Sounds as though you are having a nice trip!!!  Sure not missing anything up here in New England....Connecticut is under a major flood warning today.  Enjoy the keys...they are fun.

We're back as of Wednesday noon, thankfully not among those many with flooded basements.  We loved the Keys, will surely return.  Checked out North Beach Park in Hollywood Tuesday evening, but too late, windy, and rough to go in, but I can see its potential, like RI's East Beach, as you say.  I'm sure my wife would enjoy the scene there more than Ft Lauderdale, and DeSoto Inn looks like a great choice.  If I spend time there alone, as you have (wife much less a beach nut than me), I may inquire where you stay to save a few bucks.  I'd love it -- time at North Beach, time at Ft Lauderdale, time at SoBe, and of course time at Haulover, which didn't work out this trip, alas.  We'll probably return to Sanibel, too.  Nice atmosphere.

Glad you had a nice trip!  I always do Hollywood North Beach in January...I have the time then and the flights are cheap along with the fact that it is quiet.  In the past 6 years, only one (last year) has been cold and not good beach weather...otherwise it has consistently been 75-80 and beautiful.  Just let me know if and when you want some info on lodging.

So long as your koala is not transparent or a 3D push out look at me thong, I suspect you will get mostly positive reaction. There is always a chance of some red-necks with loud opinions but hopefully you will not run into them.  If you do just ignore them and go for a swim.

Will run in the morning before it gets too hot.  Probably long gone by the time you lot get there.

Had a good day on the beach. Had lunch at the Oasis and hit the beach there in front of it just down from the Hobie area. BTW, not a great restaurant just great location. Decided not on my koala mesh but an older thong I have had a whlile, its a safer one. No rude or loud opinions and I think some tourist were taking pictures of me. I was laying getting sun on my buns and turned around to 2 ladies with an I phone pointed my way. They should have just asked an I would have taken a picture with them.

BTW, I'm a runner as well we should try one some morning together.

See ya.

Hey JM are there any good stores in Ft. Laud or Ft. Laud beach to buy men's thongs? I am going to be there at the end of next week for a couple of days before going to the keys and want to get some new tiny thongs or G's. Thanks!

microtman - For stores that sell thongs in or around Fort Lauderdale see post number 17 on the first page of this thread.  I don't frequent the beach stores so don't know if any have thongs worth going to see, I suspect not.  Most currently run by the Israely mafia and only sell overpriced tacky tourist junk.  Best try some of the stores in Wilton Manors.

I have purchased thongs at the Wings store in north Fort Lauderdale.  They have always had a few to pick from when I have been in.  There is one store on A1A, just north of Oakland Park Blvd.  Another is on Collins Ave just north of Haulover Beach.

Had an afternoon meeting in Ft. Lauderdale so I stopped by the beach for the late morning and early afternoon. I wore a TXM teardrop suit that just covers (I will post some picts on my Flickr site - bmicro2000 shortly). Laid out across from the fire station and found the highest proportion of topless women I have ever seen. Four out of the six females near me were topless. I found that JM is correct, the women who go topless tend to go out late morning, very different from South Beach.
I walked south to the inlet and, on my way back, discovered the outside bar at the Marriott and had a drink (diet coke). I was told that, in order to get food, I would have to go the the Sea Level restaurant and bar up by the pool. I walked through the pool area to the restaurant and asked if I could eat at the outside bar. The hostess told me to go ahead. I had a great lunch and enjoyed sitting there in my small g-string. I then walked back to where I was set up and noticed that, by this time, the topless ladies had left. I took a shower, put on my suit and tie and went to my meeting. A thoroughly enjoyable day!

What part of the beach are you going to? I've only seen a few thongers on the beach here since I moved out 5 weeks ago... I've been laying out a few blocks north of Sunrise. I feel very comfortable wearing a thong there. It would be nice to have more thong wearers around though...

I typically go to the section across from Bahia Mar. I haven't seen a lot of other thongers either.

Re:Fort Lauderdale, Florida ( Ft Lauderdale Beach ) FL

Date Posted:06/08/2011 01:10:38Copy HTML

The parking lot accross from Bahia Mar has BBQ grills, picnic tables, several elaborate kids climbing frames, swings and is the only part of the beach to have a public bathroom. Therefore it tends to be dominated by the red-neck BBQ picnic and and family brigade.  Just to the north has a basket ball court where mainly show off young punks strut their stuff.  Generally I would not expect to see topless women or many thongs directly across from the Bahia Mar Marina or around the basket ball court.

Going north, past the sailboat and kite surfer launching, you will find a cleaner and less populated beach, even though it is along the main road.  I thong there and others do too, sometimes topless women, but not common. Good place because the life guards are friendly, there are fresh water showers, palm trees if you need shade, and coffee shops and stuff accross the road if you need food, drink or bathrooms.
If you go the other way, south of the parking lot that is across from Bahia Mar, you pass the Yankee Clipper and again the beach gets quieter. To the south there is a lot less people, no life guards, but less shade and no fresh water showers, except on the end walls of the Clipper and the Ponts of Americas to the very south by the port.

The more common place to see topless women on my early morning runs seems to be further up the beach, across from the hotels and guest houses that cater to the Europeans, or above sunrise where the older French Canadians sit during the winter months.

Thongers can be anywhere on the beach, but mostly avoid the family BBQ and picnic zone, any place the beach is crowded by three rows of sun beds, and on weekends the the intoxicated directly across from the cheep bars.
Men in thongs are probably more common around lifeguard stand #5, or a mile north of that across from bonnet house a little south of Sunrise, where there are low grassy dunes between the road and the beach. Then again north of sunrise where there are grass dunes, and again at about 19th Street north, just south of where the beach disappears behind the buildings.
Women thongers can be absolutly anywhere, and often are.  More commonly between lifeguard station #4 and #7 if they are locals,  tourists maybe #8 to #9 or  #10 to #12, locals across from Bonnet House or anywhere where their are the grass dunes between the road and the beach.

Do you do most of your running on the sand or on the sidewalk?  I ask because I'm staying in the Best Western at the south end of Fort Lauderdale this week.  I have done some running on the sand, but end up walking a lot, or else moving over to the sidewalk to run.  On Monday, I took off with no watch and made it all the way to the south end of the beach on the Galt ocean mile, where I decided to turn around and barely made it back to the hotel in time for breakfast.  I did a lot of walking.  Because the beach is so steep, I thought the tide was almost high when I was running, but from looking at the charts, it was much closer to low.  Unlike Daytona, there are no bicycle riders creeping up behind me on the beach.  The thing I encountered most was the beach cleaning machine.  Somehow, I crossed paths with it about 6 times.  It appears to operate like a lawn mower, so when I was running along the water's edge and it was doing the same, I ran up the beach to get out of the way.  When it was already one or more lane widths away from the water, I just maintain my course.

I run barefoot on the sand, along the top where it is level, but not down by the water.  I can't do it in shoes, the surface is far to uneven for that.

If you did Best Western by the clipper, to the south end of Galt Ocean Mile, (Oakland Blvd) you did more than 8 miles.  That's a long way on sand.  Very good, no wonder you almost missed breakfast. I have been lazy of late and do not go that far.

The beach rakes spend the early morning raking seaweed along the water line, so if you were running along the waters edge, trying to find the sweet spot of harder wet sand, you get to see them quite a bit.

I would have run this morning, but did not because I worked till 5amand was therefore sleeping.  Probably back out running Friday morning.

On Friday I went out for my run a little late, it was the day to put out bulk trash so I did that first.  Did not arrive till about 9.  Where I start, lifeguard stand 5, there was a host of tents and tables on the beach. The pack of swimmer types milling around told me something was up. It turned out to be the national 10K open water championship, precursor to both the worlds and spots on the Olympic team.  I took off for my run so did not see the start. As I was running back to the South the swimmers were coming North in the sea,  shadowed by supporters on the beach.  The wind was strong, the tide was low, the course, 4 loops, all along the surf line.  I ended up watching then helping with the finish.  Several swimmers doped out because of the rough conditions.
The 10K open water championships were in Ft Myers last year but had moved here after the problems with the gulf water being too warm and the death of Fran Crippen from heat exhaustion in an open water swim in the Mid East. They thaught Fort Lauderdale would be cooler water.  It was cooler, but way to rough.  The feeding boat was anchored sideways to the wind, close to the beach, in only about 12' of water, so it was rocking violently in the surf. Another problem was the organizers did not know how to anchor the boys and finish line correctly: Cement in buckets are not anchors and don't weight much underwater.
I ended up helping at the finish line, so stayed on the beach longer than planned and got a little sun burned. The conditions were such that the intermediary marks had been changed for small floats instead of the bigger red markers, and the small floats were not viable in the breaking waves, so at least one women ran into one of the men head on.  This should never happen, the coming and going should be separated by a couple of hundred feet.  After most of the men had finished (they had a head start) and the top women were home, they canceled, pulling the rest of the elite swimmers of the course. It was that rough.
There will be another open water race on Sunday.  I think it will be the same course but only 2 laps. Hopefully conditions will be better.
Not much of a thong posting, although I was wearing a thong, but on that note, I noticed quite a few of the younger elite men were wearing short skin tight jammers cut very very low, ian thorpe style. Good thing the high tech full body suits were outlawed, but I still see quite a few of the swimmers in shorties. In a race where over heating is a consideration you would have thought less was better.

JM:  I drove back home to TN late last night, but did get a chance to run about 6 miles on the beach on Friday morning starting about 7:15 from the Best Western just as the sun came out.  At the time I started running, the swim event was just getting set up and starting.  There were not many people out when I was running.  On my way back through the reputed gay section of beach, I did notice one guy laying out alone pull out a camera with a telephoto lense attached.  Because of the difficult conditions for running, I did an alternating 1 minute then walk 1 minute run approach most of the time.  When I passed him, I was walking and neither looked back, nor made an effort to speed up.  He had plenty of time to get a full frame, no-face shot and that doesn't concern me at all.  I ran a fairly wide path around most people I encountered and the only ones who gave me any flack were about 3 or 4 of the guys standing around the swim event start around 8:15, and then some random guy whistling early in the run.  On my return trip, I did a quick look back suspecting a guy might be following closely, but was quite surprised to see a young woman I'd previously crossed paths with.  I lost sight of her several minutes after passing the camera guy and looking back after I was out of his range.  While running, I only noticed one person, a woman, wearing a thong.

While starting the drive home several hours later, I noticed a much more packed beach with several women, but no men wearing thongs.  The weather looked fairly nice and I hated to leave.  One thought that enters my mind with all the attention that guys in thongs seem to attract is why some of the local business don't utilize it.  Planes fly by with banners, and nobody pays too much attention.  But send out a reasonably fit man or woman in a thong to promote your product, and people will take notice.  Ironically enough, if businesses adopted such a strategy, the thong would lose a great deal of its current shock value that seems to exist in the minds of those under 30 years old.

XChip - yep, that's about the size of it.  After my run and stretch I put on my running singlet which came down to cover the top of my buns, but not shorts.  But I don't take shorts to the beach so ended up spending the rest of the morning helping in a thong.  Had a good conversation with one of the seniour officials who also does judging and officiating at some of the local triathlons.

When they tried to deploy the floating finish line it quickly got out of control, dragged it's weights and moving South in the surf.  The timing crew had a video setup with hand held cameras used to backup the race officials who are recording the finishers as they come across the line. This would be a third backup system since the floating line has a chip detection system. The video cams were cabled back to the timing tent. I ended up holding up the cable between the tent and the girl who was trying to hold the camera steady in the surf. Trying to make sure the people in the surf did not pull so hard on the cable that it pulled the timing tent down and the computers off the table. Trying to make sure we did not wipe out or trip up any of the spectators on shore. I was lucky in that I was in knee height water with waives only coming up to my waist, others who were deeper in the surf where having to leap to keep their heads and their stuff above the water.

No one said anything about my thong. At first I was standing and talking with some of the locals I know, locals who are accustomed to seeing me in a thong.  Some of the visitors did a double take, but after the first look they went back to being intrested in the event or talking with friends. Later on, when helping out, I did not hear anyone say anything about it. I was not watching them, more watching the video cable we were handling, the race, the finish, or the guys struggling in the surf to keep the finish line in place.

Next job today is to wright an email to two of the chaps about using anchors instead of concrete in buckets. The timing guy and the race official gave me their emails.

Followup:  Went out and watched/helped with the 5K open water on Sunday.  Flat calm to soft breeze, perfect conditions. Due to the fact the weather was perfect, it was a weekend and it was the national 5K open water championship there were a lot more people on the beach and in the water.  The race went very well. I was in a thong as usual but with  long coolmax singlet on top, coming down to cover the top half of my butt.  Quite a few looks but no comments at all about the thong, except for the women who wanted a photo with me. I got a bit sunburned on shoulders and around the neck where singlet did not cover.

Only if you wish to serve hotdogs outside the court house, if you are not a food vendor selling hotdogs on public property then no problem.  I thong on Fort Lauderdale beach regularly, and say HI to the life guards, city parks staff and cops I know.  I even went running on the Fort Lauderdale beach with a retired cop, both of us in thongs, a couple of months ago.  (From the thongers weekend.)

Why you would believe someone on the internet, rather than people who live here, I don't know.  If you are back in the chat room ask them what county or city code bans thongs on our beach, I sure would  be amused to know.  After living here for 30 years, and being a regular beach thonger, not secretly but very openly, up and down the length of the beach, I can assure you the rumor is twaddle.  TWADDLE !

By the way, welcome to the board.  For a through backround on Thonging in Fort Lauderdale, I suggest reading all the prior posts in this thread too.  There is much information that will help you have an enjoyable stay.

I was at the Wallgreens at the intersection of Oakland Park Blvd and Andrews, so I popped into the 'Lace to Lust' store that is just to the East on Oakland Park Blvd.  It is packed and well orgnized. There are two racks of thongs and shorts for men. Most of the thongs were more conservative and cut for the well endowed.
On the other hand, there were bins and bins of small cute bright thongs for women ranging from about $8 to $14. Small thongs but not transparent and sutable for swimming or the beach.  If you are a women in Fort Lauderdale I suggest you check out their selection.  There were women thongs that I thought, "If that were a little larger and cut for a man I would buy it in a heart beat."

Edit:  Across the street from Lace to Lust is another exotic clothing store catering to women. It is called "Sexy City".  They only sell swimsuits for women, and normally only let women in the store.  (Had some past trouble with strange men).  If you are looking for women's thongs and swimsuits you must check this little store out. They have some suits and styles that I have never seen any where else, very cute and very hot.  They make their own stuff and the prices are VERY reasonable.  Sorry no men's thongs but lots of thongs, suspender thongs, Brazil backs or boy cuts.  They tell me they cater to a younger crowed than Lace to Lust.  There were some stunningly hot suits at low prices.  I promises you, you will see cute suits that you have not seen any where else. I strongly suggest any women thongers from Dade, Broward or Palm Beach check out this little store. If they don't have what you want in your size they may well be able to make one up for you.  They keep the door locked, so if the sign on the door says they are open just knock.  There is a backup phone number if someone does not answer.  Sexy City - 60 East Oakland Park Blvd, Wilton Manors, NE Fort Lauderdale. (786) 300-5595.  They don't have an online site for swimsuits but do for their other line of business, shoes.

I was out on Ft. Lauderdale beach yesterday across from the Bonnet house.  Saw 2 women in thongs.  One was walking up and down the beach.  I was standing just in the water and I noticed she hadn't walked by yet.  When I turned around she just happened to be stopped right behind me fixing her hair.  I was in my skinny side skinzwear thong.  She must have liked the view :)  She was extremely attractive and in a very cute white thong.  Wish she would have stayed longer.

Fort Lauderdale is in Broward County.  B-Cycle is a new bicycle share/rental program.  You can join for a day, week, or get an annual pass.  You can pick up a bike at any B-Cycle location and drop it off at any other.  They come with baskets so you can carry your beach gear or go grocery shopping.

There are six B-Cycle locations near the beach, three of which are right at locations commonly mentioned on this board.  DC Alexander Park location is better known as the Swimming Haul of Fame (Life guard station 5), my home bit of beach.  Sebastian Lot is of course directly across from the Gay section of the beach. Willingham Park at 2086 is two blocks north of 18th where some thongers hang out.  Don't ask for the park names since NO ONE will know them by name, just go to the address or locations shown on the map.

Check out the website which tells you more about the bike share/rental deal and maps all the pickup and drop off locations.

Bike is the preferred method of transport for locals going to the beach, or getting around on the beach side of town.

Here you can ride on the sidewalks, just be polite to the pedestrians. I strongly recommend visitors scope out the beach by bike, and on at least one day cycle up Las Olas Blvd into down town.

The only draw back is the cost.  They were selling one day membership for $5 but right now, on the web, they sell an annual yearly membership for $10.  Unfortunately the membership only gives you access to the system, there is also a charge for the first half hour, and then every hour after that.

For day or week members the first half hour is .50c but every additional 30 minutes is $3.  For yearly membership the first 30 minutes are FREE and the next $1, then the next $2 and the next $4.  They are obviously trying to encourage prompt return.

For some strange reason membership for a day is $5 but a year, via the web, is $10, and the annual membership has a much lower per-ride rate.  With an annual membership you can pickup a bike, ride a few miles to the next location and if you get there in less than 30 minutes there is no charge at all.

If you pickup at a location near your hotel and bike to the beach make sure to check the bike back in at a beach location as soon as you arrive to stop the clock.  If you pickup a bike and cycle to have coffee at the south end of the beach for coffee, check the bike in at the Swimming Hall of Fame location,  then check it out again for the return trip.  Just keep trips below 30 minutes to ride for free.

Obviously the annual membership makes the most sense.

Personally I think the hourly rates need to be explained better up front on the website, and should be lower so as to encourage more use.  I often see the B-Cycle bikes cruising up and down the beach, but also see racks at least half full of bikes not being used.  If better explained the ridership would increase.

Here is a link to a PDF explaining the program and rates http://broward.bcycle.com/Portals/9/broward-brochure-lowres.pdf

The PDF says annual membership is $45 but the website says the current rate is $10.  At that rate I think anyone coming should sign up for and annual membership before they come. Then when they arrive do a lot of short rides, under 30 minutes, so there is no per-ride charge.

I promise you, biking up and down the beach is way way less effort and far cooler than stomping up and down the sidewalk.

Enjoyed the beach around Sunrise and A1A yesterday and today in my thong.  2 cute girls were snapping photos of me.  Wish they would have came up and asked for some photos.  I would have gladly let them take plenty of closeups!

BeachLover - Next time go over and ask if they would like a picture of the two of them together.  I often see tourists taking alternating pictures of each other, "You pose by the sign and I will take the picture, then I will pose by the sign and you take the picture" sort of stuff.  I make it a point to be friendly and walk over to offer taking a picture of them together as a group.  I do this if they are cute girls or old maids, or just a family on vacation:  Everyone deserves a good group photo.  -  It also Breaks the ice.

Funny thing is, often it is my offering to take pictures of others that gets a women to come over and talk to me. She sees me going out of my way to be kind to others and so decides to get to know me. What you do for others is often more telling than any pickup line you could invent.

Man, JM, that's fabulous advice.  A great way to show folks that we thongers are human.  I try to do it all the time, never mind the place or what we're all wearing.  As you say, it's simply kind behavior, and what goes around comes around.

The old knees are giving out and I may have to walk Bay-to-Breakers 12k foot race in San Francisco next year.  Even if I'm naked and camera-shy myself, I'll still do my best to help others get great shots to remember their crazy day.  After all, nakies are human, too, and what better way to show it?

In Ft Lauderdale at the Sebastian Street and N 18th areas, would a g string be OK or just thongs? I have some really low, very skimpy semi square cuts that make thongs look "large" and are see through when wet, would those be OK in quieter, uncrowded areas? Thanks for any help.

Hey, just wondering, are there any brick and mortar stores anywhere in SFla that have men's thongs, bikinis etc?

alee01 - I have worn g-string's up and down the beach without a problem.  You may have some red-neck make a rude comment, but they will make the same comment thong or g-string.  Generally thongs and g-strings are not that common but are well accepted.

alee01 - There are brick and mortar stores that sell thongs.  For mens thongs they tend to be gay leaning stores, you can find thong in some of the stores on the main drag in Wilton Manors.  Also gay stores like the Pride Factory 850 Northeast 13th Street.

Fort Lauderdale is mostly thong and g-string friendly. No problems from life guards or police if you act normal and wear something that is not transparent. I was wearing a thong today, and said hello to a number of life guards and police.

Today was 4th of July. At around mid day I ran three miles on the beach.  It was packed with people, umbrellas, chairs and even a good number of tents put up by people settling for the 4th of July events.  Orchestra was playing while people strolled by in swim suits.  I wore a red white and blue thong with a large stainless ring which connects all the straps at the back. One girl said, while looking at my patriotic colored thong "America, hell yes!"

I had one guy say "put some shorts on"  but otherwise the thousands of people did not care or were mostly positive. Got lots of smiles, good mornings, thumbs up, some raucous cheers.  There were a few disproving looks and a few kids snickered, still the positive response far outweighed the negative. Even if it did not I would still be happy, because I don't really care what ignorant people think. I was stopped by a two cute 17 year old girls I know, who introduced me to their girl fiends.  Later I voluntered to take some pictures for a group so they could all be in the picture. All in all a good day at the beach, even though it was packed for 4th of July weekend and one of the official read-neck days.

Good beach run in a good looking g-string style thong. Lots of smiling hellos, good mornings and other positive feedback. Some groups of runners on the sidewalk waved and smiled. The life guards waved or said good morning as I passed. One never says 'good morning' but bellows 'yes sir' as if he were responding to a Sargent Major, before giving me a big smile and a thumbs up.

On the return leg I was stopped by a man who said I was one of the reasons he moved to Fort Lauderdale. He had previously visited and said he saw me running in a thong and thought "That must be freedom", so he moved here !

After running I volunteered to take a picture for a couple of women who were taking pictures with the Fort Lauderdale sign that is planted in the beach. Then again for a second couple.  After I had taken their picture the young women from New Zealand asked me to pose with her. (I hope she emails me a copy of that picture).

When bicycling home I had to wait for the bridge and got talking to a fit and cheerful Canadian women who was out running. While waiting for the bridge we talked about the Olympics and in parting told me I had cute buns.  A good day at the beach and lots of inspiring positive feedback.

Great day for you, J.M.!   I have to tell you that many years ago, I too saw you running on the beach.   In fact, two years in a row I saw you there before I knew who you were or knew anything about this board.   After seeing you, I knew it was OK for me to wear my thong on Fort Lauderdale Beach.......and I did!!!  You're the man!  Thank you!

During our summer it is winter south of the equator, so August sees many South Americans coming to Fort Lauderdale.  Today I met women from Uruguay and Argentina.  The people I met Friday were from Brazil.

As a general rule the South American women are  thinner than Americans and often sport thongs or skimpy swimsuits. Then again, it is the rich from those countries who can afford winter vacations in the US, and as a general rule the women of the rich tend to be more slender and elegant than the general population.

Either way, August brings a general up-tick in slender sexy women in thongs.

I saw 8 women in thongs today by the SE 5th street life guard tower.  I wore my thong with no problem.  Felt great and loved the company of other thongers.

( SE 5th street is South of Las Olas, across from the Swimming Hall of Fame, Life Guard tower #5 )
