My girlfriends parents have finally settled in Dubai and I accompanied her for a 2 week holiday (really enjoyed my first visit).
About 3 days ago we decided to go to a very popular beach destination for tourists called the jumeirah beach park. There is also an open beach called the jumeirah beach but her parents advised us not to go there because bystanders (who are fully clothed and have no interest in sunning or swimming) stare at tourists and even harass them. The beach park I mentioned first has an entrance free and is fenced and extremely well secured specially for tourists.

My girlfriends mom accompanied us and we arrived around 11:30AM on a typical hot sunny day. The entrance fee was just DHS5 (US$1.39) per person or DHS 20 per car. The entrance has a huge board with a set of rules and regulations and I was looking for any on dress code. NONE! I thought I might get to wear a thong bikini here, but unfortunately I didn't bring along a pair so yeah..regret.
Anyway, you can access the beach through 5 wood bridges, spread across the length of the park and we took the one nearest to us. I expected tourists but in conservative bikinis and the idea of seeing thongs was far fetched. Even men in bikinis I thought would be impossible but lo and behold when we entered the beach area there were at least 200 people and all I could see was skin! In fact the first person I saw was a woman in a skimpy greenish yellow shiny thong. Excellent I thought, and then I saw a lot of guys in speedo styled bikinis, most of them were old with huge bellies but some young men wore them too. There were so many people and I think there were more men in bikinis than men in board shorts!
My girlfriend got really happy too because she had brought along her thong bikiniand was really wishing to get a good tan. We changed real quick, and my girlfriend wore a solid baby pink thong bikini from Malibu swimwear. Her mother looked great in a leopard print rio bikini (shes 45) and I wore a tiny black INC bikini bottom. We rented tanning beds (DHS 15 each) and umbrellas (DHS 10 each) and had them placed by helpers close to the water were there were hundreds of people.
Like I said, at least 80% were in extremely skimpy bikinis, while a lot of them were in super mini thongs. We had a great time just laying around tanning and my girlfriend looked super hot (as usual), she really turned a lot of heads when we walked along the beach. I envied her in her thong and me in a bikini that was just "too much" compared to the people around us, so I folded them and made them look like a thong and continued to tan. Yes I made my bikini look like a thong, and a couple of people looked but they didn't care. I was a little cautious at first, because perhaps seeing a guy in a makeshift thong might upset some visitors, but my girlfriends mother assured me that as long as I was just laying down and tanning, I was fine and told me to just enjoy myself.

We even went to the cafe in our swimwear (converted it back to a bikini) and she didn't even put on her sarong.
I was really surprised, considering we were in a conservative country and people were walking around the garden close to the entrance of the park in their swimsuits.

My girlfriends mother had her little snorkeling kit and she proceeded to discover the beautiful clear waters and we followed. We went quite far out, but within the safe perimeter and I realized that I could enjoy my first thong experience right here in the sea. So I went back to our camp and grabbed my swim bag and headed for the changing room.
At this point you all must be thinking ; Hey you forgot to bring your thong bikini, yeah sure I did. But I did wear a lycra thong underwear underneath my shorts when I entered the park and I took them out of my swim bag and wore them under my conventional bikini bottom and headed straight out to sea where my girlfriend and her mother were amazed at how fast I had got back from the changing room.
So while in the water I just dropped my bikini to be only covered by a magenta thong with only a few mm of string covering my bottom! My girlfriend complimented me saying they looked great, "just like a thong bikini" she said, and her mother couldn't care less. So yes I swam and floated around in a thong, my first ever experience.
I put on my conventional bikini before I got out of the water.  I wish I could have been in a thong bikini the whole time.

I could just as easily have thonged in slovakia but I haven't been there since I was a teenager (I was content with bikinis back then), so this was my first thonging experience in the truest sense, although I didn't expose my self to anyone else because my intention was to get that sexy T-back tan line that my girlfriend had.

In the end I'll say that those of you who are planning a vacation to Dubai and are worried about wearing a thong, well, your girlfriends/wife's can be at ease and wear thong bikinis, but not the sheer wicked weasels as I didn't see anyone wearing them. For the men I'd say go ahead and wear your rio backs or any other skimpy bikinis you may have without any worries. I'll be happy to answer any questions!

Glad you had a good experience in Dubai.  I travel to that area a lot and find that, depending on where you go and maybe which hotel you stay at you can often get away with being discreet and wear a thong.  I have thonged several times at hotel beaches (they are private so have mostly business people and tourists who are used to seeing skimpy swimwear) and occasionally at hotel pools there.  I also employ the tactic of wearing a rio style bikini suit and then pulling this up into a thong back for tanning, usually with no comments from anyone.

I suggest that you try wearing your thong for tanning next time.  You probably need to be more conservative on the public access beaches as these would be more frequented by locals who may take a dislike to seeing so much flesh.

Hi tremendimouse

I'm going to be staying in dubai for another few months and I really want to wear a proper thong bathing suit while I'm here.  Seeing women in thong bikinis is encouraging but I would really drop my regular bikini bottoms in favor of a thong if I saw another guy in one.

Come on dude, take the plunge, what's the worst that can happen, you'll have a great day at the beach and will feel alive from the so-called "risk-taking". Who are these people that frown on us anyway, and do we care for their opinion? I think not. Go for it my friend, safe in the knowledge that there are lots of guys like you out there doing the same thing. Frankly, life is too short to sweat the small stuff!!

Sorry to disappoint you guys, I'm a great advocate of thonging for women and men alike and i use it myself, but definitely not in dubai.

perhaps you don't know that because you don't live here or you're misinformed, but thongs although perfectly fine for women are a big no no for men and they could get you in a lot of trouble since they are thought to be worn only by gay men, homosexuality is punishable by law in the UAE and please don't really believe it's a liberal country.

the government is not willing to impose a dress code but i'm sure they will have to ban any kind of thong wearing on the beach if they find more men were using it, because they can not possibly have a dress code that states that men were not allowed to wear thongs which implies they were encouraging women to wear them on the beach. they can not afford to infuriate their ultra conservative, head to toe covered, big bearded people and bring about unwanted protest and trouble.

Orienthippie is correct especially as the Dubai government are getting even more strict following conditions from Saudi and Abu Dhabi in curving the westernisation of Dubai.

I'm being serious now, in the secure hotel clubs you may just get away with it, and yes women are occasionally seen on some of the public beaches in a thong, but men if you wear a thong on a public beach and you offend one of the local women, the police can arrest you and press charges.  Its not a country where public power or pressure works.

Respect the country and there values and they will respect you.

Please do not play any mental games in public in an ultra conservative Muslim country.  That is insanity.  The same as playing Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun!  You will lose, the question is if it will the the first, the next, or will it be your final time?  It is just not a game that you dare to play.  You have read the news about a British couple caught kissing and sent to jail for two months???  Maybe you think that you are getting away with something. Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!    It is no different than a visit to northern China where 'Big Brother' knows your every move.  Or Singapore where spitting on the street , 'jaywalking', or throwing your used cigarette butt on the street will result in a $5000 fine. That is correct a possible $5000 fine.  Those locals in those countries have nothing better than harass their citizens and love to target foreigners as 'instigators for corruption of local value systems.'  Please don't try to outsmart the local government and officials.  Respect the locals and you will not have to pay the price of very foolish and expensive legal consequences.  Too many horror stories to not believe that is more truth in all of the unhappiness resulting in visits to those places.

We live in Dubai, and as thongers, and nudists, have to find a public beach or private club where it is comfortable to wear one. We have seen russian women at Jumeriah beach club wearing v-back thongs, but that was on occasion and not typical.

Hi, will be going to Dubai for a meeting around December Christmas/new years time. I am a male and wear gstrings mainly at the pool/beach.  I occasionally wear thongs or rio back cheekier suits, but try not to mess up my tanlines.  Any updates in recent yrs on Dubai and hotels i could stay at? I have stayed at Atlantis in the Bahamas and liked it so was thinking about Atlantis in Dubai but after seeing one of the post about thongs not being allowed in Atlantis I was wondering if anybody had any recent updates on Dubai and hotels that I could stay at and possibly wear my thong/gstring suits at the pool or hotel Beach?

I don't know any thong-friendly hotels, but I know that there are many beach clubs in Dubai.
I actually saw a lady in a thong at the Atlantis Waterpark when I went there six years ago. Anyway, my advice is that you shouldn't sport a thong on a public beach in Dubai. It's a Muslim country after all, and you can get in trouble with the law if you wear a thong on a public beach. Go to a tourist designated beach or a beach where there are many Europeans.

Dubai is a fairly liberal city - right up to the time you get arrested. I have worn a very skimpy asian bikini on one of the Palm Jumeirah beaches without issues and my OH was wearing a string bikini. It was outside some apartments so not as touristy as other parts of the palm. It wasn't busy and those that were there seemed to be ex-pat families and their visitors. So it was fairly international and the vibe was OK. Hotel Atlantis seems to have a mixed clientele including perhaps some burkini wearers - best to be discrete. The people we were staying with identified what would happen if there was any kind of a problem including say a scrape in a car park. If it involved an Emarati then as a westerner, you were likely 'to be in the wrong'. Much more so if you were male and the other person was female. The police feel they have to do something if the lady feels offended in any way. Long answer short, if you notice any female who may be Emarati then keep well clear, don't look and don't stare. If everyone is in bikinis and regular swimwear, then you may be ok.

Well, I read everyone's posts and booked Le Meridien Beach Resort and Spa on Jumierah Beach in Dubai. After reading all the posts this seemed to be the best option with some possibility of wearing my G-string on the beach in a secluded area and rio-backed bikini at the pool possibly. If anyone has any comments or other options, please post. I have until December to cancel. Thanks all!
