I'm going to be studying abroad this summer at the University of Westminster in London. Where, from there, would be the best/closest for thong wearing?

Judging by the FL in your nick, you are from Florida? I hope you do not expect the same sort of weather in Britain as you have at home!

Brighton is the closest seaside resort to London and therefore the main one for Londoners for a day-trip. i doubt if there are any specifically thong-friendly beaches and even if there are, you will not necessarily meet even one other thonger there on the day you go - there just aren't that many. Best check out the scene when you get there. But you can still have a good day at the beach even on your own.

A bit closer to London is the village of Thong and there is a leisure centre nearby where you can swim. Check it out and give us a full report when you are in London!

ThongFL20,

Unfortunately the UK does not get great weather. The days that you can go to a beach in a thong are very few and far between indeed. And to be honest I would not personally thong on a UK beach. Not because I don't have the courage I thong whenever I can. But because some UK beaches have a reputation for being less than clean. Hence why we all go to the Med for our holidays lol. If I was in your position I would try and thong in hotel pools.

This is the third year running that I have thonged in Battersea Park in London.

Enter the park from Prince of Wales Drive, opposite Beechmore Road, and turn right after the short run of railings.  There's a little-used pathway through the grass.  On the left of that pathway is undulating grass that isn't overlooked by any of the main concrete paths through the park.  People sunbathe on this area of grass, usually singly, and well spaced apart.  I started in 2003 in fairly modest thongs and ended that summer, without any adverse reaction, in my Dore very-low-cut thongs which I carried on wearing last year and have continued to wear this year.

There are a number of reports on the net that say that Brockwell Lido (Sydenham/Dulwich) is thong friendly. Anyone with any personal experience ?

I agree with Ryan Booth, the UK's weathers not that great for going to the beach and if you do get the weather then the beaches aren't that clean. You could try looking on the net to see what pools offer a nude or thong evening or even looking up nude beaches for Britain on the net, although they are nude beaches I'm sure you would be allowed to wear a thong and also they should be a bit cleaner than normal beaches as they are private beaches and should be looked after better than standard.

Good luck

On Hampstead Heath at the moment there are a number of areas where they haven't cut the grass and I find that this is a good place to sunbathe in a thong - particularly the South End Green end of the heath.  On one occasion I even managed to sunbathe nude there (and I wasn't the only one!)

Just to say that the area in Battersea Park described in my previous post on this thread (4 up) is still fine for thonging, today I wore a Joe Snyder Capri, but I'm comfortable there in my Dore Low Cut thongs when the mood takes me.

Again this year there is a lot of high grass up in Hampstead on the West Heath .  I regularly thong here and I've also seen guys sunbathing naked.  Clientele mainly gay so have had no problems.

I was in Hyde Park today, between Lancaster Gate, the Serpentine and the road that crosses the park. There were 4 or 5 men sunbedding in thongs, two extremelly handsome. I was very surprised...this is were people that buy thongs show them off!!! The grass is very tall at the moment and you can really wear what you want.
Does anyone have experience and know other places in London parks where thongs are warn?

A few years ago  you could find quite a few thong weares sunbathing on Parliment Hill Fields, on the grass aera  between Swains Lane and the Highgate mens swimming pond, I have not been back on hot days since 2002, so I dont know if it is used now, I was also told Primrose Hill was popular, but I have never been to see.

A couple of years ago I used to work in the Hyde Prk area and would nip across at lunchtime and after work to sunbathe. I wore a thong or g-string in an area of the park that seemed less looked after than most of the park i.e. the grass was quite long. Eventually I stopped wearing anything and experienced no problems over a period of 3 months in summer. I saw a couple of other guys wearing things and a few other nudists. Hopefully the area does not become too popular otherwise it will draw unwanted attention to thong wearers and nudists alike.

Hard to say in London, the only place I've ever thonged in my hometown is at my gym :(

Sadly we don't really get the weather for it.

I might have to make a trip down to Brighton and check the beach out though, I knew there was a nudist beach there, just not sure where abouts.

conincidently i've been looking at Rio's a few times this past month, been planning to go but haven't got round to it yet. I phoned them and the lady said that i would be allowed to wear a thong. It's a 'swimwear optional' spa, despite being advertised as naturist spa. So yeah you can pretty much wear what you want i think. There's some reviews of the place on the internet.

Now that my football season is over i may pop down one saturday, see if i can get some shopping done in camden (plenty of thongs there - big s&m scene in camden i think) then head for a swim / sauna. Just hope the place isn't seedy!

I would imagine that wearing a thong there would not be an issue whatsoever judging by their website.  Sounds like it can get pretty steamy there from a few reviews on the internet.

Not my thing I'm afraid.

Re:London UK - Parks / Pools / Sunbathing Areas

Date Posted:04/23/2009 04:10:21Copy HTML

OK I checked out Rio's the other day.

It is definately a seedy place no doubt about it, but read on.

I went there just as it opened to ensure less weirdos as possible. Seems like it gets "wild" in the evenings, judging from reviews on the internet. Although there were some strange people in there nobody really bothered me and most kept to themselves. A massive plus is that they have an opened area at the back so you can sunbathe no problem, which really is excellent.

2 big disadvantages though:

1. there are some people there who just stare (gawkers... sigh...)
2. The entry is £20 which is a silly amount i think...

I dread to think what happens in there in the evenings/nightime but I think that as long as you go in the morning/early afternoon it should be fine.

Was everyone in swimwear or nude?

Did you just sunbathe or have a massage there too?

Gawkers I can handle if it's just me, I tend to intimidate them just by staring straight back.  Don't like wierdos staring at my wife when she is sunbathing topless or thonging though.
Black_Gstring #22

Re:London UK - Parks / Pools / Sunbathing Areas

Date Posted:04/23/2009 10:33:20Copy HTML

I would say it was about 50/50 between swimwear and nude.

No I didn't have a massage.

If you get annoyed by people staring at your wife then I wouldn't recommend it since it's pretty clear some people go there for something a bit more than just using the jacuzzi... A single guy who minds his own business shouldn't have problems though.

 Hi again,

Yeah I thonged in the back garden. Overall I would give the place a 6/10. Im not really interested in their spa/jacuzzi/steam rooms, just an open place to thong. The back garden although small is an OK place. Nothing great though.

There really isnt a substitute for Studland beach in Dorset ;) Best place to thong EVER.

Can someone please tell about the nudist area in Hampstead Heath mens pond? Are thongs allowed or are you obliged to go nude? I only had a quick look on a rainy day, but is it just that small area on your left as you enter the area?

thanks
mark_issac #26

Re:London UK - Parks / Pools / Sunbathing Areas

Date Posted:04/27/2009 08:25:57Copy HTML

Yeah the mens pond is fine to wear a thong anywhere. As you go into the changing rooms theres an area to the left which is a nudist area. I think it might be for the gays, i avoid going in there!

I went to Rio's on Saturday when the weather was good. i agree with your comments, it's not a great spa but it is very relaxed and nobody said anything when they saw me in a thong. I did quite enjoy the outdoors bit and swimming in a thong's always good. I saw the most stunning brunette as well, i think she was one of the masseuses!

All in all it's not worth the £20 but once in a while some public thonging is always fun!

"and nobody said anything when they saw me in a thong."

haha that's kinda of funny because im sure the regulars in there have probably seen (and done) A LOT more hardcore stuff than see somebody in a thong! We are smallfry I'm sure.

Did you notice the "rest rooms" by the pool? There is definately more than just a nudist spa... But I think during the day it's fine.

Yeah totally agree with you on the price. £20 is way too much unless you gonna spend your whole day in there.

Yes, by the sounds of it, seeing someone in a thong there is unlikely to cause anyone to say anything.

Nice to have somewhere private in London to go to.  We're lucky enough to have a small garden at our house that gets a bit of sun. Jobs permitting, we're hoping to move out of the city to somewhere with a much bigger outdoor area though, still needs to be in commuting distance of central London though.

I wonder if anyone is going to try a bit of subtle/not too extreme thonging in the coming weeks. I am hoping that Brockwell Lido might return as a venue.

Re:London UK - Parks / Pools / Sunbathing Areas

Judging by my experience yesterday, Hyde Park is a good bet for sunbathing in a thong. My wife and I took a picnic. It was a nice hot day by UK standards at least and the banks of the Serpentine were packed with people picnicking and sunbathing - a few girls were in thongs (or near-as-dammit equivalents) but no guys that I saw.

Because the park is so big though you can quickly find more sparsely occupied (and most importantly spotless) areas of nicely tended grass where it still feels as if you're part of the action. The one we found was still in view of the Serpentine, quieter but by no means deserted (couples, small groups of students and the odd lone lady) and visible from one of the many paths. I enjoyed two delightful hours soaking up the rays in an orange Hom Trophee string (next to nothing at the back), and nobody batted an eyelid. People frequently stroll across that stretch of grass and by the time we left the area, it had more people in it and groups of nicely spoken students were chucking a frisbee around. Nobody indicated that they gave a damn what I was doing. As usual my wife is too modest to wear a bikini of any kind in the park but seems genuinely to approve of my being so blase :-))

I think there are two reasons why West London is good for this kind of thing. Firstly, the people mostly just don't think it's cool to mind what others are doing - and more power to you if you're discreet and confident in your manner. Secondly, there are so many nationalities in that part of London that nobody could really say for sure what is or isn't "normal"/acceptable/not acceptable any more. Oh, and maybe (just maybe) they think a sparser suit actually looks OK? Who knows.

I have an constantly fluctuating love-hate relationship with the city I live in but yesterday I was definitely appreciative. And unlike on Nice Plage last year I didn't burn my arse off...

That sounds wonderful. You are lucky to live in London on that score; it's probably the only city in the UK that you can wear whatever you like without overt judgements. If this weather continues it could be a good year for thongers.

Glad to hear about Hyde Park and the Serpentine for our next summertime London holiday, would make for a nice picnic lunch stop on our travels about the city.  Your attitudes and experience, Superchicken23, pretty much match mine at my favorite nearby beach on the Rhode Island coast -- I get there early, set up in the open, then spend a comfortable day with no hassles from the folks who come along later.

Is there an equally welcoming grassy area to lay out thonging at Hampstead Heath?  We usually stay at a nice B&B on Wildwood Road in the Garden City, across the street from the park.  It's great for running, and would be handy for some tanning if the atmosphere were similar to the Serpentine area.

SlidingG, I think there's a thread on this board that specifically mentions Hampstead Heath, and I think the answer to your question is yes. I haven't any experience of thong-wearing there myself, but if I were a betting man I'd say it was probably even easier than in Hyde Park.

Have fun in London.

Thanks for the tip, Superchicken23, I'll check out those posts.  I recall on our last London visit, as my wife and I were strolling around the heath, on a grassy hillside near one of the organized swimming ponds lots of people were sunning, a few in their underwear.  Probably an okay place to strip to my thong and just see how it goes.  Next to a natural pond where swimming was allowed would be ideal, of course, and I'd make sure my thong was a swimsuit, but I guess that's asking for too much.  London's a great city in so many ways, hope to get back soon.

Re:London UK - Parks / Pools / Sunbathing Areas

Hampstead Heath is absolutely fine for thonging, especially later in the summer when there is long grass. Even on some of the mown parts you may see the occasional other thonger. The same applies in Hyde Park. The main thing is just not to go OTT and avoid wearing something too extreme. Just behave naturally.

IMO open spaces like these are more viable than pools/lidos, most of which have become thong-unfriendlty - even if there was some acceptance in the past.

Given how few shops ever stock thongs it is hardly surprising that they dont get worn much in anywhere approaching mainstream locations - i.e. not remote beaches and back gardens.

 Argh,

I'm so annoyed at Rio's spa entry fee.

£20 is absurd.

I like the freedom in there and I enjoyed soaking up rays in my thong but that kind of entry fee is way too much for what it's worth...! I think the back garden is nice since it doesnt get windy and cold the way it's literally protected by surrounding buildings.

Argh!

Brockwell seems less thong friendly than Parliament Hill Fields (the Lido on Hampstead Heath). A visit there yesterday on a very hot day in London saw several thongs, mainly just sunbathers but a couple of young girls swimming/jumping in wearing thongs. Quite a few thongers put something elsove to swim/go to the cafe etc. I have no idea whether this thonging is genuone tollerance or just that is was so busy that the life guards had their hands full guarding the pool with so many people there.
