On a recent UK TV holiday programme there was a wonderful comment about the girls thongs on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro: "never have so many worn so little". In the beach shots shown however all the men seemed to be wearing standard size trunks. Does anybody have experience here?

Yes, unfortunately it is true...I went to Rio in January 2001 and found it not thong-friendly for when...No worries, I was not going to let that stop me in 100 degree weather and my first time thonging....10AM, just three hours after getting off the plane in paradise, I was at the top-floor pool sunning my buns in a DEEJAY thong...Too much fun...On the beach I got laughs and people pointing, but of course my lovely friend of college could not contain herself. While pointing at her own thong, she grabbed my side strap and snapped it for a curious group....I say just go for it!!!! The weather is amazing!

I was in Rio de Janeiro March of 2003 and in seven days I was the only man wearing a thong, compared to 80% of all women of all ages. The only looks I  got was from the locals, but I did not let it bother me.  Women can wear dental floss front and back but the men(locals) wear form fitting speedos. The ladies I entertained explained to me that if a man wears a thong in Rio he is considered gay or a tourist.  I have no problem being a tourist. If  can wear my thong amonst the rednecks in galveston, Rio is a piece of cake. When I go back to Rio, I will be in my thong every day.

I was in Rio and as the other guys said, I was the only guy in a thong. So I got a lot of attention and it was fun anyway. I am surprised, as the others say, that thonging for women is wide acceptable but not even thought for men.

At least in Rio the men wear speedos. How many other places do men wear speedos? It is usually long baggy shorts. So give it time and I am pretty sure we will be catching the women up in the number of thongs being worn.

I'm planning on visiting Rio de Janeiro this September and in preparation for the trip, I've been doing a bit of Internet research. One site I found, www.ipanema.com, is produced by someone who claims to have been born and raised in Rio. In the section about beaches, the author talks about appropriate beachwear for men and women. The author says men should wear Speedo-style swimsuits but not thongs. The phrase used was something like, "not even gay men find thongs attractive." My first thought was disbelief. I thought that in Rio, pretty much anything goes. I've seen plenty of pictures of women in thongs, and just figured that men wore them too. My second thought was that this author simply equates thongs with gay men and doesn't like gay men. So, my question is, who on this board has been to Rio? And what was your experience?

Rio is a very "Macho" based culture. All of Brasil is. The typical Brasilian woman finds the typical American or European man "too soft", feminine, not macho. They like a man whose a man...a brute. They expect a hard come-on, will shoot you down quick but expect you to not be discouraged by their rejection. If you persist (and they already like you) you may have a chance. Of course one of their "boyfriends" may show up and shove you hard. (A lot of Brasilian men are quite big and imposing, like to fight/bully Americans). That being said Brasilian people are also very warm and welcoming. They're like Italians, the love you or hate you.
OK, what about thongs?
Women are very, well, you've seen them: very womanly. They like to show off. Brasil is the plastic surgery capital of the world. Rio is a parade of beautiful people. They (Brasilian women, but men too) like to show off and they like to be looked at. The *ss is sexual but in a weird Catholic sort of way the nipples are "maternal" and will generally not exposed them. It's offensive to do so in fact. Brasilian women, like women everywhere, love a man's face, broad shoulders, flat stomach, firm legs and yes, even (and specially) a perky butt. However, because the very divided world of what is masculine and what is feminine (and thongs belonging to the "feminine" side) VERY few men wear thongs in Rio. You can, it's not illegal, you'll get lots of looks, but you won't be "popular". You shouldn't get harrazed but some may whistle in jest (as they whistle to passing girls).
Brasilian women expect their men to be men and men wear speedos or board shorts. They don't know what to make of men in thongs. But then again, unless you're in Greece, most of the world doesn't know what to make of men in thongs either!

I'm just back from Rio. Half brasilian. Didn't see any men in thongs and the least I could wear was 1 inch speedos which were still considered a bit gay! Womens bikinis are still tiny. Don't wear a thong as you will be looked upon with great suspicion. Men just don't wear anything less than a 3 inch speedo and normaly tight brief shorts. I don't know what the general feeling is among women as regards men's swimwear but my female cousin says that small swimwear on men is not nice...shame...there are sometimes thongs among the gays on Copacabana beach in front of the Copacabana Palace hotel. but generally none on men elsewhere...In September the weather is just warming up so don't expect high temperatures. March was superb, generally about 35 degs daily..have fun!

I have been to Rio twice (2002 and 2004). Roninho and Armand are entirely correct. I liked the comment about the nipple (on women). I was at a bar on Av. Atlantica with a woman I had met and two of her friends. We were talking about Brazilians' ethnic origin and she said that she was part Indian (native people), which surprised me from her appearance. To prove it she flashed me her nipple, which was large, as is supposed to be the case for Indians. This was very risque behavior, even though the women all around are wearing super provocative clothing, had been on the beach all day in thongs, etc.

My second visit was in their winter and the beaches were empty, but the first was in late summer (March) and there were a couple of days that the beaches were packed. I did not see a single man in a thong, even in the gay areas (indicated by rainbow flags). As a result, I did not wear one. Just enjoy the women (if you are straight, and even if you are not: the human form in many types, mostly beautiful).

4th trip to rio de janeiro in 2/06. Lots of thongs on females. Around 75%. Bravely, I was the only male in a thong as usual.  Not many looks and not a word said. I went alone and was barely noticed. Though the women like it (if you know what I mean). Try copacabana beach as it is very liberated and topless abounds.

If you're not able to get to Brazil this summer here's a video to make you want to go.

There'll be a quiz at the end.

Q: pick out the girl NOT wearing a thong or rio suit.... answer below don't peek until you've seen it

http://youtube.com/watch?v=isG5p8vSQp8

A: check out the girl in the red top at 00:29, she's not wearing her bottom---trying to tan off that sharp tanline.  She's covering up with a shirt between her legs!

Sadly, this video has been removed due to "terms of use violation", whatever that means.

Sharp tan lines (lineas de bronzada) are a source of pride for Brazilian girls and a turn on for Brazilian men (and for me too).

I have tried thonging in Rio and for a man I would say it was negative. I got a lot of giggling and I think they thought I was trying to be female. I didn't feel comfortable on the beaches their. It is such a macho culture and the girls arse is so worshipped, I think it was very strange for them to see a man in a thong

cm..I could have told you this, man. Being half Brasilian I spend quite a lot of time in Rio where most of my relatives stay. I usually wear 1 inch side bikinis, such as a Dore or Waveline and even then I get some 'looks', so the question of wearing a thong was never needed. The attitude of Brasilians is definitely that women wear the micro bikinis and men wear 'large' speedo style. Thanks fully they haven't got into the stupid fashion of the huge shorts, although they ARE seen on the beaches. There is a 'nude' beach south of Barra da Tijuca beach on which I would imagine you'd probably be able to wear thongs though I haven't been there yet.

I have a relative who's been spending time down in Rio on and off in the past year, and she brought me back some typical men's suits from there as a gift.  The funny thing is, they seem huge in terms of the amount of fabric but they show WAY more of my man-bits in front my typical thong suit.  They're lined, but they're kind of flat in front and everything is pretty much on display whether you want it to be or not.  Kind of ironic, as I feel more exposed wearing one of them than most of my thongs or speedos.

Re:Rio de Janeiro

Flnkdguy, sounds like in Brasil you've got to display your man-bits to prove your masculinity, while displaying a bare butt leaves your sexual orientation in question.  Amazing, and sad.  That man-bit display strikes me as a bit gross, while a bare butt can be a very attractive and decent part of a person's anatomy, for both males and females, which makes a thong the perfect way to go.  Glad some societies are more open minded in their tolerance, if not embrace, of our wearing our thongs with pride, and I'm talking about right here in the good old USA, with JM leading our charge!

Re:Rio de Janeiro

Guys, not only do the men's suits 'show' what you've got, the men seem to subconciously emphasise this by occasionally touching themselves. I suppose it's some sort of inbuilt attention seeking device for directing any watching female's gaze in that direction. Sorry dude, this question of intolerance of masculine swimwear aside, but I wouldn't swap Brasil for your country on any day. The thing is, you can always go to one of the many naturists beaches or deserted beaches in the country to wear your thongs. The country has many miles of gorgeous beaches, many of which are deserted.

Hi Roninho...definitely not knocking Brazil!  It sounds like a wonderful place.  I just thought it was ironic that the mens suits I have from there contain more fabric that any conservative speedo that I'd normally wear, yet they show every detail of my man-tackle to the point that I might as well be naked.   I'd definitely feel less naked wearing a thong, for sure.

Lived part time off and on for years in RJ province. The culture does not approve of men in extreme styles of any kind in public. It should be kept to private residences/pools or to deserted beaches. Brazil is speedos or boardshorts. Also, they have beautiful shorts too but they are quite pricey though well worth it for the stares when you get back.

I would also add to my previous comments, there weren't nearly so many women wearing thongs there as the stero type would suggest. The bulk were wearing Rios. No one wears Fio Dentals any more. I saw more extreme swimwear in Miami this summer

Just back again fron Rio. Weather was awful so only had a couple of days on the Copa. Women's swimwear is varied with fio dentals (dental floss) bikinis still evident though men's seem to be getting wider!! about 3-4 inches. On a happy note my fiance bought herself a tiny white string side bikini bottom as she thought her other ones were digging in! I love them!!

Some guys wear them but get laughed at so you have to be quite thick skinned to do so. Also there's the 'gay' tag unless you hang about the relevant Posto on Ipanema beach where the gay community frequent. I've worn 1 inch bikinis and had some looks but would be acceptable.

I dated a Brazilian lass for a couple of years, and although she loved me in thongs ( one of the few GF's I've had that did!!!) and bought me many, when we went to Rio she bought me square cuts for the beach, I was glad she did!! Rio, for a man, is not the place to be seen on the main beaches in a thong! Women, hell yes, not much else!!! you will be laughed and pointed at for sure, go to the gay beach or as i did, find a private hotel pool and you should be fine.

I just wanted to relate an experience that I just had in Rio.  I was at Ipanema beach in Rio and was wearing a very small Rio back and thin front 1/2 inch string.  It was by far the smallest suit suit for a man on the beach.  I got to the beach at about 10 am on Friday and there were not a lot of people there.  Found a spot not too near anyone else.  Laid out on the beach and after a while a number of other beach goers were all around me, mostly very attractive young women, mostly in thongs.  It was a very comfortable feeling and I did not feel out of place at all.  I kicked myself for not wearing a thong, but had been deterred by stories of how odd it would be for a man to be wearing a thong in Brazil.  Next time I will definitely bring my thong and wear it without concern.

Was wondering what the thong situation was outside of the Rio beaches? I know if my wife & I go to Rio, that she can wear a thong all day long - but (at least in Rio) the situation is different for guys - so I'd have to wear a regular bikini.
But what about other beaches? Could I go to a less populated beach outside of Rio & get away with wearing a thong?
Like one of the other posts mentioned, they'll either think you're gay (which I'm not) or a tourist (which I would be) - so why not just wear a thong & not worry about it? I think it's a shame that all the women can wear as little as they want, but the guys can't - guess it's just like anywhere else.

I am staying at the Hotel Windsor Asturias in Rio (Cinelandia area). I was wearing my Skinz g-string (M1RU) at the small rooftop pool (very nice view of the city) and the barman came out (the bar is adjacent, inside the building) and told me (in Portuguese) that I could not wear a suit like that because of children. I was alone and I have not seen any children at the hotel. This is the exact sort of thing that I might have expected in the USA. I don't thong on the beach in Rio because that really not done, as described in other messages in this thread. I don't know what a (male) thong friendly hotel in Rio is, but probably a very expensive one (I did at the Golden Tulip in Sao Conrado, which is European owned, and has a very large pool, but the location is very far from the main areas of Rio, although close to where the Olympics will be.

Does anyone know of anyplace in Brazil where people are ok with men wearing thongs? If I was to go to another less populated beach somewhere other than Rio, would people be OK with seeing a man in a thong?I find it sad that in a country where the majority of women wear thongs and it is widely accepted - that a man wearing one is simply not tolerated. I would've thought that Rio would be the one place on earth where people were pretty open minded about it.I would love to go to Rio and walk the beaches with my wife while we're both wearing thongs. At least I can still wear a Speedo there, I guess.I tell you - being a guy really sucks sometimes. Why can't we have the same freedoms as women?

I'm brazilian and unfortunately thongs are not well accepted in men here. Speedos are totally ok. If you want to wear a thong you must look for a less populated beach and feel the vibe or take a chance in Rio beaches, expect giggles and finger pointings.

Excellent point Gra, they do not do topless there for females!

However, I would suggest thonging by anyone is certainly not illegal, therefore you can thong depending on how thick your skin is.
After watching a few youtube vids on Rio beaches, I would be unable to wear anything more than a thong, and would put up with any stares or comments. How could you spend the day on a beach like that with all of those females around you and NOT wear a thong yourself? Not me.

Confidence would be the key.

I wore a Skinz g-string at the hotel pool (a small one) at the Windsor Guanabara in Centro (this was during Carnaval week, when the weather was ideal). I had no problems but would not wear one at a crowded beach such as Copacabana, Ipanema/Leblon, or Barra de Tijuca (the last of these is best for women in thongs - more upscale crowd with fewer tourists).

I just got back from a week long work trip to Rio where I stayed near the Barra da Tijuca area. I thonged on the beach nearly every day and had no issues, no comments, no looks. I was the only male in a thong while 99% of females were in thongs, but it was just relaxing. Even the beach vendors stopped at me to sell and treated me no different. My spot was near lifeguard tower 8 (or Posto 8). There was a Cityfarma Praia da Barra 24h in the median of the road, next to a gas station. 10/10 would return.
