Hi! I just joined this message board and have a question. I am finishing my sophomore year at college and will be spending this summer in Florida, some travelling and some working. Most of my time will be in the New Smyrna Beach/Daytona area. I just last year starting wearing g-string bikinis and really enjoy them. I'm thinking about buying a really tiny g-string that barely covers anything. How small of a bikini can you get away with at beaches like these?
Thanks - Susan

You can get away with almost nothing on, as long as you stay on the beach in Volusia County (Daytona and New Smyrna). You can't take a thong onto a public area off of the beach, unlss a motel pool deck specifically says its OK. To the north, Flagler County is intolerant, and to the south Brevard County is downright hostile to thongs. Be real careful there, they are only allowed at the nude beach at Playalinda Beach (farthest lot to the north).

Just came back from Daytona, and had the guts to finally wear a Dore string spider thong--very very small and dangerously low cut. Absolutely no problems--even right next to a lifeguard and beach patrol station!

Let us know how your summer is going!!

Thats great to hear eimeo. I'm a recent transplant to the Orlando area, and have been trying to find which beaches in the area are thong/nude friendly. I know about Playalinda and Apollo, hope to find some closer to Orlando.

I love thongs too

I see guys in thongs at the beach in Daytona too, doesnt bother me a bit, but my friend that was with me looked and me and she said "that guy's wearing a thong" to which and responded "Yes ..... and your point is ????" she said "Thongs are not made for men !" lol I see how the mentality is in the US, I think its both funny and sad !

I'm actually leaving here in about 15 minutes to go to the beach if you see a girl walking in a thong it'll most likely be me

well, Daytona is just one big beach, I usually park in the sunsplash park, its about 1/4 miles south of International Speedway and its free parking ! then I walk down the "ramp" to the beach and walk towards the pier, past the pier and all the way to where you can see cars on the beach again then I turn around and come back, its about a 4+ mile walk

Sure wish we would have seen you at DB--we were there 2 weeks ago. We stayed mostly in northern DB, didn't see a single thong. My wife still thinks I'm the only straight male that wears a thong, and so far I haven't been able to show her differently. We will have to try Sunsplash next time! Any other good DB thonging areas that you know of? We will be back at the end of August--hope to see you then! Thanks for posting! Good info!

Just got back from 3 weeks in Florida, and went to Daytona a couple of times and also Cocoa beech.

At Daytona only saw 1 lady in a thong who was in the water and quickly covered up when she got out.  Personally I didn't feel comfortable in a full thong, but I have the luxury of a a slide back black suit which can start as a full back, then a rio, then finally a thong (went to wet n wild in it and will post a report soon).  By doing it this way it takes the shock value from those close by and becomes sensible way of sunning whn the beech is a bit crowded.

When I got to cocoa, that was a different matter, acres of space, and saw one couple in thongs.  However, I settled in the area where there was a group of south America women sitting, all of which were in thongs, and happily walked, played and sunned themselves in thongs.

On both occassions never had any comments thrown at me, just smiles!!

hope this helps

I'm planning to be up and down the New Smyrna and Daytona area beaches next week. I spent much of my youth there, so I'm already familiar with the geography. Just wanted to check in on a few things: (1) I take it that it's still illegal to walk to off the beach in a thong in Daytona? What about New Smyrna, South Daytona, Ormand Beach, etc., does the same apply? I understand that's just a city ordinance. (2) Any particular locations a male in thong (just a plain old speedo style, no g-strings, missiles, backless stuff, etc.) should go or avoid. I know about the Canaveral seashore and I'll be there some, but I'll be looking elsewhere when I want to go surfing. I'm just looking for areas where I'll be left alone by the rednecks and guys out "cruising".

Re: New Smyrna Beach & Daytona area - Florida.

Date Posted:08/12/2006 05:42:01Copy HTML

I just got back from the Volusia county area. I stayed at a hotel at Ormand beach and spent most of my beach time at the north end of Ormand beach around Neptune drive. This was the only beach where I actually wore a thong. I just wore a simple Jantzen or Toto men's thong the times I was there. (Note: Toto men's thongs thongs have been improved considerably since I first tried one ~5-7 years ago.) During the whole trip, I only noticed one other person wearing a thong -- an extremely beautiful woman from Russia, who was probably in her mid 30's and seemed to have no inhibitions whatsover about being seen in her swimsuit. She should have been a WW model. She was bold enough even to ride her bike to the beach with none of that cover-up crap like most U.S. women insist on having over their dumpy one-piece suits when they walk to their cars. I spoke to her several times, sometimes while she ran up and down the beach many times behind me as I was laying down. She was very interested in spotting dolphins. I never got any flack from anyone in the Neptune drive area, including the lifequards and "turtle patrols" going by on 4 wheelers.

During the week I was there, I also did about 40 miles of beach running, all before 7 am, not wearing thongs, but brief-style triathlon gear like I wear in the races. I did several times get verbally harrassed by a group of construction workers on break near a condo they were building. During these morning runs, I also noticed lots of camera flashes coming from the condos, some far ahead of me and some nearby. I don't know what the intention of these people was, but I can't see how the flash would have helped them in way, whether they were trying to get picture of me several hundred feet away or the sun 93 million miles away.

I did drive on the main beach at Daytona one day, thinking it would be easier to keep an eye on the kids. The problems with the drive on beaches are that you actually end up having to watch small children even more closely than you would at other beaches because the vehicles driving are actually more of a hazard than the ocean. The other problem, which has gotten far worse in Volusia county over the last ~15 years is shrinking and frequent closing of drive-on areas. When I lived there in 1989 while working for my grandfather, I could drive on any accessible beach for free before 8 am or after 5 pm when the toll booths were closed. Volusia county long ago eliminated that option -- they block vehicle access to the beach now at all times when the toll booths are not in operation. The other, more recent problem is that they've broken up drivable areas into ever smaller lengths because they will find any excuse to temporarily close a section of beach if the sand gets a little rough, the tide gets a little higher than normal, etc. I ran into this problem this time when I rented a skim board at a concession stand, drove down the beach, and came back to return it several hours later. They had closed off the beach where I rented it. Even though I had obtained permission from the local lifeguard where the beach was blocked to drive around the barriers, I was still rudely scolded by the next one who was working nearby the concession stand. But he calmed down after I explained the situation.

In the old days (10 - 15 years ago), there were many miles of unbroken drivable beach in both Daytona and New Smyrna. I really think thongs were a bit more popular for both men and women back then also. Now, only a few shops carry real swimsuits for men. Every shop has the standard, knee-lentgh board shorts for men, maybe with prints a little different than last year. What I don't understand is why most of the guys buying these things are using them as swimsuits, not surfing gear. I keep a pair or 2 around for when I actually go surfing, but I can't imagine doing any lap swims or even playing around in the water in them.

As far as wearing thongs is concerned, the things I've learned from this trip and others are (1) further south is generally better in terms of both legality and cultural acceptance and (2) residential beaches with few bars, condos, and tourist shops nearby are always a good bet. There are miles of moderatly to sparsely-used beach in the Ormand-by-the-Sea area where I would have been equally comfortable. I think the real cultural (redneck) problem comes not from local people who live along the beach, but tourists, spring breakers, etc. who frequent the more popular bars and condos and such. Whether you're male or female, I think avoiding those areas will keep you far from most of the troublemakers.

Before I knew about this site, I asked someone about whether thongs were legal in Daytona beach and they sent me this article which was posted in 2003..... so I was wondering, are you all SURE its legal there?
Did they change the rules again since this article?

I have a feeling that every year I'm going to have to ask if thongs are legal at certain beaches because you never know, it may change without you knowing it. They may change the rules right before summer starts.
God, and barely anyone wears them at my local beach.. I could be the reason for them to ban it next year, you never know.

Here is the article

Morena123, I thong at the cape canerval seashore at the end of A1A just south of new smyrna beach.  We have been going thier the first of April for the last 6 year and have never had a problem. We usually tan and walk the beach between parking lots 3 and 5. And park at lot 4 when possable will be heading back south again the 3rd hopefully warm weather.

Everything still good, in terms of law, in these areas?  I know there will always be rednecks there, but hopefully no new laws.  I'll be going to Florida in a few months when my kids an I are out of school for the summer.  I go to grad. school and my kids are in elementary school.  Our spring breaks do not match up, so I can't go far with my family until late May.

You don't have go that far just to wear a thong.  As far as I understand, you can wear one on any parts of New Smyrna beach, although at busy times it might not be advisable when the beach is full of cars.  What you describe is the Nude area.  Those people pretty much don't want anyone but nudists (couples and families) using their beach.

Besides just exploring, the main reason one would choose those beaches over those of the main part of New Smyrna is just for the isolation.  Parking is a problem, to be sure.  Also, the beach there is much steeper and not nearly as easy to walk on as those of the main parts of town.  Only the northern few miles of beach allows driving.  If you want a place that's fairly convenient, but doesn't allow cars on the beach just go to one of those large, free parking areas on the more rural, southern end of New Smyrna along A1A.  There are several such parks.  I forget their names at this moment.  There are miles of beach that have condos, but don't allow driving on the beach.  Those areas are not bad.

I've probably worn a thong at parking lots 3 & 4 more than anywhere else.  When I can get a spot at #5, I just forget about the thong.  In fact, the nude sunbathers at lot 5 probably appreciate it when thongers go to the other lots leaving more of the very limited parking for them.  I've never had any problem parking at 1-4.  As I understand it, thongs are okay on any beach in Volusia County and personal experience says they're fine anywhere at the National Seashore in Volusia (Canaveral National Seashore, Apollo Beach.)

thonger99:  Are you referring to the Canaveral National Seashore?  There is a difference between this and New Smyrna Beach and it would be good for us all to be sure and make the proper distinction so no one accidently ends up in the wrong place.  My understanding is that thongs are ok in both places, but nudity is permitted (tolerated?) only at the southern end of the Canaveral National Seashore.  If there is anywhere in New Smyrna Beach that one can actually go nude without getting in trouble I would sure like to know about it.

Re: New Smyrna Beach & Daytona area - Florida.

Date Posted:05/18/2010 02:50:11Copy HTML

The post above is incorrect.  Thongs are permitted in Volusia County (New Smyrna) but nudity is not (except at Apollo beach at the National Seashore).  Thongs are not permitted (legally) in Brevard County.  However, I thonged all over (except Melbourne) and had no problems with police.  As for nudity, it is not technically legal at the Seashore either.  However, it is permitted at the NORTH end of the beach (lot 13).  As far as "permitted" reads, it's up to the current county political climate.  The Federal Government has no rules on nudity, and since the Seashore is federal land, there are no nudity rules.  However, Brevard County has anti-nudity ordinances, and every now and then they try to go up there and enforce them.  However, I have never heard of a case actually going to court and it seems they only target people doing the lewd stuff (sex, gay guys grabbing each other, etc).  The rangers are federal officers, and cannot enforce county laws - so they do not issue citations for nudity (although they can for lewd behavior).  Only if the county cops come out can someone be cited for simple nudity.

They tried to go out and enforce about 2 years ago.  Lots of people were getting pissed because the county has had an increase in crime, but the cops were spending hours out of the day driving 45 minutes out to the North end of the seashore to arrest a group of people for laying around wearing not much less than you can see at the Pier or Coconuts.  Made no sense financially, and since most police departments are tight on funds - there was some push back.

cyberluc:  I think our posts more or less agree.  When I said "southern end of the Canaveral National Seashore" I meant the southern end of the New Smyrna section (aka Apollo), not the Brevard section (aka Playa Linda).  Sorry for the confusion.

Wife and I were just there--went to Canaveral Seashore Lot #1 and I thonges a few hours before the rain chased us.  Lot 1 was busy and I was the only thonger, but no looks or comments.  Lot 1 is the only one that has a shower which is nice because the Canaveral sand seems to stick more than the Daytona sand.  BTW--rest of the week thonged everyday at Ormond Beach in front of the Makai.  This is our favorite motel, and they have put a lot of money into renovations and its great!  Never any comments there, but you will see some kids around. Did catch two teenage girls taking a picture of my butt with their phone--thought it was a compliment!

I went to Apollo beach today, parking area #3 wearing my black muscleskinz thong. There were not many people in this area. Setup just south of the boardwalk were 3 girls who were taking lots of notice of me, and a family of about 6 people. I strolled further down past them and laid out for awhile enjoying the beautiful day. I went in the water to cool off then took a walk down the beach to the north. As I passed the 3 girls they were all smiles as I thought to myself, get a good look. lol. I passed two more women in their 30's-40's and they just looked and smiled. There were some older couples there that I passed and nothing was said and no one seemed to be bothered by me. All in all I had a good relaxing time, and will be visiting a lot more now I know it is laid back.

Just got back from a short minication on Daytona Beach. Had a great time, and the weather wasn't too bad, just had to dodge a short shower now and then. Wore my fave skinzwear brazilian cut poser most of the time on beach and hotel pool..lots and lots of looks - had a smart ass comment I did not catch clearly at the pool from a woman (no lady, she) who did not remove the Marlboro before saying whatever stupid thing she said; I had to look twice to see if she was wearing a suit, tattooed from head to toe with some grotesque medieval whatevers....anyway, the sweet older lady in the chair next to me said it would be just fine for me to park myself and stay near her as she liked the scenery...lol...so, I did.
Decided to go for the classic black thong on Sunday morning on the beach, and got the usual reactions - lots of stares and walkers taking noticeable detours to come as close to my towel as they dare. Two young moms with toddlers planted right on top of me as did another family with toddlers on the other side. The young mom in the second group was wearing a very small, nicely fitted cut of suit that showed about half of her outstanding buttocks and she was tight all over - very pleasant. Her mother a 50-ish babe in a string bikini (and yes, she belonged in it) insisted on small talk and kept up the chatter, and my suit or lack thereof was never even mentioned, although it was obvious she had no objections. All in all it was a great time with some friendly, great people.
As others have said frequently, be friendly and don't act stressed or uptight, and other than the occasional dumb-*** have a great time!

youngthongcouple- if you look in my images folder, the shot with the black thong, that is my musleskinz. I think it is 3/8, thong back, regular sized pouch. you would not have any problem at all at new Smyrna beach, especially out on the Apollo beach at the very end of A1A. Very beautiful beach with miles and miles of privacy if you go on a weekday. I try to get out there at least once a week, welcome to the area I hope you enjoy it! Maybe I will see you thonging!

I've worn conversative thongs and tiny g-strings on Daytona and New Smyrna, and Apollo.  All are fine, but I'd probably stay away from sheer and 3D and 4D style swimsuits that throw your package "way out there."  (IMO, because this crosses the line between maximum exposure for tanning -vs- becoming a perv show off.

I went to Apollo Beach this summer and had to park at lot four. I then took my bicycle out of my car and left my clothes at the car and road to lot five wearing only my thong. I encountered a female ranger on the way but had no problems reaching there. After reaching lot five I went out to the beach and went nude. After sunning for a while, I put my thong on and rode my bike back to my car. A beautiful day for biking in a thong.

New here, but will soon be moving to Florida and looking at beaches where thongs are legal.  I have read several places that thongs are illegal on Daytona Beach (see below).  So, I was surprised at this topic. You cannot wear a thong on Daytona Beach. According to section 62-183 of the Municipal Code of Daytona Beach it is unlawful for anyone over 10 years old to knowingly, recklessly or intentionally appear in public with one-third or more of their buttocks exposed. Subsection (b) goes on to describe clothing that is insufficient to comply with the acceptable attire requirements as g-strings, t-backs, dental floss and thongs.

It's my understanding that the beaches belong to the county and not the city.  Therefore thongs are legal on the beach, but going to and from the beach it is best to cover up.

Re: New Smyrna Beach & Daytona area - Florida.

Date Posted:01/07/2014 02:43:03Copy HTML

Filledthong is absolutely correct--the beaches are under county jurisdiction. You can thong or string all you want in Volusia County (Ormond-Daytona Beach Shores, Port Orange) but then if you are visible from the street, like walking to your car, you can be cited.  The private motels can make their own rules, but you still can't be visible from city property.  Brevard County to the south has a host of redneck cops just waiting to bust you anywhere, and Flagler to the north is anti thong, too.  But Daytona is thong heaven, so enjoy!

Re: New Smyrna Beach & Daytona area - Florida.

Date Posted:01/07/2014 06:10:05Copy HTML

The law on beaches in Florida varies wildly.

First there is state law. No law against thongs.
Then there is state park rules, thongs banned in state parks. (Generally not inforced in the keys.)

Then there is county ordinances and county park rules. Varies by county, but covers all cities in the county.

Then there is city ordinances and city park rules, for beaches that are in city parks.

So either a county or city law banning thongs might affect the beach you are on.

The ownership of the beach can have some bearing on the situation. Most beaches in Florida are owned by the property directly inland. Many deeds have a property line running down to the high water mark. So you may be on private land, or you might be on pubic land, if the beach owned by the public.  Don't confuse public access with public ownership.

Biggest problem with March thonging is Spring Breakers.  You don't want to be out there with the college kids and their pack mentality.  That said, the sun is usually hot enough as long as the wind isn't too strong.  Done it many times, but always stayed in Ormond or South Daytona.

Finally get a day with just me and the wife and the weather should be decent.  Need to know the best beach in volusia to thong on a saturday.  Anywhere between ormond and new smyrna.  We would like somewhere not isolated but not crowded.  So, still access to beach bars, etc. and people, just not a lot of people. We aren't anti-social, we want to be amongst people, show off a bit, just not in the height of tourists and redneck nonsense. Other thongers would be preferred but not necessary. Our thongs will be small, almost g-string. Overdue for some sun and fun, would like to be able to tan and swim without being heckled if we don't cover up.  Please respond ASAP. Thanks for the help!

Re: New Smyrna Beach & Daytona area - Florida.

I have stayed numerous times at the Hilton Daytona Beach on the ocean. Never had any negative comments from staff or other guests wearing a thong at their pool overlooking the ocean. To be safe, I do avoid the family pool on the west side of the hotel. Now that Spring break is over, you should not have any problems from college kids on the beach in that area. No guarantees, but now should be a good time.  I will be there myself Monday, April 7 arriving about noon. From previous posts, it sounds like Ormond is very thong friendly.  Hope you have an enjoyable day!

On a secluded part of ormond in a camo ⅜" muscleskins torpedo and wife is in pink mini thong bikini by look swimwear. Would like to be around more people and know we would feel welcome, but it is our first time thronging in the states and we are a little nervous. Any recommendations?

snc704- interesting feedback about the Hilton. That's where I'll be. I've seen very few if any people in either pool the times I've been there (late April usually for a conference). Based on what you said, it would be great to thong there, but don't want colleagues to view me as "that thong guy" instead of a serious coworker.  Too bad - I'll have to go elsewhere. Be sure to let us know how your visit in a couple days goes, please.

ThongCouple, if you are thonging in new Smyrna, Ormond, or Daytona, today  I would be happy to join you, I don't neccesarily have to hang out with you, but I could set up near you if it would help you guys feel more comfortable if there were others thongers around.
