I've decided to go to Okinawa this summer for a variety of reasons, distance and costs among them since I live in Taiwan. I know Okinawa has lots of coastline (and not much radiation ^_^) but I've heard the Japanese don't find thongs acceptable. I'm going to take my mountain bike on a boat so I can find secluded places, but there are no guarantees.

They prefer to be in a private environment, and they do not like to stand out. But I'd say that Japan is more sexually open than countries like Korea and China. Just by looking at their AV industry, you can tell that Japan is very open-minded towards sex. But, people tend to enjoy these things in private, and they rarely express their sexuality in public. If you want to wear a thong on the beach in Japan, you should go to Okinawa. Okinawa is where the U.S base is, so it's more westernized than other parts of Japan. Also, the island is very tropical, so it's perfect for thonging.

I wouldn't wear a thong at a waterpark in Japan. I hear that some establishments are not friendly towards people with tattoos, so thongs would not be welcome either.

Square cuts are the norm for locals (youth/middle aged). There is no such thing was a non traditional onsen. The male/female combined onsens/spas are still clothing free and separate of one another. Only the common area is mixed where closed robes are required. I did wear my thong in the locker room while preparing to enter the onsen, but was nude in the onsen. My thong exposure was brief and of no consequence. I've been to 5 onsens, from fully traditional to mixed/spa. Interesting experience, but not something I'd plan a trip around. Ediquite (sp) is highly important. Japan is an incredible country and experience.

Thongs for men are also sold openly in many department stores around Japan. So in that sense, no one would bat an eyelid if you were to wear a thong in the locker room. I'd be wary about swimming pools, however, as many Japanese pools have strict rules on swimming costumes (swimming caps are important).

I have several colors, including some with the mesh material. I have worn the solid colors at all beaches in Volusia County, FL (Daytona Beach area) and at the wave pools in Pittsburgh. They are extreme suits, not for the timid. Yes, they are small suits, but they don't allow for the package to be pushed up and out like with the missile and torpedo styles. I hope to wear them more in 2026.
