What a great day to be on south beach. The weather cooperated for most of the day and the crowds I was expecting never showed, as is usually the case on a holiday weekend. There was no storm damage that I could see. Hard to believe a hurricane passed through a week ago.

On my way to another great day on the beach.

I was there Saturday, and there was a LOT more thongs/topless than last time, I'd say 75% were topless, and 50% wearing thongs, I only saw 2 wearing gstrings (apart from me) one was rather old, and one other was about my age, and I'd have to say she had a near perfect body ! I thought she was nude at first because her g string was so tiny and she was topless, there was a guy standing by a food shack taking pictures of her, I wonder where I could find these pics

RE: eimeo's post,

Summer time, when the locals are out on the weekend...

Shame that idiots have to stand around and stare or stalk people with their cameras. I think a lot more women would be comfortable in topless and in thongs if the jerks would just go else where.

Note to tourists: If the wether is perfect the locals come out. If not, they won't be on the beach.

Locals are not zoo animals and we don't have feeding time. But, if you hit it right, the right time and the right day, the view can be breathtaking.

In the midle of the summer it too hot and sticky. Locals get out early before it gets too hot, and are often off the beach before the tourist is out of bed. Spring and late fall are probably the best times (except spring break). Most times the mid to late mornings are best. By mid afternoon the ratio changes: Most girls are off the beach and the dork short boys take over.

Wether has a lot to do with it. If you are a tourist you are stuck with the wether of your week. But if the wether is not perfect, not to hot, not to cold, not to still and humid, us locals may just be at the mall instead.

This has to be my favorite time of the year to visit south beach. The tourist have started to leave and the spring breakers are on there way back north. Looking foward to spending as much time as possible on my favorite beach, and I hope to see many more thongers than in the past. Lets switch the trend away from shorts and have a good showing of thongs on the beach.

Sounds good to me. My g/f and I got a trip booked for SoBe in mid-May. I know she is ready for the topless thonged experience and I can't wait to hit the beach in a thong with her. We are planning on at least one day at Haulover. Going full nude legally has got to be great.

Hope that you really enjoy your stay. I live here (South Beach) and have found it to be the best beach I have seen for thonging and topless. Haulover is a great nude beach, but about 10 miles north.

South Beach can be a bit overwhelming, however, as it is always crowded. You might try somewhat north if you want a smaller crowd. For a truly beautiful, quiet beach, try Key Biscayne  Whenever I have to go to the mainland for a meeting and have the afternoon off, I go there as I hate the afternoon parking problem in South Beach.

I have not found any beach in the South Florida area where women or men in thongs are not welcome. Grab a map and have fun!

I'm thinking about heading down to SoBe either this weekend or next weekend. Looks like it's going to be 87 and partly sunny (according to accuweather) on saturday, anyone know if that'll make for a good day? I've never been to SoBe, where's a good place to setup? I don't mind a crowd, as long as I know thongs are tolerated. I'd like to go where there will be other thongs, mix of women and/or men. I think I'll probably rent one of those beach chairs I've read about. So is near 9th street good for this?

Any day there isn't a storm is a good day on SoBe. Saturday should be great.  9th street is fine, as well as anywhere from 2nd st to north of 23. There are no beaches in the S. Fla. area where thongs are shunned. The area around 12th street is primarily gay, but the rest is a good mixture of men and women. Just relax and have fun.

I have seen more people in thongs in the area north of 23rd st. Maybe because its a lot more locals and less tourists. Only problem is parking is difficult to find.

Re:South Beach, Beach Miami, Florida FL. ( SoBe )

Date Posted:04/09/2006 12:46:06Copy HTML

I made it out to South Beach yesterday, and all I can say is "wow." I'd be there every weekend, if it wasn't for the 3 hour drive. So I got up and left my house at 7:30am, and was parked in south beach at around 10:30. I found a spot right off Ocean drive on 9th street. I walked to the beach and it wasn't very crowded, so I decided to go up to the 23rd street area. I got back in the car and gave up my spot (BIG MISTAKE) and parked in a parking lot around 20th street. I then went out to the beach and stripped to my red skinz M25 thong. I only had enough change for 45 minutes in the meter, so I spent the next hour or so trying to find one of the park and pay receipt things - I walked out near ocean drive in just my thong about 3 times trying to find one, and along the boardwalk from 20th to 23rd street!

So I laid out for about another 15-30 minutes, and I got antsy to explore. The beach was starting to get very crowded also. I got up and started walking. I walked along the shore line all the way from my spot around 20th street to the pier at the end of 1st street! I turned around and walked back along the backside or between the chairs. I only got one real negative comment, some jackass in board shorts said "hey why don't you put some clothes on?" to which I didn't respond. Around 4th street there were 4, 20 something guys in those short-cut speedo shorts (which I really like, I need a pair of them) playing volleyball and they were really cool and told me keep it up! They also asked if I wanted to play, but I was worried about my stuff laying open about 2 miles away. I knew I'd regret that move, and I wish now that I had played a round. That would have made for a fun report - anyone else played vollyball in a thong on SoBe?? Otherwise there were some hoots and hollers, and a couple times I heard girls giggling behind me. Overall the walk ended up taking almost 2 hours...all in my thong holding my keys and a bottle of water. That was exhilerating. I think the only noticably negative thing I could see was that there usually were not people walking behind me along the water's edge. There were tons of people walking, but when I would pass someone, and look back about 30 seconds later, they had moved up onto the rest of the beach. That's alright though, tolerance doesn't mean you have to like something - and at least I'm tolerated there (unlike some other beaches in Florida).

I said giving up my spot on 9th street was a big mistake because I was paying attention to "scenery" during my walk. 1st and 2nd streets are a good mix of 20 somethings with a good number of girls in thongs. 3-6 street seems to be families. 7-11 has a younger crowd, with plent of thongs. 12 street - gay area. 13-18 street had sporatic thongs sightings, mainly the older people. I would say about 15% of the girls were in thongs, and only about 5-10% were topless. Oddly enough, very few were topless in a thong, just a handfull across the beach. I would have thought if the girls like thongs, they'd like topless, but I guess that's not a given. I saw a grand total of 3 other guys in thongs, one in the gay area, one around 9th street, and the other up near 23rd street. None of them were up walking around - but that's probably not their thing and that's cool with me.

When I got back to my stuff, I laid out some more - then decided I wanted to see if those guys were still playing volleyball. I got in the car, gave up my spot (again) and drove down to 3rd street - it was around 3:30 at this point, and I spent the next hour looking for a spot. I didn't want to spend $20 on a parking lot since I had time left on my pay and park receipt. I finally found a spot off alton street over a mile from the beach, and I was lucky to get that! Parking in SoBe is horrendous, get there early and don't give up your spot!!! So they weren't playing volleyball, but I still laid out a little longer. I left around 5:30, and walked back to my car in my thong with a transparent, thigh-length, orange sarong. I was so happy that I got to spend an unninterrupted 6 hours in my thong that I drove the 3 hours home in my thong and sarong. Aside from truckers, peole in cars can't really see what you're wearing below anyway.

Alas - I didn't do the best on my sun screen management, and I got a slight sunburn on my back. It's a slight burn, and won't peel, so it'll turn tan in a couple days - of course I'm probably going to get skin cancer now in 10 years. Even with the 3 hour ride, sunburn, parking situation, it was my best thong experience ever!

Got my spring vacation planned to South Beach for mid May. My girlfriend and I are staying around 5th and Collins, close to the beach, for 5 nights. Got our fingers crossed for good weather so we can do plenty of thonging, sight-seeing and a lil partying. She has two new Malibu Strings thong bikinis to sport and I plan on wearing new suits from Ergowear and Skinz. We are both hoping that she will be comfortable to go topless and I would like to feel free enough to wear just a thong instead of a bikini. We plan on visiting Haulover once as well along with a day trip to the upper Keys. I'd like to take a reef snorkeling tour where she can wear her thong and I, a bikini. Not sure if this is doable? Any trip suggestions from fellow thongers?

As I am sure you have gathered from the postings on this topic, your girlfriend will certainly not be alone topless in a thong and you should feel comfortable in a thong or even a very brief g-string. I wear a very brief Dore adjustable string on South Beach regularly with no problems.

I am sure that you can wear your skimpy suits in the keys as well. I have worn a thong on most of the beaches along the keys (surprisingly few) with no problems.

Thanks for the response. As the date gets closer, we get more excited. I went ahead and bought my first Dore suit just in case I get brave. I've steadily gone to skimpier and skimpier suits over the years so figured I might out do myself again this spring.

We got back from SoBe earlier this week after 5 full days of sun and fun on the beach. What a blast! I mostly wore a bikini with 1/2 sides and a small half back but I felt completely comfortable and confident to walk around, down the beach and taking swims. I saw lots of other men in Speedo like suits but none any smaller than mine. Two of the days we were were there, I did wear a thong and that went well as well - I just got a bit too much sun on my buns which is why I switched back to the bikini. I didn't catch any views of guys in thongs but we didn't cruise the beach much; instead mostly remaining around 4th - 6th St and the pools at our hotel. My g/f wore thongs everyday and went topless most of the time. One of her thongs was fully transparent but again; no problems. I saw many, many women in thongs and topless. Ironically though; not too many who did both. My g/f and half a dozen others were the only ones I saw. I had hoped to see more ladies in Wicked Weasel or Malibu Strings like my g/f but oh well - she is as sexy as anyone out there and all I needed to be seeing anyways. All in all, SoBe is a great spot for wearing anything you dare to wear. I can't wait to go back.

I've been to South Beach twice, both times I've been up several times at dawn to run 6 - 10 miles on the beach in one of my thongs. In both cases, I've had no trouble from law enforcement, since thongs are perfectly legal there, just a few comments, both positive and negative, from several women. I am a 34 year old straight male triathlete and I have 25" thighs full of muscle, so I like to train in thongs or briefs whenever I get the chance.

More often than not, I bike or run in speedo-style triathlon briefs, which to my knowledge, are legal everywhere, maybe with the exception of a few random hole-in-the wall small towns with their own antiquated ordinances. The only issue is avoiding troublemakers. Back home, in east TN, I have to be vary careful about these things. Everywhere I go, I find the trick to avoid troublemakers is to get up early and train (swim, bike or run) and/or go off-road with it. Last trip, I rode 22 miles on the road and ran 7 (6 on the beach, 1 on the road) early Sunday morning in Clearwater with no trouble from anyone. I'm sure that had much to do with the time of day -- vehicle traffic was light and many were out riding bikes and running, but I didn't see anyone else with the same attire as me. I've done the same sorts of things in the Keys and Daytona with little trouble.

I almost forgot...I also did some runs while in SoBe last week. Our last day there was the hottest. I ran about 7 miles on the beach in my tight black lycra shorts with a thong underneath. My g/f said my thong was very visible which was fun to show off too.

Anybody been to South Beach in the last two months?  I can't believe with all the people reading this board, no one has posted their experiences since late May.  I haven't been there in a couple years, but the urge to thong is getting overwhelming, and I'm thinking about making a short couple day trip to the beach.  Anyone else got any current information?

I was in south beach today...returned home a few hours ago.  Althought it rained some every day I was there, there was still ample sun.  Topless women in thongs -hardly. In g-strings? nonexistant. men in thongs? just one I saw in five days.  I dont know if its the weather, time of year or what, but south beach does not seem to be the hotspot anymore.  There are still some good sights, but as ive mentioned here before, sobe is not what it used to be even a few years ago.  Does anyone agree? I love the area but I think I might try a differant beach next time.  Any suggestions?

Re:South Beach, Beach Miami, Florida FL. ( SoBe )

There are a number of factors that affect the people you see on the beach.

The most obvious factors are what part of the beach you go to, at what time of day, and the time of year, and the weather on the day, and the wether forecast brordcast the night before.

I think you have missed another important point, locals have access to the beach year round, and mostly only go when the weather is ?good to perfect'. The wether this last week was poor to terrible, with a tropical wave pushed up from Mexico. We have had lots of thunderstorms and lots of rain.

I did my normal runs on the beach and I was drenched two out of three days this last week. (Wearing a hat keeps the rain out of my eyes). That you did not see many local sun worshipers out in thongs during this last week is probably because the weather most days was crap. This morning was again overcast and windy,  cool for running.

Locals are not part of the Disney land staff. We don't have to be out on the beach for the entertainment of tourists. Most of the people you saw were probably tourists like you or kids out for summer.

This is the rainy session for South Florida. In the middle of summer it alternates between torrential rain and scalding sun. If the morning is clear then by around 10:00 am the beach sand is getting too hot to walk on. By 11am it will burn the soles of your feet.  If the day started clear, then the heat rising from the land will suck in clouds from the ocean, quickly clouding over developing into random thunderstorms. Not exactly prime beach conditions.

That said, for thoes willing to be flexible, there are good times to be had in the summer.  You just have to select your moment and it helps to be an early riser.  As a general rule, go to the beach soon after sun rise and stay till it rains.

I don't know what time you arrived at the beach.  If they go at all in the middle of summer, most locals go very early, spend an hour or two and soon split for some place shady or air conditioned, before it gets too hot.  If you arrived late in the morning you probably missed locals like my self.

This next week looks like more of the same, Saturday partly cloudy, and Thunderstorms for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Did I mention it's the rainy season?

Another factor, quite a few of the topless women who are normally on the beach in the summer time, are from Europe. The increase in the price of oil has resulted in the increase in air fairs, combined with the fact that many Europeans currently think that the US is populated by a bunch of wankers. So less topless euro women on the beaches.

I have a female friend who has to come here, because she flies for a european air line. She reports that none of her friends want to hit the beach these days. That's because they would rather exploit the fact that due to the US balance of payments deficit, they get two dollars for every pound. Therefore they head straight for the air conditioned discount shopping mall. Or to use her words "A US penny is currently worth fifty percent less than an Afghani." I thought she was joking, but I looked it up and she is right.

Just got back from a quick trip to Miami Beach, and I have to agree with Gstringing, that South Beach isn't what it used to be.  The beer belly, dork short crowd is definitely in the majority.  There were occasional women thongers, and I counted about six topless.  However, no other male thongers, with the possible exception of one guy lying on his back too far from me to tell.   I arrived at 8th Street about 5pm Monday and walked down to 6th, then all the way to 16th and back to 8th.  Very disappointing.  I was all prepared for thonging, but the atmosphere just didn't seem very appropriate.  So I left, and decided I would thong, regardless of the crowd, at the beach adjacent to my hotel.  I stayed at the Four Points Sheraton, about 42nd Street.   There were no other thongers there, but I decided to go for it.  So I did and went swimming until sunset.

On Tuesday morning, I got up early and was on the beach by 7:30.  Off came the shorts, and they stayed off until I had to leave about 9:45.  Again, no other thongers, but I did see a woman walk by with a loose wrap around skirt that was blowing in the wind, revealing her butt.  She was older and not particularly attractive.  No other thongers at the beach or the hotel pool.

Places change over time, and trends and fashions do also.  I think one of the reasons for fewer thongers, both men and women, is the increased incidence of skin cancer.  Intelligent, fit people, who used to sun worship, realize it's not wise.  While it certainly is fun and appealling, it can only be done in moderation, if at all.  Once you remove the idea of getting a tan, the idea of laying out all day at the beach no longer makes sense.  So.......gone are the masses of thongers from the beach.  A lot of people who take care of their bodies, and otherwise would like to show them off at the beach, are minimizing their time in the sun.

I guess I fall into the above category.  While I would love to spend days at the beach, I don't and can't.  However, I still love to thong, and do so every chance I get.  However, since my time at the beach is only a fraction of what it used to be, my guess is that a lot of others are doing the same.  That leaves only the rough crowd in their dork shorts.  Sad, but that's the way it is.  Too bad someone doesn't organize a 6pm thong party at the beach!

I was in SoBe last week and both my wife and I thonged in front of the Marriott, between 1st and 2nd streets. No male thongs except me, but a couple of women, particularly two gorgeous young ones topless as well. Found the atmosphere quite friendly though, while not much different from other beaches in Europe or in the States. But yes, for sure, as in Europe, board short is the rule. Though I find board short practical to kite surf or surf, I prefer thongs or nudity when it comes to sunbathing.

One overall comment on SoBe and some other beaches in Florida, I was quite surprised to see beer bellies and a majority of people (men and women) not really taking care of their global body shape. Though I am not the total muscle type of guy I would like, I find natural to keep fit and work out to feel great. It seems that the Men's Health (or Women's Health) type of guy is not the norm, even in sunny Miami... Probably because most of the people are too lazy to work out, or simply do not make the relation between exercises effort and health...

However, Miami is still Miami and thonging is not really an issue here. :-)

It sounds like SoBe isn't nearly the thonging haven it once was however, it seems one's experience would be heavily influenced by what part of the beach they are on, what time of year it is, what day of the week it is and who they are with. We were there, b/f and g/f, in mid-May and thonged daily. I noticed many women in thongs during the week (and topless) near our area who than wore regular bottoms Sat. and Sun. when the crowds came out. I didn't see any men in thongs other than myself but many in speedos or smaller bikinis. I didn't hear any negative comments directed towards myself - only a couple neutral comments about my thong or bikini wearing which I actually enjoyed.

Dennis:

The best solution to the skin cancer issue is to avoid the middle of the day hours, and, of course, use plenty of sun-screen.  I typically hit the beach as early as I can, and then take a 3 hour "lunch break" from 11 to 2 or 2:30.  Then I will be back out 'till as late as I can stay.  That minimizes exposure to the sun, but maximizes my beach time.  I also prefer to vacation in August or September (depending on location), rather than June or July, as the sun has retreated quite a bit by then from what it was near June 21, and the danger of sun burn/skin cancer is greatly reduced.

I was out with my wife last week on Saturday afternoon around 15th st. I counted 14 women in thongs, 3 men in thongs and 8 topless women in my general vicinity, within sight of my towel. This weekend we were also out and there were more topless than thongs, but over a dozen thongs in view.

I run on the beach in the morning frequently, sometimes north, sometimes south from 15th St. I rarely see more than a few topless or thongs on my runs. Most of the young, eurpoean types that are into topless and thongs are out in the afternoon. (Remember, the clubs start to get active at 11:00 and are open until morning.

For you or anybody in South Florida area who wants to see and be seen, and do *not* recommend Fort Lauderdale at all. It cannot come close to South Beach, Miami. It is 5% of "SoBe" for those who want to see and be seen.

You can thong anywhere on Miami Beach proper which extends for many many miles, but South Beach is awesome and is "the place" - a walk from around 23rd or so to 1st street along the beach on any reasonably crowded day will show this to be the case.

I used to park in the lots near 18th street (or ?17th), which are large outdoor lots and cost is less than the slightly closer garage style multideck lots seen between 5th street to 13th or so.

Anyway - I do agree there is less and less thongs on males. Females there is still tons of women wearing them at SoBe and topless too.

My way of looking at it is this. As I said I only do this for a bit of legal exhibitionism and a majority of positive attention. The less guys who do this - the more positive response I get - so I try to look at it that way. The girls still wear little to nothing and that's who I'm looking at anyway so that's my take. I get to look and drool at SoBe and walk around near naked myself. Not uncommon I end up sourrounded by sexy women. Perhaps guys think I'm gay or something. Fine with me. Many sexy women close by. I wouldn't choose a secluded beach, or a boring one like Fort Lauderdale with SoBe available.

As an aside, I once checked out Hollywood Beach in 2005. It looked pretty cool - very different though - an older people area, but a younger area looked pretty happening. Didn't stay too long though. I liked the still un - taken - over (by rich condo owners) look. It won't last I'm sure - thus if it's still like that now - is very unique for South Florida.

I also have huge thumbs down for all of Palm Beach County, Tampa Bay area, Jacksonville. Sooo... for Florida it is SoBe for me, but I would try Hollywood if SoBe wasn't available....

There are some reasonably priced motels and hotels in SoBe - I recall one Holiday Inn around 23rd street at the far end of the main action, either on the beach or one building away from on the beach, and that was advertising something like $75 I believe (I know it was less than $100 for sure). Don't recall what month. Anyway I know that you can get reasonable deals even in SoBe unless you go to the mightiest and most famous places.

The Leows (sp?) - is a killer hotel on the beach with a hotel pool you wouldn't believe in partial view of strollers along the path on South Beach. It is somewhere around 15th street or so I think. Anyway, lots to choose from but I don't have any specific hotel to recommend...

I do think the smaller hotels near streets 1-5 which are less fancy but right on the beach and in front of usually some of the hottest babes on the beach look like they might be interesting...

There are two ways to do South Beach:

A)  Get a cab or shuttle from airport and stay at a hotel on the beach, or a very short walk from beach.  Some where on the South end of the Island that makes up Miami Beach.   Then walk everywhere, except when you go out to dinner on 17th St, then you get a cab.  I once had a girlfriend who lived on the West side of the island and we would walk from her house to the beach with out a worry, but if its mid summer you will wilt.  (Preferably stay in a hotel East of Collins Av, towards the beach).

B)  Find some where low cost and drive, BUT you will pay a lot for parking, and it's very scarce on weekends or in session.  Parking in a lot is less of a hassle than running back to the meter every couple of hours, but lots are not right on the beach so you will still be walking some.  And spaces along the beach are very few, so if on meters you will probably be a block or two back so then you will be walking again.

Option A is good for a weekend or a week at South Beach.  Option B is good if visiting for the day from Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, or a convention hotel in the city of Miami.

If you want to see lots of different beaches then use a car and drive around Florida, but if you want to see a lot of different people, and different restaurants and bars, then use your feet.

Miami Beach has horrendous parking problems and does not have a park and ride system like Fort Lauderdale.

Beachfolks:

I have to respectfully disagree with part of what JM_Runs said ... that is, regarding parking.

I went to SoBe many many times, driving each time and parking. I went on weekedays and weekends, in season and out of season. I *never* had trouble parking. I usually paid $5 for 24 hours of parking. Occasionally it was $8.

I parked across the street from the Jackie Gleason theater, in the outdoor parking lots, which as I said usually are $5. This is around 18th street and a short walk to the beach. Also, there is a huge parking structure behind these outdoor lots which I have used about 20% of the time when the outdoor lots were being used for other events (ie; boat shows or special parking for an event in Jackie Gleason theater).

I parked once in a lot on 7th street, but I did not need to. It cost more, maybe $10 a day or $13, I really don't remember.

But $5 or max $8 per day was my charge and I preferred these lots to the others.

Regarding hotels, there is a gazillion. There is a local shuttle in SoBe and busses along highway 1. I don't know a lot about any of this because I never needed to use even the local shuttle. I was a 2-3 minute walk from the main shops on 17th street, this is the place to be. So my walk to and from the beach from my $5 lot was generally as enjoyable and entertaining (and scenic full of babes) as the beach itself.

Miami Beach if anything has a hotel glut. I'm talking miles and miles of beach (not just sobe). Have fun. Call for info. I'm sure you will enjoy yourself no matter how you go.

I wouldn't go anywhere else in the USA that I've ever been to but SoBe if I was flying strictly for a vacation - and I've seen all the main beach areas in Florida and California save for parts of Northern CA, and southwest Fl (panhandle , pensacola, etc.). I did not like anywhere else much from Jacksonville to Miami besides Miami beach itself, and HOllywood beach just north of miami county line.

I agree for once with Greg,  the parking around 18th and the convention center is ample.  But.. from the parking here it is a walk to the beach:  About six or seven blocks, so you will want to take everything in one go.

When talking about South Beach, and going down to visit, I try to park quite a bit further South, around 6 th to 11th streets.  This is where day time action is.  Across from Limus Park which is the bit of beach that does not have condos and hotels on it.  The only disadvantage is that although there is lots of inland parking in the lots up around 17th and 18th streets there is very little of it down south near that bit of beach.  There are some pubic parking lots, and some metered spaces, but they fill up quick on sunny days and weekends.

If you are in staying in south beach you don't need a car.   Hop on the new "South Beach Local" bus and cool off for just 25 cents a trip. With numerous bus stops, and service running every 10 to 15 minutes every day, the South Beach Local makes getting around in SoBe a breeze.  http://www.miamibeachfl.gov/NEWCITY/sobe_local.asp

You can drive down, and park for the day at one of the lower cost lots located inland, and then take the buss to the beach.  That works too. I have a link here for the buss route.  You may want to print it out because it also marks the parking lots.  Note that most of the ones by the south end of the beach are small, and the ones near 17th are multi story and large.  Bus stops are marked too.  South Beach "Local" buss and parking lot map

If you do park in a space that is not a city parkng space you would do well to head a guide I found that says: NEVER park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, on a sidewalk, at a red painted curbside, in a designated Residential Zone, in a disabled parking space if you are not disabled, nor on anyone's lawn. Take a moment to read EVERY sign in front of and behind your parked car and obey the hours indicated.

If you park in an alley or utilize the parking lot of a store that is closed for the night, your car will be towed away. Call Beach Towing 305-534-2128 or Tremont Towing 305-672-2395 to find out if they have your car. They are not very friendly folks and will require CASH and photo ID plus proof of ownership to retrieve your car. Should you leave the car overnight, a storage charge will be added to the towing fee... this will be more than $100 US. The drivers are not opened to threats and negotiations. They are absolutely not flexible. They are big, SERIOUS people.

JM: Sounds like a lot of good info there in that post...

Beachfolk / others: It is a short 5 minute walk to the beach from the parking lots by Jackie Gleason thater on 18th. 17th street is where there is more nice shops and more people shopping and walking around as anywhere else. Toursists and locals. This is basically a "special street" which has limited crossing (kind of like 3rd streed promenade for those familiar with Venice / Santa Monica, CA).

So I think what JM might refer to is for those looking to party in cheaper clubs - 13 streeet and lower, on Collins (the street bordering the beach and beachpark) - is where young people hang and drink and dance and go to the older cheap hotels.

17th is high class - don't know if JM has been there recently. It's now the main shopping drag.

As for walking, 5 minutes from my $5 lot to the beach at 17th street. (5 minute walk). You will enjoy the short walk down busy 17th and hit the beach near the Leows Hotel (the classiest in SoBe).

And there is nothing better really about 8th street beach area to 17th street beach area. 17th has more tourists probably, but it is a mix anywhere you go, and topless anywhere you go in these areas. I stayed away from 13th (the gay area - nothing personal just not my thing) - so I did not sit on the beach near 13th street.

Have fun and don't worry about parking. SoBe is awesome.

JM is talking if you want to park and be right on the beach and walk 60 seconds with a bunch of stuff and plop down. Meter lots? Forget that. Those are for locals and never worth the trouble unless you want to run back to your meter every 90 minutes to stuff a roll of quarters in it (and you need to pray you have those on you).

Anyway - hasta leugo. Divirtirse!

Re:South Beach, Beach Miami, Florida FL. ( SoBe )

I am a native of Miami and have known South Beach from its time as a rundown dangerous place  to the hot spot that it is today. I have lived in South Beach for the last two years and finally got motivated to share my observations as I just had to leave the beach for a thunder shower.

South Beach has changed from the days when it was dominated by the modeling and film industry types looking for cheap places to live or stay in an exciting and beautiful environment.  (Now they have been priced out of the area). It is becoming a much more diverse and upscale community that, hopefully, will not lose all of the old, funky, charm.

Once you get to South Beach, a car will only get in the way. You can walk (or take the Local) to anywhere you want to go.

The beach is also much more diverse. Gone are the days when, around 5th or 2nd St., you could find hoards of topless models in thongs that would take your breath away. That said, the entire beach front environment has gotten even more minimal swimwear tolerant and diverse. The beach is now more spread out in terms of minimal and topless swimwear.

I have talked to the Beach Patrol captain and there is no swimwear policy either on the beach or the rest of the area. Eimeo is certainly not the only person to walk around Collins or Washington Avenue wearing only a minimal g-string.

If a complaint is made, the first response by the Beach Patrol will be something like "welcome to South Beach". If the complainant pushes it further, the guard will approach the minimally clad beach goer and say something like "Excuse me, but we have had a complaint regarding your swimwear, since we would like the beach going experience to be comfortable for all, would you do us a favor and move a bit up or down the beach". This happens rarely and there has not been any time that cooperation was not achieved. This happened to me once a few years back when I was wearing a very minimal suit with monofilament sides. I moved a block and that ended it. There was no statement or attitude directed at me that was in any way negative.

A beach walk patrol person working for a private company once made a comment to me that my thong was not appropriate "off the beach". I complained and got a sincere apology and a reassurance that there were not different rules for on and off the beach.

The only reliable geographic patterns that I have observed are the gay area around 12th and 13th st., and the dominance of the high end hotels between 15th st and 20th st. North of Collins Park the south beach aura tends to fade with the retirement condos and less ritzy hotels. Again, the entire island is very diverse and I have felt comfortable wearing minimal swimwear all along the beach up to Haulover, which is a nude beach.

On weekends, I jog in the morning and go to the beach with my wife in the afternoon. I have observed that, in the morning, there tends to be more male thongers and older thongers.  Possibly because South Beach has a very lively late night club scene and the revelers are still sleeping. In fact, the major traffic jam begins around midnight.  In the after noon the thonging population tends to be overwhelmingly female.

There tends to be a more cosmopolitan crowd in the area from 15th street north. I have rarely been on the beach when I couldn't see at least a dozen people in thongs and at least a half dozen topless women from my beach towel. Up and down the beach the concentration of thongs and topless women seems to be randomly distributed, with concentrations appearing at various places that change from day to day.

The best time of year is, of course, the winter season. This is when we have a great number of European visitors for whom thong and topless beach wear is a matter of course and the dominance of "dork shorts" on guys tends to fade a little.

I went to SoBe on Sunday, and let me say that thongs are still very alive and accepted there! Everywhere I looked, there were women in thongs. I would say at least 25% of all women, and over 50% of women between 20-30 years old were in thongs or skinny rio's. However, I was the only guy in a thong on the entire beach! I setup at 5th street on a beach chair - and by the end of the day I had visited both 17th street and the pier (not in the same walk). I received no negative comments (just the usual finger pointing or giggles) and a group of two girls liked my thong and told me I had some confidence to walk around in a thong - but that I really had the body for it!

I parked on Collins Ave at 11am (almost two blocks off Ocean ave) near 3rd street. I dropped my shorts in the car and didn't cover up again until almost 7pm when I left! I had to go back to the car a couple times to grab my lunch and pay the meter too. Also, I saw something at SoBe I've never seen in my 6 years wearing thongs - another guy with a thong peaking over his jeans. I'm not into dudes, but it's cool to see that there are other thongers out there - plus he had a really cute girl on his arm. That does it - screw Orlando, I've got to move to Miami somehow.

BMicro: Thanks for your post. I thought a lot of great and interesting info there.

I especially agree that Winter is a good time to go - there probably are more Europeans etc. Some here have said that Summer is not so good - but if the heat and weather is ok for a person - I have found summer (well up through july - there were hurricanes in Aug and Sept when I was there) - but summer was probably the most women and least clothing I saw over an entire year there.

Even in Dec... there are days which may be too cold - but if it at least 70 I found that there is plenty of people - and plenty of gstring women and topless women.

I did not mind 15th up through 17th or 18th myself - I found that area to be more tourist filled - there are very good hotels up through 18th or 20th, but more lounge chairs and less towels.

8th street down to 5th is the youngest crowd I think - especially 8th. Lots of drinking.

I also agree with BMicro the beach is quite mixed between 1st and 15th. There is one area around 13th to 14th I believe which is known to be dedicated to homesexual, which is fine with everybody and something else cool about Miami (I am straight). There is a place for everybody.

Last, I would not overlook 2nd through 5th street, a bit less crowded it seems, but just as dense probably, and very sexy women like to come here possibly a tad more then other areas particularly in the 20-35 age range.

Oh - my experience was that in early morning the crowd although more sparce has a high percentage (higher I think) - of thong and topless women. I thought that women , not men , were in higher than usual percentage before 11am. Sometimes I wished I was not a natural slightly late riser, I would have liked to have arrived around 9am sometimes and seen how that went...

I agree with Greg Barkus there does seem to be more topless women, and more young beautiful women, out in the mornings.  I think there are several reasons:

  • Beautiful women tend to take care of them selves, or visa versa, so they go to bed at a reasonable hour, get up in the morning, exercise and go to the beach before it gets too hot.
  • Many other young women work in the bars, restaurants and night clubs.  They often have to report for work around 3 or 4 in the afternoon so they hit the beach early, catch some rays, and some more zzz's, and then leave the beach around lunch time, so they have time to get home, get showered and cleaned up, have something to eat and still have time to get to work.  The people who started work at 8:30 are not home till around 6:00 pm and by then it's getting a bit late for the beach.
  • Traffic can be a bear, so if it's your day off, going to the beach in the morning when the traffic is flowing the other way makes more sense than trying to go in the late afternoon when you are traveling in the return traffic jam direction.
  • In summer, about 8 months of the year, the locals avoid the heat of the mid day sun.  So we tend to go mornings or afternoons but midday in the summer is often way too hot.  Summer days frequently start clear and sunny, but by noon are clouding over, and in the afternoon turn into an assault by scattered rain and thunderstorms.  Therefor you are far more likely to have a good time at the beach, and be able to work on your tan, in the morning.

On weekends the difference in suntanning times between the girls and the guys is the most pronounced.  The girls come early, get a tan, go get cleaned up in the afternoon and are clean and ready for the evening, having probably squeezed in some afternoon shopping.  The boys seem to drink late on Fridays and get to the beach in the afternoon.  By about four or five o'clock, even the late arriving girls have packed up and left.  This leaves the boys still standing around wondering where all the babes went.  It looks a bit like a night club at the end of the evening when the good looking girls have spit with their prize and the rest of the men stand around unsure what to do next.

Thanks to all of you who've posted helpful info for South Beach!  I got to travel to Miami Beach for business last week.  I walked the beaches from 17th to 12th, saw some especially amazing women near the Delano but very few men in thongs.  Parking is definitely challenging, so try the bus from wherever you're staying.

Farther north where I was staying in the 80's block, I did wear my thong with very few comments.  As many of you said, it's a great feeling to walk along the beach in so little!  I also travelled to Haulover late one afternoon, very few couples there in the clothing optional section.  Walked back to my car at the southernmost end in just my thong (definitely try the north lot).  I look forward to coming back!

Just got back from a long Columbus Day weekend in South Beach.  The weather was fantastic and the crowds were thinner than normal.  My wife and I thonged exclusively in front of the Il Villaggio condos (between 14th & 15th streets).  During the 4 days we were there, we saw countless other women in thongs, quite a few who were topless also.  Other than me, I only saw two other men in thongs, but there were quite a few europeans (I assume) in speedo style bikinis.  All in all, it was a very good and relaxing short vacation.

Re:South Beach, Beach Miami, Florida FL. ( SoBe )

A recent professional conference in Miami provided an opportunity for me to visit South Beach yesterday afternoon. I arrived at the 5th Avenue access point at around 1:30 and stayed for three hours. This is at the southern end of Lumus Park. The weather was perfectly sunny and while not crowded, there were plenty of people enjoying the beach. I saw at least a dozen girls wearing thong bikinis and roughly the same number of topless sunbathers, though the two were not the same group. I've always found this curious. Presumably, thongers are less inhibited and would be more inclined to go topless. In practice this doesn't seem to always be the case.

I wore my white thong and was the only male thonger. I walked south almost to the tip of South Beach and then north to the edge of the gay beach area at 12th before returning to my towel. I didn't have the nerve to walk along the shore so I walked behind the crowd closer to the dune. Its easier walking back there anyway as the sand is compacted by service vehicles. Most of the males of course wore board shorts and I heard a few making comments to their friends about "the guy in the thong". Nothing was overtly negative - mostly just amused.
During my walk I went in search of a shower to rinse off the sand and salt. The first dune pathway I walked down turned out to be the entrance to Nikki Beach club. This is the one with the beds laid out around the bar area. The place was dead - I saw only staff preparing for the night's opening so I turned around and continued back up the beach looking for a shower. I found one at the south point park. By the time I returned to my towel my suit was dry. Sadly, it was now time to leave. I parked two blocks away in the public parking garage at the corner of 5th and Collins. It was only $1 per hour. You enter from the alley behind the garage. Another memorable day at SOBE!

Sarasotajit-For our non-native friends, we should remind them that mid-October is off-season for Florida with low beach populations even though the weather is really fine for beach activities. In Feburary the weather will be cold and windy and the beach accomodations will be full whether or not they can go out on the beach.

We're often there in January.  The temps are usually in the 70's during the day.  There are occasional "cold snaps" as they call them there when the temps will fall for a day or two, rarely 3-4.  I remember one day on South Beach when it was 45 degrees for a high, sunny and windy in Jan.  Everyone was freezing in their tropical clothes, thankfully we had our winter coats from the trip.  The lows seem to be in the low 60's that time of year.  Keep that in mind if you go out clubbing at night.   Walking around in very thin and tiny dresses can be uncomfortable for the ladies.

Everyone be aware that "South Florida" can be very different in the winter.  Some people call Tampa "South Florida" but the temps can vary 20 degrees from Miami, and likewise Key West can be 10 degrees warmer than Miami sometimes.
