JM:  I have to tell you a story if thats OK.  I'm new to this thongboard.  I've read many of the threads and found out that I'm not alone in my love for thongs.  Three years ago I was in Ft. Lauderdale and saw you.  It had to be you!  I was driving up A1A one morning and was north of Sunrise.  There you were running on the beach.  I was elated to see this guy running in a thong on the beach.  I was so impressed.  The next day the same thing happened.  I say you again running the beach.  You became my thong "hero".

I thought to myself, "how can this guy be so comfortable to do that" and wear/run a thong on the beach.  I had only worn skimpy bikinis up that point.

Last year it rained my first 3 days in F.L.  I didn't get to see you.  So, I went on to Haulover for the remainder of the week.

I say all this to thank you for the information about thong wearing.  I guess I needed to reassured that I was OK to be in a thong at Ft. Lauderdale. Now I know that I can be free to be me when I arrive there in March.  I too can walk and run in a thong and feel good about myself.  Your information that I've found on this board is invaluable. I suspect that you are a very nice guy and I stand in awe of YOU.  God bless and keep running!

Glad I could provide some inspiration, but in the end the courage has to come from inside you.

Don't expect to see me out running in a thong every day.  I am not a circus act and don't run on a fixed schedule or time.

Due to injury I have not been running much at all in the last few months but hope to return to a regular schedule after the start of the year.

It is the middle of December, the 16th, and it was 85 in the shade today, only dropping to 76 as it got close to midnight. Yesterday broke the prior record for the middle of December by 2 degrees.  Forecast is that it should only top out at 83 today, Wednesday, and finally cool off a bit by the weekend.

I have been doing some inquiries to hotels about their thong a g-string permissiveness.

To Cheston House in Ft. Lauderdale (chestonhouse.com):

I am considering a stay at your hotel however I do have a question. Do you permit Thong and g-string swimwear at the beaches and pool areas. The trip would be planned in mid to late January away from the holiday seasons.

Thank you, Jim.

Here is a reply from Cheston House:

Jim, The beaches are thong friendly in Fort Lauderdale. As for the Cheston House, you can wear whatever you like. We do have a clothing-optional environment on the ground level. Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.  Earl

I would agree south beach is usually better but I still see plenty of thongs at Fort Lauderdale as well.

I agree with lindors, most of the clothing optional hotels Fort Lauderdale are gay, or are taken over by the large and vibrant gay community.
If the idea of the pool being populated by gay nude men gives you the willies then they are probably not a good choice for accommodation.

Somewhere I heard someone say something about a place called Seagate in Ft L...well I looked it up and it seems there's a new clothing optional swingers place just off the beach. Seems any kind of expos-ur suit would go there!

Different from Seagate in Delray Beach!!

Here a link to the Seagate Clothing Optional Resort >http://www.seagateresort.com/

I was not aware of this place.  Seems like they have renovated an old hotel that once was a complete dump and turned it into a clothing optional / swinging life style hotel.  Have not been there myself so cannot give you a first hand report.

If they are a new company and have truly renovated the place then they would do well to change the name for the building comes with a lot of bad user reviews from the past years.

If you go, or just make inquires, tell them you found their resort through the Thong Wearers Message Board.

The name will be confused with the luxrious new Seagate in Delray, and some other places including in Boynton Beach.  So far TripAdvisor still has people putting trashing reviews as of last week- probably for stays months ago....but anyone going there will know about the change I'd hope!

I dont know this exact place but don't know how they deal with the increasing high rise neighbors...seems their walled place and all the fun in the sun would be only a telescope away from some of those condos.  I've stayed at a couple of places in that neighborhood over the years that are now torn down and 20-30 story buildings are there.

Wait a minute that's a brilliant plan to sell those distressed condos!!!  A 24 hr show out the window! A free telescope with each unit sold!

I am staying in Fort Lauderdale right now, on the north end of town.  The biggest problem here, and it's only on the north end where I am is beach accessibility.  I spoke with the front desk clerk at my hotel, which is only about 300 yds from the ocean, and he gave me quite a bit of info about this area.  For example, the old zoning laws only stipulated a public beach access every 1/2 mile, so you can walk a long distance with the ocean only 50 yds away and only separated from you by some condo owner's fence.  In spite of its bad rep, I must say, there is something to be said for socialism in this respect.  Where I am, the condos own the beach all the way down to the high tide line.  The hotel where I am staying supposedly has an agreement with some Tiki bar on the beach nearby, but I tried entering the beach through there about 9 am yesterday and it became clear to me the agreement doesn't amount to anything.  I was wearing a pair of running shorts and no shirt and explained the situation to the door man.  He said I should check with the staff inside, but they might not allow it because I didn't have a shirt.  So, I went inside and asked, and one hispanic lady was pretty friendly about the situation and just pointed the way on through.  There was another guy, who spoke with a sort of New York Mafia accent, that was not so friendly.  He seemed to think the agreement was with somebody else.  Then, I've also heard of people utilizing such agreements with beach front property owners being told they can't bring their own coolers, chairs, etc. because they establishment sells those things.  The important thing I learn from all this is that there is simply no substitute for a simple public access trail or sidewalk owned by the public, not some business trying to sell you stuff.  For this reason, I just drive one down the beach, but what sucks about that is having these 24-7 parking meters that charge up to $2.00/hr.  They range from $1 to $2/hr from West Palm down to Miami Beach.

If you stay in Ft. Lauderdale and want beach access, it's important to chose a hotel in the main part of town, where there are no condos directly on the beach.  In that area, you can simply step across every few hundred feet and get on or off the beach.  The only down side is it's a very narrow beach.

Almost all of Fort Lauderdale beach is accessible to the general public, without walking for miles, except two sections:

The first is the residential section SOUTH of the main beach, (South of SE 17th street).  There is about a mile without public access between the footpath by the port entrance (the jetties in local teen speak) and the public access from at the South Beach parking lot across from Baha Mar.  This is not normally a problem for tourists since the only buildings behind that section of beach are private houses, and they have their own private club foot path. The only public footpath is down just North of the breakwater at the entrance to the port.

Running from the South parking lot by the  Yankie Clipper Hotel, going North, there is full and total public access for the next 3 miles.

At the North end of Fort Lauderdale beach, from where the buildings and hotels start on the beach side, there is periodic beach access paths and parks every 1/4 of a mile in between the waterfront homes. No parking on the side street but parking in the pocket parks and parking lots that have been setup between the houses.  For most beach access points there is corresponding parking. This continues until you get to the last easy public beach access point located at the end of Oakland Park Blvd. While there is some parking at that point it is limited.

From there north, for the next mile, is the condo canyon of Galt Ocean Mile. No public beach access for that mile. Shortly after that, starting at Flamingo Av, for about the next mile there is beach access every block.  This extends about half a mile either side of Commercial Blvd, with section of small hotels, motels and shops near and around Commercial Blvd.  Along with the beach access at every block there are several pocket parks and parking lots by the beach.

After the north end of of Pine, going North again, you are now out of the City of Fort Lauderdale.  While people often consider this the grater Fort Lauderdale area you are actually in the citys of Pompano Beach or Sea Ranch Lakes.

As you head North in Pompano Beach, there is another stretch of about a mile with only one public beach access, and no nearby parking, until you get to South 14th in the city of Pompano Beach.  Then the public access continues about every block or so, with a large public beach and lots of parking around Atlantic Blvd.

As you found out, in Fort Lauderdale there is that one condo canyon along Galt Ocean Mile with no public beach access points.  If you want to stay up there then you need to stay at a property that is on the beach, or that has a private arrangement to access the beach.

Galt Ocean Mile is what happens when you have unrestrained development. Wall to wall condos.  Don't stay there. You are about four miles too far North! If staying in someones condo along Galt Ocean Mile, I suggest you rent or purchase a bicycle on your first day, since the closest beach access may be up to 10 minutes walk ( up to 1/2 mile away).

A bicycle is also a good idea for anyone staying someplace inland from the beach where they are more than a quick walk away.  If you are more than 2 miles inland, then a car may be a better option.

As Nospam_TN found out, the closest beach to the South of the condos at Galt Ocean Mile is skinny. (Oakland Park Blvd access).  It was heavily eroded in the last couple of big storms.  But if you keep going another couple of miles south and it gets a lot wider, and continues to widen as you progress South towards the main Fort Lauderdale beach, getting wider still as you get down to Las Olas Blvd, and still wider as you go South to the port.

I did find that beach today just south of the swimming hall of fame, where the beach is wider.  The only bad thing is $1.75/hr parking meters that you cannot add time to without wasting money until the very moment it expires.  In other words, the parking system lets you park anywhere, no numbered spaces, but it dispenses a paper receipt stating that it's good until whatever time you paid for.  If you pay $1.75 at 10 am, it's good until 11 am.  Want to add time, and you pretty much have to do it at 11 am.  This does suck, but in the big picture, it's not that big of a deal for me, since I don't live here and have to put up with this crap every day like the locals do.

The other thing is, I went to that skinny beach on the north end again for a little while this morning, and while no one there is no gatekeeper there demanding proof of gayness for all who enter, it does seem like a more gay-oriented part of the beach, perhaps because of the seclusion.  I did see what appeared to be gay couples there.  As would be expected, not any of them took any interest in me whatsover.  However, in hindsight, I realize there were several solo males "cruising" the area, hanging around the sidewalks, and one did leave a note with a crude sexual comment on my car before I left.  It was only a comment, not an invitation to "meet somewhere", so I just wadded it up and threw it down when I found it rather than reporting it to the cops.  This behavior, I do not understand.  As a straight man, if I did this to a woman, it would get me slapped or arrested for stalking if discovered.  But, as I've said before, the guy who left it probably has a wife and kids at home and is doing this secretly.

Overall, Fort Lauderdale is one of the best thong-friendly beaches in the country.  One just needs to strategically avoid a few problem areas and all is good.  One strange thing I noticed is several tunnels that go under A1A between the beach and the hotels/condos.  At first, I thought these were restrooms until I stuck my head in and look around.

There once was a shop on Las Olas Blvd called J. Milles. It had a range of men's swimsuits, shorts and thongs. It closed and moved to Broward Blvd, and after several years there closed again and moved to North Federal Highway, just south of Sunrise.

I was driving by on Saturday morning and noticed a sign in the window that said, "All swimsuits $5".  I stopped but the store was still closed.

On Sunday I was passing by again and found the store open.  The owner is closing down for the Summer and having a fire side sale before he goes.  Only about 40 thongs left, but still many bikini, shorts and other cloths. All cloths are $5 till he closes up for the summer, some time early this week.  He started the $5 sale on Friday.

I only found one thong I liked, but after trying on lots of cloths did find two pairs of Pistol Peat shorts that fit and a range of sleeve less singlets.  For $5 each it was a very good deal.

So if you are in Fort Lauderdale, and don't mind shopping in a store that caters to the gay community, run on over and see what he has left.  The place was packed when I was there: It is small so easily packed.  I think things are going out the door fast.  Since most are very good brands, you could purchase a rack full and make money re-selling them again on ebay.

I know where you are talking about.  We passed by those places today about 11 AM, and they were full.  So, we drove on down to Hollywood Beach where they allowed unlimited parking in the garage for $5.  All the beaches were very packed today.  There was not a spot at the meters in Ft. Lauderdale and there was a long line to John Lloyd State Park and/or Dania city beach.

This comes down to getting to the beach early, before all the parking spaces are full.  If you go to Fort Lauderdale Beach tomorrow, Memorial Day, I suggest going early.

The last parking lot to fill is the one furthest from the beach, the 1,000 space lot by the IC waterway. Last time I checked it was the least expensive.
If approaching via Las Olas Blvd - make the very first right hand turn as come down the slope of the drawbridge. This road circles around under the bridge and the parking is then on your right.
If approaching via 17th Street Causeway, - make a left on Las Olas and take the right hand turn after the gas station, just before the Las Olas bridge.

Both will get you to a huge parking lot that is the last to fill up, becuase it is two to three blocks back from the beach.

If you must get up late, and miss the wonderful mornings at the beach when it is still cool enough to walk on the sand, then think about taking the buss from a parking lot.  You could try the Galaria Mall on Sunrise Blvd, (1/4 mile from the beach and an easy 10 minutes walk or two minute bus ride) or some place on 17th street, (about a mile or so, #40 bus).  While the bus may run every 15 to 20 minutes on weekdays they are a lot less frequent on weekends or major holidays.

I suggest the real solution is to get up and go early.  In the summer the mornings are normally clear, sunny and not to hot and muggy, while the afternoons often cloud over and rain.  Go early.

UPDATE:  I was on the beach this Memorial Monday morning. By 11am the beach front lots and spaces were full and cars were circulating around like vultures.  I think many people want space in the beach front lots because they don't want to walk far with their Memorial Day at the beach gear.... Cooler, umbrella, beach chairs and kit.

At around noon, when I left the beach, the two lots that are a couple of blocks back from the beach, located both North,  South and under the Las Olas Bridge were still more than half empty.  The lot to the south of the bridge was only about 15% to 20% full.

I went to the store yesterday and Jerry (J) helped me find several bikinis.  The brands were Pistol Pete, Sauvage and Tulio - talk about a deal.
Unfortunately, there were minimal thongs - none that peeked my interest as most would be classified as "Novelty".  I did find several T's and Sun-Glasses and they were $5.00 also!

The BBC were on the beach again toady working on their documentary.  They had two camera and sound crews and a shade tent that looks like it would blow down if someone sneezed. I vounteered to lend them my stronger shade tent.

For folks that were asking, I am back to running the beach, more or less regularly three or four days a week. Mostly just from life guard stations 5 to 17 and back, but sometimes longer if I get up early when it is cool or have extra energy.

Good to hear Jim.   They were there while I was there. I was wondering what company they were with. I will be coming back in October. I had a good time while i was there.  I met a lot of very nice people.  Which I should say, I was at the big parking lot rinsing off, and a guy starting rambling about me being in a thong, well... the girl that was with him, did not care at all for his comments towards me, to the point she got very irritated at him. It was obvious she was getting mad for being embarrassed at his remarks, telling his sternly that there is nothing wrong at all with my attire and that I had more guts than he ever would have ....yada yada yada.. she just kept letting him have it.
I thanked her for her support and went on my way.

Over all A very nice time, though The sun in the Keys was intense, and I actually got to see another member from this board, though I did not speak to them, as I wasn't 100% sure it was them.
I will be back. I hope to see you next time around Jim.

I recently moved from LA to Fort Lauderdale and am loving it.  I had the choice of Miami or LA and I just love the "neighborhood" of Fort Lauderdale.  It's a community and a neighborhood - not a city.  That being said, I just read this entire thread and am so happy to report that the thongs are back - if you know where to go.  My favorite spot is at the North End - just before the condos.  I always see someone in a thong.  This is the gay section and I have met many nice people.  Yes, it's a pick-up place, but all of Fort Lauderdale is a pick-up place; if that's what you are seeking.  I have to admit that I have been approached and when I explained that I was in a monogamous relationship - all was well.
As for the shopping for thongs, there are several Brick and Mortar stores.  My favorite is Bottom and Tops, as they have a shop in Wilton Manor's Plaza and an outlet (soon to become a store that only sells items under $10.00).  J Miles will be open again in September as the owner is on vacation.  Pride Factory has a nice assortment of your standard designer suits.   Then there is Gay Mart, also in WM Plaza, offers lots of undies and a few thongs.  Nonetheless, this is the best area I know for buying skimpy gear.
I feel like I am on the Chamber of Commerce for Fort Lauderdale, but it's a really great place.  If you want non-stop night-life, are into designer labelsl and want to uber chic and high priced & chic restaurants, then Miami might suit you better - and there is nothing wrong with any of that!  If you like a more calm and "get to know you" environment, then I suggest you try Fort Lauderdale - especially the beach at 21st street.

After a month of filming on Fort Lauderdale beach the BBC are going home.  I could not believe they shot that much footage for just an hour show.  As I suspected this will appear as a series of shows, a sort of reality show, following the kids who came over to join the junior life guard summer camp.

In the US it is common for affluent teen age kids to go to summer camp. Out of sight and out of mind, pay someone else to provide the adventures of teenage years. In the US we have summer camps in the mountains, on lakes, for computer nerds, future prom queens, etc. You name it, there is a summer camp for that. In this case the human intrest story is about the very white kids from Europe coming over and spending a month doing the Fort Lauderdale Junior Life Guard program.

This is a program for local kids, so the film crew had to rent a house to house the kids they brought over. They rented a good sized house over off Riverland road. Riverland road is inland on the SW side of the town, some ways from he beach. Over there they were able to rent a big house for not too much money, that had, according to the crew, the advantage of coming with a van so they could transport the kids back and forth.

Most of the beach action appears to have all been filmed at the exact point where I start my morning beach runs. You won't see me in the shots because I am sure they are trying to keep them more PG so as to keep them appropriate for children's hour. My bicycle locked to the lamppost, behind the white wall, is more likely to be in the final than I am.

Rachel, the director, has used a number of cameras on diffrent days. Mostly shooting with standard camera's on a tripod or shoulder, but some days they rented underwater gear and on others they rented a boom or crane. I think the UK crew are probably more accustom to shooting on gray days or with more indirect light, for I was surprised that they often interviewed people in very bright sunlight against high contrast sand, with the person squinting into the camera. I would have stood the interviewee in some shade or had someone hold a diffuser to lessen the contrast and decrease the squinting.

So for all you who have asked what the beach looks like, watch the BBC show when it airs. But remember they shot on only one very small section of the beach.  Almost all of the beach shots were done within a 300 foot radius of the film crews shade tent that was erected every day in the lee of LifeGuard stand #5.  I can't blame them, shade is needed, because what you won't see from the TV is just how dang hot and sticky it is here in the middle of the summer!   It is better for people in swimsuits becuase we can be in and out of the sea, or under the ubiquitous fresh water showers, but for the film crew in regular cloths, even summer cloths, it must have been very uncomfortable.

While the film crew were not smart enough to wear swimsuits and stay wet, the kids in the show are. The girls in the show are wearing normal bikinis, which by some American 'team' standards would be considered brief, and the boys are all wearing red shorts, just like the adult male lifeguards on the beach. As well as filming the kids playing at lifeguard training, they also interviewed and filmed some of the real lifeguards employed by the city.  Maybe it is just me, but it seems that having a film crew around for a full month has some of the men and women life guards working on their tans and looks, just as hard as the kids are working on their beach and water skills.

The results should be interesting to see. Since we don't get many of the BBC shows here if anyone in the UK sees the shows when they air I would appropriate it if they could send me a copy. Preferably digital and not a VHS. Maybe someone can post a heads up when it appears in the BBC program guide.

This show may do for British and Irish teens what Baywatch did for US kids. Watch out for a lot of boys in red shorts and girls in bikini's that look like the ones on the pro volleyball tour. i.e. smaller rears with team letters on the back.  If I was a retailer in the UK I would be stocking ones identical to the kids in the show for next spring.

While you are in Fort Lauderdale, when the sun is to hot, or the weather is to windy for the beach, you may want to take a ride on one of the water bus or water taxi.

underwater,  Beach Place is on the main strip of beach front stores.  Beach Place is a small complex with stores and bars out front and the hotel is behind it.

This is a very mixed section of beach. You will find mostly tourists and local families who park in the multi story Beach Place paring. The families like this section because they can use the bathrooms and facilities at Beach Place.  Mostly family groups or groups of women / teenage girls.
Just to the north is the main gay section of the beach, just to the south is the main bar/drinking/social section of the beach.  So Beach Place is in the hart of a very varied group of people.
In front of Beach Place the tourists tend to take the rental chairs and umbrellas and  the locals tend to just use their own towels on the the sand.  ( If he locals were to use beach chairs and coolers they are more likely to have parked at the parking lot at Las Olas so they have a shorter distance to carry their chairs.)
Walking north you will go through the short gay section and then find a narrower beach that is mostly tourists for the next 1/2 mile.  Going south you will find a wide beach with more locals and people who drove to the beach.

All of Fort Lauderdale beach is thong friendly, but sometimes an idiot will say something stupid.  If a negative comment or look would annoy you and spoil your day then you may want to avoid the more crowded sections where teen boys or rednecks might be present. You have a several options.
You can lay out in the short gay section just north of Beach Place for teen boys and rednecks avoid it like the plague, the disadvantage is you are likely to be hit on by gay men.
You can thong right in front of Beach Place, but you may get disproving looks from some of the old maids (although I must say this is the one section of beach where groups of girls have cheered when I ran by in a thong).
For the quietest section near Beach Place, the bit of beach where you are least likely to get comments from teen boys or rednecks, walk 1/3 of a mile south to a point just south of lifegard stand #5.  This section is the lest crowded and almost always free of teen boys and rednecks. It is never busy, even on a major holiday weekend.

Took my usual run on the beach this morning.  WINDY to day. Slow running up, but with the wind behind me I flew back down the beach, covering the return two and a half miles in 21 minutes, which ain't bad on the sand.
I came across a picture that sums up what a morning run on Fort Lauderdale beach is like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/beleaveme/4589567700/in/photostream/
It is not a picture of me. It was probably taken earlier in the day than when I run, but it goes give an impression of the fresh feeling the beach has in the mornings.

If you are very early, or it rains, or is very windy like today there are very few people on the beach, like in the photo.
On the other hand, if you like to check your email and internet before heading out for a morning run, then there more people about and it is likely to be a tad bit hotter.
The early mornings are often the nicest time to be on the beach, especially in the summer when the rest of the day is way to hot.  I recommend everyone make an effort to get out early and enjoy what is often the best part of the day.

This is an OLD bit of news. OLDER than this message board, but it is about Thonging in Fort Lauderdale.

FROM Feb 1992 over 18 years ago !!
____________________________

Disturbed about a man in a thong bathing suit, Wendy Lueder called City Hall for help.

She got a letter in reply signed, City Commissioner Cary Keno.

``A little `sun on your buns` is not a bad thing in a city that boasts year- round sunshine,`` Keno wrote. ``Do not be a prude, Mrs. Lueder. Let our beach-goers enjoy our `art in public places.```

Lueder was baffled. Especially since she never specifically wrote or called Keno, and he is not the commissioner for her district. She has never met Keno.

``He just took it upon himself to write the letter,`` said Lueder, 45, an artist and former college philosophy instructor.

Lueder said she and her mother, 75, have been disturbed each morning on their daily beach walks by a man in a thong bathing suit who is ``confrontational.`` She knew the bottomless bathing suits are prohibited at state-operated parks and beaches and called City Hall to see if there was interest in a similar ordinance for local beaches.

An administrative assistant wrote a memo describing Lueder`s concerns and put a copy in each commissioner`s mail file.

Keno assumed that it was women in thongs that Lueder was opposed to.  ``I, for one, do not personally view a woman`s scantily bikini-clad body as immoral, but rather as a beautiful art form,`` Keno wrote. His letter continued to defend ``less attire`` as something to which the city`s European and South American tourists are accustomed.

``She is a prude. What can I say?`` Keno said. ``I stand by what I wrote. ``Damn if I`m going to lead a fight against thongs.``

Lueder was less than impressed. Being called a prude ``was the most offensive part of the letter. I found it very offensive and sophomoric and adolescent,`` she said. ``If you knew me, I am the farthest thing from a prude.``

She has shown the letter to friends, whom she says are ``as outraged as I am.``

Keno said he felt compelled to respond to the memo because ``nobody else wanted to deal with it. I don`t mind taking on the hot potatoes. I don`t see where the problem is.``

His advice to Lueder?  ``Tell that prude to open up, keep an open mind and keep our tourists,`` Keno said. ``I dismiss her complaint as that of a prude.``

I am straight, and I believe there are quite a nice mix of bi, gay and straight membershere.  There are however more gals in thongs on the beaches here in Ft.  Lauderdale than there are men."To each his own".

Yes, there are a lot of stright men who wear thongs on the beach. For example, I am straight.  For the most part I do not know the sexual orientation of the men I see wearing thongs.  Of the few I do, most are stright.  From that I would guess, like most of the population, a large percentage of men and women who wear thongs on the Fort Lauderdale beach are stright. There are certainly a lot more women wearing thongs than men.

By asking this question in this thread I assume you are asking about stright or gay men on the beach in Fort Lauderdale.  We do have a higher percentage of openly gay men and women than most communities. I do not know if that is becuase we attract gay residents or if it is just becuase we have a reasonably liberal comunity so they are more likely to be open about their sexual orientation. Even so, it is not easy to guess a thong wearers sexual orientation unless their are other clues too. I do not know if you are looking for gay friends, or trying to avoid them.

There is one distinct part of the beach where gay people tend to setup, mostly the gay men.  This is the bit of beach across from the Merrywether Hotel.  The men tend to be fitter and in shorter shorts or speedos than the general population, but you seldom see any of them in thongs. I don't know why that is, they just seem to prefer square cuts and speedos. If I see a man in a thong on that short section of the beach I would tend to assume he was gay, because he is in the self identified gay section, not because he is wearing a thong.

The gay women don't tend to congregate in one place but are evenly scattered all up and down the beach. It seems to me that more of the women wearing thongs are stright, or accompanied by a guy which would suggest the same.  It could be that a lot of the women thonging together are stright too, just friends out to get some sun. The ones with kids in tow are probably stright too.  I think that's because there are just more straights than gays.  I know quite a few stright women who wear thongs, and only thongs, on the beach.

Most of the gay population are DINK's  (Double Income No Kids) so they tend to have extra spending money which is helping keep our local economy thriving even during this recession.  They also go round fixing up the old houses and generally improving the neighborhoods and property values.  Because you can't tell someones sexual orientation by observation, they just blend in, both on and off the beach.

People who assume I must be gay because they see me running down Fort Lauderdale beach in a thong are wrong, but that is there problem, not mine. If you see a man in a thong on Fort Lauderdale beach don't assume they are gay, they are probably not, it might even be me.

Or it might be me.  Wife and I making plans for Fort Lauderdale in late February/early March.  Plan to stay on the beach and hope to find a moderately-priced, moderately-sized hotel that is thong friendly and is near attractions that will occupy my non-thonging wife while I'm out running and sunning my buns.  JM, I know you run in the soft sand up where it's level, but I prefer firm sand near the water's edge if the grade isn't too steep.  How is it there at Fort Lauderdale?  For instance, nothing beats Horseshoe Bay on Bermuda (where we'll be over Christmas) -- firm and practically level next to the water -- but while I sun and swim in a thong there, I'm more comfortable in running shorts while running.  Thong running at Fort Lauderdale will be a joy!  Thanks, JM, for setting a standard that allows us visitors to do likewise comfortably.  I'll respect your hard work by behaving responsibly, embracing, for instance, your habit of greeting passersby with a cheery 'Good morning'.  Hey, World, we thongers are a decent lot.

The front of the beach faces the Atlantic, so when the wind blows the surf cuts a fairly steep front on the beach. Sometimes, if the tide is just right, running along the waters edge is good, firm and not to steep.  Mostly the waves make the front face of the beach uneven footing and a bit hard going. It may be firm one moment and the next you are sinking up to your ankles in sand.

I get a more more consistent footing when running in the tracks left by the vehicles which ride along the flat top of the beach. But sometimes I run by the waters edge, if the tide and conditions are right, or the sand on top is too hot, or just for a change of pace.

JM, we just got back from a week in Key West followed a week in Ft. Lauderdale. I was wondering if I saw you running last Wednesday around noon going south in a red thong? Since I'm a lot older than you and was well behind you at the waters edge when I saw (you?) there was no way I was going to catch up.

Anyway I spent the entire week on the beach or at the hotel pool and never wore anything larger than a very small thong- WHAT A WEEK!!!!

Going south, late on Wednesday morning, could well have been me. I am not the only person who runs on the beach, nor the only thonger, but there are not many other thong runners. Probably a good guess.

I'm here in Lauderdale on a 4 day mini vacation. I traveled here to find a hotel/motel for the Thongers Weekend next Summer.  I spent one entire day just checking places that might work.  Thanks to Surfguy, a Fort Lauderdale board friend, who checked things out with me.   I've narrowed it down to 2 or 3 places that would good for us.  Now, just got to wait for them to get back with me on available dates and rates.  I tried to catch JM running on the beach Friday morning but didn't see him.  Perhaps you didn't run that morning, JM.  I am in awe of this place every time I come here.  There is just no place like South Florida.  I saw thongs and skimpy bikinis all up and down the beach. No problem anywhere here.  Today I drove down to Haulover, another favorite place of mine.   It just blows my mind to see thousands of nude people on that stretch of beach.  I even walked north of the nude beach in my Skinz stuffit g string.  I met up with families and  high school / college age guys along the way in dork shorts who didn't bat an eye.  No form of harrassment here, believe  me.  Thongs and g's are totally acceptable forms of swimwear.  If you've never been here, put this place on your "must visit" list.  You will love it!  I will post later what I come up with on a date and place for the Thongers Weekend.

I’m pumped!  Our frequent flier trip to South Florida, 8 nights the first of March, has finally gone from pipedream to reality, with all reservations made.  Single nights at start and finish in Fort Lauderdale, plus two nights each in Key West, Naples and Sanibel Island.  Looks like I can thong/string at all the hotels and beaches along the way, with no need to push my agenda at my wife’s expense.  We’ll do lots of stuff together, just relax and take things as they come.  That’s often hard when travelling because she has to avoid too much sun, doesn’t swim, and quickly gets bored at the beach, yet still wants to do everything together and depends on me to get around.  So I often miss things I really want to do.

My only agenda item on this trip will be trying to squeeze in a visit to Haulover.  I’ll invite her along,  of course, but I expect she’ll demur -- she’s never accompanied me to a c/o beach, though sometimes ‘allows‘ me that pleasure when we’re far from home.  Question, anyone:  are there trees and shade on the textile part of Haulover?  She could read a book there while I enjoyed the sun and surf au natural further north.

Question for JM:  can you suggest a nice cafe along A1A near the Hall of Fame for some afternoon refreshment -- cool drinks, ice cream, whatever -- maybe where you go for post-run breakfasts?  We plan to stroll up the Promenade towards Las Olas after checking into Day’s Inn at Harbor Drive around 3:00, maybe visit the Hall of Fame along the way.   We’ll return along the beach to admire the human scenery (at least I will, hope the babes are still out), also take a swim.  I figure my thong will dry by the time my shorts come back on to cross A1A to the hotel.

Inspired by your example, JM, I plan to run on the beach the next morning while my wife does her hair, first heading south to the breakwater, then north to Las Olas, then back to the hotel.  That’s about 4 miles, isn’t it?  I’ll cross the highway in my onionskins, then roll them into a ball in my fist, running in my favorite tan-thru sliding g-string (it’s in my Images labeled “Nevis - Dec. ’05”).

So to recap my questions:  a nice cafe along A1A near the Hall of Fame?  is my run course about 4 miles?  and, any shade on Haulover’s textile beach?  Thanks.

There are a large number of beach side lunch venues.   For Breakfast bagel, omelet and coffee sort of place I would recommend St Barts only becuase it is a local watering hole.  For lunch, take your pick.  Everything from Bubba Shrimp on up.

You probably do not need to cover up when crossing the road, but if you feel more comfortable when passing through the hotel lobby then this makes sense.  Also makes sense if going into an upscale restaurant.

Run distances: Las Olas to the breakwater and back is about 3 miles.  Las Olas to sunrise and back is also about 3 miles. I prefer the second route becuase there are fresh water showers every block where you can drink, and there are less stones to stub my toes on.  The first route is better if you are at all embarrassed at what people look at or think, for the southern section has limited access and very few people, except for a couple of hotels.

Hey, thanks for the info, JM.  St Barts?  Hmmmm, the name evokes fond memories; how apropos, considering our plan to visit Haulover the next day enroute to Key West.

We’ll be strolling the beach together the first afternoon, doubt crossing A1A in my thong will fly.  Maybe next morning when I head out running, it would save having to carry or stash my shorts.

Good running route tips.  I’ll play it by ear where and how far I go, but plan to shower back at the hotel.  Running on vacation is a great way to explore, covering more ground than walking.  Also no fretting about sweating, it's a given.  Looking forward to testing my comfort level in just a string, it’s surely not the ‘wilderness’ of RI’s East Beach.

Whoops!  Over breakfast this morning my wife commented how she wanted me to look nice on our trip to South Florida.  Translation:  “I hope you don’t insist in wearing your thongs everywhere we go; you need to dress appropriately.  Maybe you’ll find a nice suit down there like other men are wearing”.

Heck, I was planning to take only thongs and strings, plus a pair of boardies for the occasional coverup.  Our first stop is Fort Lauderdale, hope the guys there are showing lots of skin, help my cause for when we go shopping.  A new speedo or squarecut would be fine, wear it now and then to prove I’m a reasonable guy, like at each new hotel while scoping things out, then revert to my thong declaring I’ve learned they're okay.

Just to spice things up a bit while modelling a few suits for her at some shop, I’ll slip a racy string bikini into the mix.  Maybe that’ll get her vote!  Any good shops along A1A in Fort Lauderdale?

No thong shopping on A1A is abysmal.  Mostly tacky tourist tshirts and towels.  You may have thought the large gay population would encourage stores to encourage thongs, but because there are better gay stores in places like Wilton Mannors, that have stylish men's cloths and thongs, local men would not consider shopping on A1A.
Depending where on the beach you are, and what time of day, you may not see any other men in thongs at all.  The only place you will see lots of square cuts and speedos is in the gay mens section across from the Merywether.
I don't suggest trying to find good speedo type suits or thongs on A1A.  A store may have some, I do not know, becuase like most local men it is the last place I would want to shop or look.

Wearing your cover up shorts when in the hotel and crossing the street will not only set your other half at ease, but may be a confidence bridge for you so you are not looking around in a furtive and worried way when amongst fully dressed people.  Then find a spot on the beach, peal the shorts and lay down.  In the first 60 seconds you may hear a nearby tourist saying to their friend, "Look a man in a thong" but the novelty will quickly wear off and their attention will return to watching and commenting on the passers by.

If you are worred about being hassled you may decide to deliberately setup near and within the lifeguards vision.  The lifeguard will not say anything about your suit and everyone else, seeing the lifeguard has no problem with you will probably ignore you too.  People often look to authority to see how they should react.

Hey, JM, thanks for the excellent feedback.  I want my wife to know I'm an okay guy, willing to dress appropriately to make her feel comfortable, to say nothing of making her proud of her man (I'm a bit distinguished looking, and like yourself, could deliver passersby a hearty greeting with a British clip, with Indian overtones the product of my Peace Corps days on the sub-continent).   But she knows I'm not shy, like always the lone thonger in Bermuda by the pool and at the beach, so I think she'll accept my thonging if there's a dose of speedo or squarecut thrown in now and then.  I'll take one along, since it appears the ones I own are better than any I'm likely to find.  Your lifeguard trick is right on, I'll likely use it.  I do that at Calf Pasture Beach in CT each July, stringing for the day after the triathlon I've just raced in.  The lifeguards accept it, so everyone else does, too.

Today I was running down the beach as normal, when the most gorgous apperation appeared in front of me.  A hundred yards ahead there was a women running, in a thong, going the same way I was.  I see a lot of women in swimsuits, and even a lot of women in thongs, but this one was incredible.  I have rearly seen such a good body for a thong and she was running strongly too, which animates the vision in a most delightful way.

Figured it was a good idea to picked up the pace.  Glad to see I was now gaining on her.  I wondered where she come from, thinking  "Has she been ahead of me for some time and I only just notice it now?"

I was looking forward to drawing abreast of her and starting a conversation.  To my utter disappointment she stopped running and turned around.  Now she was running towards me.

I think this was the first time she saw me.  Her face lit up, I gave her a thumbs up, she waved.  We then exchanged good morning greetings, which were all to brief as we were running in opposite directions.

I almost turned around to follow but thought that a little Pavlovian.  Glancing back I noticed she stopped running not far up the beach, where she obviously had her stuff.  I guess she only ran a couple of hundred yards each way. I wondered if she had deliberately run that section in front of me just to inspire me.  If so it worked.  She lit up my morning run.  I hope she becomes a regular in the mornings.

I also wondered if she was one of the people I often say good morning to on my runs.  While you might assume that a man would remember each and every stunning young women he passes this ain't so.  I pass and say good morning to so many, and quite a large number are cute young women and quite a number of those in thongs, so  I don't remember them individually...  Unless they are allways in the same space or have some other unique atribute that makes them memorable, like being a fellow thong runner !

Ran on Ft Lauderdale beach last Wednesday, March 2nd, in my black Muscleskins thong, from South Park down to the breachway, up to Las Olas, and back to my starting point.  After a swim and shower up by the promenade at Las Olas, I discovered the better packed sand there that JM runs on, finally got a good stride going.  With JM's good example, I knew my attire was appropriate and I felt very comfortable, but missed the pretty chicks he noted above.  Must have been too early for them.  A few folks responded to my 'good morning' greetings, but the early birds seem a more dour lot than those JM encounters.  Short stay, on to Key West, no time for sunning on the beach, would love to have broken out the thong or string mid-day.  Next time.
