Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:07/09/2020 04:15:37Copy HTML Fsanford, thanks for the update. In years past (I've been going since the 80's), the dunes may have been closed for.... up to a mile (?)... but then open again afterward. Yup, it's a long treck, but it was always worth it to me. Is this for the Plovers? If so, normally the dunes re-open by mid-July (as I recall). Just a thought. :)

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:07/27/2020 12:29:19Copy HTML Went on Saturday the 25th. Its a very different crowd on weekends! Lots of thonged women. I walked north for a while and stripped to my thong. I was with my wife at the textile beach. She is not down...i had a nice walk. Ran into a gal we met the week before. She was cool with my attire. It was a great day although storms threatened, they never made it East.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:08/12/2020 06:25:12Copy HTML We've rented a cabin at castaways. It can be a little more expensive but it is worth it to us. The drive back to west ocean city isn't terrible either. Youre probably not going to find a cheap place this time of year. We even stayed at an airb&b in Georgetown, Delaware. That was an hour drive.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:08/12/2020 08:49:04Copy HTML dmvguy, string_guy and VAthongn,
Last year, and later this month I had luck booking great AirBnB rooms closer to Salisbury, MD. ( I try to stay at least 10 miles away from OC, LOL.) This year, a room for under $30/night (of course, I booked in Feb.).
You might also want to look at places in Parsonburg or Pittsville or other small towns west of Berlin.
Two options for driving from Salisbury to ASP via Berlin. Route 50 (boring and crowded), or MD 350/374... open roads winding through gorgeous forests and fields. Either route, it's about 40-45 mins. one way.
in the 00's, I had found an incredible entire Victorian farmhouse for $20/night in VA just south of the MD/VA border, which I rented many, many times (sadly, now sold). Always either nude or in thong when grilling dinner. It was about 50 mins to ASP.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:08/13/2020 02:16:40Copy HTML Got to spend a few hours this morning til just after noon. Probably all around the nicest time I’ve had at Assateague. Gentle breeze out of the south-ish w/no bugs, water was perfect temp (refreshing without being too chilly), calm and beautiful green in color. Air temp was great too, I barely even sweated the whole time I was there. I saw at least 6 other thongers, which I thought was pretty good for a Wednesday. Clouds were beautiful and the dune closures for the nesting birds are all gone. I’m gonna call it a perfect time! I can’t wait to do it again.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:08/16/2020 04:42:56Copy HTML @Lance, We did try to book a place for the for of the 22nd. Hard to find anything reasonable. AirBnB is fair until they tack on all the fees. We booked at Castaways for 3 nights. Over $1000!!! Better hve good weather!
@Fsanford, I love those days. They are more common later in the season although the days are shorter.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:08/16/2020 11:02:00Copy HTML @Lance, I didn't know you could book that far on advance. We were looking at a place on the water in Ocean pines. The fees doubled the price. At this point its easier to stay at Castaways. We don't go into town if we don't have to. We'll go to the beach at Assateague a few days. Looking forward to some time away.

National Seashore side, does that mean that it's okay on the Maryland State Park side? LOL.
Why is it that the guys that are going for the nudity at the NPS always carry so much stuff, If you're
nude you shouldn't need much?

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/03/2020 03:47:16Copy HTML A TALE OF TWO BEACHES
LAST SUNDAY: it was the day after Hurricane Laura had passed over. I walked north from parking up to our beach with no problems in mid-afternoon. But as soon as I started setting up, I was attacked by 10,001 black flies. It was like a Hitchcock movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hplpQt424Ls
I spent 2 hours there, all but 10 minutes in the water. These flies draw blood, and once they see a drop they swarm on it. I was swatting them off my ankles all the way back to parking, my new white shorts now spattered with blood. Several even got inside my car. The horror... the horror.... (West wind? Never again!)
THE NEXT DAY: East wind, blue skies, white puffy clouds, I was all alone on our beach... perhaps two couples strolled past over 5 hours. Paradise found!
THE END

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/03/2020 03:51:15Copy HTML Tuesday and Wednesday. Absolutely perfect again. Paradise. One friendly thonger yesterday; good chat. Again, perhaps 2 or 3 strollers; no beach patrol. It's a bit strange...the week leading up to Labor Day...both the main beach and our beach should be very busy, but both are very empty. Parking perhaps 40% full. A great time to visit.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/03/2020 03:56:56Copy HTML Labor Day Weekend Tip.
In the past, Friday - Monday over Labor Day the parking lot fills up early... certainly by 11 AM. So try to get there as early as possible, perhaps 9 or 10 AM. If you get locked out, you might visit historic Berlin or go to the Assateague Crab House (always a treat), then return at 3 or 4 PM, often parking is open again. Of course, this year, the number of visitors seems very down, so it may not fill up until later. I hope to see plenty of thongers...we start setting up north of the small circle of white environmental protection signs (a turtle nest?).

Date Posted:09/05/2020 08:14:21Copy HTML wife and I were there from 9:30am until 1:30pm, the ocean was too rough for us and wind was terrible so we laid out in the dunes to avoid being being sandblasted, got some sun and called it a day...can't always be perfect I guess.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/06/2020 11:30:24Copy HTML I arrived yesterday at 10AM, and yes, the wind was from due North at 14 kts. But the island is divided into 2 parts; the flat beach on the east and dunes on the west. So many of us simply set up on the south side of a dune, and it was fantastic, as not only were we protected from winds, but the dunes served as a sort of "sun bed" with a perfect angle for maximum tanning. By 3 PM the wind had reduced substantially and I moved closer to the water on the flat beach. Yes, the water was choppy by Assateague standards, but having been born and raised not from from Malibu, CA I'd call the waves mild.
Friday morning we had the flies; yesterday the wind. On both days everything changed at 3 PM. That's often the pattern on Thong Beach.
As to wind, I always check windfinder.com. If it's a west wind, I don't bother; the flies are killers, literally drawing blood, resulting in massive swarming of the wound.
All in all, I'd give yesterday an 8.0 though.
Forecast for today and the next 4 days looks awesome! l

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/07/2020 12:32:43Copy HTML Assateague was perfect on Sunday. The wind calmed down and the sky was cloudless. Lots of walkers and several people in thongs or less including some single ladies. There was apparently some sort of emergency north of me as 2 lifeguards passed in jeeps with flashers on. Probably not too bad since they returned in about 20 minutes without the need of any medical vehicles. This week after Tues. is not looking too good for the beach with the chance of showers every day.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/08/2020 01:48:38Copy HTML Monday, Labor Day, was 100% wonderful on Thong Beach. About 10 visitors were there....several regulars.... I was in my Gregg Homme thong.... a bit overdressed as compared to the others. :o
Light East breeze, warm sun.... soft clouds came about 4 PM when we all needed a little relief. Some fun and useful chats. Perfect waves.... like a hydro massage.
Tomorrow looks about the same. Count me in!

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/09/2020 01:10:05Copy HTML A layer of clouds and mild wind, but generally a wonderful day at Thong Beach. Perhaps 8 visitors set up. Oddly, almost every left around 2 PM, just as the sun was coming out and the wind died down. Ocean was wonderful for swimming. Beach patrol made one round-trip pass, but just rolled along, not really checking anything; I may have been the only one actually in a thong. :) The crowd at the main beach was way down; the official summer season seems over.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/13/2020 04:17:27Copy HTML 5 rain days turned into 3. Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/16/2020 01:24:35Copy HTML A good day... I give it 8 out of 10. Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/17/2020 06:04:00Copy HTML On a scale of 1 - 10, yesterday was a 20. Perfect blue sky, gentle ocean, mid-70's, gentle easterly breeze...and the beach was packed (though, as always, we tend to keep 100' distance between ourselves). Perhaps 30 thongers, plus assorted beach strollers. I chatted with several, almost all locals. They are simply selective. The conditions have to be at least at the 9 or 10 level for them to come. Visitors from further out go to Thong Beach if it''s 4 or above.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/17/2020 12:38:46Copy HTML We get the same phenomenon in South Florida. We have so many good days that locals don't go if it is iffy. That could be too cold, too hot, too humid, might rain, or simply a holiday weekend when the beach is overrun by rednecks and tourists.
The best time to see the smaller thongs on cuter local women tends to be mornings early in the week when the dancers and bar staff who work nights and weekends have a day or two off.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:09/24/2020 04:50:50Copy HTML Tried to go yesterday (9/23) afternoon but the tide was so high the water was all the way across the beach and up to the dunes. Even past the “nudity prohibited” signs where things normally open up there was no place to lay a towel but on the dunes. And if you did that it was only a matter of seconds before you were set upon by the flies. I just want to freshen up the tanlines one more time, time is not on my side.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:03/04/2021 03:03:55Copy HTML Yes, the National Seashore is a National Park, like Yosemite. Your National Parks Pass works there for entry. As such, I believe it is $80 for a permanent pass, or $40 for the annual pass. There is also a Maryland State Park next to it, and a daily pass can gain you entrance there. They also have far superior showers and store than the National Seashore.

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:03/06/2021 04:07:17Copy HTML Thanks. The annual passes (NPS or MSP) include parking fees? Do the two parks utilize the same parking lot? And what keeps one walking down the beach to the other park?

Re:Assateague Island National Seashore (Just south of Ocean City, MD.) Date Posted:03/06/2021 05:59:25Copy HTML Both entrance fees are inclusive of parking, but they use different entrances about a mile apart and their parking is in completely different lots. There is absolutely nothing restricting your walking along the beach from one area to another, in fact people frequently do that. Many people park in the MSP lot and walk north towards Ocean City an onto NPS land, that is less restrictive in attire and enforcement
