This looks like an attractive destination, albeit one with very little in the way of making things easy for the non-french speakers.  As far as I can tell there are two clothing optional beaches, Anse Tillet on Basse-Terre and Anse Tarare on Grande-Terre.  Could anyone comment on the prevalence of thongs/toplessness on the other beaches and any experiences they had on the island? Would be great to find an island in the Caribbean that, unlike St. Martin, has something to do other than sit around and drink.  Guadeloupe has a huge national park with hikes to waterfalls and up inactive volcanoes.  It sounds much better for the fit and active.

Guadeloupe is a great place. I went to Anse Tarare, but didn't see any thong wearers. I also went to couple of other beaches. There are speedos, but didn't see any thongs.

Did you wear a thong at the other beaches?  If so, did people react at all?

No, I didn't thong at all. I was in speedo all the time.I just recall I went to Anse Tillet as well, but I also didn't see any thongers there. Unlike Anse Tarare, Anse Tillet is a real beach with sand.

I will report this is an excellent destination as an alternative to St. Martin.  Minimal swimwear was acceptable on all beaches and we loved that there was an abundance of hiking in the parc de national, some leading to waterfalls flowing into beautiful natural rainforest swimming holes.  The roads are very well marked and there is a great system of highways.  The only thing is don't expect locals to speak much if any english.
