Does anyone know of thong friendly areas in the Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill, NC region? There are plenty of Parks and local apartment pools, any ideas or suggestions?

For a weekend trip you can go to Ocracoke island.  Leave very early and use the car ferry to get there.  Park at the camp ground entrance, or camp there, and go left, (north), south is alot of beach traffic and fishermen.  About a mile north of the campground is a 4-wheel drive access to a small portion of the beach, you must walk the rest of the beach.  This is a good area, especially to the right.  North of the Pony Pen is also very nice and quiet.  Eat at Howar'd Pub.  Take drinking water and a hat.

Do you have a rough estimate on how long of a trip it is, and do you need to call ahead for a ticket for the ferry?

Thanks for the tip!!!

Here is  the information about the ferry.  www.ncferry.org   Fees and crossing times are at the bottom of the schedule.  If I can be of more guidance, just leave another message.  Let all of us know about your trip.  Not all routes take reservations.  We traveled from Cedar Island to Ocracoke, a 2-1/2 hour trip.  It was a nice nap time, and we were fresh for the beach.  I would recommend a reservation for this route, your wait will only be until your departure time.  Be there 1/2 hour before your ferry departure time or you will lose your place on the boat and you will wait in line for the next available spot.  We know from a first hand experience.  You only pay when you get on the ferry.  The thonging is great.

When I lived in NC in the late 70's we used to go to the many rock quarries that were along interstate 85. Back then thongs were unheard of but I used to wear speedo's and sometimes we would go nude. I have no idea if people still go to the rock quarries but I would check with locals and see if anyone knows about them.

The best rock quarry was off Buckhorn Rd. near Mebane. On a nice Sunday there would be several hundred people there. There were some nice cliffs to sit on and a 40' one that was a great high dive.

You may try Terrra server or another one of those "spy sat" sites to locate quarries. Usually they were close to the interstate as that is what they built the road bed out of.

Well, it was a lovely, warm day in the Triangle today (mid 80's) and I made it to Jordan Lake. I asked if thonging was permitted and got the response: "It would be fine as long as I wasn't naked. But, there are going to be a lot of people around and it may make some people uncomfortable." I thanked the rangers and found a spot in the middle of Seaforth Beach. There were plenty of girls with bikinis and guys with dork shorts. Only one guy with tight square cuts.

I hung out for a bit before deciding to move to a secluded area. I made it to a small clearing off of the Pond View trail and set up a blanket and towel. There were 2 female couples that stayed for 15 minutes and then took off. I stripped down to my swim thong and proceeded to enjoy the warm sun and beautiful day, Several boats went by, some waved to me. About 20 minutes later, one of the young women who was there earlier ran back and was looking for her keys (which I had found) and just smiled and said thanks.

I haven't got the courage yet to wear anything less than very small bikinis to the main Jordan Lake beaches. Maybe there are others in the area who want to try to set the trend this summer?

Went to the Ebeneezer Beach recreation area of Jordan Lake today.  When I arrived  around 11:30 there was one guy wearing an "almost thong," it was a couple of inches wide in the back. I figured this was a good sign and moved midway down the beach and set up my towel. The weather started out overcast but ended up turning into a scorcher. I wore a fairly modest, lined swim thong.

This was the first time I have tried thonging in one of the populated areas of Jordan Lake and it was a wonderful experience. An older German couple set up near me soon after I arrived and the man was wearing a speedo style suit and the woman was wearing a speedo two piece. I didn't see any other thong wearers but, I did not receive any negative comments. I did notice a group consisting of two famalies that set up near me but once the husbands came around they decided to move further away. I saw a few park rangers today but they didn't seem bothered.

There was a large family or two who were French speaking and all the kids wore speedos. I guess with the international nature of the group today, I didn't feel too out of place with what I was wearing. I ended up staying there for about five hours, swimming, sunning and afterwards, enjoying a refreshing shower at the outdoor shower near the changing house.

And, yes, I believe the Jordan  is an arny corps. of engineers lake.

Jordan is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, but recreational use of the lake is governed by the NC Division of Parks and Recreation.  That's why you see NC park rangers on shore and NC wildlife officers on the water.  It also means that the lake is subject to NC nudity regulations.  It's almost irrelevant anyway, because the locals are so conservative that a man in speedo or a women in a rio-cut bottom is a rarity.  The crowds seem to be even more covered up on Sundays, with many males and females sunning and swimming in shorts and T-shirts.  Even people on boats, far from the public beaches, generally stick to conservative dress.  Having visited the lake regularly for about 15 years, I've seen exactly one woman (albeit a few times) in a thong.  Bravo to tan_lines for daring to wear a thong on a public beach at Jordan!

The weather turned warm (mid 80's) and I figured, why not start off the season in a thong. Was back at Jordan Lake and was the only one there in a thong (on a Sunday). Plenty of people getting sun tans and plenty of park rangers around. Nobody said anything although, a teenage girl pointed and laughed and later took a camera phone photo but that was about it. Stayed out for about three hours and had a great time.

While the temperature is still warm - low 80's, I made it out to Jordan Lake at the Seaforth Beach location. Due to the drought, the water level was really low, twice the normal amount of beach! When I arrived, I was one of 5 people on the beach, 4 were fully dressed and appeared to be surveying the lack of water. I set up my towel and stripped down to a 1/2" sided black  thong and enjoyed one of the season's last thong-worthy days.

Within 15 min.s a couple arrived and set up 100 or so feet away. I had to do a double take when the woman took off her clothes and put on her bikini right there. I figured that's fine, they wouldn't care if I was thonging then. The day proceeded leisurely and I read and napped a bit until, the girl in the bikini started walking a ways down the beach. I noticed her looking around, scanning the area, before slipping off her bikini and skinny dipping in the lake for 5 minutes or so. Her partner was napping I believe, so he didn't notice her but I got a good laugh from the scene.

All, in all, not a bad day at Jordan Lake for mid October!

We had unseasonally warm weather earlier this week, mid 80's, and started off the season in a thong at Jordan Lake. The next day I went out in a Muscleskin rio style. Both days were very relaxed and warm. One other sunbather is a speedo type suit. Now the weather is rainy and in the 40's. I will have to wait a few more weeks until it really starts warming up.

Yes tan_lines, we had great weather that week, like early summer. I grabbed some sun time myself on the pool deck at my gym in my speedo after swimming some laps. There were some nice looking girls from the hotel next door who joined me in their string bikinis. They seemed to already have nice tans from fake baking I assume. We are looking forward to warmer days.

I was out at Jordan Lake this weekend in a black 1/2" sided thong and was pleased to see another thonger on the beach. She was wearing a tankini top and a thong bottom. This was the first woman I've seen in a thong at Jordan Lake. She was getting a lot of attention by others on the beach. I'm pretty sure I got quite a few looks as well, it's normally a pretty conservative crowd.

The weather was a bit cloudy with threats of thunder showers, as the weather gets warmer I hope to see more fellow thongers going to the lake!

I live up near Falls Lake and have been a few times in a thong, typically I stay in secluded areas.  I have not ran into any issues, but again I don't go to the main beaches.  Does anyone have any experiences at Falls Lake.

I was also planning on trying some local parks in the chapel hill area during lunch.  Any input on local parks in the RDU area.  Any locals around chapel hill that would like to meet up and grab some sun over lunch, let me know.

Hi d_thongs,

I used to live in Chapel Hill (2003-2007) and the place I remember thonging at was Jordan Lake. Since thongs are legal at all state parks, you should be good there. Other than that, I never found anywhere local to thong. If I didn't want to hang out at Jordan Lake, I'd drive all the way to the coast (one of the nice things being that there seemed to be fewer bugs). If you find any other places in the Triangle area that are thong friendly, I'd love to hear about it.

The Days Inn at the junction of Tryon Rd., S. Wilmington St./70  and Fayetteville Rd./401 on the south side of Raleigh was extremely friendly when I've been there - especially the housekeeping staff.  When I got to the pool, I asked a couple of the maids walking by if I would offend anyone and their reply was, "Show it off, baby!"  The pool is right next to the reception area / office with huge windows - great rush & the staff didn't care at all.

Based on this thread and the fact that NC State Parks have no laws against thongs, I headed out to Jordan Lake last week for a day at one of the main beaches there. I've thonged in public plenty now and in other NC State Parks so I wasn't too concerned about hassle. I picked a good spot on one end of the beach with just a few other single females and a couple around and parked it for the afternoon. I saw a couple older men elsewhere on the beach in speedos with their families but that was the limit of my exploring.

I had a great day in my thong with no issues. The ladies around me never batted an eye or seemed to take issue with my suit - perhaps some even enjoyed it, lol. A cute college age girl (I'm not college age anymore) sat the closest to me which was cool most of the time I was there. One time when I walked to the water for a swim, I heard a teen girl in the water with her family shout "Wow!" which I assume was in reference to me, haha. Towards the end of the afternoon, a group of 4 Latino ladies in their late 20's-early 30's sat down at a table on the edge of the woods for a picnic and basically stared at me for the last hour I was there. They didn't hide their stares and just smiled when I would look at them. The men who came near me were always with a girl and they didn't comment or cause any problems.

I know that everyday thonging can't be this pleasant but I expect I will return to the park to safely thong again sometime this summer.

We are going to be in the Cary/Raleigh, North Carolina Area starting this Sunday for the next week, where can we go that we can wear our thongs and not be hasseled for it.  Where can we go like a lake that it is ok to wear minimal swimwear and that there are not a lot of people around.  I have worn thongs in Florida on the beach but not at a Lake setting.  I wear Muscleskins thongs.

In the Wilmington area try Bird Island.  It is just to the west of Sunset Beach where thonging is against the town town ordinences Topless and thonging are allowedi n the coastal reserve up to the rocks. On the rocks and further west you are in South Carolina where they are a tad more repressed.

Thonging is permitted at Ft. Fisher SRA ( state recreational area) about 20+ miles south of Wilmington at the very end of US Hwy 421.  I drive my 4x4 with permit onto the beach and can thong/speedo anywhere you like.  However, some summer beach go'ers are super conservative and are easily identifiable.  But, the drivable part of Ft. Fisher is 3 miles long and has 3 major accesses to the river side of the Cape Fear point for kayaking, windsurfing, or more privacy.  No topless or nudity allowed!  You'll find very few if any thongers or speedo clad men.  But, they both are allowed.  Even during the summer high season, the beach is not crowed during the week.  But, of course, it's more so on weekends.  Personally I prefer to wear bulge accommodating 1 to 2 inch waist black briefs because I look like a pro-wrestler or powerlifter.I am new to this board, but would like get a group of enthusiast to hang out together at Ft. Fisher since it's so easy to enjoy yourself there.

I have had a couple of pleasant trips to sunset beach and bird island.  I wore a rio bikini at sunset and had a lot of fun with the reactions at the semi crowded beach.  Then, I put on a thong and went to bird island.  Enjoyed a nice long walk both times and hardly saw anyone else.  One time, I encountered some topless women and men in thongs and speedos who spoke to me and were very friendly.  The other time there was nobody around.  I walked a long time in my thong, then took it off for long time.  That is a very scenic and large beach.

I second Bird Island for thongs.   Go to the west part of Sunset Beach, cross over @ 40th  and go west @ 1 mile to the Bird Island Reserve. Thongs are legal there, but more folks hang out further west between the mailbox and the stone jetty, which is South Carolina, where thongs are against the law

Martylouie:  The space between the mailbox and the rock jetty is still North Carolina so thongs still legal there. South Carolina doesn't start till you get close to the jetty.

BTW, house is up for sale here in Florida & will be moving back to the Grand Strand as soon as it sells. Hopefully I won't need to bring a golf club to the beach this time around, LOL.

I'm sorry that I did not make that clear. The jetty is South Carolina.   Glad to hear you are coming back Lindros.   There is some new signage and it better demarcates the NC Reserve portion on the inlet side of the Island.   There seems to be a substantial beach that I thought was in SC that is really NC.  You might not recognize the beach.  There has been some chopping away at the dunes, leaving a 3-4 foot sand cliff.   If you want more info send me a pm.

There are a few areas on Jordan that are "unofficial" beaches that you can thong on. However, there are a few occasional people brazenly walking around nude that may stir up trouble causing reports to be made to rangers. The rangers have been patrolling on foot in one of the places I have tried this season. As long as you are at least "thonged" they do not seem to bother you.

So apparently the only official beaches you can access if you're not actively camping at Jordan Lake are the Ebenezer Church and Seaforth areas.  I'm at Ebeneezer Church right now and there is absolutely nobody here. Of course it's also 5 o'clock so the day is over for most people I guess.  Regardless, I'll be here for a couple hours and then head home. Nice and quiet to do some reading while I sun my buns.
EDIT: So, about a half dozen other people showed up to go swimming between 6-7, along with a woman jogging/walking with her two dogs.  Nobody commented or seemed to mind at all and just went about their business.
