Cupecoy is great as long as there actually IS a beach!  The sand tends to come and go whereby there literally is no beach on some occasions. When there is sufficient sand to form a beach, full nudity is common and the wearing of thongs and other small swimwear is fully accepted.

December trip to orient beach was awesome.  Stayed at L'hoste.  La Playa beach bar has been updated.  Lots of French people at La Playa.  Wore a thong all week and saw many other men and women wearing thongs particularly just at La Playa.  Several men every day at La Playa over course of week and at least five women every day wore thongs (about 1 in 5 of the women and about 1 in 15 of the men at La Playa).  Lots of speedos at La Playa part of Orient beach and less board shorts than I've seen the past three trips.  Toplessness was actually less than thonging although there were several women who were topless every day.  Great trip with great food from Grand Case to Orient Beach.

Unfortunately I only saw several thongers on the beach during Christmas... And even Europeans on the beach started to wear board shorts, to my surprise.

amalfi, St. Martin is possibly my favorite place on earth to go (hence my screen name), and we always stay at L'Hoste.  I thong there before walking down to Club Orient to spend the day.  For those who have never been to SXM, if you want to spot thongs, you'll definitely spot more down on the "prude" end of the beach than at Club Orient.  La Playa does seem to be a good spot for thongers.

I have to agree with sxmthong, you'll see a good amount of thongers at La Playa most any day.  Club Orient is almost all nude, but thongers are more than welcome down there too.  I've taken many vacations there and stayed at the condos adjacent to L'Hoste or sailing and anchored off shore.  You couldn't be more centrally located to a few restaurants, a nice little bakery and even a small grocery store.  Mornings are perfect to wake up, walk for an hour along the beach in the morning with plenty of other tourists then enjoy a quiet breakfast on your balcony before a day at the beach.

Beware, midweek (Tues - Thurs) is when most of the larger cruise ships are in Phillipsburg and many passengers make their way over to Orient Beach to "see the nude" beach.  It's actually quite amusing to watch all the folks arrive, point, chat or try to take pics of everyone in their bikinis, thongs or nude.  Then later in the day, even funnier to see some of the same people strolling down solo to Club Orient and stripping naked... But the best part of the day is about 3:30-4:30pm, when the "bell rings" and they all pack up and head back to their ship and once again we have the beach to ourselves.

I knew of other cruise ships packed with average overweight heavy drinking tourists wearing colourful shirts who disembark with their cameras to take shots and laugh, fully dressed and even wearing socks and shoes,  at nude or semi nude people on the beach;     then the people on the beach should do the same and pick up  their cameras to take shots of the passengers just arrived on the floating zoo and laugh with them too.....
But in this case when some passengers stroll down solo to Club Orient and strip naked, they shouldn't be laughed at;   instead they should be friendly welcomed so they are encouraged,   all thumps up for them, I think.
Anyway, the bell will ring and they would head back to their ship shortly.

Stayed at L'Hoste several years ago. Great place and centrally located.  Got up every morning and walked the beach from end to end in the buff without a hassle.  Stayed in the buff until tuesday when one of the beach bar guys motioned that I needed to get covered up. This seemed bizarre, since I especially booked on the French side, but complied.  Yup, it was the tourists from the Disney cruise boat coming to gawk at the naked people.  There they were, the whole family with children and grand parents to see the naked people they all heard about on the boat.  Imagine their dissapointment when everyone was covered up with the exception of Club Orient.  I loved the French side and would go back in a heartbeat.  Don't know if it is still like this or not.

We stayed at Cap Carraibes, next door to l'Hoste, 2 or 3 years ago, before a sailing cruise.  Jogged on the beach nude every morning, but midday lay out in my string in front of the hotel, and while parasailing.  Strolled the beach nude midday away from the hotel (and my wife!), since the hotel forbade nude sunbathing, but the thousands of beach goers looking on seemed to be the normal hoards who descend every day, not loads of cruise boat tourists.  Still, it was a new adventure for me, and I loved it.

Wife and I will be at Esmerelda in February. How common is it to see thongs and g-strings on men and women? Can we wear them comfortably and without any hassle?  Can the wife expect to wear a bottom that "exposes" a little...she has several open type front suits that she/I would like to see her wear. She's very fit so we're hoping for no complaints.

Any other beaches there that would be friendly to this attire?

Happy Bay is c/o, quiet and laid back, unlike the hurly-burly of Orient.  10-min. coastal path walk from north end of Friar's Bay beach.  She'd be fine there.

Esmeralda is a great place to stay.  I swam nude in the pool adjacent to my room with no issues whatsoever.  The pools are private.  Walked to Orient Beach in a thong with no issues at all.  In fact, most wore thongs or speedos.  Should not be an issue for your wife at all.

Avainman - thongs and g-strings are very common on both sexes except for the cruise ship visitors - they make up the dork short and Hawaiian shirt crowd.  Be glad you're not one of those.  The custom at the Exmeralda is to swim nude in the pools unless another guest objects.  Usually not a problem.  We've worn g's by Dore on Orient north of the Club O area with no problems at all.  Maybe a few stupid remarks by the cruise ship people but their opnions don't count.  Be sure to visit Sexy Friuts, Adam & Eve and Luis Gomes (the bikini guy) as well as the Club O area where naked is the norm.  You will find most beaches on the French side OK with topless, thongs and g-strings although once at Orient you probably will put off visiting other beaches to your next trip.

EWsmerelda is very thong and G string friendly for men and women.  If you walk just norht of the resort, you may even be able to go nude.  We would stay at beach in front of resort in g string or thong to use the charis and the bar service. and when we wanted to cool off, walk north of the resort, peel off our suits and swim nude in th eocean to cool off. Then we would get out put our g string and thong back on and lay out again.  It is very relaxed ther eand you won't have any problem.  we swam nude in our little pool outside our room every afternoon to relx before getting ready to go out for the evening.

We were there earlier this month.  The only thing that has changed is that the beach is a little narrower than usual (this is a natural occurance and no big deal) .  There is also is a new sign just beyond the traditional nude beach forbiding nudity .  As always topless and thongs are fine everywhere.

So no more nudes parading the length of the beach midday before the thousands of textiles set up there?  I'll bet they're still out there early mornings taking their constitutionals, and a few running buff.  That was good exercise when we were there staying there mid-beach a few years back.

We were there last week and I was really disappointed when I saw the sign. It used to be great to walk the entire lenngth of the beach in the morning before the beach got full.

Now I put on a tiny g-string when I go from nude to textile for my beer run. 5 for $10 on the textile side vs $3.50 each on the nude side- well worth the walk!

bmicro - check out the Orient Beach Hotels link on the Orient Beach website (http://www.orientbeach.com/), that should give you a good overview on what is available in the immediate viciinty of Orient Beach.  You might also check out the forums on that site for general information on Orient Beach.  For information on St Martin try the St  Martin forums on Travel Talk Online (http://traveltalkonline.com/).  Between those two sites they should be able to answer any questions you may have - don't hesitate to post on either site, somebody will know the answer on any conceivable questioin you might have.  By the way, the weather in the summer is as nice as it is the rest of the year.  Orient Beach catches the tradewinds coming up from the south.  It might be hot but not uncomfortably so and the humidity usually stays on the western side of the mountains.  Have a great trip.

Note that in summer it's not trade winds season, it's hotter than usual and it's hurricane season, so you can have tropical storm with few days of rain shower. And the mountains in St Martin are not high enough to catch the humidity...

We are thinking about going in nid april. We want to stay on Orient beach, but reports of all the restarraunt and bars closing up around 6pm kind of scare us.What do people do in the evenings. We like to relax and talk with others about their experiences.Driving to the dutch side and back at night sounds like its not the safest thing to do.We have stayed at maho before and its good.Has anyone have any info on how thong ,topless friendly  the pool area is there.Last time we were their(2004)we wore very small bikinis and my wife kept her top on.There will be no tops packed this time and only thongs.
Because Maho has the night life, driving to the beach during the day is easier that driving the other way at night, but there may be more clothes involved which sucks.

I always stay on Orient Beach, and there are plenty of restaurants open late into the night there.  If anything, you'd have a harder time finding a restaurant before 6:00 in the evening to have dinner at.  The restaurants also take turns having a night off, so you may want to find out the schedule to plan.  There may not be much night life, but a few of the beach bars do have things going on during various nights of the week.  If you decide to stay on Orient, I'll be glad to suggest some restaurants if you want to message me.  :-)

As for suits, there has been a marked decline of men in thongs each time I've visited since 2001, but you can still wear as little as you want without getting hassled.  You might even decide to pick up a new suit or two at one of the shops on the beach.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

In the morning you'll see people walking the entire beach nude and the patrols (when there are any) don't say anything.  After about 9:30-10am, they tend to keep to the nude section only since the beach bars start to fill up with cruise ship passengers.  I think the patrols prefer that nudists stay on the nude side and coverup when walking north during the busiest part of the day.  As for thongs, I've walked the entire beach, morning, midday and end of the afternoon with no problems.  You may get some gawkers, pointers and comments from the cruise shippers, but I just ignore them and realize they have to head back to their packed sardine can at the end of the day and don't get to enjoy the beauty and freedom of staying in St Maarten for an extended period of time.

Adam & Eve does sell mens suits.  There is also apparently a guy who hand-crafts suits at the small outdoor market there. According to what I've read online, he has some sample suits for sale but will also make you exactly what you want and bring it the next day for you.  I have never seen him,, but I've heard good things about his work on the Orient Beach website.

Luis Gomes is the bikini guy who has a spot immediately behind Chez Leandra's on Orient Beach.  An area of stalls between the beach and parking lot.  His will be the first one on the left you come to if you approach from the direction of Pedro's.  You will see a sign on the beach itself with an arrow.  The name of his business is Marylyndy's (after his daughter).  Luis sets up shop around 2 in the afternoon.  He mostly makes womens suits but does have men's and will make you whatever your want over night and have it for you the next day.  By the way, Adam & Eve has buckets of thongs and g-strings as well.

What do you guys no about Dawn Beach, specifically the Westin there?  Is it suitable for thongs and other minimal swimwear?  Are there multiple hotels on that strip of beach, or just the Westin?  I've noticed that most of the posts on this thread pertain to Orient beach, but my gf and I were hopig to stay at a more upscale place, such as the Westin, but also want to may sure that our smaller swimwear wouldn't be a problem.  Is Orient Beach that much "better" when it comes to minimal swimwear? On a non-swimwear related note, are there good restaurants close to the Westin/Dawn Beach?

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

You are going to need to make a decision.  I have stayed at both (Orient Beach and the Westin).  The Westin is a true american style resort.  There are no restaurants in walking distance, so be prepared to pay a premium.  They do have a casino, which was not busy when I visited.  I did wear a thong on the beach, but I was the only guest in something minimal.  I never saw anything but Men in Trunks and Women in regular bikinis.  I was only at the resort for 4 days.
As for Orient Beach, there are plenty of notes in the forum.  Also, you can visit "orientbeach.com".
As for me, I would choose Orient Beach, but that's just me.

We just returned from a great week at Orient Bay,staying at the Alamanda.Beautiful place with very friendly staff.Wearing  a thong on the beach there is not an issue at all. There were an abundance of men and women in thongs and G stringsThe ages varied from young to old and represented all shapes and sizes. At one  bar on Saurday there was a group of about  six, 30 something men standing there, all wearing the same style thong in different colors.
Every style of mens swimwear was well represented,Thongs,G Strings, Bikini,Square cut and Dork shorts.I did notice that there were a good number of men in shorts that were well above the knee.I would say something like a 3" inseam. There may be hope yet.
My wife and I wore G strings the whole week walking the beach. We would wrap a sarong around our selves to get into the hotel but there were men and women walking through the lobby with visible bottoms .We never swam in the pool but I don't think there would have been a issue swimming there in Thongs and topless.I saw one woman topless out around the pool.We just prefered the beach.

Thongs, g-strings, dork shorts, topless or tank suit .. it just isn't a big deal.  It makes you wonder why wearing a thong is a hanging offense at some places and a total non-issue in others.  What do  they know that we don't?

We just got back from our first trip to St Martin, staying on the french-side facing the non-nude portion of Orient Bay, we traveled around the dutch and french sides of the island several times in our rental car and even kayaked out to Pinel Island and here are my observations.
*Phillipsburg (Dutch): city beach with NO ONE on it except annoying locals trying to sell or rent you stuff...everything closes at 6pm due to crime and lack of tourists it seemed.*Simpson Bay (Dutch): overbuilt area that was nice for dining but beach wasn't worth trying, seems too much like the USA...not much local flavor.*Cupecoy Beach (Dutch): nice small beach that we got to after climbing down cliffs to get to it, wife and I both wore g-strings for the few hours we were there, everyone else was in dork shorts and full-coverage suits, one family arrived shortly after we turned over to tan our butts...overheard them talking and they said "is this a nude beach" before they packed back up and left, we did like Cupecoy Beach but the company wasn't ideal.*Grand Case (French): narrow beach in front of some great restaurants, we didn't get a chance to lay out there but we did see a couple women in thongs while eating lunch and dinner, got some great sunset pics there.*Loitere Farm inland (French): while preparing for a hike up to Pic Paradis we saw a few women in thongs at their spring-fed swimming pool.*Pinel Island (French): small island we kayaked to offshore near Orient Bay...saw a couple naked guys on the beach while we snorkeled in gstrings.*Orient Bay (French): we stayed at Mount Vernon condos which is on the opposite end of the beach from Club Orient, saw several women topless and in thongs at the beach and at the condo pool but the guys were all in dork shorts...wife and I wore gstrings and she was topless. We never did venture down to the other end of the beach to Club Orient, we probably should have because it was rather boring at our end, guess we went at a bad time of year (off-season)...the beach was really nice but we were alone or the minority in minimal swimwear most of the time.

Europe is hot in the summer, so Europeans stay close to home or go to the Med. St Martin would has a lot more Europen's in the winter when it is a tropical escape from the snows.  I think you would have found a different vibe during season.

The Americans, and more specifically the buss loads of cruse ship tourists, have spoiled these islands. The hoards from the cruse ships seem to have turned the Caribbean into an extension of an American shopping mall.

Phillipsburg always closed at sundown, not because of crime, but because that's when the tourists get back on the ships. It was always a bit grotty and when I was there it smelled when the wind is off the lagoon. The beach in front of the shops was more of a third street, not someplace sane people tend to sit out, unless you are of a cruse ship and it is the only sand you can see from the dock.

To think that during your week you only saw about as many people in thongs as I did last time I ran down my local beach is sad. Although being St Martin you did see many topless women, which we don't see very often here in Fort Lauderdale.

Many years ago I walked around St Martin, well a good part of it.  One day I walked from Phillipsburg to Marigot all along the coast, round the West Side. I started the venture after the harbor master for Phillipsburg told me that the first 3 meters was by law public property. We discussed the privatization of the coasts, and I decided to recreate the famous walk, (which probably never happened). On my adventure I had to head inland at some points to get around a bluff or two, and scramble over a few walls.  No one challenged me. One wall was reinforced with very spiny cactus, so went inland around that property.  I walked naked down most of the less populated beaches in the nude, but that was long before they were as built up as today. There are some fine beaches to the West of Simpson Bay, like Long Bay.  I saw isolated topless and nude people on the south side, and quite a few topless women on the rather scruffy beach just before Marigot. In those days Marigot had the BEST swimsuit store. Got some good HOM and YSL suits there. Now the coast is inaccessible in many places, with walled private estates, you could not do that hike these days.

Very true JM...we're Americans but not the typical crowd that want to change the world, we were looking to escape the NORM and go someplace different...the DUTCH side/St Maarten we found to be an Americanized tourist trap much like most of the beaches in the USA, the FRENCH side/St Martin had a lot more island feel to it with no sign of becoming Americanized...we would definitely go back to French side of St Martin as the people were friendly and it was a nice change for us, the cruise ships can have the Dutch side except for a couple restaurants in Simpson Bay that were nice.
