        We looked at the bulletin boards at the bathhouse and on the right just before you cross the dune where the lifeguards post the water temperature and surf conditions, neither of these postings said anything about swimwear, guess that allows the rangers to make up the rules as they see fit.

It is good to hear that there are at least no postings of swimwear restrictions.  It would seem that the imposition of a fine would be difficult to sustain legally if there were no such postings.

Well personally, I like ctmonline's approach to situation.....I love Assateague too much to just abandon it.  As much as we all love thongs....we can just play it cool this summer and wear a skimpy bikini....they can't fine us for wearing what all the women wear and in the process we can continue to make bikinis on men an acceptable swimwear attire for the rest of the public.  Let the foolish rangers wear themselves out chasing thongs all summer....how sustainable can that be?  And by the way.....we have a new governor in Annapolis who might be a whole lot more receptive to allowing Assateague to have a clothes optional area, especially since there is a majority....albeit a slim majority, but a majority nonetheless that approves of the idea.  Meanwhile, I will wear my Skinz Super Low Rio this summer and have alot fun.  Just like ctmonline's Dore 3 inch back suit, there is a lot of really fun mens bikinis out there to choose from that should confound the authorities.  Women can have fun with the "other" cleavage with their choice of suits!  We can still keep our north end guys.....we will just have to play the game for a while and they will eventually wear themselves out.....Also, we need to be vigilant to the real criminals that are the real reason for all this silliness...the stalkers and perverts that expose themselves to shock regular people for thrills...they are why we have been unfairly categorized.  I will have no problem reporting any behavior like that if I see it taking place.

I think some one needs to have a face to face sit down with the head ranger and find out what they are really trying to enforce.  They are probably trying to curb the full nudity, illicit sex, flashing and nefarious goings on, not the regular beach goer in a small swim suit or thong.

It's the hiding from rangers, ducking into the dunes, and lurking behind wind breaks that just looks wrong and suggests inappropriate activity. It would probably be a good thing to stick to regular thongs, avoid g-strings and abandon bagges. (Baggies and the like were probably never very legal to start with.)

Maybe it would be smart to sun in the open, possibly around other beach users, just like you are normal people and not doing anything wrong.  But first, figure out what is going on.  Some one needs to make a trip to the head rangers office and sitting down accross the desk and asking.  (In cases like this email just does not do it because goverment workers are verycarefull about what they put in writing.)

I have been to Assateague twice now this season.....both times has been fantastic....I have been cautious about wearing a thong...instead just wearing my Skinz Super Low Rio.  Both times I went to the State Park area with the concessions stand and both times I walked straight from the parking lot to the beach wearing only my suit.  I was in full view of the rangers on many occassions and they didn't even give me a second look.  I walked up the north end.....they have the north end blocked off alot closer than in years past....the signs reading that it is in the interest of species preservation....many guys wearing speedos and saw two guys in strings surf fishing.  At the concessions area, I saw one very hot attractive girl walking around in what was for practical purposes a thong....was a very small and very low riding brazilian suit....very hot looking and she was enjoying the looks....On my second visit, I just mingled with the crowd close to the lifeguard stations....it was a weekday....and was not hugely crowded.  I had alot of fun....I minded my own business and layed out...went for swims....everybody was totally cool....and I had the biggest surprise when a 20 something girl walked up to me and said...."Excuse me sir......I don't normally do this....but...I just wanted to say that I think it takes a real man to wear a suit like that...looks great!".....she smiled and then went back to her friends.....I was floored.....to me Assateague is still the wonderful tolerant place that it always has been.  For the time being....I will just enjoy wearing my "legal" suit since the tanlines are already there.....but the thing is....I would very much like to see any brief swimwear become totally normal for men to wear to the beach.....change sometimes has to happen in increments.....

...it sounds like you had a great time!!! I think it's just one ranger that's causing all the confusion at Assateague, probably the one I spoke to last year, he was straight-laced and by the book...not very open-minded...that's was just my observation from the short time we spoke.

Went to the national park last weekend. Had a great time. I saw a couple of guys in speedo type suit and on other guy in a thong. There was one lady in a small gstring. Overall it was a nice experence.

                              ...were you north of the state park closest to OC or were you at the natioanl park south beach near the 4x4 area?

                              ...did any of the rangers patrol the area while you were there and if so did they approve of the thongers?

I was in the national park. First lot  walk a little towards the state park. I did see any rangers. The entire day.  The beach was fairly crowded that day.

My wife and I drove through Assateague on Saturday, they're expanding the main National Seashore parking lot north past the toll booth, it's way to cold for the beach right now but I figured it was worth mentioning.

We spent a little over two hours at the north beach portion of Assateague today. The water was still too cool for us (65 degrees).
My wife wore a brazilian-back style bikini and I wore a Dore 2" backpush-up front bikini, probably pushing the limits of acceptance with the anti-thong rangers.  The ranger trucks must've drove by us six times in two hours (WTF...slow day?). 
The six or seven single men near us would go from wearing speedos one minute to nude the next minute, then they would bring out their binoculars and stare at each other as they paraded around. We couldn't stop laughing the entire time...it was pathetic!!!

I agree. The going nude where it's not allowed just gets the rangers heckles up, sets up a war of cat and mouse spying, often ended by new draconian rules.

A few silly people can end up creating an atmosphere that is viewed by others as illicit. Behavior like this scares off regular beach goers, scares off straight male thongers who don’t want to be cruised, and just gets the sun lovers a bad name.

If they would just calm down instead of alternating between nude and speedos, they could lay out without worrying about hiding from the rangers.

Unfortunately this gay testosterone fulled activity, often associated with other acts that should not be public, gets all the minimal swimware users a bad rap. I think we can do a few things to help:

If thongs are legal then tell any of them that.  Do you think they can be encouraged to wear a thong and lay out with the normal people, instead of hiding way up the beach as pervs in the boondocks and ducking the rangers.  

It takes a bit more courage to layout with the normal folk, the mothers and children, but it means that the thongers are seen as regular folk and not part of the perv community that's hiding down the end of the beach and playing cat and mouse with the rangers.

 Maybe someone will take on the task of being the good will ambassador on the beach, sort out the thong rules with the rangers and then spread the word.

The success of the nude beach at Haulover in Miami is not based on it's isolation, for it has none, but in large part on the work of a few dedicated soles who appointed themselves 'Beach Ambassadors'. They took it upon themselves to educate beach users as to what was and was not appropriate behavior. They were quick to tell people to cut it out when people stepped over the line. In time they developed good working relationships with the life guards and park rangers and all worked together to keep the beach PG rated, at least as much as a clothing optional beach can be.

We are all empowered to tell others when their selfish, and in this case illegal, actions are creating a situation which impacts us. We can, and should, approach it in a positive way by educating people. Tell them that they don't need to keep covering up with speedos and that thongs are OK, so long as they are not transparent and they don't engage in sexual activity.

The rangers are probably fed-up of driving up and down all the time trying to keep theses guys pants on.  What they are realy trying to curb is the development of more ilicit public sex.  I can see there point of vew.  With this current crop of beach goers, if they take their eyes off them they start acting out in illegal ways.

       I've checked and thongs are legal in Maryland, we wear them in Ocean City which is just up the road all the time, the rangers have taken it upon themselves to make up rules (no thongs) at Assateague to scare off the pathetic crowd that we have right now. I really don't blame the rangers after some of the sights we've seen over the years, it was just a matter of time, the only change they've seemed to make is that now everyone wears bikinis (speedos) instead of thongs...getting naked as soon as the ranger passes even though he still is within sight...it's really a shame what this nice beach has turned into over the years.

A Fantastic Day at Assateague!!....The wife totally surprised me....she decided to wear one of her Wicked Weasels!  She has never worn a thong....much less a g-string to the beach.  I was so happy.  We purposefully walked only as far north as we could to find a spot to ourselves but not as far as the nude area.  Many adult couples could see us....but she covered up if children were in eyesight.  A ranger passed by once without seeming to take notice.  All in all it was a perfect day at the beach spent just to ourselves with no hassles....maybe things are changing for the better.

Take it easy and make sure she is comfortable. 
Make sure her first few public thoing sessions are relaxed, comfortable and no big thing.

Some tips, so she does not regret it:

Don't get to overworked over it.
If you are too enthused she may get spooked, so play it cool.

Don't mention it to her friends or any other person that she thonged. 
If she wants others to know she will tell them in her own good time.

Unless she gave you permission, don't, on any account let her know you posted her picture on the internet. 
She may never forgive you.  Women often get very spooked if they know otherpeople can view their pictures. 

So be careful, play it cool, compliment her on how good she looks, and thank the stars above.

The weather was awesome both days and the thongs were out as well.  I was surprised by the mix; about 1/3 bikini, 1/3 thong and 1/3 nude while sitting on the beach.  Everyone said the rangers are being cool this year, as long as you don't stroll the beach nude.  They seemed to make only two round trips a day, so that's not so bad.   And almost no gawkers, so that's cool too.   Can't wait for next weekend.

JM, I totally agree with you on all points....I have never pushed her to wear her weasels in public....she usually wears them as lingerie around the house.  I think she is alot more comfortable with herself now....and the sight of other normal people wearing thongs or sunning topless at Assateague has made her more relaxed and comfortable. So thanks are probably in order to all of you posters here that have served to make Assateague a wonderful beach.  Also, she gave me permission to share the small pic for this msg board for two or three days and then I will remove it.  Just wanted to show that thongs on Assateague are still possible.

Mdskimpyman, it was good to read your report on Assateague.  Wife and I are planning a DelMarVa trip soon en route to Williamsburg, and a stop there would be ideal.  She doesn't thong, but is fine with me doing so in good environs, which your experience shows Assateague is.

Glad to hear your wife was okay with the picture posting.  I'll have to remember to check it out tonight (such things are blocked here at work).  Does it include yourself, I hope?  Folks seated nearby us in St. Maarten once obliged and took a good posed shot of my wife and me, she fully dressed (as always!) and me in my favorite blue/orange harlequin thong. 

I did something similar on Flickr last week for the first time, posting a photo of myself in my favorite g-string, just for this board's use.  No tags or anything else that might invite abuse, and only 8 hits so far.  I may take it down soon, but it feels good to go public with the folks on this board, since we share common interests and there's nothing purient about it.

I arrived today (Tuesday) around 1:30 p.m. and there were about 5 thongers there, but all packing up to leave.  Seems like the horse and sand flies were biting.  But it was just around then that the winds shifted from west to east and the next four hours were nice and there were about 7 thongers/nudists there.   Then the winds shifted again and the flies were everywhere and it cleared out the beach in a flash.   Well, at least we got four good hours (though I do have several horse fly bite welts on my legs and butt).  Anyone have any ideas of any lotions to repel those pests in the future?

The last few posts sure sound promising, thongs are legal in Maryland, maybe the rangers are finally starting to realize their made-up laws are unenforceable. We'll have to check it out this week or next.

Reguarding the horse flies:....I always check weather.com for reports and forcasts for Ocean City, Md....there is an airport there with an automatic reporting station so wind reports are acurate.  Any wind from Northeast to East to Southeast and South will mean a sea breeze and no horse fly problem...anything with West in it and I don't even bother going.  Be sure and check what is actually being reported against the forecast....sometimes they are totally opposite from each other....the actual real time report is what I consider most important. Example:  last Sunday the forecast was for SW winds at 5 to 10 mph....but SE at 10 was actually being reported at 10 am....so my wife and I decided to go and it was perfect...winds were from the sea all day at 10-15 mph.

I have tried EVERTHING as far as lotion or spray for the flies....and nothing works for more than a few minutes.  Deet sprays will work for a few minutes but thats all....you will use up an entire bottle in an afternoon trying to keep yourself doused in the stuff.  Some people bring large tents that have screens that you can hang out in peacefully....of course you aren't getting any sun like that but you can at least enjoy the beach and ocean a little.

It was a perfect day and a lot of thongers were out there.  But can someone explain to me about the guys with the binoculars?   What's that all about?  What are they looking at or for?  They're either nude or in thongs themselves.  Everyone is letting everything hang out there anyway.  Why do they need to make the "extra effort"?  Very strange.

I've been here for 3 weeks now.  Bikinis and thongs are no problem at all.   Nude is OK as long as you're on your blanket and not strolling around.  That seems to be the rule.

...that sure sounds like a big change on the rangers part, they fined a lot of people last year for thongs, that's why we quit going there. We'll be there on Sunday, not sure if we'll wear our thongs, the last thing we need are fines for indecent exposure....even though thongs are legal in Maryland.

ctm... not that I take chances.  I slip on a bikini if I notice the rangers coming, but there have been times that I haven't and have had no problems.  I've simply not seen anyone fined or even cautioned and no one has complained about it.

Was just perusing this thread and was pleased to see that thonging seems to be back (legal) on Assateague in Maryland. More than one commentor said that thongs are legal in Maryland. Can anybody provide a legal cite for that? I've never been able to find one.

I was there at least 30 times last summer.  The rangers were cool with thongs and g-strings.   I never saw anyone bothered by them, even the nudists.

Thongs are legal but quite rare in Ocean City.  Assateague, on the other hand, is a terrific place to thong.  (There was a period of backlash by the authorities at Assateague in 2007 but it seems to have lifted completely in 2008.)  Go to the U.S. beaches category and look up Assateague; you will find a very extensive and informative set of entries.  The most commonly used section of Assateague is about one mile north of the Assateague State Park beachhouse.

Please cutback on starting new threads. Post replies to to existing threads on the subject.
If you want to cut and paste from your word processor do not do it directly.
First paste it into notepad or other basic ascii editor so that the formatting codes are removed, then cut again. This will give you clean posts.
