Have just holidayed there this year with my wife. Wore only my thong at the pool and on the beach and had no problem at all. In fact found it was well received. Love the Thai people, beaches, food, culture and attitude. Very welcoming. If you are going there and want to thong it, go for it! :-)

For Thailand..
Find yourself a nice US$25+ beach resort on south coast Koh Phangnan with a fan, add a bit more for the air con, a place like the Blue Parrot.
Email the owner and confirm thong use.
Get on the plane and fly!!!
Get you back side into a "G" and tan the rear end!

On Samui now. The weather's not great, but getting in some sun each day. Anyone else about? There used to be a beach north of Chaweng that was quite sparsely populated and good for xtreme wear or even naturism. There are resorts there now, but did it move somewhere else?

@farmm002

The Pavilions in Cherngtalay is a couples oriented resort with a very nice pool and a shuttle service to one of the nicest and secluded beaches in Phuket - Layan beach. If the resort pool and beach isn't good enough, every villa is a pool villa so every option is covered unless you're travelling solo...

I've not been yet, but going in mid February for a week. They take single people, which is not always possible at clothing optional resorts. I did specifically ask them about that. I'll put a report on after I've been there. I'm just hoping the troubles, mainly in Bangkok have subsided by the time I go. I thonged last year on Koh Lipe, a small island in the south, with no problems.

I'm in Thailand now and can tell that thongs are O.K just about anywhere. For hotel pools just email the manager first.  I have had many positive responses and when declined its always children issues.
Koh Samui is just one long strip of big hotels. Many nicer beaches and lower priced hotels on Koh Phangan.
I complement thong beaches with clothing optional and use "ISwimNude" iPhone App and do add new places in Thailand as I find them.
Good luck, Andy

I just returned from a month in Thailand finishing with a week on Phuket. Phuket has a huge number of Russian, Swedish and German visitors, particularly escaping the Northern winter, and nudity is no shock to them. On most beaches there was at least one other random female in a string, thong or rolled up bikini rear so as to be thong like. Sadly, I didn't see another male - but there were no objections  (Me a non fat 62YO)

One the pool attendants saw, I wasn't signalled to leave the place or anything. Did a few laps, no issues.

There are no beaches in Bangkok, but you can thong in your hotel pool, usually there is no problem but you may ask the hotel staff before you do so. Or you may take a 2-hour coach ride to Hua Hin, but I think you don't need to go as you are going to Phuket and Koh Samui.
Basically you can thong in any beach in Phuket and Koh Samui without any problem, local people are friendly. Phuket is a huge island if you want some serenity and don't want to receive stares from fellow tourists, please avoid busy beaches esp. Patong, lots of other quiet options around the whole island.

Every time we (wife and I) have been there we have found the whole area to be completely Thong friendly. I've thonged all over, on beaches and in pools, at all hotels and found no issue ever. I was the only guy most of the time but the girls were also often in things. Particularly the Europeans. Americans tend to b a lot more conservative/hung up on their whole body image thing.

Just come back from thailand. Went to few places, koh Phangan, koh Samui and koh Nangyuan. Everyone surround seems don't care i'm in thong and string some time. Stay at Dakanda Villa Beach Resort, Koh Phangan for four nights. Have swimming pool and next to the beach. Already e-mail them before booking and they are thong and string friendly. Everyday i just wear thong or string in the swimming pool and the beach. Going for snorkeling tour trip to Koh Nangyuan, just use thong swimwear and nobody seems care about it. At Samui, stay at Chaweng Beachomber Hotel. Also have swimming pool and next to the beach. This place also thong and string friendly.

Thailand is pretty O.K with thongs, but a baggie is probably pushing the limits! You would certainly be the only one on a Phuket beach! On Koh Phangan you would be O.K as it's more laid back.In Thailand also consider that if you book a "Private Pool Villa" that these often have no privacy walls and are open to public view!Andy

My wife and I will be on vacation in Thailand next year. We'll stay in Pattaya / Koh Chang one week each.
Following this thread I already know wearing thongs will probably be no issue there.
Because it's the first time wearing thong bikinis for my wife (and she's a bit shy about it) we would like to visit places where she's not the only one wearing thongs.
Koh Larn seems like the place to go near Pattaya but do you have any suggestions for Koh Chang?
White Sand Beach? Lonely Beach?

It seems like there are plenty of thong-friendly venues on the beach. However, one "amenity" that seems missing is adults only! I can't tell you how many times we've stayed at places with features just for kids and the brats are are still on the loose; running, screaming and carrying-on in the adult areas. We raised two kids and now it's _OUR_ time and I won't apologize about it.It seems like all the more upscale places go out of their way for kids.

Amen Pikeman. Wife and I look for mainly adults only because it is OUR TIME too! Kids almost always mean no thong, no quiet, no peace, no privacy.

I'm looking for recommendations for quieter resorts for later this year!
Wife and I are going for two weeks to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary, and leaving our kids at home!!!
Looking for somewhere preferably right on the beach, but close to town, and where I can thong no problems at the resort.

Suggestions please!

Hi Thongmad, We have been going to Koh Samui for years since 1998 and apart from one year have always stayed at the Chaweng Blue Lagoon Resort. Chaweng Beach is a very long beach and the Blue lagoon is on the northern part within the lagoon so very safe and calm. The water here is very shallow, it takes a 100 yard walk to get up to you chest, but you can lay down in clear luke warm water just by the beach. I am The G String wearer of the family my wife never has. The Blue Lagoon has a great pool and is on a very quiet beach, I have never had any problem in all the years in wearing a G String here around the pool or beach. It's the best of both worlds, tea on the beach with the sea lapping up to your table or a short few minutes walk along the road to the main drag and bars. I've uploaded a few photos on my profile for you to see.

Re:Thailand - Thong friendly?

 Hey all :)

Few months late but better late than never? I just wanted to share the experience I had with my girl at the Sanctuary on Haad Tien Beach, and also our week on Koh Tao island.

We stayed first at Sanctuary, and unfortunately the airline lost our bags with all our thong swimsuits in them for the first 4 days of our trip, so I lived in tight fitted silk boxers, which was comfy but finally our bags arrived and it was heaven <3. We're both young and fit, for the record and I love swimming (as a true Cancerian ;)). I converted her to thongs before trip and ordered us both new suits before we left, from brigitewear. I got two, modest low-rise thongs for myself in blue and black, and for her bought a topless one piece thong, a normal one piece thong and two thong bikinis. Once our bags came, we quickly suited up and hit the beach and became fast fixtures there. Sanctuary has a super chill vibe and attitude but nonetheless, there weren't too many other thongs besides us two, so we got tons of attention. (totally okay with that) As I mentioned, I didn't thong for the first 4 days, so after my first day thonging everyone (Thai resort staff especially) looked at me a little different, but eventually it kinda wore off and everyone knew me just for being a chillin' Canadian guy :)

The scene on Haad Tien beach is really awesome, as is nearby Haad Rin and Haad Yuan. Every day at Sanctuary I would swim out past the rocks in my thong, 2 or 3 times a day, but the GF would usually only join me for an afternoon swim. This left me feeling for the most part totally in the spot light as I entered and left the water and walked off the beach in my thong, as everyone definitely watched me (GF told me this from her vantage point). Tons of guys in minimal speedos, and I think a few of them wished they had brought a thong, girls mostly topless in bikini bottoms but the occasional thong. Spent a few hours on Haad Rin beach killing time during our transits on and off the island and it's alot more commercial, more people and we saw alot more fellow thongers there. Haad Tien in comparison is more secluded, smaller, intimate, and with a better sense of community. Also, best parties ever. Any and all mind-altering substances available, total Full-Moon party vibe, and the New Year's bash went a full 2 days after NYE. We greeted the sun NYD as it rose over the ocean, on the beach under a perfectly clear sky, with hundreds of other people.

A few days later we went over to Koh Tao to do some Scuba diving and just generally chill out. We stayed at the Koh Tao hillside resort which is a fair distance away from the main area of Sarri Beach. The resort was nice, it had its own pool, and a long pier which had a small area for sunning and jumping into the sea at the end. Felt totally comfortable in our thongs all day, got a good sunburn as well. We headed down to Sarri Beach a few days during the week and really enjoyed the vibe there. Sarri Cottage pizza has free Wifi extending onto the beach so it was radical just playing on our iphones, catching up, in thongs. The water is really shallow on Sarri beach, and you can basically go snorkelling right off the beach. The bottom transitions from sand to coral at about 5' depth. We did some scuba diving and wore wetsuits over our thongs, but as soon as the boat got back to the beach, we quickly reverted to our natural state. There were a few other thongs, some older folks from Belgium appreciated us wearing our suits so carelessly as they were thonging as well.

All told, our time in thailand was amazing and we've already booked to go back next year. NYE 2017 at Haad Tien, thongs out. See ya there :)

Just came back not too long ago from Koh Lanta...check my blog out...klong jark beach was the main stay place, bamboo beach and ao nui bay was where I wore....nothing to a small baggie suit....even had a massage by the beach at ao nui bay in my baggie....plus went nude at bamboo bay and Ao Nui bay.....loved the experience....as it was a thongcation...so g string sun up to sun down...even in a snorkeling trip out...just wore a t shirt on the boat with nothing else but a g string....walked the besch at klong jark in my g string...from hut to beach likewise.. rode a scooter either in my baggie or a g string with a shirt on and nothing else to get to the beaches...went snorkling and fed fishes from the beaches in either a gstring then my baggie.....find me on flickr...bare4all.... for some pics of my adventure.....now am planning Koh Phangan as the next destination for a thongcation.....
Koh lanta has lots of Swedes and european tourists community, laid back and not in a rush plus tolerant....and best part is everyone wants a good tan. Good fresh seafood and great Thai dishes....

Re:Thailand - Thong friendly?

I was in Bangkok for a few days and stayed at a Novotel hotel.
I went to the pool after breakfast and put on a new neon green thong I had never wear before.
Took a few dips in the pool and walked around the small pool area enjoying the view and laid down on my lounger.
I went to the restroom after a dip and in the mirror I could see that my thong was a little bit see through, not much but you could see my skin color under the green neon. The pouch was more protruding than I first realized too and you could see all my contours. My heart started beating heavy as I was thinking that the other people at the pool would have seen this too.
I was thinking to myself; well now they have seen it already so no need to change or feel shy now. So I went back out to the pool, took a few more dips and walked around again as I had done earlier.
By a chance I looked up at the hotel and I saw a woman come to one of the windows on the floor just above the pool looking straight at me and smiling a very big smile. I guess her partner (who I did not see) had seen me and told her that she needed to come and see this guy walking around in a thong down at the pool.
The others at the pool was cool with my thong too. There were two couples, one older man and one middle aged woman. All was always looking my direction when they did not think I was looking. The middle aged woman saw me looking at here while she was looking at me and smiled at me.
After one hour a gang of three Indian men came to the pool and I could feel a bit hostility towards me but nothing outspoken.
Just when I was about to leave four Thai young women came to the pool. They sat down at the entrance to the pool so when I walked past them in my thong and my towel in my hand I looked back and smiled at them. They were staring their eyes out...?

Re:Thailand - Thong friendly?

Spent a few days in Krabi Ao Nang Beach. Quite a number of girls in cheeky bikini and thong, but the majority of girls were in traditional bikinis or one piece. Men are mostly in big dork shorts, very difficult to see speedos except some middle aged ones. Nearly all young men were in dork shorts.
I was the only man in thong (iSwim, BODYART good looking underwear, and HOM ressec string), my girl friend was in traditional bikini. It went fine and I got nice thong tan line after a few days, except one local young man selling drinks on the beach gave a funny face towards my butt when I was facing down. I did not noticed that because it was my girlfriend who saw that and told me afterwards.
I agree that the fact is, men in thong are normal for tourists from other parts of the world, giggles and funny faces are always from local people.
One other day I went to an excursion where you can swim in a natural pool. I changed to a Joe Snyder cheeky bikini and a group of teenage boys, I guess from Mid-east or India I am not sure, just laughed behind me when I went out from the water. Again, it was my girlfriend who told me about that, as I just felt nothing and quite comfortable in the outfit. I really do not understand how the group of teenage boys can swim in thick cotton shorts, or even half cut jeans. You just can't move at all !
You can check out my profile page for some photos taken in Krabi.

AVBW21 don't worry about these young guys they are just immature and come from a country where unfortunately religion and cultural upbringing have not yet reached the free thinking of the western world,it's not there fault. I'm from Australia and no one gives a shit what you wear to the beach as long as you are respectful to other people. I would not wear my small g strings anywhere near families and children. I have worn g strings at many places in Thailand, Phuket, Hua Hin, Pattaya, and Koh Samui, both on the beach and the hotels I've stayed in. I'm going back to Koh Samui in March. Keep on wearing your Thongs or G Strings.

I returned recently from Thailand and I would definitely say it's thong friendly. I didn't see many other guys in thongs or g's, but lots of women in g's, lots and lots in thongs and even more with cheekies, or pulled up to make thong. I stayed on 3 islands and had day trips to others. I wore a thong all the time I was there. I wore a g on several occasions. No adverse comments, but definitely some admiring glances from females. Nobody really bothers about what you're wearing. Only one negative siting, a guy with a small thong on, standing knee deep in the sea, for quite a long time, looking around continuously for attention. I nearly said something to him, but didn't. I felt temporarily uncomfortable while this guy was standing flaunting himself. Apart from that I felt comfortable wearing a thong or g. As has been said many times before, just carry on as normal and our choice of swimwear is perfectly acceptable. Where thongs and g's are in the minority  I would not wear see through or baggies. Also, I would be discreet and not walk around in a thong if local families are around in places like Thailand.
