Date Posted:01/25/2005 03:04:08Copy HTML Thinking of going to Kenya - Diani Beach area later this year. Has anyone any information on thonging out there at all. My partner has several thong bikini (no wish to g topless) and we both have a couple of G string bottoms (mine are the HOM Uni Froisse so fairly discrete frontal coverage). I also have a number of more discrete thongs from Kiniki, HOM and Speedo.Just really trying to see what might be acceptable! We've thonged in the Maldives and Egypt in the past.

Re:Kenya Date Posted:01/26/2005 12:39:26Copy HTML Impish I went to Kenya (Nyali Beach) about 8 years back - it is fairly conservative when it comes to swimwear, and this is what the guide books said when I looked up dress codes before we went. There is no topless bathing at the main resorts as far as I am aware, and I saw no thongs/g strings anywhere on the beaches or by the hotel pools. I wore speedos with about one inch sides, or occasionally Intersparta Tridents (string side bikini, but with reasonable rear coverage) and was the most briefly attired male by far on the whole trip. My GF wore some bikinis from Skinz, but always wore the tops and she did not venture out in any thong bottom designs. I have heard that things may be a bit more relaxed on the off shore islands such as Lamu, and I do not know about Diani Beach. Sorry if I am not very encouraging -we went mainly for a safari holiday rather than serious sunning -the few days at the beach were just a bonus part of the package. Pete |

Re:Kenya Date Posted:01/26/2005 02:55:11Copy HTML Impish We were on Diani beach about 10 years ago. Women in thongs weren't uncommon and, apart from me, there were a couple of other blokes as well - no-one seemed to mind about either - the odd comment, but nothing derogatory. Toplessness though was different - Meg didn't feel comfortable going topless there - nobody actually told her to put her top on, but after the first day of disapproving looks from the local staff she decided not to push it. Some Dutch ladies had similar experiences - so it's good that your wife doesn't mind whether or not she goes topless. Enjoy the safaris - they'll be the best part of your holiday. The beach at Diani is lovely but you're limited ( for safety reasons ) to what you can do outside the hotel - it's not a place to be wandering round at night. Bernie

Re:Kenya Date Posted:12/01/2005 04:26:39Copy HTML Has anyone got any up to date info on Kenya? Impish - did you go? I am staying there early next year and emailed the hotel to ask if thong swimwear was OK, but they didn't understand what a thong was unfortunately! LF1 |

Re:Kenya Date Posted:04/06/2006 08:31:50Copy HTML Just a quick note to say that I think thonging is fine for women and would probably ok for men too. I saw just 3 women in thongs but no-one reacted to them. The majority of guests were German, Dutch and French, and I personally find that these nationalities are less likely to be bothered than the British. I didn't thong in the end which is explained in Personal Experience - "Thonging in front of new friends". Generally though, if you are after a beach holiday, then don't bother going, as the beach sellers pester you and the hotel don't even bother to put sun loungers on the beach. If you are happy with pool holidays then I'm sure you'll love it. And the safari is absolutely amazing - I can recommend that without any doubt. |

Re:Kenya Date Posted:05/01/2010 10:53:17Copy HTML I'm just back from Kenya, where I spent quite a long time on the coast. As previously, I wore a thong under my wetsuit, making it a Kiniki Wave rather than a more conservative one from Sunup/Sundown as last time. Whereas last time, my open thonging was restricted to Watamu beach at the evening - snorkelling and catching the last of the sun in my Sunup/Sundown V-string, on this occasion I went for a morning swim off Wasini Island in the extreme south wearing nothing apart from my brand-new Skinzwear swim string. It was remarked upon by the locals, particularly as I was the only tourist on the island at that time, but there were no problems. I didn't walk around the village, but neither did I attempt to conceal myself in it.
(I do have some photos, but was having difficulty posting them). |

Re:Kenya Date Posted:01/12/2025 02:16:04Copy HTML Right after new years my husband and I were fortunate enough to visit Watamu with some friends, a straight ex-pat couple, who live in Nairobi. We rented a place called Beach House, a fantastic swahili-style open air mini-mansion right on the coast, with a pool and a private path in the backyard that led to the ocean. These kinds of places are usually staffed with security, housekeeping, and a chef. My friends know I wear thong swimsuits and are super supportive of it but I'll admit I was a little nervous the staff would be judgemental or disapproving, not to mention that being openly gay is technically illegal in Kenya. After arriving at the place and being introduced to the staff, however, it was quickly apparent that their only concern was that we had a great time.
Over our three night stay I basically only wore thongs in the house, in the pool, and walking the beach. I brought a pink desmitt, green orojuco, and a yellow patterned thong from amazon. I also brought a blue jockmale bodysuit but only wore that at night in the pool to avoid conflicting tanlines. I received no comments from the staff other than their repeated insistence we have a good time and to please come back when saying goodbye on the last day. My friend who lives there did a lot of the actual interaction with the staff like coordinating meals and rides into town, etc, but I still received a lot of smiles and "Karibu." I should also say the chef, Evelyn, cooked amazing seafood dishes.
We went slightly after high season but the beach by our place was almost entirely empty, mostly just a few beach walkers (several women in thongs and men in speedos... almost no board shorts at all!). We didn't really even get close enough to anyone to wish them a good morning or say hello. The beach itself was gorgeous with fine white sand and warm water. It was nearly impossible to stay in the sun for very long because it was so hot, but we spent a lot of time relaxing in the ocean and pool.
The friendly staff and near-deserted beach made this an amazing thonging destination that I couldn't recommend more. |
