Re:Older Thongers 50+ to the 60's

This is a great thread. :-)Here's my spin: people should be able to wear whatever they want. Its not a competition, no one has a perfect body. If one is outside and its hot at the beach or a pool, wear what is comfortable. Like everyone else, I love to see and appreciate beautiful bodies and confident attitudes - but neither are prerequisites for minimal swimwear. I think the idea that you need to have a "beach body" before you can uncover with the tiny bikini, speedo, or thong causes a lot of people to get messed up body-image issues. I say, stay in shape to be healthy - life is better, longer, and more fun when you do.All that being said - I'm also vain and want to look as good as I can. That way my wife has the best eye candy of all - right next to her ;-)Plus, I figure if I'm a guy in his mid-50's (55 right now) and I'm leaner and fitter, and wearing less, than most everyone on the beach it makes me a good ambassador for fitness and minimal swimwear.

I was just involved in a discussion with my daughter and a few of her friends (40ish) about swimwear. One of them mentioned that her husband wanted her to wear a swimsuit he had seen in the SI swimsuit issue. Her response was, as expected, no way with my bumps, cellulite and stretch marks. She insists on a black one piece with skirt as did the others. My response was why? To me a suit like that only begs to be judged, as one does not care enough to take care of themselves. And why should you be afraid of what anyone would say as long as your significant other is happy? It is my wish that women would get over this phobia that 40 is a death sentence for their body and expose it (flaws and all) to some sunlight. If a woman has gone through childbirth those flaws are badges of honor not scars of shame! I have no idea who reads this forum, other than the regulars but I hope these are some words of encouragement.

Nuwalket - I agree with you. But women have it really tough in our culture. The vast majority of the media message is that slim young (very young) women are the ideal. Anything other than that and you don't measure up. Men have it SO EASY. Just look at the way men are often portrayed: they are often rumpled, half-shaven, older, grungy, sort-of lean, sort-of fit, and with LOTS of loose clothing on. Just like at the beach (or the gym, for that matter) - men are more covered up, women wear suits that are certainly body hugging if not also very bare.

Lets be honest gw32; both sexes have to deal with the Madison Avenue ideal! Yes, in an ideal world all of us would be fit and trim but try working full time, have elderly parents, two active teenagers and throw in a few of your own health issues and it becomes a chore to fit in dinner let alone exercise time. Sorry I'm no longer the Adonis I once was as a college athlete but there is sun, sand and water to be enjoyed! And if I can't be nude then it will be in as little as can be worn.

Nuwalket, yes I agree. However it is far more accepted for men to be a bit less than "perfect".  At any rate, as I said a couple comments earlier, "Its not a competition, no one has a perfect body. If one is outside and its hot at the beach or a pool, wear what is comfortable." I'm all about acceptance and being relaxed in your own skin. People do what they can and everyone has stuff in their life. I do what I do for me. :-)

I started wearing thongs to the beach in 1995 when I was in my mid 30's. This month I will be 55 and love them more than ever. My kids have grown up seeing me in them and think it is normal. My wife, except for a two-year span in the late 90s, is very tolerant as well. I've noticed that I get more nonchalant as I age and really don't give a rip what people think any more. I do try to be respectful and not setup near families if I have other space available but I have no qualms if they setup near me -- I just try to make sure they can see what I am wearing before they settle down.
Thongs are just another type of swimwear and should be allowed anywhere people wear swimwear. I don't care if you are 16 or 61, male or female, 95 pounds or 295... If it is what you want to do, go for it!

Maybe I should weigh in on this one - and say hallelujah to all you previous posters! I am over 50 now and enjoy sunning, beaching and tanning in thong-back posers more than ever. Like so many of you, my wife was less than supportive twenty years ago, but now she insists that all I wear are thong suits. A lot of her attitude change came from me being seen at the beach over the last few years by a lot of her friends and co-workers. It didn't bother me at all when they "discovered" me bare buns on the beach; I'm still competing in bodybuilding as I have for 30 years, so I am accustomed to being in front of large crowds and judicious scrutiny of the judging panel in tiny suits. For her, it was revolutionary; they were all complimentary. Rather than her being embarrassed or shamed by them, these ladies rag on her for having a hot hubby. She is very comfortable with it now and has begun reverting back to her smaller style bikinis too. When she realized in her circle of friends that having a thonging husband did not reflect poorly on her, she has been very much at ease.
And on another note, age is no factor! Last summer while we were vacationing at Daytona Beach, we happened upon a knockout hardbody lady who was in a tiny black g-string bikini playing in the sand with three kids. I was sure she looked 40ish, very pretty with a noticeably athletic build and beautifully tanned - obvious that style of suit was her normal go to. After striking up a conversation, she told us those were three of her six grandchildren, and she had just turned 63 years old. She was more striking to me than ever. Obviously she has taken great care of herself, but I was so taken with her self-confidence and she was so graceful. Then on top of that, to have her grandchildren with her on the beach like that. That is so cool! I can only imagine what well-adjusted adults those children will be grow up to be!
As others have said in various posts; attitude has everything to do with being able to pull off wearing minimal swimwear - a confident, healthy self-image that is not self-conscious is very appealing and attractive!

Ah the golden years when things start to go wrong. I had to have an abdominal sonogram mostly centered on the kidneys. So not knowing what would be involved I wore a conservative Joe Boxer thong, in camouflage. The tech told me that all that needed to be removed was my shirt but then lay on my back to start. We had some friendly banter and soon went from professional to comfortable in talking while she did the procedure. There was discussions about retirement, how she wished she could go to Florida like we did last year and where we go camping. Then she had me turn on my left side and position my right arm over my head. That left a gap with my jeans and exposed the top of the thong. I could not see her face but she said "Thong underwear?". I said it's all I own. Then she asked, "Swimming too?". Answering as much as I can depending on where I am. She mentioned Florida again and told me about spring break when she was in school so I described Fort De Soto to her and mentioned Ohio State Parks such as Alum Creek and Lake Erie's East Harbor. When I rolled back the other way she said she wished more guys her age were as brave as me and would quit wearing those long shorts, with underwear yet! She thanked me at the end for being so cooperative and giving her some tips on where she could thong this summer. I also mentioned the site here if she wanted to ask about specific places or have any questions.

I'm in this demographic and work to stay fit and "presentable". We stay a lot at Hidden Beach Resort, which is nude. The adjoining properties are "textile". I like to run on the beach and need to cross the adjoining property and so wear shorts to the hotel boundary and strip off to a thong to run. When I'm done I always carry my towel and shorts to the shower and get the salt water rinsed off and have had pleasant reactions from the people who make it a point to notice. The huge majority just ignore me, which is fine. I put the shorts back on to get "home". Unfortunately I have not noticed any other guys in a thong, although I have spotted some very brief bikinis. Thonged females aren't common either, although there are always a number of them topless. I get the impression that people think it is "brave" to wear skimpy swimwear, and it just seems so silly. Morbid obesity is certainly a discouraging situation, but otherwise it seems a waste of paradise to miss the opportunity to revel in the sun and sea. I intend to keep running in a thong for as long as I can run and will offer support to anyone else who needs it. We need to be free!

I am almost out of this demographic (reaching 70 next year) and intend to keep wearing micro swimwear as long as I can go to the beach. In my many years of hanging out on the beach and at pools, including being a competitive swimmer a long time ago, I have not noticed much of a correlation between age and being out of shape. I saw a lot of spring breakers here that have a much larger BMI than most of us!If you are comfortable with your body, wear what you want. My issue with overweight/out of shape individuals is not how they look on the beach (I don't have to look, after all). My issue is that whenever I see someone obviously overweight/ out of shape, I see healthcare dollars flying away.

I have actually lost weight since I started wearing thongs in public.  I like them of course, but being able to wear them caused me to want to look better.  Also all the time I spent swimming and wandering the beaches and trails in my thong worked as exercise and my appetite actually went down as my exercise went up.  Each time I got a new thong or dug out an older one that was too small and now fit, I felt better.  So while I had started with a good self confidence about how I looked and shrugged off negative comments due to my weight, I was able to loose weight I had gained and could never drop before.

Well done ohiotonger, I also consider the fact of wearing thongs in public as a tool  and a reward.  It's a tool that encourages me to keep the fat away from my mid section, the image of me wearing a thong below a six pack abdominals is enough motivation to despise all the junk food and high calorie diets that are so prevalent.  It's also a reward because it becomes the best price after doing the right thing. The same happens to me with compression tops;  many guys wear compression bottoms with baggy tops, for the same reason.... it hides that critical area called the mid section.   I am one of the very few guys who wears the whole combo top and bottom;   because it motivates me to achieve my best shape in the abdominal area.     Compression tops can give you very obvious muffin tops;  therefore the motivation to wear them and look your best.

ohiothonger and John Howard: I couldn't agree more. I don't really care if other people are out of shape or obese (except that its unhealthy for them - but thats not the point of this thread) and want to wear whatever they want to the beach. But, for me, minimal attire is excellent motivation. Plus, being in my 50's and looking really fit is a way of pushing back at getting older. :-)

Ohio, John Howard and GW I agree with all of you. I recently turned 60 and have been wearing thongs for 35 years when it first became possible to fid mens thong swimwear. Before that it was difficult at best. I noticed I had gained an extra 15 lbs and had lost some shape so i went back to my former workout regime and so far since Jan 4th haven't missed a day. The results have been amazing. On a recent trip to ST Maartin I so enjoyed my thong week and was much more confident. The smaller the better both body and swimwear. And John Howard makes a great point about it just being much healthier. Age is and should be no barrier, And neither should be gender,

I too love seeing older men..and women in their thongs at the beach. Especially if the men are shaved and doing the good work at the gym to keep in shape.

I'm 54, and have been thonging for 25 years or so.  I, like many others mentioned on this thread, have used my exhibitionism ( which I boldly admit to) as a good reason to stay in shape.  So often, you see someone in amazing shape, in tiny clothes, and hear something like "If I had that body, I'd wear X too!"  I'm 5' 10", & 160 pounds, with a very well defined thong tan line that has been in the same basic shape for at least 10-15 years.  I love being able to have evidence of my thonging even when I'm naked.

I am 51 and whole heartedly agree with everyone's views above. I wear thongs as underwear because I like the way they look on me AND I love the way they feel on me. I have been wearing them as underwear for nearly 20 years now. I live in NC and thongs much less speedo style suits are just not widely accepted here. I have worn a small Brazilian back bikini on the beach here in NC when it wasn't crowded and I was alone. It has always been a fantasy of mine to wear my thongs in public but I have always chickened out. That is going to change because I am going to Sunsplash this year and I absolutely can't wait. I wish I was in better shape physically, but I just love my craft beer too much and as a result, I have a beer gut. I am 6'2", 210 +/- and I hope I fit in at Sunsplash with everyone else!

NCThonger:  Absolutely you will fit in with everyone else at SunSplash!    No one will be judging you on your physical size or shape.    It's all about just enjoying who we are and what we like to wear.  You will find out that it becomes a really great brotherhood of guys, all with the same interest in wearing skimpy swimwear.   You will fit right in and make some really good friends.  You will definitely be ready to come back again next year.....guarantee it!

NCThonger, - you will be in good company. I have been unable to run for two years, and so put on the pounds. To at least do something now and again some days we ride bicycles in the evenings, but then we drink beer after.  So like you I have put on a few pounds this last year.

Great to hear so many stories of us older guys.
In many posts I hear that we have become more adventurous in later age.
Which leads to the question
Where are the younger guys ?
And why are there so very few who will even try a thong ?

I remember one day at a beach years ago I was wondering if I could get away with a thong.
I saw a woman just up the beach in a cheeky bottom so that heartened me.
But then a young surfer came and sat down in front of me wearing long boardies of course.
And I didn't feel like walking right in front of him in a thong.
But then noticed his boardies were dropping a bit at the back and guess what. Thong underneath !
So off I went.
But why oh why would he wear boardies if he was obviously already a thong convert ?
