Low tide , cloudy, windy, and lots of walkers. Patrol by twice in the last hour.

Sorry for you. It was great last Tues-Thursday. Beautiful weather and not to many walkers except on Wednesday. One lady sheller had to examine every single shell on the high tide line and especially those right in front of our cabana. I stared at her and was almost ready to let my cover slip, but my wife would have been upset if y had gone full Monty. The lady turned around and left just as she got to one of the other regulars. Other than that it was great

Was there for about 20 minutes today around 1pm and left. The flies were relentless. Heck, I was trying to leave on my bicycle and they were flying as fast as I could ride and were still biting my legs (3 on my right leg and 2 on my left). I should've looked at the wind direction forecast before heading out. Any wind that's out of the northeast (like today), north, northwest or west and the flies come out from the dunes. Really need a sea-breeze out of the E, SE, S or SW to keep them away.

So how is Bird Island shaping up for this weekend? Folly beach has the stupid sand and sea festival and I really going what a mess with the traffic and the 9000 people expected to show up out there.

Looks good. Was out there today. No flies, lots of sun, few walkers but the water was a bit chilly. Supposed to be warmer tomorrow

Beautiful day on Bird Island yesterday. A few others were there enjoying the great weather. No flies, few walkers, and a nice breeze. Today looks to be more of the same.

How do yall think the next couple of days are gonna be weather wise? Weatherbug says mostly sunny and 80ish. Managed a couple of days off and will come up if conditions are good.

I try to go by what that app says but its wrong mostnof the time.

Like Like today, I changed the radar to the satellite setting to show me the cloud cover over folly beach. It indicated that the clouds were moving off the coast in over the ocean, but when I got out to folly it was like 95% cloud cover, and the clouds were coming on shore from the ocean.

I find Coastal Carolina Storm Watch Weather at URL below is generally reliable regarding Bird Island weather. As others noted, North wind often brings biting flies. Enjoy! https://www.carolinastormwatch.com/index.php

What is the wind direction expected to be tomorrow?

Weather bug says North wind 5 to 10 to morrow but this late in the year are the flies still that bad?

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Chs, this late in the year, the flies aren't merely bad, they are terrible if the winds are from the North, or from the sound side.

I too was wanting to hit Bird Island toward the end of the week. With the chance of biting flies, I stayed home. I've learned my lesson on bitting flies. N or W or any combo of N and W in the wind direction makes for a bad day on the beach!

I will be in the area and hope to get there Friday-Sunday this coming week but if the winds are from the wrong direction one day I will go down to Huntington Beach State Park on the south side of Myrtle Beach. For me it is just a few more minutes drive and a lot shorter walk. I’ve been there once a couple years ago and enjoyed the day and sun. But the tranquility of Bird Island can’t be beat. Huntington is the first area South of Myrtle Beach that is legal for thonging.

OK so roll call. I've got 3 other people out here that just showed up in the last 20 to 30 minutes. A couple showed up about 15 minutes ago on bicycles and a 3rd guy by himself about 5 minutes ago. Then Another guy on foot carrying a boogie board. But when I got out here there was already a single guy out here wearing some kind of fullback bikini bottom and has since in the last 10 minutes change into a white G-string. Unfortunately good bit of foot traffic and a flies are kind of a pain in the ass today.

They were until about 2pm then th3y disappeared. And the foot traffic thinned out and got in some naked time. Other than 1 trip to the water naked, 5here was no one else nude moving around. Fairly heavy foot traffic all day. Left about 430pm.

Looks like the winds are 5 to 10 miles an hour coming out of the north -northwest today so I think from my standpoint I don’t wanna waste my one day of possible sun fighting with flies, so I’m going down to the Huntington Beach State Park on the southside of Myrtle Beach. I’ll probably set up on the northside and take a couple walks up and down the beach. Maybe I’ll see someone else out and about as well.

Finally made it out to Bird Island today. Long walk for sure.Windy and no sun made for a bad 1st time there.I'll give it another shot this spring when the weather hopefully will be a lot warmer. A lot of walkers today also all the way down to the jetty. Hopefully come spring I can get back and work on no tan lines.

It was an OK afternoon on BI for early November. The sun was shining but there was a steady 12 mph wind. High tide was around 3 pm, so I walked instead of riding my bike. On the return walk, I was glad I didn't ride my bike because the strong headwind and soft sand made it almost impossible to pedal. As I expected, there was no one sunning or sitting on BI. There were a few walkers, 2 runners, 2 fishermen and the occasional people going to the mailbox. I didn't see anyone in the water or wearing swim attire. It was a sure sign that the cooler weather has arrived.

Spent a couple of hours on Bird Island today. I even had a bikini suit with me. I had on a tee shirt, sweatshirt , hooded sweat shirt (hood up) a cap, sneakers and socks, silk boxers, sweatpants and gloves. In the bright sun with a windscreen, I was almost comfortable. What finally got to us was having to take our gloves off to turn the page on our kindles. I can’t wait for late March/ April

Anyone know anything about the state of NC purchasing Bird Island? Or some adjacent land?

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Deal closed @ a month ago. A strip of land (35 acres+|- along the beach from the town limits to the current reserve was added. As best as I can tell, the town limits are about 500 feet from the 40th crossover, about where the property line of the Brown House on the end of Main hits the beach. Also they have surveyed the crossovers at 40 & 39th for reconstruction over the winter, hopefully one or both will be ramped.

Bird Island air temperature in high 60s this afternoon. Heavy cloud cover, but occasional sun felt good. Broke in my new Good Devil C-String (GD1018): easy on and off; frame prevents folding, but easy to carry. Aside from infrequent walkers and few bike riders, I had the area near the NC/SC border to myself. Walked over 5 miles!

I got a couple of hours of sunning (HIS bikini or less) in today. The wind got pretty brisk and it got cooler before sunset. Believe it or not the biggest problem was the biting flies. Not even thinking about it tomorrow, the bottom is supposed to drop out temperatures wise.

Good and bad news. First the good news. The Town of Sunset Beach DID NOT close beach access yesterday at an emergency town council meeting. The bad news is that they closed public parking on the Island, and banned parking on the public rights of way (road shoulders). No problem for me as I have a house on the Island, and as the long as the Governor doesn't issue a shelter in place order, I may go down this weekend. This will definitely cut down on the walkers.

Copied from a post on a Sunset Beach Facebook group. presumably by the folks that run the pier. Just to clarify. . .. because their was alot of confusion yesterday after the meeting.... the pier will remain open as will the pier parking lot.... but our hours will be from 9am-5pm we will operate as usual with parking $10 a day .... and because the town is removing the public bathrooms we will allow access to our bathrooms free for all beach guests...but all vehicles must be out of our lot at 5pm because we must lock up our lot

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

I was there on Friday and according to the attendant at the pier parking lot, they would be closing when the governor's "shelter in place " goes into effect on Monday. I spent the day on Bird Island and enjoyed some great thonging weather. There were more people out walking, jogging, etc. than I expected. Everyone was keeping to themselves and most waved as they passed. The fresh air and exercise was good for everyone I would think. The fishing was slow, so I did a lot of walking wearing my new g-string from "riskybusiness " on ebay. Very comfortable and well fitting suit. Hopefully conditions will soon change and we can get back to the beach and actually converse with each other. Stay safe!

Sad news. The beach access is closed except for 12th and 33rd. No sitting or laying out. I’m not sure if the town will or won’t be enforcing that on the state property. I think parking is limited to 1 hr at the fishing pier, but don’t quote me on that.

In South Florida all parks and beaches are already closed. I expect the same to happen state wide. It is telling that we have many parts of the nation where it is common to have to pay to use out door spaces, and they can be closed. While there may not be an entry fee, most places charge you for parking. If you live somewhere in the West maybe you can go use the outdoors for free, with free parking, but that is not so for large parts of the nation.

Re:Bird Island, NC (near Sunset Beach)

Bird Island is free, you just have to get there. You can walk, run or ride a bike along the beach strand. You can also take a boat, kayak or SUP. What happened was boaters decided to party on the Little River inlet side of the former island and caused a ruckus, forcing the states hand. What is interesting is that the 20 or so acres at the tip where the stone jetty attaches is really South Carolina
