I actually like the fact that there is a variety of bodies on Orient Beach.  It serves as a reminder that being nude or nearly nude on a beautiful beach is more about comfort and freedom than about trying to be sexy or look up.

That being said, Speedster78, I wish I were going to be there in February and could hang with you!  Enjoy your trip, and please give us a full report of your thong sightings.

Just booked a week at La Plantation for may.  Ended up only about $1000 per person airfare included.  Can anyone give any advice on best way to get from the airport?  It looks like the hotel is close to the airport - taking a cab is easy and cheap enough?
Also, anyone ever been there in May that could speak to what I'm in for in terms of the crowd? Which bar has the cheapest beers?  Fun activities to do on the island besides thonging?

I believe La Plantation is on the French side near the Esmeralda....no where near the airport. The main airport is on the Dutch side. There is a very small airport on the French side but you wouldn't fly into there unless you were coming form another island like St. Barts.
Taxi from the airport over to the Orient Beach area is about $18

Thanks for the information on the taxi.  I am also curious, when exploring the beaches around the island, I hear a rental car is usually the best way to go.  Is parking ever an issue?
T_for_2 #210

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

Date Posted:02/03/2014 01:40:28

Parking generally is not an issue at the various beaches but parking sometimes can be tight in the major business areas of Marigot, Phillipsburg, and Grande Case. Although a rental car is not absolutely necessary, it would be a good option if you wish to explore various parts of the island.A little advise in respect to rental cars:NEVER leave anything in the car that you would not want to have stolen. Although other crimes against tourists are very rare, car break-ins occur frequently. Some (but not all) rental agents actually recommend that you do not lock the vehicle so as to avoid having locks damaged during break-ins. You should check with the agent about this when you rent the car,Secondly, NEVER drive after you have consumed liquor, even just a small amount. The French side Gendarmes regularly conduct roadside sobriety checks, and the acceptable blood alcohol level is MUCH lower than in the U.S.  Be aware that these checks often are done during the daytime as well as late at night.Other than that, I am sure you will have a great time on St. Martin and I am envious of you.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

Date Posted:02/03/2014 07:16:06

wearsthongs - I'd go with the taxi from the airport to La Plantation.  If you do rent a car  T_for_2 is absolutely right about the gendarmes and leaving the car unlocked.  La Plantation is located in the Village at Orient Beach and if you are a first time visitor you might want to forgo  visits to any of the island's other beaches.  Once on Orient Beach you will get hit by something called "sand gravity" - that will pretty much determine what you see or don't bother with for the rest of your trip.  Don't worry it's a good thing.

I haven't been to the Village for a few years but there isn't much of a reason to leave once you arrive - maybe an afternoon in Phillipsburg but you can always catch a taxi - behind Pedro's any time of the day.  I am pretty sure a one way trip is $18 and it is much easier than renting a car.  We've always gone in May and for us it's the right time, actually any time is the right time on SXM.  Once on the actual beach hang a left for the beachside restaurants, nude beach and cheap beer.  Carib is the beer of St. Martin, if you forget that there are a million signs all over the place to help you remember.  Check out Sexy Fruits for thongs and Adam & Eve for jewelry (or the other way around).

By the way $1000 for a week on Orient Beach is a steal.  If you need any more information PM me or post something.  In the meantime check out this website:  http://www.orientbeach.com/  Best wishes for a great trip.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

There is no surf to speak of.  Orient is protected by a reef for about half of its length - check out Google Earth to see what I mean.  There is a little on the northern end but not much.  Certainly not surfable.  You are better out renting a Hobie Cat, sailboard or kayak and paddle out to Cay Verte, a small island about 600 yards from Orient Water Sports at the south end of Orient Beach.  It's an ideal place to run amok, naked and unafraid, with your significant other.  Just bring plenty of water and  a couple of XXXL white t-shirts each,  you will need them for sun protection.

Unless there is a significant storm, there is only a minimal difference between high and low tide on St. Martin. In fact, the difference is so small that it usually is difficult to tell whether the tide is high or low.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

I think our record at Club Orient is something like eight straight days naked - not counting trips to the beachside restaurant area wearing a G-string or transparent half-pareo (under our rules that doesn't count).  A carry-on is a good way to go for some but we always take a substantial piece of checked baggage.  Not to take stuff there but to fill with bottles of MaDouDou and Rum Jumbie for the trip back.  That was a record as well, 12 bottles of MaDouDou and three of Rum Jumbie.

My wife and I are considering a trip to St Martin.  This would be our first trip there.  We’re looking at renting a naturist-friendly villa (http://www.st-martin-vacation.com/Naturist-Friendly.html) near a clothing-optional beach.  Does anyone have any experience doing this?  Any specific suggestions or recommendations?

On another note, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a warning about a serious mosquito-borne disease that has been infecting people on St Martin (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/watch/chikungunya-saint-martin).   It's a viral disease that causes fever, joint pain, and potentially other complications.  A report from Vaccine News Daily references 1,780 suspected cases on St Martin documented by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (http://vaccinenewsdaily.com/medical_countermeasures/329945-more-than-5900-cases-of-chikungunya-in-caribbean-south-america/).  Can anyone who’s been there recently provide any first-hand information?

I want to do a risk assessment. We’re hoping to have a care-free vacation in a tropical paradise, but it appears as though the care-free aspect might not be achievable.

Back from my 10 day trip to Dutch side St. Maarten with a report. First I have to say there are aspects of St. Maarten that made my trip easier. English is spoken everywhere by everyone. US currency was accepted everywhere I went. I rented a car with no issues and the airport was one of the easiest to negotiate I've ever encountered. On the down side, the traffic is very congested particularly in the afternoon. The quality of the beaches and the water were poor in comparison to other Caribbean islands. As most of the beaches are bays and have boats more or less permanently anchored in them, the pollution is apparent with an unpleasant film and lack of clarity in the water. Of the 'baies" I visited Simpson Bay was the worst and Baie Longue and Baie Rouge only slightly better, rocky beaches with water not as clear as expected. Weather was terrific during my stay 1/27 to 2/6 with the occasional brief shower. No one seemed at all concerned about the viral outbreak that was in the news prior to my arrival.

The beach attire at Simpson Bay was conservative with the rare rio back on women and maybe 10% of men in speedos. The crowd was definitely older and comprised of seasoned St Maarten vacationers. Baie Rouge was a surprise. It had a mix of locals and vacationers who had driven to the location as there is plenty of parking at the western end of the beach and with seemingly no hotels nearby. The vacationers were an interesting mix that included several thonging women in the same small group. They had set up a picnic area right next to the only restaurant in the area and were getting lots of attention. Heading east from the parking area there were an unusually high percentage (>50%) of solo sunbathers in speedos. The number of women dropped way off as I headed east. Familes all congregated around that one restaurant at the parking area. While I was there no one went into the water. Baie Longue was virtually deserted when I went there late in the afternoon. It looked beautiful but on closer inspection had some of the most treacherous looking rocks just below the waterline. Overall I think St. Maarten is a safe choice for weather, not a great choice for quality beaches. It's an area where you can thong without issue but don't expect the company of fellow thongers.

We have been going to St Martin for the last ten years. We do not even visit the beaches you mentioned. There are much better beaches on the island. Cupecoy, Happy Bay, Petite Cay, and Orient are much better choices for beaches. There are 37 beaches on the island and it appears you chose the beaches we dislike the most. We see thong or nude use of the beaches every time we go.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

Date Posted:03/08/2014 01:24:07

The Dutch and French sides of the island are VERY different with the Dutch side feeling very much like being in U.S.  Although we have made quite a few visits to St. Martin, I must admit that we have never gone to any of the Dutch side beaches so I really can not comment on those you specifically mentioned. If you ever travel to St. Martin again, I highly recommend that you stay on (or at least go to) the French side where there are some really fantastic beaches. Other than seaweed from time to time, there you will find absolutely no pollution and few if any boats. As on the Dutch side, US currency is accepted everywhere and English is spoken or understood by virtually everyone. Regarding the beach being almost deserted in the late afternoon, this is pretty typical of all beaches on St. Martin, probably due to the fact that darkness falls by about 6:00 PM all year round. Although there may be a few stragglers here and there, most people seem to pack up around 3 -4 pm or so and head back to where they are staying.

Personally I've always brought G-strings from home to wear on Orient Beach.  I don't think Luiz has an active website although I believe his wife is an IT person.  He does sell off the rack but it's hit or miss.  It is definitely worth the short walk to his hut if only to meet him - he is a really nice guy.  Prices for Luiz and Adam & Eve are higher than Dore but that doesn't mean you shouldn't still look.

Just spent 8 days on orient beach in st. martin. May is definitely a great time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds.  At orient beach there were available chairs at all sections of the beach all days we were there and no cruise ships docked in phillipsburg during our visit.  There were lots of women topless and in thongs.  For men, I would say maybe 15-20% in swim briefs, no thongs.  I think most of the would be thong wearers were older and just went nude in the clothing optional section.  I did not thong at orient beach but I was wearing very brief bikinis.  No chuckles what so ever, but got checked out a fair bit (I am very muscular and lean).  Didn't really have any interest in the clothing optional section, it was all 50+ folks and mostly men.  Not fun for a 30 something to enjoy looks from young ladies.
Happy bay would be my recommendation for thonging.  I wore a thong and very skimpy gstring there.  There were always a few couples sunbathing nude and some of them were actually attractive (shocker).  The water was calmer here too, great for swimming and snorkeling. At any given time, there was never any more than 10-15 people on this beach. Highly recommended.
Petite cayes - pretty cool but prefer happy bay.  The beach is very narrow and the water is rough.  Nice hike though.
We drove through the dutch side but didn't hang out there. The dutch side was touristy and lame.

Re:St Martin (St.Maarten) & Orient Beach

Date Posted:08/01/2014 12:14:35

Reporting St. Maartin:
I must admit that I had prior experience with this place, so I can't say how crowded or no crowded was the island.
I'm just stepping out the plane that brought me back home after 7 days in Simpson Bay. The beaches were clean and looked very safe, but a little eroded.
Despite the fact that the dutch side is more "american" and the french side is more "european", female thongers and topless were very popular in both sides. Male thongers were exiguous, I only saw two: a young man rather plump (with all due respect) and this server. This other man that I saw was in Mullet Bay, the dutch side; in my case I thonged in Orient Beach (clothes optional side, I was the only male thonger) and in Cupecoy beach (dutch side again). Happy Bay,
Freiar's bay and all others, although very beautiful and more preserved (little or no erosion), were populated enough, even very early, to consider a private or isolated thonging unadvisable.
Dorkshorts were everywhere and looked as the "mandatory" male attire, speedos or similar were very rare; I wore speedos where thongs looked inapropiate.
Cupecoy beach has a special fame on its own: a gay beach-straight friendly, and as the only beach on the dutch side where nudity was tolerated (but not totally legal I think); maybe because of that, it was by far the least crowded of all I visited; in one oportunity were three couples, one female and two male; women went nude, male dorkshorts or nude; again I standed as the only thonger. In my second visit to Cupecoy I was the only soul around.  Why didn't I go nude in Orient beach's nude side and Cupecoy? Well, I wanted my tanlines.
The selected instruments were two Jovana bikinis with extra narrow backsides that behaved as thongs... as expected.
Sexy Fruits and Adam & Eve were open and selling thongs.
All by now.
Greetings to all.

I'm thinking of going to the French side of St Martin during the first week of January and had a couple of questions I was hoping some of you could help me with.  First, of all is "Orient Bay" the same thing as "Orient Beach," because Orient Beach is where I would like to stay.  Second, how far are the Palm Court, La Plantation and Esmeralda Hotels from Orient Beach.  And, finally, have any of you stayed at these hotels and how would you rate them?  Thanks!

LaPlantation is not on the beach but it is just across the street. Esmeralda is right on Orient Beach & has clothing optional pools. However it is one of the farthest away from Club Orient (the nude section of Orient Beach).

Orient Beach is on Orient Bay.  They are one in the same.  Immediately behind the central part of Orient Beach is Orient Village, a complex of hotels, restaurants and shops all of relatively recent construction. The three hotels you mention are all located in Orient Village, about a five minute walk (more or less) from Orient Beach.  We always stay at Club Orient but have known people who have stayed at the three mentioned - we've never anything negative about any of them.  Check out Orient Beach on Google Earth to get a good grasp of the relevant geography.

We spent a day on Orient Beach last month, Steve and not been there since 2006 and it was Candy's first time in St Maarten. Hurricane Gonzalo did quite a bit of damage all over the island and especially hurt the beach itself at Orient. They lost a lot of sand:( Not too much structural damage to the bars up and down the beach or to Club Orient, but there is no beach left in front of the parking area where the beach changes to nude, the water is right at the rocks. Tons of places to stay in the village but Club Orient would be a lot more fun:) We had a great time!

I've stayed at la plantation, it was great and very reasonably priced.  Walk is less than 5 min to the beach, rooms are wonderful, each has a private porch in the back of the room.  Also there are free lounge chairs for all the hotels in orient bay, but they are served by the more expensive bars.  If you get lunch at one of the places further south the beers are cheaper and they won't charge you for the chair.  You'll want to rent a car so you can go explore the island, plus rentals are cheap, ours was $17/day.  Some advice though, leave the doors unlocked leave nothing in the car and buy the extra insurance.  Even though we left the car empty and unlocked, some one still stole the spare tire (just a donut).  The charge would have been $400 but I had the insurance so I got reimburst.
La plantation was very secure, its gated and the staff look out for you.  One day on a short trip out we left the safe open and only locked, not deadbolted the door.  The maid locked the safe for us, deadbolted the door and came up to us on our return to let us know we had left it open.  Very polite, nice people.
The nude section didn't interest us much, it's mostly out of shape 50+ year olds, 99% male.  Women were in thongs and topless all up and down the beach and there lots of european men in swim briefs and even 1 or 2 thongs.  The american men all in board shorts, but they are never more than half the population at orient beach.
I would recommend happy bay if you want less crowds.  It's a short 15 minute hike but the water is ultra clear and you can go nude if you like.  I think the short hike weeds out the egregiously out of shape, the people at happy bay that went nude were actually decent looking couples.

We stayed at the Alamanda two years ago,and are booked in again this April. We had a wonderful experience there. It is close to the Orient village which offers excellent dining,it was a 5 minute walk to the nude section. Much cheaper than Club Orient. It all depends what you are looking for.  We spent all of out time in the nude section, and both my wife and I wore G stings to gt from our rooms to the rocks that separate the nude section for textile. At that point the G strings came off. We spent a couple of evenings at the Papagayo restaurant at Club Orient. There was live music and we found there food to be very good. The first night we were on the island we had walked down there in the sunshine,so we had very little clothing with us. It was after dark when we wanted to leave. They didn't recommend walking back but called us a cab. it cost $10 us and he was fine with us being nearly nude. A few nights later we knew there would be live music. we left our room while it was still daylight and walked down the beach. This time my wife was a little more dolled up in a sheer dress. By the time the evening was over we were nude. The crowd varied from partially dressed to fully nude. No complaints either way. Check out traveltalkonline forum for St Martin. Lots of very informative information . Yes they got hit by Gonzalo, but it sounds like the beach if functioning very well.
