Figure I'll throw in my Hawaii report from over the summer. Wife and I went and stayed 100% on Maui. Not the big island but didn't know where else to put this. Our hotel was on Kaanapali beach which while being very nice, is mostly families. With that being said, my wife wore a thong every single day and I wore trunks. Even with my wife wearing a true g-string at the hotel pool and beach in Kaanapali, no one said a word. We saw a couple girls in true thongs, lots of cheeky, couple men in trunks like myself but no thongs. My wife even wore a semi-sheer micro bikini with g-string back one day and no one said anything. We talked about her taking her top off but just decided against it. Just far too many families and kids. It is, in fact, legal for women to tan topless on ANY public beach throughout all the Hawaiian Islands but it just did not feel right.

To get our nudity fix, we decided to check out "Secret Beach" in Pa'ia. We debated Little Beach but it was rumored at the time that it was still closed for COVID restrictions. "Pa'ia Secret Beach" was about the same distance from our hotel as Little Beach so it was a win. Let me tell you...it was one of the best experiences we've ever had on a nude beach. The nude section is maybe a 5 min, level and easy walk from the lot. The section to the left (when facing the water) of the WWII bunker near the water is the nude part which is where you enter the beach from the lot. It's an unofficial but locally/generally accepted nude beach and very accessible. Meaning: When visiting, 75% or more of the sunbathers are going to be nude or topless but it's not "zoned" a nude beach like Gunnison, Haulover, Blacks Beach, etc. We arrived and immediately noticed it was a relatively younger crowd around the same age as us, mostly nude, with sort of a hippy vibe. The beach is basically walled off by two small rock jetties, one of which I mentioned. The jetty to the far left, opposite the one with the bunker, there is a path leading to another, clothed, beach on the other side behind some trees. As mentioned, the jetty with the bunker on it to the right side of the beach also divides it from another clothed section. The beach is essentially placed between two clothed beaches. 

Wife and I tanned nude and walked around nude the entire day. It was quite interesting because while most of the crowd was younger and completely nude, you would have families coming up the beach and sometimes setting up to watch the sea turtles that would come up on the beach to sun themselves. It was sort of funny watching groups come from the clothed side on the left above the jetty, out of the woods, and the first thing they saw was my wife and I tanning nude right next to the jetty. There were definitely a few folks who had never seen people tanning nude before but they acted appropriately. Seemed like the men especially liked sea turtles that day but being my wife was near them I can't blame them. On that note, everyone is cool and accepting. We chatted with a few people. Two separate single guys came up to chat and ultimately, compliment my wife, which I am used to. They were respectful and asked me first if it was OK for them to come up and chat. One of them hung out for a while, went to the water with us, then went on his way. Another one, who seemed to frequent the beach, we asked about it being an unofficial nude beach. He said the only time the cops ever showed up was for drug use and once or twice when there was sexual activity in the open. He said other than that, they occasionally stop by to make sure everyone is behaving and go on their way, leaving all the nude bathers alone. We saw everything from young nude couples to young and older nude (seemingly) same-sex couples. There were a few single males. One gave off gawker vibes as he walked by my wife, being fully clothed. He got his look and kept moving when we paid him no mind. Didn't see any male thongs but then again, I don't see why you'd want to wear a thong because it was a nude beach anyway. We saw one woman with her boyfriend who tanned topless in a thong, but that was it. Surprisingly, there were a lot of single females tanning completely nude by themselves. It really was a very, very cool nude beach. The turtles sunning themselves on the beach added to the ambiance and opposite the water was a thick grove of trees and palms that gave it a lot of privacy.

The other nude beach on Maui is known as "Hana Red Sand Beach" and is located at the end of "The Road to Hana" which is another must see/do. It is supposedly absolutely beautiful, very private, but extremely difficult to access. It is completely isolated at the end of The Road to Hana which we did do as a road trip. However, the trail to access the beach itself at the end of the road is supposedly a very scary and precarious hiking trail with cliff drop-offs in which hikers are often in need of rescue. We really, really wanted to check this out. We had an awesome time on Pa'ia Secret Beach and wanted to keep the fun going but we figured it was too much of a physical risk. 

Maui, in general, is very nude-tolerant outside the resorts. For example, we took a few road trips. One of them we found ourselves on the NE side of Maui on the rocky (and somewhat treacherous) NE shore. We were planning to take some hikes that day. My wife was wearing a thong bikini set under her shorts/shirt. The trails themselves weren't too busy so my wife decided to hike in the thong bikini set and I stripped down to trunks. On the trail there were some very scenic spots in which my wife had an impromptu photoshoot in her thong bikini. We hiked down to the water. As I mentioned it was very rocky and steep so there was no actual water access but it was a great place to tan. After seeing the area was mostly quiet, with only a few hikers, and being legal for women to tan topless; my wife took her top off. She tanned topless the entire time. Hiking groups came by, said hello, and that was it.
