There has not been much thong (or nude) activity on the Bird this summer. I also talked to "the Mayor" and a few other regulars who also noticed the decline.  Parking @ 40th street is tighter, the construction of the new sewer system, the new bridge and the economy may all be contributing factors.
Come on back Lindros, we need more numbers!

Well, I just sold my house in South Carolina so I'm a Floridian for at least the next few years. There are many more options down here for thong/nude recreation, and the season is longer for that too.

With the decreased nude/thong use at the Bird, do the Brunswick police still show their presence each week?

Hi,  I know that at the public access area at Fort Macon at Atlantic Beach there is a area where guys go to lay out in speedos.    When you park at the bath house area,  you go to the left side of the beach from there and you will usually see guys laying out in the more secluded spots there.   Hope that helps.

Re:North Carolina Beaches & Outer Banks NC

I have worn a Brazilian bikini at the Fort Macon / Atlantic Beach public access one time last spring.  It was early spring and warm that day, but the air was still cool from the breeze blowing off the cooler water.  It was on a Friday when I was there and there were no other guys wearing bikinis that particular day.  I took my fishing rod and threw it a few times but nothing happening fish wise, so I laid out my towel dropped my shorts and laid in the sun for about an hour.

Actually was my first time in something other than board shorts in public.  Had a thong under the bikini but never got the nerve to strip down to the thong.  Was hoping for some bikini tan lines after an hour with my bottom up, but I guess it was too early in the year because I didn't get any sun.

To those that laugh at my challenges of wearing a bikini or thong in public must understand that in NC bikinis and thongs are really not accepted here in NC on most beaches.

There are some secluded beaches you can get away with it.  I can say for sure on the outer banks of NC you can wear a thong or the ladies can be topless for.  If you drive south on Hwy 12 there are many secluded places you can enjoy the beach in a thong.

I just have never been to these beaches during the summer tanning season.  When I go to the outer banks (OBX) in the spring or fall I am with my fishing buddies, catching (hopefully) fish. Needless to say, wearing a bikini or thong while fishing would not be appropriate.  The same can be said for just about the entire northern end of Ocracoke Island which is the first island south of Hatteras Island.

Went down to Bird Is. today for a few hours. Perfect weather and deserted beaches for the most part. Once the morning walkers did their thing, I had the beach to myself. Spent most of the day either nude or walking the beach in my g-string. I figure I'll enjoy it now before the summer textile crowds
converge on the place.

Re:North Carolina Beaches & Outer Banks NC

My lady and I recently took a week's vacation to Ocracoke Island. The weather could not have been more perfect, low to mid-80's all week with hardly a cloud in the sky (unlike this most recent week). I have to say the OI beaches are still my personal favorite for thonging - not because the beach is full of thongers but because the beach is so large yet there are relatively few people there at any given time, even on the most crowded day. And of those that are there, Park Rangers and lifeguards included, no one really bats an eye at those that are wearing thongs or g-strings.

We spent 6 days at the beach, visiting 2 different locations easily walkable from the parking lot and both wore a thong or g-string each day. From the car to the beach, I only wore a bikini brief as a cover-up. We are a bit discreet but not really. We are usually close enough to the water that passers-by see our skimpy wear and anyone on the beach sees us when we go for a swim and return to our seats. We often had people setup within 20 yards of us  - no issue. Several mornings, I even had the whole beach to myself going on a 4 and a 6 mile run in just a thong, shoes and socks.

For the first time ever, my wife even approved of me wearing just a g-string in public. Apparently my working out, eating healthy and getting leaner has opened her up to seeing me in a tiny suit regularly as well as letting me show off in front of strangers.

Like any beach, wearing just a thong at OI is easy - it's all about behaving, carrying yourself with confidence and not being a creep hiding in the sand dunes. Cheers.

I'm headed to Kill Devil Hills this weekend for a week-long vacation!  Can't wait!

I might make a daytrip to Ocracoke to thong there, but I'll probably scope out some beaches between Nags Head and the Hatteras Light so I'll have a much shorter drive.  I don't mind a few people around but I don't want to have 4WD vehicles zooming by all the time (that seems to happen on the better fishing beaches).

There is a place on Pea Is. about 2 miles north of Rodanthe that is thong friendly. You can park on the the grass off the shoulder of Rt. 12 without any problems. It is near mp.35. Usually you will find other cars parked there. Be sure to take bug spray, After you park, just follow the path across the dunes about a half mile to the beach. Enjoy the quiet, without the SUV's.

Re:North Carolina Beaches & Outer Banks NC

Ironiconpa -- A day trip from Kill Devil Hills to Ocracoke is usually a (whole) day trip.  Figure at least an hour and a half each way from KDH/.Nags Head to Hatteras village and then at least an hour for the ferry each way (assuming you get right on a ferry).  This means you will spend at least five hours in transist, and that assumes you are not in a "rush hour" at the ferry.  From about 9:00 until 1:00 or 2:00, going from Hatteras village to Okracoke can take an extra hour or more due to high volumes of traffic -- and you get stuck at the dock waiting for your boat with nothing to do, so bring a book or something to occupy the time.  Coming back, traffic gets bad about 4:00 and can be heavy until the last boat at around midnight.  We have had to wait here over two hours, and while there is a nearby beach, someone needs to move the car every time a ferry comes along, or you loose your place in line.  Remember there is a "last boat" usually around 11:00 or midnight.  If you are not in line when it gets there, you will not be able to get back until the next morning -- and motel rooms on Okracoke are often sold out.

Our solution -- Spend a night or two on Okracoke Island at one of the dozen or so motels or small hotels.  We usually do this on the last night or two of our vacation.  Our favorite is called the Sand Dollar Inn and they are one of only a few motels with a pool on Okracoke.  While it is a tiny pool, it is surprisingly quite and just as thong/topfree friendly as the beaches. We have spent many quite hours on the deck, enjoying iced drinks and sunning our buns, me topfree.  One of the good things about this small motel is that they have full cable TV with just about every non-adult movie and sports package, so if you get rained in for a half day or so, you won't get totally bored.  Bad weather comes frequently, but usually lasts only a few hours unless it is a huricaine, but remember that power comes all the way from Norfolk Virginia, and a lightning strike anyplace on the power wires between Virginia and Okracoke will cause some power outages which can last a couple of hours.  It is always a good idea to unplug computers and other sensitive electronic equipment when you leave for the day -- just in case a storm comes along and a lightning strike occurs near where you are staying (this is true anywhere on the Outer Banks).  Likewise, unplug when you see lightning, hear thunder, or see a storm on the weather channel coming your way.

An evening walk through town on the residential side streets (some very narrow and made of sand) can be very pleasant.  My sister Nikki has done this evening walk topfree and in a thong and nobody -- even the people at the ice-cream place -- said a thing negative.  But this is certainly not the norm for walking around town at night.  Usually there are very few bugs due to the almost constant wind, and many of the stores and shops stay open until late -- sometimes 11:00 or even later.  While you will see some beachwear on the streets in the day (and even the occasional thong swimsuit at the gas station or even in the grocery store), evenings are usually more traditional resort casual with shorts and t-shirts for most people.  There are some good restaurants (the Back Porch is especially good but slow and expensive) and Howard's Pub is a popular watering hole.  Several places have live music now and then too.

Remember -- Okracoke is in Hyde County -- not Dare County like everything from Hatteras to the Virgina state line.  They have different rules on alcohol and if you get into trouble, you will be hauled almost three hours away to the county seat at Sawn Quarter, NC.

NCThonger:  I spent a week last summer in Atlantic Beach wearing just my thong and had no problems.  It is cut fairly conservatively and the beach was never very; perhaps that helped.  This year I will be somewhere mid-island, but still intend to wear the thong full-time.  I'll let everyone know how it went when I get back.  All in all, I thought thongs were more accepted in NC than many other places up and down the coast.

There are places at Atlantic beach that aren't overly crowded some days.  Usually in the cottages sections.  You could probably get away with wearing a thong there.  I wish thongs and bikinis were more accepted in NC but the fact of the matter is NC & SC are very conservative and wearing skimpy stuff will get you weird looks and pictures on the internet that aren't welcome as far as I am concerned.

Good luck Davy, I spent all day this past Saturday at Atlantic Beach wearing only a Skinzwear g-string with no issue. The beach near the fort is where I prefer just north of the lifeguard section. There are plenty of beach goers walking by and scattered along the waveline and a park ranger rides by several times per day. No one bothered me. I went for a dip every hour. As I said about Ocracoke, Fort Fisher and elsewhere, it's all about behaving, carrying yourself with confidence and not being a creep hiding in the sand dunes. Being fit helps too because people are more accepting :) I don't pay people any attention so I have no idea if they made weird looks, don't really care.

Glad to hear the g-string was ok.  I have a g-string and a fairly conservative thong, and I only wore the thong last year.  Maybe this year I will try the g-string and see how it goes.

Can anyone tell if the weather is suitable for the beach in Late march to early april time frame,  I'm considering a trip to the OBX and wondering if I should pack a few thongs, if the temps are favorable.

Re:North Carolina Beaches & Outer Banks NC

My experience would say most likely not. If your trip takes you to OBX for other reasons that time of year, bring them just in case but don't count on it. Likely temps are in the 50's-60's but could be in 70's if you are lucky. Wind and overcast skies that time of year are to be expected.

Water temp in the spring usually makes the air temp chilly regardless what the air temp is.  You can certainly find plenty of places to wear your thongs if you get lucky on the weather.

Called a couple of different places in NC to make sure thong swimsuits were acceptable as we are thinking of going on a vacation in a about a month.  I called a couple of state parks and town halls and everyone I spoke with told me, "No," with the exception of Topsail Beach town hall.  The lady I spoke with literally stuttered when I asked her the question and asked me to repeat it.  "I'm sorry, I have just never had that question before.  I'm not sure - that would be a question for the police dept so hold on and let me ask."  When she came back on the line she told me they are permitted but they ask that we stay "at the south end of the beach because some of the families that visit may not be as tolerant."   She told me they allow topless so she was almost sure thongs were allowed but she wanted to ask to be sure ... didn't want me to come on vacation and have trouble with the police.  So anyone visiting Topsail in the future - you can enjoy thongs and even topless sunning!

Shaved4ts: As previously ruled by the NC state supreme court, thong & g-string swimwear is legal under state law. However there are some beach towns that have adopted their own local ordinances prohibiting thongs, like Kure Beach & Sunset Beach. Therefore like the previous poster recommended it's better to research yourself than to call. If you call you're just as likely to get someone who'll say no even if they're not prohibited in their town. Best bet is to stick to the beaches recommended on this forum ... outer banks, pea island, bird island are all thong legal.

Thonged at Nags Head both days this weekend in my Koala Incursion Thong. There's a nice public beach access by mile marker 14.5 with bathrooms and showers to rinse off.  Just hiked North a few yards from the access point and setup my umbrella with my wife for a few hours of lounging and sunning.  Plenty of people nearby both days, but it wasn't crowded by any means.  I heard one group giggling a bit as they setup nearby, but nobody approached.  The beach patrol drove right by me numerous times and never even slowed down.  I even walked out into the water several times, and seeing as it was low tide, I had to walk out nearly 50 yards from where I was setup before it was even waist deep, lol.

Spent a delightful week near Atlantic Beach earlier this summer.  Wore my thong the entire time, and had no problems.  By week's end, I had gotten to know most of the people staying at the same resort, as the beach was never crowded.  Everyone was very accepting.

If you're looking for somewhere that thongs may even be encourged (not just tolerated), I read in another thread that "Between Coquina beach (just south of Nags Head, acrossHwy 12 from the Bodie Island lighthouse) and Rodanthe" is a great area to go.  That info may be slightly out of date, but I'm sure it'll be great regardless.

I've never been to Bird Island but I'm planning on it this year. I have 3 questions for any of you that have been. First question is where to park at Sunset Beach?  Second question is how far is the walk to Bird Island?   Third question is while lying on your back tanning your front could you "legally" sun bath in a Bananna Peelz (a.k.a)  @@@@@@ Sock. It covers your gential area but has no side straps (it is basically just a pouch). Sorry for all the questions but this is how you get informed. I'm sure I'll have more before I get there. I'd really appreciate the info.

Parking ... After you crossover the bridge but just before you get to the stop sign there is public parking on the left. Get there before 10am on weekends and holidays.
Walking ... After you get on the beach turn right and walk around 1.5 to 2.0 miles. You'll see a sign where bird island starts. You'll also so the high dunes section. Most thongers set up half way between the start of the high dunes and the rock jetty. You can also rent a bike near the parking lot.
As for the baggie suit that would not be appropriate on this beach IMO, even though it may be technically legal.

Are g-string bathing suits permitted  as the thong ? G-strings are my preference.
lindros #144

Re:North Carolina Beaches & Outer Banks NC

Date Posted:04/08/2015 11:55:56Copy HTML

Yes, g-strings are permitted as per NC state supreme court ruling as per the ruling of NC State vs. Fly:

"To hold that buttocks are private parts would make criminals of all North Carolinians who appear in public wearing “thong” or “g-string” bikinis or other such skimpy attire during our torrid summer months."
http://caselaw.findlaw.com/nc-supreme-court/1393055.html

Just be sure the front part isn't transparent. Also, remember that Sunset Beach has a local code restricting thongs, so be sure to walk past Sunset Beach limits and be on Bird Island.

Just a quick report from Bird Island this past Easter holiday.    I only saw 1 lady wearing a thong from Thursday to Monday.  She and her husband were there Fri- Sunday.   She was also topless a bit if no one was too near.  No males were in thongs.  There were a few guys wearing Speedo  type bikinis.
A couple guys went  nude if there were no walkers.   I personally can't do thongs so I was one of the skimpy bikini/ nude guys  (nude when ever possible)..   Among the walkers, a few of the girls wore almost cheeky bikinis.

I've done quite a bit of tanning in just a thong or g-string in NC State park beaches. Never had an issue with rangers or breaking any laws. As long as your swimwear isn't see-thru and ladies tops are covered, you're good. If you are going to go nude, wear something totally sheer or ladies - fully expose your breasts, be sure to be discreet and watch for those who may not approve or for law enforcement to disagree. I've been everywhere mentioned except Bird Island.

Topfree is legal anywhere in NC except where local ordinances prohibit it. For example it is against the ordinance in Sunset Beach, but perfectly legal on the NC portion of  the Bird Island coastal Reserve. ( note that the jetty area is in South Carolina and that means tops and no thongs)   Also as an example, Asheville has no ordinance  against topfreedom and the city government does not wish to impose one. So in responese some of the county reps in the state legislature tried to ban it state wide a few years ago with HB39 nicknamed the nipple bill.  Luckily with all the other real problems NC was having, it was laughed out of committee.

["Topfree is legal anywhere in NC except where local ordinances prohibit it"]

Well I wouldn't count on this. Certainly topfree is not legal when there's a local ordinance prohibiting the activity. However elsewhere in NC topless bathing is still legally up in the air.

In the case of NC vs. Fly, the state supreme court ruled that buttocks were not included as private parts; however the court was silent in regards to breasts. Current law provides an exemption for breast feeding, but it's unclear reading the code whether that implies topless bathing is or isn't exempt.

Until this is decided by the courts or by a new law defining private parts, the legality of topless bathing in NC will depend on how local law enforcement handles these cases. On the outer banks topless seems to be OK, but at Bird Island I know of a couple occasions where topless women were told to cover up by Brunswick county police.
