Looking for cooler climate than FLA ... been spoiled by Canaveral National Seashore all these decades. Had my 'nude' years surf fishing but like my thong triangle tanline's .... my brain feel's its more Kinky :) Took road trip up to Carolina's (Wilmington area) two weeks ago. Compared to Florida beach access/parking seemed so finite & the beach development is eyesore. Assume more options if i owned a boat for thong wear. Appreciate any semi remote beaches & state parks which are thong friendly !

Try Bird Island near Sunset Beach.  It is @a 2 mile walk or bike ride from the 40th cross over to the west.  T&T is legal on the reserve. (At least on the NC section of the reserve.

I have found the North Carolina Cape Hatteras seashore beaches to be very thong tolerant. Several good places are on Pea Island just over the Bonner Bridge.  Further down there are beaches before,  at,  and after the Cape Hatteras lighthouse.
On several occasions I have talked to the lifeguards at the beach right at the lighthouse and asked about thongs. I always got a positive answer. In fact they even confirmed that top free was permitted there.

While I have worn thongs at all these beaches, I found that I saw the most thongs, top free and even nude beachgoers on Ocracoke Island.

At the lifeguarded beach, I do walk south of the highly populated beach, but not too far, usually just in front of the lighthouse. From that point I can set up not too close to anyone and walk up and down the beach in my thong along with all the other beach walkers. I try and show that wearing a thong is perfectly normal and always smile and speak to people I pass.

At Canadian Hole, just before the lighthouse on the sound side, I have worn thongs to shower off with no problems. I would like to see more thongs on the beach there.

The only beach you can’t wear a thong at in NC is Kure beach, as they have an ordinance specifically prohibiting them.

Anywhere on the outer banks is fine, but you’ll probably see WAY more girls than guys wearing them. Don’t let that stop you though-I have worn a thong on all of the nc beaches from Corolla through hatteras with no problems at all. I am able to walk the beaches freely, and talk to others on many occasions.

The main thing to remember is to maintain a confident attitude and not be weird about anything you do. Your thong is simply a bathing suit. Don’t get in the mindset that it gives you any right to say or do anything you wouldn’t otherwise! Have fun and let me know if you ever find yourself up here!

Masonboro Island just north of Carolina beach is an option too.  Miles of uninhabited beach, but need to access only by boat or kayak.

Sunset Beach in NC also has an ordinance against thong swimwear. However, Bird Island (next to Sunset) is state land so thongs & g-strings are legal.

Hey Lindros, Are you gonna come back to NC? Just to reiterate, Sunset Beach has an ordinance against thongs, however, the new cheeky style suits I've seen the girls wearing is going to make enforcement difficult.  Anyway cabanas and tents seem to be more of an issue for the town council to deal with.

Yes Barefoot i knew OBX was fine but unless you live in Elizabeth City that's kind of an odyssey unless your staying overnight.

Since i was 23 i've either been nude or just about nude in Canaveral National Seashore, South Fla 1994-99, and Santa Barbara 1989-94. Almost hassle free experience. Cool thing about California was the 'marine layer/fog' during Summer months. I would go nude hiking in the mountains behind Santa Barbara. It was awesome the overcast conditions. According to nofashionpolice site its legal to wear thongs in State parks in Georgia, North & South Carolina. Apparently allowed to hike nude in National Parks & Forests as well --- in less traveled areas. Thanks everyone for your input.

TBACK59  On the Island you need to be in the coastal reserve.   From the 40th crossover it is @1/2 mile WEST   (towards the rock jetty & South Carolina) There is a fairly large sign that says Coastal Reserve next to a smaller sign that says to keep off the dunes.  West beyond this point towards the Kindred Spirit mailbox and past is the coastal reserve.  There used to be an inlet there called the Mad River Inlet that filled in in the early 90's but is still shown on many maps.  Hope this helps.  I plan to be out there this weekend.Lester

I've posted about my experiences and knowledge before on here in regards to NC beaches and wearing thongs but thought I might add my two cents to this post. NC State Parks are tolerant of thong and g-string wearing as long as they are not lude ie. sheer, see-through or expose to much of you know what. There are multiple state park beaches were I thong without issue from rangers. Fort Macon, Fort Fisher, Hammocks Beach and inland at Jordan Lake and Falls Lake.
As with any location, you just have to be weary of families and conservative folks who might be upset. With the popularity of thongs and cheeky swimwear for women now being mainstream, I have seen many more females wearing thongs this spring and last year at our beaches.

My experience is the same for most of the Outer Banks. I have thonged or stringed in Nags Head, Hatteras, Ocracoke many times. And Wrightsville Beach is a voyuers dream. It's often packed with girls in skimpy bun baring suits. I have thonged there in recent years in the middle of a crowded beach. I don't walk around like I do in Florida but I will lay out in a chair or on a towel with just a thong - no issues.

To my knowledge, Kure Beach is the only beach with ordinances against thongs, but they are welcome in Carolina Beach to the north and Fort Fisher to the south.

Thonglife,Sunset Beach has ordinances against topless and thongs, but walk @ 1/2 mile west past the 40th street crossover and you are on the Bird Island Coastal Reserve which is marked by a big sign on the dune line.  Once past that, you are on STATE property.   I would go a little further past the sign, just because of the all the families that tend to set up at 40th.  I have noted that there a lot more thong/cheeky suits on young girls on the Sunset Beach proper, than on the reserve.

Thanks Marty for the info. I have known about Bird Island for at least a decade but never seem to find the time to make it down that way or to Sunset Beach. I will make the effort this summer hopefully.

Can anyone here explain or summarize the rules in South Carolina concerning the wearing thong swimwear in public? Thanks.

Thongs are legal under SC state law.

HOWEVER #1... there are a number of coastal cities that have local ordinances which prohibit them (eg., Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, etc...). I have worn g-strings at Huntington Beach State Park (20 minutes south of Myrtle) with no issues and I checked with the Park Ranger who checked with the Georgetown police.

HOWEVER #2 ... South Carolina is in the heart of the Bible Belt and if you do find a coastal city where they are not prohibited you may get encounter intolerant folks, rednecks & drunks, and you certainly won't encounter others wearing minimal swimwear.

If you live in the Northeastern part of SC, then it's better to drive 30-40 minutes to Bird Island just over the SC/NC border. G-strings are totally legal here and you'll find others here either in skimpy swimwear or nude.

I went to Ft. Fisher and Ft. Macon several times last summer with no problems. They are legal there. Ft. Fisher is my favorite. I get the drive permit and park down by the marsh and fish in my g or thong until the tide goes out. After that it's mudsliding/ mudbath time, sometimes nude. Now, that's fun.

I was walking down the boardwalk in downtown Myrtle Beach Sunday afternoon and two ladies were walking towards me in fairly skimpy bikinis. After they passed by me I turned around and much to my surprise they were both wearing thong bottoms!! Didn't notice any police near by so guess they got away with it, but also surprisingly is nobody really seemed to care. Maybe folks are becoming less stuffy in Myrtle. Wonder how much the local ordinance is really enforced. Supposedly the officer can simply give them a warning at first.

It still is against they law in Myrtle Beach , but if you are a guy and see a babe in a thong are you going to call the law? Nope. If you are a fit women in a bikini and see the same babe in a thong you will wish you had the guts to be her.  It is the out of shape women that bitch about the fine babes in the slender suits that gives them the bad press.

Yesterday I saw a girl walking in what I’d call a thong on Bird Island to the jetty and back I did not see any kind of coverup, so unless they had set up just at the town limits, I’m going to assume they started off in Sunset Beach. I also saw a different girl from the 40th crossover looking back towards the pier in what I’d call a thong. She was definitely on the Sunset Beach strand. If you visit and park on the street, make absolutely sure your tires are completely off the pavement. I saw several cars with tickets between 32nd and 40th.
