I have a similar question, but with the surrounding lakes in Austin.  Hippie Hollow is cool, but need something more.

Other than Hippy Hollow and lake Travis in general, the only place I know where thongs are acceptable is Barton Springs. It is also topless for the ladies.

I'm not certain you will actually find a thong friendly hotel in San Antonio, or a thong tolerant hotel for that matter.
My wife and I have been to SA many times and we've never seen female thongers, much less male thongs in any of the hotel pools. My wife has gone with a rio bottom in the hotel pool but not less and that got plenty of stares from both sides. I've seen twentysomethings pull their bottom into a thong while laying out but never while up and walking around. SA is pretty conservative in my opinion but hey, doesn't mean we have to be.
Take the advice some others gave in a different post and just work your way down a little at a time (Speedo, rio, then thong) and you will find you are well, tolerated.

Mako and Sipper, my husband sandman is correct in labeling San Antonio as a conservative city especially if you are just males thonging alone. San Antonio's closest beach is 2 hrs away so it's not a population used to swim suits much less skimpy suits. If your group will include women thongers then you should have less of a problem but I do agree that starting modestly and working to your skimpier items is the best approach to seeing how friendly or tolerant the hotel will be.

I have worn thongs at hotels in both San Antonio and Austin. I have had mixed reactions but for the most part would have to say that after the initial surprise of a thong most people dont mind, after all we are still wearing clothes.
If anyone wants to rent a room together and have a thong pool part let me know. I will often rent a room just to use the pool and catch up on my tan.

Susan,I just got back from wearing my G-string in the hotel hot tub, sorry couldn't do the gradual step down to a thong since I don't own any Rio's, Speedo's, or regular thongs.  So I had to go straight to the Black G-string because that is all I have with me. Didn't encounter anyone so I had no problems.

tangathong, the area lakes are thong tolerant if you're on a boat, that kinda says it all. Most area lakes here in Dallas have tiny beach areas and the overcrowding in itself makes for poor tolerance. Even for women we've found it not a great atmosphere so we go out on a boat and out on the water the boaters are extremely more tolerant for both men and women thongers. hope that helped!

I've been busy and missed the San Antonio posts.  I have thonged at several SA hotels, and Randy has also when he's been down there alone on "business".  The same rules apply here as apply to most areas.  If it's an upscale hotel/motel and it caters to business travel and international travelers especially, thongs probably are okay.  Send them the "I am going to visit SA and am looking for a hotel (or motel) where I can wear my thong swimwear..." email.  Say it matter of factly and put their room and your visit to their establishment (especially if it is going to be for several days) on the line.  Emphase that you wear "thong swimwear" by using that term whenever mentioning that you wear thongs or want to get answers about thongs.  Most places in SA or anywhere else in the US or Canada will not have an issue.  Then enjoy the trip.  Neither Randy or I have had issues either when visiting SA alone or together.  Wear your thong as others would wear any other swimwear.  Don't shy away from others or try to hide your thong.  Don't make unneeded trips past others at the pool so they are sure to see your thong.  This is especially true when you stay at a place where lots of rooms have views of the pool area.  Both Randy and I have had attendants come out to check towels, or just to walk through the pool area.  I assume this was to make sure our swimwear wasn't too suggestive, but at the three places in SA we have stayed at, there has never been an issue at any of them.  These attendants usually just ask us "is the water temperature okay" or "do you need anything" or "are you having a nice afternoon" or something like that, then go away.

A side note on SA -- if you fly in, make sure you get to the airport early for your return trip.  Partly because of airport security, and partly because planes out of SA seem to be extrordinarilly over booked, especially in the afternoon on Thursday or Friday.  Last summer there was major construction at the SA airport, and this made things even worse.  The airlines do not give out major perks to those who get bumped, just a room, a meal, and maybe an upgrade to first class the next day.

Austin is very thong friendly.  Never had a problem in any hotel.  Used to live there and thonged at the apt pool all the time.

Austin is very very open minded.  You can thong anywhere you like.  Any hotel.   I have done so myself.  Never had a problem.

Some of the hotels I have never had a problem are Renaissance hotel and Holiday Inn  at arboretum.   And generally any hotel in Austin area.  In Austin no one really cares as long as there are no complaints.

A few years back we thonged at the Austin Motel (https://austinmotel.com/), with no problems. They didn't let my wife use the pool top-free though. The manager said there's no law against it, however some guests have complained. For late night swims by ourselves, this didn't seem to be an issue.
