One of my most recent friends was coming out to me that he is part of a fandom where people love anamorphic animals, better known as furries. He is somewhat open telling people about it.

I don't see it as much of my thing, but I also don't seem to hate it. In fact, I took time to listen to my friend about the misconceptions. I found some similarities between the stigmas that people have for the furry fandom, in the same way that people view thong wearers; like they think joining either of the two, if male, is a "gay thing". sometimes the other way around, like people will say thongs are for women only, while saying furries are males only.

I just want to know what others think about the furry fandom? If not, does anyone know of other weird fandoms and what are their thoughts about it?

P.S. My friend also doesn't mind about my thonging and says I should stand up for what I like to wear.

I’m not sure I understand the furries thing... What I’ve been told is it’s some way to engage in sexual fantasy with anonymity... Is that correct? Guess I just don’t “get it,”so to speak. And if it’s because dressing up like an animal gets them off, then I really don’t “get” that.

First,  as someone who knows of some furries, they are often stigmatized.  I say live and let live.  I also wouldn't call it weird but "unique fandoms".  Fandoms implies they are fans, I know those that identify as two-spirit Aesegi, so appropriately I would say "unique intersectional idendities"
Just my thoughts only, no imposition

Here's a thread from the Chicago Reddit board about a Furry Con held in nearby Rosemont, IL: https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/7hy04a/chicago_now_hosts_the_largest_furry_con_in_the/

A Furry is someone that has an interest in anthropomorphic animals. I am a Furry but i am not active in the fandom, though i have some friends that are.
I believe that Furries are unfairly stereotyped and stigmatized. Furry does not automatically means sex or gay, but there is no denying that sex exist in the fandom, after all, sex is a big part of humanity, right?

The Furry fandom is a very inclusive fandom, it welcomes anyone of any age, race, gender and sexual orientation. Because of this a considerable portion of the fandom is LGBT, so i guess that is where the gay stereotype comes from.

I found the fandom over ten years ago and im glad i did. I have made good friends who share a common interest.
