My wife and I were there in 2019 and thonged on every beach we went to. We were staying on the north side of the island so that's where we spent most of our time. Mont Choisy Beach quickly became our favorite. There were less families there and some of the best food we had on the entire islands (Kiosque Magique)! I also highly recommend taking one of the dolphin excursions where they take you out and let you swim with the dolphins in the wild! This was an AMAZING experience! They make a day out of it, swim with the dolphins, do some snorkeling, lunch at another smaller island... we did not thong this day but still loved every minute of it! A few other (non-thonging) recommendations... Rhumerie de Chamarel Restaurant & Rum Distillery: if you were near Houston I'd ask you to bring me a bottle! Casela Nature Parks: for the giant tortoise and to hear the lions roar! I wouldn't personally get in the cage with the lions and tigers but there are places that allow it... Le Morne Brabant Mountain: has a nice trail up the mountain with some nice views... take lots of water! It's a small island but not many roads going north to south so some days it could easily take 1 1/2 hours or more of you get bad traffic... this is why we spent most of our time on the north side. We loved Mauritius but Mont Choisy Beach/Kiosque Magique, the dolphins, and the rum are what makes us want to go back!

@GameOfThongs thank you for your comprehensive reply. I am glad that you thonged without any issues, so looking forward to wearing my swim thongs in Mauritius next month. We are staying on the east coast at Belle Mar. I will have a look at doing a dolphin excursion whilst we are there and also visiting Casela Nature Park.

I was there in 2022 and have thonged at most of the beaches also and never received any issue at all. Even did a fair bit of snorkling wearing my thong.

A bit late to this but I've been visiting here regularly. I initially started with aussie bum swim briefs and  several years ago at Belle Mare beach I believe with my wife and then toddler. Then about 5 years ago I started wearing swim thongs to the local pool and beach where I usually live.

When visited with family again last year (Dec '24 - Feb '25) I went to Cote d'Or National Sports Complex for a gym membership and I asked at the reception if thongs were ok... they weren't sure what I was talking about, or just maybe not sure and said to ask the pool attendant.

I'd gone with just a swim rio (half back) and went out to ask first and had to gesture what I was talking about. Like small back etc or thong which is like a strip. Took a minute or so. The guy then laughs and said it was ok, as long as your not naked. So I went and swam with my rio bikini and the next time around I went with my asos swim thong and only ever worn thongs going there. I also went to the beach (can't remember the name) and had a similar rio with the wife and in-laws (she said a thong wouldn't be appropriate with family :P). And then another time in Belle Mare with just the five and daughter, we went a bit off the main path to the beach, nearer the resorts and I worn my jor swim thong. Had only a few foreign tourists walk by, and all the women were wearing thongs. Stayed away from the more busier spots as it seemed to be just families and groups who tend to come out and have picnics fully clothed.

This year, 2026, I'm back again and I've gone back to the pool and have been wearing almost my full collection of thongs (even a very slim one). I will be heading out to a few beaches soon and definitely will be wearing a thong regardless of the time or how busy it is :)
