Many many moons ago on the daytime talk show hosted by Charles Perez (American version), he had an episode regarding people who wore controversial attire to the beach and their friends who were embarrassed by it.
Most of the focus was on a strung out older lady who admitted she needed to seek therapy. The host's focus, however (as well as mine) was a fit, non-overly muscular young tan guy in a thong. The audience was split with determining if it was or wasn't okay for him to thong at the beach. Charles asked him to do a twirl!

There was a Phil Donahue show and a couple of others that also took on thongs from various view points -- usually "should they be permitted" on beaches.  I have a friend who used to be a stripper/male dancer.  He said that several of his buddies who were also in this business appeared on these shows.  They were already comfortable in running around in just a thong, and got to keep the thongs they tried on for the show or actually wore on the show.  They were usually paid between $25 to $100 for a half hour of work, and sometimes got credit at the end as a model.  One of his friends actually was seen by one of the editors for Playgirl Magazine, and it launched him into a career as a nude male model.  These shows didn't shy away from the man's buns and showed them often, like in interview shots when the thonger would be facing the MC or Newsman.  Now, even showing a thong on an over-the-air TV station would be criticized most of the time, and might lead to fines from the FCC or potential loss of station licenses (although I don't think this has happened to any station yet.)

Cloydene, I totally remember that episode of Charles Perez. At that point in my life, I wanted to wear a thong to the beach so badly but was sure I never would. I was so inspired by the guy's honesty and comfort in his own skin. I remember some of the women saying they had no problem with what he was wearing because he was young and fit. The guy went on to say it wasn't about showing off his body, but about being comfortable, and that he'd be wearing the same thing to the beach even when he wasn't young and fit. It was great! I hope he lived up to his proclamations and is still wearing his cool thongs.
