise, I finally bought a brief style swimsuit with about a 1.5" band. I've worn it to the gym steam room a couple of times not and I really enjoy the feeling of knowing I had the courage to wear it. Frankly I'm not in the best of shape but I'm old enough that I really don't care what others think all that much!
Side note: I don't get why anybody wants to sit in a room and sweat and be sitting in big shorts soaked with their sweat!! This is why I much prefer the minimal fabric while steaming.
I've had no comments made toward me but plenty of questioning stares, mainly because I'm the only one wearing anything remotely close to a Speedo (and maybe because I'm not fit.)
From the steam room I rinse and jump in the pool to cool off. That means a little bit of time walking in front of others in plain view... Which is where most of the staring comes from.
This site gave me the courage to buy it and wear it. Plus to be honest, this whole Me Too thing has got me thinking, "If you can wear a tight, Hawaiian pattern then me too!!" And I'm looking forward to wearing it on vacation. Yes, wearing it also encourages me to exercise a bit more.
So, I'm not in a thong at the steam room yet, but the brief works for now. PS. I bought it from Maris Equi for $23 on eBay

This is what I wear in various colors to the pools in our "over 55" gated community.
