I am moving back to Germany this Spring and would like to know if there are any indoor swimming pools in the Frankfurt area where wearing thongs are common. I know that most pools in Germany have clothing and non-clothing areas where entire families swimming in the nude.  While I might swim in the nude on occasion I would prefer to wear a thong in the non-nude areas.  Is this common or should I stick to a simpy bikini?

Note, when doing your inquries,  the germans refer to thongs as strings.   Thong, in the men's section of the german version of ebay, pulls up less than 30 hits, on the other hand, string pulls up more than 1,500.

Thanks JM_Runs, you are right!  I should have remembered that what I call "thongs" are "strings " in Germany.  After all, I must have 50 Olaf Benz "strings"!!!

You better ask the specialists in Germany. Try the Forum at www.swimstrings.de
This is a very good website for the lovers of skimpy swimwear. The normal language is German, but they will reply to you in English. You may ask everything regarding swimming-pools in the Frankfurt area. But you have to be specific, there is a Frankfurt am Main (I guess this is the one) and a Frankfurt an der Oder.
As far as I know a moderate thong or string is OK at most pools, but there are some exceptions. A lot of pools have one or more evenings for FKK, that is nude recreation.

Last time I was in Germany I didn't take any swimwear, and when I went to the hotel they had an indoor pool.  I asked the hotel what the policy for swimming attire was and the girl at the desk said whatever I was confortable in.  I explained that I had no swimwear with me and that I only had G-string underwear so I was going to go buy something suitable for the pool area so that I could use the pool during my stay.  She told me that if I felt comfortable wear my G-string underwear that it was fine with the hotel. So I wore a N2N black net string to swim while there.

I recently visited Tanus Therme (near Frankfurt) http://www.taunus-therme.de/ and thonged there. It is definitely a family place and I didn't see another thong in sight on both man or woman but after overcoming my initial shyness and fear of being ejected I came out with my thong and slowly became more active and used all of the places facilities. I even dried my hair in my thong underwear whilst being surrounded by many fully-clothed females (I think it was a clothes only area). I caught many from the corner of my eye taking a peek. I got the recommendation from the German website posted earlier in this thread.

I have been nude in the middle of downtown Munich (Englishgarden...the Munich equivalent of Central Park).  Germans are amongst the nudest people on the face of the earth.  I saw several couples walking naked right down the sidewalk of the park.  Any lake I went to, there were people swimming nude as if it was the most normal thing in the world.  I cant imagine anywhere in Germany where wearing a thong would be a problem.

I'm going to have to go to Germany then - sounds great to me - to be able to be nude like that with others, anytime  anywhere

Sharon,When I was in Germany a few years back, they prohibited any clothing to include outside towels to enter there spa area. Once you entered the spa area they would give you a towel to sit on, but the walk from the locker room to the counter EVERYONE had to be completely naked.

Going naked in a spa / sauna / therme is absolutely normal.  Wearing any fabric (other than a towel) is strictly frowned upon and in some places, strictly forbidden. Walking naked from the locker room to the Spa area is pretty much normal.

Now don't get too excited...not everyone who goes to a spa has a beautiful body.  However, beautiful bodies, particularly those that are provocatively displayed before you do have a tendency of causing instant erections.

Oh and before you ask, erections are also not frowned upon.  I've walked around with a stiffie several times and all  I tend to get is smiles and the odd compliment.

I've been a naturist for almost 40 years. men walking around displaying an XXX do nothing but give nudist/thongers a bad reputation. Stop it, nobody wants to see it in that setting. Popeye

I have been to the Holiday Inn in downtown Mannheim.  I saw a man drop his shorts and jump in the pool and swim nude.  There was a woman reading a book on a pool chair (not with the man).  She didn't react.  I just kept swimming.  The women I saw swim wore one piece suits.  I saw other men swimming at different times.  They all wore speedo type (not skimpy).  I think maybe it's normal there to swim nude.  The pool area was a sauna and pool.  Next time I will bring my Rio bikini to swim in.  I think no one will complain about a thong but you may be the only one.  Maybe more common to swim nude??

Hi, I just came back from a midweek holiday at Victor's residenz Schlossberg in Germany. As it schould be, everyone was naked at the sauna (no stiffs however!). It is pure natural to go naked for everyone. At the pool there was no nude swimming but thongs were ok. I got in the pool everyday only wearing my swimthong from "Hom" ;-)

I would be self conscious about the total nudity in the spa.  I have no pubic hair lol

My wife and myself are also bold ;-) In Europe it is very common to shave the pubic hair. The Germans are very tolerant.

Kawasaki, what you say is so true.  On holiday in Crete, it was mostly Germans at the resort our college alumni archeology tour group stayed at.  At the sauna we were packed in like sardines, men and women both, nobody with a stitch on.  I think they were surprised to learn I was an American, somehow freed of our Victorian strictures.

I wonder, though, does "It is pure natural to go naked for everyone" mean they are all nudists?  Were they all nudists that I shared the sauna with?  I'm hoping not, that European sauna behavior is separate and apart from the nudist lifestyle, that it's rather an example of greater body acceptance by average Europeans as contrasted to average Americans.  I'm proud to be an American, but this is one area I feel more like a European.  And I think that's independent of whether I'm a nudist or not -- my jury is still out on that one.

SlidingG,
your thinking is correct. Being naked in the sauna doesn't mean they are all nudists. It is only a matter of common sence to go naked in the sauna. (a unwritten rule allover Europe). Nevertheless: Germans are the greatest group to go on nudist (naturist) resorts on holiday........

Re:Swimming Pools in Germany

Hi there, being German and living in Frankfurt I feel I have to add something to the previous posts. Being naked in Saunas and Spas has mainly one reason: it is more hygenic. Wearing swimwear in a sauna or steam bath is definitely not adecuate. A towel to sit on is enough. When walking around the spa you are normally asked to wear your towel around your hips. Although Germans do not feel uncomfortable walking around nude in a Spa, we know that not all species are made for displaying their assets to the crowd. Unfortunately, mainly elderly people tend to loose the habit to cover themselves with a towel when walking around. My recommendation for all American/AngloSaxon visitors to German Spas and Sauna facilities in pools or Hotels is to please be prepared to strip down and enjoy a relaxed stay in the spa. However, please always bring (or ask staff for) big towels on which you can sit and wear around your hips. You will enjoy feeling the freedom of being naked. This applies not only to Germany, but also to some other countries where saunas are often used: Northern and Central Europe. With regards to thongs at public pools, lakes or the sea shore, you should be aware that wearing a modest thong will mostly be ok, but please do not wear too skimpy G-Strings. It may only be that some teenanger groups comment on you and make fun of you. In general, the people here are very tolerant. In the public opinion it is very much common that a guy wearing thongs is gay. Although most gays in Germany do not wear thong swimwear!

ahe2fra, I know when I was in Germany that most of the pools and spa's I visited I was told to remove my clothing before entering the pool and sauna area, and everyone must shower prior to entering the pool. As you said it was explained to me that nude was more hygienic, and it also reduced the amount of chemical needed to sanitize the pool. I had a towel with me and just followed the others and sat on it when I needed too, with one exception where I went no one walked around with towels around their waist everyone just went to and from the pool area nude and usually left their towel either hanging on a hook when not sitting.

I have been to Germany and most of Europe and have never worn anything larger than a
thong swimsuit in the pools.  Only once in the London area, I was asked to cover my
rear with a towel when walking around.  Other than that, thongs or g-strings is all I take
and all I will wear.  At saunas, mostly nude with a towel to sit on.

I've only been to one swimming pool in Germany so I can't state that this is usual, but the spa pool in Konstanz is a great facility. I saw one girl in a thong walking around looking comfortable. A woman in a cheeky bikini and one in a cheeky one-piece. Other than that, no men, as usual. I suspect that wearing a modest thong would be fine anywhere, especially for women.

It's common to see men in thongs at most of indoor swimming pool in Germany, they call them "Therme", they are usually centers with indoor, outdoor pools and sauna. I used to go to "Wischlingen" when I was living in Germany (Dortmund). Every time I see at least one other man in thong.

I respect your greater experience rayan85, but "at least one other man in a thong" doesn't make me think it's common - just acceptable. Personally, that suits me; I want to be a bit different, but not be made to feel that I'm a threat to others. As I type that, I realise how ridiculous it must sound :)

matchingthongs; Doesn't sound ridiculous at all. At public pools, as opposed to many beaches, we are at the mercy of the manager who is likely to be influenced by what other patrons say. The last thing we want is for someone to feel morally threatened and complain. As one who has been the only guy sunning in a g-string (or thong for that matter) on every one of my 438 pool visits, your view sounds eminently logical.
