@JM_Runs
Well you are a runner! It's not like you are a weightlifter or road cyclist.
A little off topic, but you do notice that the runners especially middle distance and long distance runners have very thin legs. Muscular legs are not an efficient basis for long distance running, especially when the constant impact that running causes.

Re:Short Shorts

@bbyrne Mid and long distance runners tend to lack muscle in general.  The reason is that your body is eating itself for fuel. Glycogen stores tend to get used up in 30 minutes, after that your body has to consume tissue to keep up.  Fat does not convert to fuel quick enough for any form of exercise - its a misconception that exercise burns fat; what's really happening is exercise can raise your metabolic rate such that your at-rest rate is higher.  Short, high intensity sprints are a LOT better for health for this reason - they exhaust glycogen and stimulate the metabolism but fall short of needing to break down tissue for energy.  Take an Olympic sprinter and a world class marathon runner, strip them naked, and tell me which one looks healthier.  The marathon runner will look like they just got out of concentration camp, the sprinter will be built and lean.
Not saying you shouldn't run if you enjoy it, by all means run if you like it.  But if fitness is your goal, you'll look a hella lot better by doing high intensity, short duration work than you will from jogging/running for hours.  I've been doing hill starts on my non-gym days and the results have been incredible.  You just run up a hill as fast as possible for 15 seconds, take 60 seconds to walk down/rest, then repeat until 20 minutes have gone by.

Wearsthongs - Your information is useful and informative for most of us, but for bbyrne76 it is like teching your grandmother to suck eggs. (If expression does not translate in your part of the world just google it.)  However for the reset of us it is good advice.  Thanks.

Re:Short Shorts

My cycling Knicks are made by Assos. They are anatomically designed to work with women and fit me like nothing else. My only gripe is the European leg length which means my cyclist tanline stops about four inches from my knee. American branded cycling apparel have the legs finishing about five to six inches above the knee. The American style looks great off the bike, but on the bike, you want a little bit more protection from the saddle rubbing against your legs and also makes it slightly easier to stash and access gels in the legs because the gels will be closer to your hands when they are on the bars. The ideal length is about 4.5 to 5 inches, above the knee.
There should be an international standard for knick length, it would stop newbies getting hassled when going for a shop or club ride from the "Capos" of the bunch.
@wearsthongs - don't worry about it, as JM_Runs says there are a bunch of folks on this board who are into this stuff and your insights are appreciated.

Good news.  I am seeing shorts get shorter at branded chain stores.  I saw 5" mens shorts at JCrew and Brooks Brothers.  I am looking forward to them selling 3" ones soon.

We just spent a week at Orient beach in St Martin. There were quite a number of men in shorts with about a 3" inseam. This was at teh beach and on the street.I found 3 pairs to buy in the little shops in the Orient village, reasonably priced too.It was nice to see the trend toward shorter shorts.

Now this is a proper short shorts: http://www.betterbodies.se/products/better-bodies-right-now/short-tights-black/  Bought a pair last week and wore it for a training session, with a thong underneath of course. It's not see through for those who wondered. Perfect for showing off them legs! Turned some heads, but since I'm way above average strong and muscular I got a lot of positive feedback from the ladies at the gym. And my training partners were impressed that I managed to pull it off.

This one is hard for me. my parents had me and my brothers in speedos when we were little, so in my head when i go to the beach and strip down to a suit that covers most of my butt, its totally normal for me. but if a guy walks around with shorts even an inch above his knee, oh my gosh! i tried buyin women's shorts from walmart but they all make me look like a woman. hard to find comfortable airy short masculing shorts.

"hard to find comfortable airy short masculing shorts"

I suggest you stop by a running store, like a Sports Authority.  Nylon running shorts are plenty short, and plenty masculine.  I've got lots of them acquired over the years, and some have high-split sides.  Most come with liners, but I cut them out and wear mesh g-strings instead, so they're very airy and comfortable.

Thanks i will. i'm very particular on this one. i've noticed sexy women looking me up and down when my shorts are a couple inches above my knee. but if they're halfway up my quad muiscle or more i get too many looks i dont like. i like to walk around flying under the radar, scanning the women checking me out. makes running errands more fun.

Shorts are definitely shorter this year.  I have seen several guys at our country club pool who are wearing loose trunks that are several inches above the knee.  This is a good trend.  Retail stores are also selling much shorter swim trunks as mainstream this year.  Nice to see this.  Like dooby says, there is a fine line where you can go an be safe (almost anywhere).  Once they get too short however...you run the risk of getting those "Looks".

Re:Short Shorts

There are some shorts on Amazon.com that are pretty great. They are cheap and fit wonderfully:
http://www.amazon.com/Soffe-Juniors-Teeny-Short-Medium/dp/B0011FTLRG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1373454747&sr=8-2&keywords=short+shorts

I wear the x-large when I want a loose fit look - more like men's shorts than what is pictured.
When I want tighter and sexier, I wear the mediums, and they hug everything pretty tightly!

Buy a couple of pairs in different sizes and colors and see what I mean...

Also, the white ones are kinda see through, especially when wet.

I had just finished my yoga at the house and had made a french press of coffee. I was only wearing a pair of cotton/lycra excercise shorts that have about a 5" inseam, a friend called and I walked outside to the fairly secluded front porch to have a coffee, while I sit and chat with my friend. The legs of shorts tend to ride up during yoga, so they were more like square cuts when I walked outside. After a while a woman delivered the mail and I stood up to get the mail from her. She looked right at my shorts, smiled and still smiling looked my face then handed me the mail,  as I was still chatting away on the cell phone. I took the mail and walked back inside to set the mail down. As I passed the full length mirror I looked to see what the mail lady was smiling at. The shorts had ridden up so high that the lower hems of the legs were above the bottom my bulge. "Yikes!" I thought, and pulled down the lower hem of the legs my shorts.
I walk back outside, grab the coffee cup, and go back inside for a refill, all the while still chatting away. After the refill I head back to the porch and looking over the side porch wall, here comes the mail lady down the other side street. As she gets right to point on the sidewalk where you can look right onto the porch she turns to look at me.  Still on the celly with my friend, I hoist my coffee in the universal sign of "Cheers!" she gets that big smile on her face and keeps on delivering the mail.

So i'm paying for a pair of short light weight adidas running shorts at sports authority, and i tell her they were on the "50% off" rack. she says, "the second pair is 50% off". so i go and get a second pair, and the total comes out to $56.00, for 2 pairs of shorts!! i took them back next day. over the weekend i found a very similar pair of adidas, and two pairs of speedo shorts (a bit longer) they were 4.00 each! gotta love the thrift shops.

When you look at the womens shorts that are available, they aren't any different than men's shorts.   I see no reason why we shouldn't be buying in the women's department.   I have purchased several short shorts that are available in the women's section.     Guys, I am old enough to remember when short shorts were IN and when they were OUT of style.   Many years ago they promoted short shorts for women and they called them "Hot Pants".   Within a year or two "Hot Pants" became popular for men.   I had two pair that even had belt loops on them.  No one thought a thing about men and women wearing them.   They were in style and totally acceptable.   Styles simply come and go over the years.   For those of you old enough to remember, we had Jams or Surfer Shorts that came into style many years ago.   This was a "look" to reflect the surfer culture from California.   After that, we had the bikinis, which were totally acceptable and popular.    Men's thongs then came along only after they were popular with women.   I believe that men's styles simply follow the current trend being worn by women.    Yes, bikini's for women are getting smaller and smaller.   Men's swimwear will follow the trend and get smaller and smaller too.    Shorts for men will follow the current trend being worn by women.   Yes, they are very short and we too will soon have them!   Before long, more women will be wearing thongs and then you will see that trend happening for men too!    Things have to continually change in order for the retail market to make money.    Just hold on.......short shorts, skimpy bikinis and thongs are on the horizon for us guys too, and they will be a common and acceptable thing to wear!  We will not be the exception as to what is being worn.    We just have to patient and wait for it to happen!

Well guys, I figure why wait for the styles to change.  The best thing to do is wear 'em short if you want to.  Then society can decide if they do, or don't like it.  I spent the weekend in Dallas.  It was 103 degrees on Saturday.  I wore my Bodyaware Neon Brights (high cut sides with micro mesh holes) into a few Dollar General stores, gas stations and finally Walmart at 6 p.m. in the evening.  It was packed with people.  In Dollar General, a lady in line behind asked "how many miles do you run everyday".  She told her daughter that "he can dress like that cause he's got the body for it".  I then spent an hour in Walmart, all over the store.  I never heard a comment until I was leaving the store, when a group of guys in a pack decided to laugh out loud.  Their choice, no problem.  They had long pants and tee shirts on, and were sitting under an air conditioning vent.
I put a few pics from the trip in my "Dallas Walmart" image file.  I highly recommend the Neon Brights.

As mentioned above, the Soffe teeny tiny shorts for juniors are perfect.  Select the same size you normally wear.  I usually wear a mens large, sometimes medium.  The large size in these shorts fits me perfectly.  I remove the label sewn on the back of the waist band before wearing.

I just got the large in orange for my 34" waist.  Fits perfectly.  I generally wear bermudas around town, sometimes longish navy nylon shorts.  Wouldn't wear these Soffe's, but will take to SunSplash, should be perfect between the hotel and beach, over my orange thongs and strings.

I have to admit, with the popularity of short shorts for girls this summer - I'm seeing them everywhere, including a fair share of the so-called 'underbutts' - I'm quite jealous, especially with the heat wave we've had here in the UK. Thing is, I can't find where they're buying them!

I may have found a new favorite short shorts to wear running aside from the RRS 5" compression I mentioned above. The Nike Core 2.5" is technically a women's short but it fits me perfectly. It's thin, non-transparent spandex so it feels and looks great for a hot, sweaty workout. I have it in black but there are many other colors. They fit nice and tight but my thong is hardly visible at all. Dare I get the white ones next?

I bought some BOA split shorts with 1" inseam.  Have used them three times in this very conservative Midwest neighborhood.  No one said a word, in fact no one really even seemed to notice.  After all, I am just running by, so there isn't really a lot of time to look and comment anyway.  After the second day, I realized that the shorts really are a non-issue.  These are extremely comfortable and a whole lot cooler than the long cotton shorts I have been wearing.  The material is very thin and breezy.  Maybe I wouldn't wear them for casual wear in Wal-Mart but they are not intended for that anyway.

I'm looking for some really short white swim/base-layer shorts, (don't really want the cheeky shorts style, looking for a really short pair of square cuts) to use as a cover up on an up coming holiday. Sadly the pair I have are a little past it and I just can't seem to find a replacement pair. I got my original pair off eBay but can longer find the seller.
It seems that all of the mens styles out there are long legged which I do not want, I am looking for a really short legged pair, if anyone has any experience of this style and can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I'm not to worried if they are a ladies style just as long as they fit well, as I say they will be a coverup, so I'll have some form of thong on underneath, so the fact they are not pouched up front doesn't bother me, if I can find a short male version with room up front so much the better.

I don't have any suggestions that are as inexpensive as you might find on eBay, but I have a couple suggestions to check out.  Most of the suits I've seen that have a short or no inseam are also very low cut, which won't come up high enough to cover a lot of thongs.

Skinzwear: http://skinzwear.com/prod_Group.php?indexcat=1004&indexname=Boxer-Swimsuits-for-Men

Bodyaware: https://bodyaware.com/gallery/view/swimwear/swim-shorts I haven't checked them all, but they have at least these in white: https://bodyaware.com/product/view/glistening-swim-short-q001b or https://bodyaware.com/product/view/the-volleyball-short-clearance-q026

I wear swimsuits from Aussiebum, which I've found to be good quality.  I think the 70's style might be the only one that isn't as low cut as the others.  I have a couple of the Aussiebum League, without the number (can be ordered with or without), and that is usually available in white.  It is low cut and double lined though. http://www.aussiebum.com/swimwear
