Hey everyone,There have been a few posts in the past with regards to beaches and areas in Hawaii for thonging and minimal swimwear, but I was wondering if anyone has any new infomation or recent experience on Oahu. I'll be there on business next week and am looking for some beaches, hotels, eat. at which it would be appropriate. My meetings are in Honolulu, but I'll have a car and can get around any of the island, as I will have a few free days. I prefer more secluded and private areas [I don't enjoy overly cruisy gay beaches].I hear there are several spectacular hotel pools that would be worth a visit. And, no I won't be visiting other islands, so Little Beach on Maui is out...sorry.Hope to hear from some of you! Thanks in advance for recommendations!

The Outrigger Waikiki Beach is totally tolerant!  Its pool over-reaches the beach sans barrier.  You can thong at the pool and the beach that it fronts.  The beverage service to your lounge chair is great and with some decent tipping they will take some snapshots for you.

The "Waikiki Beach" part of the name is important.  Outrigger has a bunch of properties.  The extra $s you will pay for the "Waikiki Beach" property is well worth it.  Their "Reef" property is nice and on the beach, but its pool area is squished between 2 towers and separated from the beach.

I cannot wait to visit again!

When I was in Waikiki there were people wearing thongs.  No one seemed to mind.

Anyone know anything about Waialua or other nearby Oahu North Shore beaches? OK to thong there, or at least wear Speedos? I know surfers tend to be board shorts wearers.

I'm asking because I might be spending a month or two there this summer.

I've searched online, and it looks like Mokule'ia is a possible choice for thonging?

Oahu is thong-friendly from my perspective.  I was there with my girlfriend for a week last December and we thonged all over the island.

On Waikiki, we thonged on the beach near the Hilton Hawaiin Village with no problems.  Saw a few other guys (older men) and a few girls thonging as well.   I walked the length of the beach a few times in a small bikini but not in a thong.  No troubles there either.

I wore a thong on the North Shore while watching a surfing competition with no problems.  Was heckled once by a young boy but it didn't bother or stop me.

I also thonged on a beach on the west side of the island (last beach if you travel northly along the coast) with no problems.  That was my favorite beach.  Not completely secluded but only a few people around.

Wore a small bikini while snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.  No problems.  Even had a very nice couple from the South offer to take picture of my girlfriend and I.  So I would say it was no big deal.

Overall it was a great week with very little clothes!!!

I'm reporting this from Waialua in Oahu. On July 4th, we made it to Mokuleia beach, and I'm happy to report that this is definitely a thong friendly beach, if only for the fact that it's almost deserted, and known as a gayish nudist beach. Women and men would feel quite comfortable in a thong here, but don't expect to see a lot of people around. If you do see people here, chances are they'll be in bikinis (women) and board shorts (men), but they won't be too surprised to see a thong or two, because all the locals know what to expect.

Locally to where I'm staying, Waialua Beach is more family oriented, as it's all houses along the beach, with very little public access. There is one public access area, next to Au Street. Not very busy, but lots of kids and locals and California surfer types in board shorts. I don't like this beach because the sand is too narrow, and there's a man-made reef that starts very near the shore and goes way out. Too shallow to swim over the reef, and the reef is too rocky to climb over without reef shoes. At high tide, the sea is really choppy. However, you have a very good chance of swimming with sea turtles here if you brave the rocks.

The hotel-front beach in Waikiki is thong friendly for women, but definitely not for men. No way I would wear a thong there. There are so many midwestern American types that even the Japanese don't wear Speedos on Waikiki Beach. Out of the several thousand guys I saw -- let's say 3,000 -- 2,500 wore below-the-knee board shorts, 498 wore above-the-knee shorts, and 2 wore Speedos -- one was a Swedish looking guy learning to surf, and one was a skinny Japanese guy surfing in a bright red Speedo. I got a funny picture of the guy if anyone wants to see, and if you can wait for me to put it up. Regardless it was a sad statement on herd mentality.

I didn't even wear my bikini style Hom suit there. Maybe on a second visit... but as I've moved on to San Diego, I'll have to save that for another trip.

I made several trips to Waikiki last year staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village the majority of the times.  I have seen speedos, bikinis and a few thongs on guys in front of the hotel although most guys are now wearing those awful board shorts.  From what I have observed, the section of the beach in front of the Hilton is wider and more guys will favor the skimpier suits than around the more crowded main section of beach.  At the west end of Waikiki is a park where you will see many guys in thongs and bikinis and also on the small section of beach there. This beach is called "Queens " beach so that should give you a hint.  Also, Diamond Head beach, under the lighthouse tower, is a great place to thong.  You will see alots of guys and some girls (topless), all in thongs.  I have thonged here several times and although I suspect most of the guys are gay, it was a very comfortable place to thong and aside from a couple of lurkers and one guy with a camera, my visits went without incident!

Going to Honolulu next month.  Wondering where the best beach for thonging is located.  I see the last post was from 2005 so this thread certainly doesn't get much activity.

Any thongers in the Honolulu area want to get together next month let me know.

Back in 2004, I spent a week in January on Oahu.  I went to two beaches in the Northwest part of Oahu.  One was Kaena Point State Park. Another was along the Farrington Highway near Dillingham Field. At both places, I wore a thong. At Kaena Point, I was the only thonger, but there were others near Dillingham Field. There were few people at both beaches.

If you're OK with a gay beach check out Diamond Head Beach under the lighthouse. Small beach but awesome for thonging and I almost always saw  other guys in thongs everytime I've been there.

Yeah I'll check it out.  I'm straight but I have no problem with a gay beach.  This may sound stupid but I'd rather have guys checking me out than women laughing at the fact I'm wearing a thong.

I've looked that beach up on the net and found various instructions on how to locate it.  Can you tell me how you get there?

Sure. North of end Waikiki. Head past the aquarium and keep going to the end of the park. The road veers left then u take the right turn up the hill towards diamond head. About half way up the hill you'll see a road on your right heading down to the water. There are a couple really sweet, white modern mansions at the entrance to that road. The road is a dead end and ends at the beach. Parking is limited down there. Just walk through the lava flow and that's where the beach starts. The lighthouse is right above the beach. Not great for swimming and much better at low tide, but a really nice, chill beach scene and always fellow thongers there. It's my favorite beach on Oahu.

I was at the Hilton Resort at Waikiki Beach a few years ago. I was with my parents so I didn´t wear my thong when they were around but as soon as I got the chance I went to the beach by the park by my self and wore nothing but a thong and no one seems to mind. I walked all across the beach all the way to the aquarium just got some stares that didn´t bother me. I saw a couple of mature ladies wearing thongs as well so I laid down next to them for tanning and they didn´t mind at all. Next days I just ran to the beach each time I could. I had my thong under my board shorts all the time. One day we went to get a massage at the hotel spa and the masseuse asked me to remove my clothing leaving my underwear. I think she didn´t expect me to have a thong on so I asked her if that was fine and she just smiled and told me that was good. She didn´t cover me with towels or anything at anytime so I enjoyed been there just laying butt naked. When she saw my tan line she was really amaze and asked me if I didn´t mind being out like that and a lot of curios questions that didn´t bother me at all. Last day I got to tan and swim on a g-string by the pool and the little lake they have and walked to my room and made a stop at the souvenir store wearing nothing else. I just had my towel on my shoulders just in case I bumped into my parents I could cover up.

Hey all!
Seems this post has been a bit silent for a few years.  Any updates on good beaches for thonging in/around Honolulu area?  I'll be there next week for work but may have some time to hit the beach.  I've thonged at Queen's Beach without any issues years ago, but wondered if it's still the same.  I did thong at Ft DeRussy beach a few times and again, no issues.  I've heard that Ala Moana Beach Park and Sand Island (not sure where that beach is),, are also good.
Any thongers in Hawaii able to provide updates?  Any recent visitors with news about the beaches?
Much appreciated.

I have not been to Hawaii in almost ten years. I have worn thongs at Queens Beach (near Diamond Head), and at beaches along the North and West shore. On the Big Island, I have worn thongs at beaches in Kona and Hilo. If I am on the Big Island, I like to go to Kehena Beach in the Puna District. It is a black beach that is located down a steep trail on the South Shore. It is a nude beach. Also, on Maui, I have been to Little Beach which is also a nude beach. To me it seems that thongs are fine anywhere in Hawaii.

I was at Hapuna Beach and wore a thong.  It was a non-event.  About 20 percent of the patrons were thonging.
I snorkeled at Kahaluu Beach while wearing a thong without incident.
I hiked (7 miles round trip) at Volcanoes National Park to where the lava flows into the ocean without incident.
I wore a thong at the Hilton Waikoloa Village pools and lagoon without any issues.
Overall, the big island seems to very thong friendly.

Just got back from Maui over the weekend. Stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani.

Thonged at the polo beach pretty much on the grounds of the Fairmont for the entire week. Nothing to extreme since it was mid winter break an there was a decent amount of younger kids there did not want to offend any of the parents.

I mixed it up between a standard black sunseeker rio from skins wear that I was able to wedge the little back into a thong when I wanted to ,and to a standard skinz coral thong.

No one really could care less what I was wearing which was great since this was the first time on a Maui beach. The week that I spent at the beach I was going in about of the water with no complaints.

Three ladies over the week came an gave me props for wearing thongs. One lady saw me with the two different suits on an told me she liked the sunseeker more then thong. Maybe it was how it had the tiny side strings.

There was about 1/2 dozen other thongers at the beach each day all women in there 30's . They all looked very good wearing thongs. A few husbands sported nice bikinis 1/2 coverage so there getting to the thongs.

Also took a snorkel trip on the Maui magic Boat all female crew (4) the Deck hand girls (2) wore very cheecky bottoms I wore the sunseeker again. The crew was very polite I got extra attention when I was on deck sunnning by them bringing me drinks an snacks. I did get my picture with the captain so maybe I'll make it on there page for advertising or something who knows lol.

Wanted to make it to little beach (the unofficial nude beach)  but did not have time so maybe next time . Over all had a great time thonging at the Fairmont :)

I'm staying near sunset beach right now. A good majority ~75% of local girls and about 5-10% of female tourists are wearing thongs. Haven't seen any thongs on guys. I had no problems laying out on the beach and walking about in my muscleskins thong. No comments positive or negative. Really relaxed attitude up here. At one point this afternoon, a local girl with a thong and an amazing tan set up next to me.

Don't worry about offending the kids. There were a few different groups of local girls, the ones closest to me around 15 years old talking about school (just before summer break) and all wearing very tiny thongs. Very relaxed atmosphere, go and enjoy

Re purchasing thong swimsuits, I would definitely buy before going to Hawaii.  Honolulu is a large city with lots of shopping, but finding what you're looking for could take up a lot of time.  Why waste vacation time searching?   I would be surprised if you could find a man's thong at all.

About ten years ago, I was in Hawaii on business for a week. I went a few days early, rented a car, and stayed in a hotel two blocks in from Waikiki Beach. The hotels there are reasonably priced compared to those on the beach. I wore my thong on Waikiki on a small beach towards Diamond Head; there were other thongers there. Also, I wore my thong on a beach on the North Coast near Dillingham Field and on the West Coast (Keawaula). These beaches were rather empty, not crowded like Waikiki.

I value my sunny vacations too much to waste them on trying to find things in stores that I'm not familiar with...   it is bad enough if you need to buy some new beach shoes or replace some broken sunglasses while on vacation.   I did have to shop for those a couple of times...     so other than those broken or stolen things, I've never shopped on vacation other than getting food and gasoline. :)

I've worn my thong at the beach toward Diamond Head.  The name of the beach is Sans Souci and is next to the Otani hotel that I stay at when I'm in Oahu.  It's away from the crowds and pretty quiet.  I had no issues wearing a thong at that beach.  Further north is Queens Beach which is a gay area and lots of guys in bikinis but I didn't see any thongs.   There were several women in thongs about 10 years ago on Sans Souci so I would expect a lot more now.  I'd highly recommend Sans Souci.

Going to Oahu, Kauai, and Maui early March for a week. I read about Kauai being great for thong sunbathing, but wondered about Maui. Seems OK also. Will try "Big Beach" and "Little Beach". Not a nudist, but should I go to Big and Little? Certainly will observe and decide when I'm actually there! Also, over 15 years ago I swam in Hanauma Bay, I hope to swim/snorkel in my new thongs I just got! Hope it's not too crowded. Crowds at Waikiki is not my thing. So, any comments on Maui and Hanauma (Oahu) would be great! Thanks.

Re the post re Maui, Kauai, etc:   Hawaiian beaches where there are a lot of locals are probably not your best bets.  On Kauai, Secret Beach, maybe Hanalei.  On Oahu, you would probably find more thongers at Waikiki because there are more visitors.  Little Beach is a nude beach, so of course a thong would be fine, but you might feel just as out of place being the only thonger there as you might feel as the only thonger on Big Beach.  My experience on Hawaii (>30 visits) is that male beachwear is sort of conservative.   I am generally the only guy in a speedo brief where I go on Big Island.

Re:Oahu, Honolulu, Waikiki, etc???

I have been to Hawaii about eighteen times over the past twenty years on business. Usually, I try to stay a few extra days to enjoy the beaches. On Oahu, I generally go to beaches away from Honolulu. I have been to beaches on the West Coast and also the North East Coast. Both locations are not crowded and I wore a thong. On Maui, I went to Big Beach/Little Beach. To get to Little Beach, I had to walk across Big Beach. Little Beach is a nude beach. I was there one day, and I noticed that several nudes were standing up at the shore line and looking at the water. So, I did the same and got a good view of several whales spouting. I believe that it was during January when whales are around Hawaii. Another day on Maui, I went to Hana; the road itself is famous for hairpin turns. I parked in the town, had lunch, and then walked to a secluded red sand beach. I began by wearing a thong, but since most other people were nude, the thong came off. I have been to the Big Island and went to a local beach in Hilo wearing a thong, and to a black beach (Makena) where just about everyone was nude. It was a bit of a hike between the road and the beach, but the beach was worth the hike. Dolphins are often in the water and it is also known as Dolphin Beach. I have been to beaches in Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island and have always worn a thong on them or less. I never received any negative comments. The people are very friendly, especially on the nude beaches where we hide nothing.

NJBob, I am interested in where you wore a thong on the Big Island. I swim at Richardson outside Hilo, and I feel pretty out there in a swim brief. At Kehena (not Makena, that's Maui) I prefer going nude, like you suggest. Do you thong on the west side beaches?

Has anyone had any experience with wearing a thong at the four seasons/Disney aulani resort beaches?

I am traveling there in about a month for work for a week. I am provided transportation to and from the airport so not getting a car. I figured I would stay on property and just hang out.

@thong987 see my post above. My late wife and I did venture up to a couple of resorts where you're staying. I felt like the beaches were overrun with families and lots of kids. Everyone was in typical "American" swimwear. I didn't see any thongs and every guy was in dorkshorts. I love the place where we stayed as it was very low key and mostly locals at the beach. If I were you I'd pack something else that fit in with the crowd otherwise you get the stares and catcalls from the tourists.

Thong987 we were there for a week last November. Where you are staying is lagoon 1 and is share by the Four Seasons and Disney. My wife and I laid out at lagoon 2 each day in G-strings. We saw a couple of other women in thongs but no men. Lagoon 3 is the Marriott KoOlina, and lagoon 4 closes to the harbor is where most of the local hang out. Hope this helps. I will be in Hawaii on work maybe in early March, near the Honolulu airport. Probably just one day to relax. Planning to stay at either the Marriott Waikiki or the Sheraton Waikiki. Any recommendations? Need to be somewhere in uber distance to the airport since I won’t have a rental. Also prefer a crowd with lots of minimal bikinis. Reading up, sounds like the diamond head end of Waikiki somewhat fills this. Thanks!

Maui has never been an issue for us, neither of us has ever wore more than a G-string on the beaches and more frequently wore much less. Even when we were at our resort my wife would wear her G-string bikini with a sheer sarong coming and going. We drove completely around the island one day and she wore just her bikini and left the sarong in the car when we stopped to sight see. One trip we stayed in Hana at a little resort with just a few cabins with two other couples we knew, and we were the only guests for the 4-day stay. The evening we arrived she wore just a single string G-string to the hot tub and I wore a baggie and when we were walking from our cabin to the hot tub area we passed the owner who told us she liked our "cute suits" and also mentioned others often just go nude while staying at the resort. So we removed our suits before we even got to the hot tub. A little while later the other couples joined us in the hot tub after about 20 minutes it got too hot for my wife and she sat on the side of the tub and this is when the others first realized she was nude. Because we had gone to the beach with the other couples many times. They had seen us both in minimal swimwear and my wife topless so they had just assumed we were wearing our swimsuits. Later she ask if I wanted to go get something to drink and I stood up and this is when one of the ladies said "it about time we get some eye candy" as I got out of the tub. Then I dried off and threw the towel in a basket before walking back to our cabin stopping by the dining room to get a couple of bottles of water.
