Today the weather was pretty good till mid afternoon. Thunder and clouds made us go home early. As I was getting ready to get on the new mobi-Mat leading to the 40th crossover ramp a gaggle of college age girls wearing thongs and/ or very cheeky suits were also preparing to depart. Gentleman that I am, I let them go first!  Females definitely get a pass wearing thongs on Sunset Beach.

I’m out on Bird Island today and the weather is nice and crisp a little cooler at all seems to be good after the hurricane. Not much debris on the beach other than some grass and a couple pieces of driftwood. The dunes did take a little bit of hit with the storm surge. Looks like it took away the turtle nests though. Overall all of the houses MartyLouie on the island looks like they survived very well. Out in my JovanaDesign multicolored G for the day.

Marty, what about the open spot between the dunes where you can walk back into the marsh area? Just last the mailbox? Are those dunes gone or cut into?

It’s bigger wider flatter and more open. My spot is washed vertical with a 2ft step at least. Also the sand ramp is washed away at 40 and the 4 or 5 steps are exposed. On the bright side , I saw a couple of ladies in true thongs on my ride back near 40th. I’m pretty sure a guy could get away with a conservative thong in the area marked Bird Island Reserve, just west of 40th. Just don’t put a cabana out of line.

I'm delighted to hear BI didn't suffer too badly. Not so much for Ocean Isle Beach, where we have a rental property. Unfortunately, I'll now be cleaning up on OIB and won't be able to visit BI this week. So glad you dodged the bullet, Marty!

NCBeach....do you know of any of the beaches north of Sunset, that one can carefully be naked? Maybe the same set up as Bird Island? Or are Ocran Isle, and those other 2, just too populated?

Chs south of the outer banks, the only places that I’ve heard of where people sometimes go nude is Masonboro Island, outside of Wilmington. Unfortunately you need a boat or kayak to get there. Bald Head Island does see some nude use, but is mostly private.

CHSnudist: Marty beat me to it. I have not been to Masonboro, I but have naturists friends who have been there nude. I've sunbathed nude on Ocracoke Island, well away from the town.

On Okracoke (or as The Weather Channel calls it Corncrake Island) is definitely thong friendly and the area with the most nude use used to be Mile Post 67

Wonderful day at BI today. Perfect breeze, not a single problem with flies or gnats. Normal foot traffic. A couple showed up after a while and went closer to the jetti, then eventually moved to the top of the dunes. Also met CKWonderer. We talked for a bit, or I talked his ear off. Didn't see any other skimpy or non existent suits. No other things other that CK. SB Beach took a bit of a beating with last weeks storm. dunes took a hit, quite a few spots where the surf cut into the dunes and washed then back into the marsh area.

Been on Sunset Beach last couple days. Wife and I both in thongs. Family vacation, got our kids too. First day we were fairly close to 40th. No worries, good time. Today we made it to the mailbox. Saw some other thongers. One couple where the girl was thonging and another guy thonging. Had a chat with a couple going nude in the dunes too. All good! Everyone very nice. We walked in thongs to the jetty, met a family and had some conversation. Local folks, certainly no comments one way or the other. My wife noticed a woman getting me on video yesterday, but she didn't seem to mind. I think I saw some people sneak some pics too, but everyone has been totally fine. We have not been subtle or anything either. I've been the only guy in anything other than board shorts, except one guy in square cut. A few women in cheeky and one or two in genuine thongs, but honestly no one seemed to care. Awesome beach!

Really nice today at BI. Slightest of breeze out of the south, clouds burned off and now there’s abundant sunshine. Tide is low and the ocean is nearly flat. Current thonger count=1 (me).

Came out yesterday, but the flies ran me off after 15 minutes. My mistake not looking at wind direction out of the north. Today is night and day different. South wind, rising tide, beautiful.

On my way out I ran into a couple that usually suns on Sunday mornings heading back. They were driven off by the flies. There was very little wind, so the flies drifted in from the marsh. After about an hour or so the winds from off the ocean picked up, driving the flies away, making for a great beach day. The highlight of the day was the young lady in a gold lame g minimal string bikini, with matching top. As I passed by on a walk she said hi, and I replied cute suit. She said she liked my HIS bikini also. I said now all you need to do is get him into one. The boyfriend was wearing extra long board shorts. You could tell it was her first or nearly so time wearing something that small by her tan lines from a conservative bottom.

Spent late afternoon through sunset/moonrise today near the jetty at Bird Island. Nice breeze, sunny with intermittent clouds. Broke in my new Shibumi Beach Shade https://shibumishade.com/. Had the beach to myself except for occasional walkers. Chatted with Martylouie as he was leaving just before sunset.

Does anyone know how far down the beach at Huntington Beach state park you should go to comfortably lay out in a thong? Without a lot of hassle?
CKWonderer #468

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Date Posted:09/06/2020 12:45:10Copy HTML

Going to Huntington State Park. I have been 3 times and each time I go to the far northeast parking lot walk out to the beach and then NE until you get to an open spot and thong on from there. I take walks up to the jetty from there. I have seen women in thongs there twice. Park rangers just drive on by... don’t plan on going nude at all there. It is a good alternative to Bird Island but just not the same vibe to me.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

The flies were as bad as I’d seen them, and drove me off the beach. For a holiday Saturday it was incredibly empty. Very few walkers or boat people. Not that there weren’t a lot of boats on the inlet, very few ventured onto the ocean side. I wonder what the COVID rates will do in the next couple of weeks. There was one regular couple (he gets nude, she wears a very conservative suit) that set up near my stuff while I was off on my hike, much closer than usual. One other regular that wears bikinis set up in his regular spot, but spent his whole time standing in the surf reading. After a bit, 3 twenty-something girls set up almost on top of the couple (like 15 feet away). With them so close, I went over to notify them that I would be skinny dipping and they were ok with that. The gentleman of the couple is typically very circumspect about going nude whenever people are near but even he decided to go nude, even with the girls sitting in chairs in the surf, chatting away. For the record 2 were wearing slightly cheeky bottoms, and they never got topless. The flies finally drove the regulars, and myself off the beach. As I left, the girls were packing up. Other than the flies, it was a nice day.

I just bought a Black Flag bug zapper racket and will bring it with me to BI. I see tomorrow is also a NE wind. Guess it would be a waste of a 2.5 hour drive up there if the flies are that bad tomorrow too.???

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Wondered, Have you had any issues with the biting flies at Huntington Beach? I think i am gonna give it a try tomorrow since things don't sound satisfactory at BI with the flies. Might even bring my drone and take it for a flight to get an idea of the beach.

Also, is there any sand at Huntington Beach  thats packed enough to ride a bike on?

I see a trail further down towards the jetti that looks like it leads back  thru some thick foliage or something, and then to another small section of beach that faces the island just to the north of Huntington.

Can't ride a bike at Huntington, it's softer than Bird Island. You don't really need a bike as it's not a long walk from the parking area to find a spot to thong. I've never had an issue with flies at Huntington. I usually park in the north lot and then turn left at the beach to get away from the crowd.

Ok. Cool I have a beach cart I will drag behind me with my chair and cooler and such with me. I still wonder about this trail I see further down the beach on Google earth that looks like it accesses another sandy area. Will take my drone and do a fly over to check it out.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Are you referring to the sand spit at the far north end of the beach to the left of the jetty that faces the inlet rather than the icean? If so, you're better off accessing it from the jetty than taking that trail. The water in that section has a lot if jellyfish so I wouln't recommend swimming there though I've thonged there a couple times.

Got to spend a couple hours past the mailbox this afternoon. Lots of walkers & bikers as expected. Finally succumbed to the flies. They followed me all the way back to the street. Will try again tomorrow with more bug spray.

Spend $10 at Lowes and buy a Black Flag zapper racket. It's kinda fun to electrocute the flies. I used bug spray a few weekends ago and it helped but I burned thru an entire can in 1 day at the beach. My zapper takes AA batters (not included). Buy a small pack incase you end up using it alot and kill the batteries in a short time.

Yesterday was a fair day on Bird Island. The morning saw light winds from a northerly direction meaning biting flies. That resolved itself later as the wind shifted to becoming southerly off the ocean. That became a problem because of a dead fish problem, all of the Sunset Beach/Bird Island shores were covered with thousands of dead menhaden. (Fish). Looked worse than the ice at a Cornell/Harvard hockey game.

Was not a great day today, drizzly with periods of rain. I spent midday walking the dunes and behind collecting trash from the gap past the mailbox to just past the state line. CHS what weather forecast are you using? I checked several and the highest percent chance of rain was 20%. Also the wind is from the west, good for a fly less day.

Depends on the day & weather. I’d cruise on down to the end of West Main to check availability of parking and then go to one of the lots if it was crowded. If parking on West Main, remember to keep your wheels off the pavement and sidewalks. SBPD does issue tickets.
