I dont know if I privately spoke with either of yall, but some friends of ours just got back from Folly and had an update for us:

AT HIGH TIDE, THERE IS NO BEACH.....well from our experiences the last few years, there is alittle beach left exposed. the only area I know that there isnt much beach left at high tide is the curve in the beach right next to a huge concrete structure that has been exposed due to beach erosion. Here you will probably be walking thru shin to knee deep waves to get back to yer car. No biggy though if yer not worried about getting alittle wet. you can also run thru the area in between waves.Its not bad at all!

IT ISNT THAT SECLUDED ANYMORE........well it wont be "totally" secluded early in the morning. But it also wont be packed with beach goers either! You will have your occasional beach walker/exerciser/ animal owner come down, but not all of them walk allllll the way to the end of the beach.  Honestly, from what we have seen the last few years, I bet you wouldnt have a dozen people come even remotely near you all day if you are way down at the tip of the island. Most will come to the curve and turn around. its NOTHING like the amount of people who walk the section of beach where the coastguard station and really tall dunes are the backdrop for the beach I (one of the last 2 sections between the groins) In these last 2 sections, you CAN get away with a thong, we have and later in the afternoon (around 4 or 5pm once it dies off) the girls have gone topless and in very slimpy bikinis. We have even stripped down naked and changed right there in the open on the beach!
THERE ARE SIGNS POSTED SAYING THAT YOU CANT USE THE PATHS IN THE WOODED AREAS ANYMORE AND THEY ARE OVERGROWN...... Now, this much I know half about, but the overgrowth I cant be sure of. I saw the signs last year but blew them off and we road our bikes thru the woods to come out at the small cove around the curve in the beach. I do know that if you want to take this shortcut, grab the bug spray (you will be eaten alive by the misquotes) and grab a stick so you dont walk into a small spider web. otherwise follow the trail straight off the pavement and uphill slightly, over the dunes.

NOTE!...if you need a place to rinse off, there are 2 shower heads at the Washout surfing area. (where the road gets very close to the beach and there are no houses between the road and the beach, just big rocks)

 I have uploaded some reference pictures in my profile to give a more accurate description of this area.

if you look in pic 2985, you can see that at some point the water has washed up into the marsh area, but this sand is soft. And it doesnt wash up that far on every high tide.  and in pic 2991, you can see how much warning you have if someone is coming your way. The only thing you have to worry about is the public safety 4 wheel drive golf cart that can make it down the beach kinda quick, but its VERY rare and you still have time to cover up.

 ok  so w eare down here at Folly for a few days, renting a boat for an entire day tomorrow to explore local secluded beached.

Yesterday we hit Folly. The hurricane wasnt too hard on the lighthouse end of Folly, but it ended up closing the beach park at the other end.

We were in very skimpy suits and only saw one other guy out there. We spoke to him and hope to see him again later this week on Folly Beach.

 back home now and had a great time.

 Ok, now that I have settled back in here in Ohio:

Our last day we spent out at Folly down by one of the new signs saying dangerous currents no swimming or wading. There was a pretty good undertow this whole week but we were careful. did NEED to go get in the water to cool off as there was a nice onshore breeze blowing.

The Folly beach park took a big hit from Irene and is closed for the rest of the year for repairs  but I dont know if they are going to get to a renourishment other than the scheduled one in 2013.

As for heading out to the lighthouse end, I can say that you really need to print out a tides table because we always went down about July 2nd and didnt have any issues with having no beach at hight tide. Plus when hitting the beach about 7:30am or so, the tide wal already half way out and we had a bunch of beach pretty much all day! And by the time we were done, about 3 or 4 pm, the tide was on its way back in.  But since going down last week, the tide was basically out at around 7am and coming back in for high tide at about 12 or 1pm and stayed up til almost 6pm, leaving hardly any beach, so we played the tides when heading out to the far end of the island.

we were able to be risqu'e and nude down past the beach park area because the park was closed. but again, high tide, hardly any beach.
HOWEVER, when we rented the boat and made it up to Dewees and Capers islands, we found that Dewees had quite a bit of beach at high tide, so we spent a great deal of that day roaming ALL over Dewees in the nude, even with boats just offshore fishing.

I will add to this if I think of any other helpful info about this area.

We vacation a few times every year on isle of palms as family members have houses there.  I've worn everything from board shorts to a thong.  I've seen numerous girls in thongs on Isle of Palms both at the very top of the inlet by the Links course, and just a bit south from the beach-club / Grand-pavillion areas (the main vacationer beach by the complex pool and volleyball courts)

Typically, as previously posted, the guys all wear board shorts.  However, there are TONS of Europeans in the last few years and it is totally common to see numerous speedo's or box-cut suits.  But, it is still 95% board shorts. Hopefully, the 5% begins to grow.  The girls are indeed wearing smaller cut back suits these days, to many different extents.  I agree that it is a great trend for all thong-lovers.  The girls in thongs are typically 26-35 years old, where-as somewhere like Miami or Hawaii, the thong girls are basically 18 and up.  Slightly older thong crowd here, I'd call it "experienced" and "self confident." 

I usually wear a shorter board-short type of suit (80% of time) but I often wear my running shorts (10%), a small speedo (5%), and a thong/rio now and then (5%).  When I've thonged, it has just been when the wife and I are hanging out on the beach, either early in day or late, and I typically have it on under a more common suit.  Or, late in the day after a run I may go for a swim in it but leave my running shorts on the sand nearby. 

Usually I have to chase the kids like a mile in every direction so I'll only thong when I'm going to remain in one place with a couple of beers/drinks with the wife.  I've also thrown a thong on when with other couples visiting us and walked around casually between the water and our chairs.  There's always safety in numbers that way and it usually comes via a "dare" from one of their wives.  Turning it into a game makes it easy and acceptable when it may often not be.

Please do note that this is a VERY conservative, family oriented beach scene.  It's not a "party beach."  With that said, I think I like to "mix it up" as well as "protect it."  Being a part time resident, I love the diversity we get but it is a 98% family scene so use your own discretion.  There is nothing wrong with throwing a towel down and laying out in a thong here, guy or girl won't be bothered, but please respect the privacy of the people around you who in many cases pay $2k to $10k a week for this wonderful sliver of sand for their family.  

I hope to see more hot suits in Charleston but please, as always, be respectful.  The people on this board are respectful -- so leading by example is the only way to stop others from giving us a bad name.

Based on my experience, I'd agree with thong4me above. We vacationed at IOP one May and I wore a skimpy bikini at the beach each day while my wife (g/f at the time) wore a brazilian style bikini. We layed out amongst others including families and passers by, no one bothered us at all. I really enjoyed the young college girls in their skimpy suits as well. I don't recall many speedos but we did stick to one area only.

was it an actual g-string, or thong of some design, or what is a fairly narrow backed bikini bottom? (still covering the crack)

I wouldnt doubt or question that you could get away with it, or it be luck that no one said anything, but having a cousin who works for the IOP public safety department, even he has said skimpy bathing suits are extremely rare, if even non-existent on the more family oriented beaches of Sully's and IOP.

Congrats though!! We actually chose Folly for said activity because of being able to walk the waters edge and the beach without issue. But we also enjoy nude beach sunbathing, so hence the reason we do Folly.

thonger2005. Sure, by skimpy bikini, I meant smaller than a speedo as in it covered my rear end but had 1/2" sides. An Ergowear JASZ suit to be specific.

I can understand people not wanting seriously skimpy/thong/ reveling swimwear on those 2 islands, but I wish there was a place over there for slightly riskier swimwear, somewhere away from the crowds, but the only place I can think of would be the harbor end of Sullivans, but then you have the crowds from Fort Moultrie.

IMHO, the ONLY way is to go down after the tourist season. My cousin says the patrols leave people alone more in the off season.

Another place where you MIGHT find skimpier wear would be Cummings Point, but its only assessable by boat, its on the harbor tip of Morris island. That is a heavy party location, so ya may see something there, but again...gotta get a boat first.

Back in Sept, we actually rented a boat and ctuised the harbor, and the intercoastal and heaqded up to Capers and Dewees island. Dewees was sweet! totally deserted other than the boats anchored between the islands. Capers was nice, but we had limited time since the tide was coming in.

We did see some thongs between the islands, and a couple of topless women walking towards us until thery slipped their tops on when we got near them, but once they saw what we were wearing, off the came within about 20 feet behind us.

Got loads of info about renting a boat and heading up to these 2 islands.

this is an article about CP on the post and courier site talking about the July 4th partiers leaving tons of trash on the island.

We were in  town  that week back in 2009. VERY busy holiday week!

Was there over memorial day week 2012 with my entire family and it was great weather.  Again, I stuck to my common plan when on the isle of palms which is chase my kids around in trunks or short running shorts.  Wore a black joe Snyder thong a few times under lacrosse shorts when just laying out on a towel.  I swam early am in a rio cut 'speedo' after a run on the beach, but other than the walk to and from the water I didn't really hang out in it.
Other than my wife who wears pretty skimpy rio bottoms, there was only one legit g-string/thong girl all week.  However, I did see tons of small rio cut suits on the ladies which was nice.  All the girls seem to be moving towrds the 'cheeky' tiny bikini bottoms that are 'almost' thongs.  If the trend continues, the next step has to be a thong, right?  Let's hope.
Either way, the beach was not as busy as I have seen during other memorial day weeks, but looking forward to August for some hopeful thronging and lounging around on this great beach.
PS: I bike a lot and when going over the bridge at 'breach inlet' on palm blvd., I saw a setup of guys and girls where 4 guys in board shorts, and all 4 girls in a thong.  I almost crashed my bike!   Great sign though!!   Even though this spot it is illegal to go in the water due to severe rip currents.

 Well we have decided on a vacation date for Charleston. Starting Aug 23rd. The nice thing is, its an open ended vacation. We are staying at one of my relative's houses who has recently been put in an assisted living and her kids are figuring out her home. Then we are shifting to a Condo just off the island.

We need this vacation! We are planning on our usual suits out on the beach down by the old coast guard station and along the long stretch of beach overlooking the lighthouse. (see my folly beach layout photo in my profile) Its a google earth picture with markers pointing out specific areas.

Was out by the Morris Island lighthouse at Folly today. One guy was in a thong my himself way at the end. I walked all the way down and when I walked back past him he was nude.

A couple was there at the middle of the beach. I said hello and set up a few yards down from them. They were probably in their 50s and the woman was topless and in a g-string when I greeted them and the man was in a sarong. I walked around in my speedo for a little while and eventually they got completely naked when they realized I was comfortable with it. I got completely naked too. I wish I had interacted with them more but wasn't sure if they wanted privacy or not. Anyway it was very fun being completely naked with the other couple just down the beach. She waved goodbye to me as they left. I will go down there again tomorrow and try to interact with them more....

 down here in Charleston this week. been out to Folly,\\My GOD has the beach eroded!!! There are areas where there is NO beach at high tide, but whats IS nice is, at high tide if you get around the curve in the beach, no one wonderes out there and you have the entire place to yourself, except for a stray boater.

I walked nude from the curve all the way to the tip of the beach with only 1 boater across the waterway anchored on Morris island.

headed back and spent some nude and thong/topless time in the last section of beach before the seawall.

Great time so far! But yeah...beach is seriously eroded!

The beach is pretty washd away. SOME places to use when the tide is fully up and the great thing is at high tide, no one comes around the curve in the beach that I have included in explaining where to go on Folly for nude and thongin.

Today we did the beach park end of Folly and since the tourist season is done and Labor day is out of the way, its pretty dead around here! We spent 100% of today in the nude down at the far end of the beach park area. nearest person on both sides was like 150 yards away. just a few beach walkers but no problems.

Saw the public safety cart come out one day and took someone away, seems there was an issue with her vehicle or something. we ran into a few people fishing out overlooking the light house and they all said.....they fish ALOT out there and have NEVER seen the safety patrol come down to the light house end of the island unless there is a problem.

We also managed to thong and go topless on Sulivans island yesterday starting at Station 17, but walking down the beach to where the Morris island light house was straight out in front of us. Cant exactly pinpoint where we were but no one was near us for atleast 300 yards. I didnt chance walking around naked but I did take my thong off and stayed in my chair.

 I recently moved to Charleston. I plan on going to the beach tomorrow. Where's the best place to thong in folley? Does anyone know if I can expect other similarly suited people tomorrow?

We have ben all 3 the last 2 weeks and didnt run into a single problem! well except the damn flies that sxwarmed us down at the beach park area yesterday, forcing us to relocate to the other end f folly near the sea wall. (see the photo, or send me a PM and I will get you more specific info.)

well crap..I forgot about posting something copied from Word.

 well if you know where folly beach is, head out there and make your way down the main drag (center Street) to east ashley ave. turn left at the only light on the island.
follow that all the way out past the Washout where everyone surfs, until you reach a dead end. Find a place to park and walk thru the big gate and follow the road where you might see other people walking. this road leads you out to the old coast guard station and out to view the Morris Island lighthouse. You will see the remnants of the building foundations that have graffiti on them, go past those until the pavement slowly becomes sand.
once yer out on the beach and can see the LH (light house) and a rock jetti, turn to your left and continue to follow the beach around the curve. Right before the curve you will see a decent sized ‘cove”/beachy area and not far from that some huge cement structure with grafitti on it also. once you are around the curve, you'll see a really long stretch of uninhabited beach. this is where we thong and go nude, and have even had sex in the middle of the day during the week because everyone is at work.
if you head all the way out to the tip of the island, you will have TONS of warning if anyone heads in your direction. Even with binoculars, they couldnt tell what you are, or are not wearing. The only thing I do is cover up if i am nude when a boat goes by, making their way out to the sandbar around the lighthouse That sandbar varies from year to year. This year its about 75 yard off the secluded section of beach, but if you walk down that stretch of beach, you get away from the anchored boats. I have even walked naked along the waters edge about 11am and carried a pair of see thru shorts balled up in my hand.
Now, the OTHER end of Folly is the beach park area. You can pay the $8 and park in the parking lot, and head out to the beach, turn and walk away from the lifeguard chairs and it will become more deserted the further you walk. This area was hit VERY hard in 2011 by TS Irene and the sand from the parking lot and dunes washed back into the marsh area. (see my pictures in the Folly layout folder) Again, wide open beach facing back towards the parking lot and plenty of warning. The picture pf thr coast guard gate is abit small but it gives you an idea. It has 2 blue garbage cans in it. The trail to the main stretch of beach is in the right center of the picture. Then the gate…well that’s obvious, right in the middle of the picture.
Regarding the coast guard area:
If you park near the coastguard gate, you will see 2 beach houses up in the air quite a ways out towards the water with a small parking area next to them. Look to your left alittle and you will see the small trail I showed you in the picyre.  if you walk out to the beach and turn left,. you'll start seeing groins in the sand leading out to the surf. the best areas for thongs and even topless are the last 2 sections of this main stretch of Folly beach. The backdrop for this are is tall dunes and the old coast guard station. You have plenty of warning in both directions, but not as much as you would on the first section of beach that I mentioned.
If you have the means, you can access this area alot easier on a mountain bike or beach cruiser. The other nice thing is, if you see that an afternoon rain or thunderstorm is coming thru (notorious for charleston in the summer) keep in mind that rain will run everyone off the beach! If you have the means, and monitor the weather. Once the rain passes or you see that it's only rain and not a storm, you'll have a good 2 hours to go nude almost ANYwhere on the beach! I have taken a beach umbrella with me on my mountain bike and see that its only rain, I head back towards the curve in the beach and hang out in the trees under the umbrella until the rain passes (if its a good downpour). A few times, I was hit with a small passing rain that cleared the beach and got in a nude bike ride along the coastguard section of the main drag, and around to the tip of the island overlooking the lighthouse.

Does anyone know the thong status on "Isle of Palms"?  I'm being asked to take a trip with a friend.

Looking at Google Maps' satellite view, it appears that the coastal side is about two miles, mostly houses with beach access pathways (one of those is the supposed target of where I might be staying).  I also see a few shops, a county park, a resort, and perhaps a few apartment/condo complexes.

Anyone ever been on the beach in the area?

 I would shy away from IOP unless its off season, like now or Oct/ Nov.

If you want thong ability, just go to Folly. See my husbands directions above. Somewhere in his pictures you will also find a Google Earth pic thats labeled for thonging and topless of Folly.

IOP is way too family oriented as is Sully's (Sullivans island). A few have said they thonged on Sully's but we choose not to chance it unless we can get alittle ways away from people and we wouldnt parade around or do much out of our chairs on the beach.

I am going to be in Charleston on Tuesday, April 22.  I've booked a room at the Radisson at the airport because they have an indoor pool and hot tub.  Does anyone know the thong friendlyness of hotels in the area?

 visited the area this week for work. went out to folly beach for a stroll.  didnt see a soul.  the weather was hot and sunny and the place is very pretty.

There is no such place as the old coast guard station beach. if you mean the area of beach that runs parallel to the CGS, you do NOT want to go nude along this section of beach, between the groins! Too many people walking by and people surf fish off the beach along here. (this area is labeled thong and topless area in my pictures)

You wanna go nude, walk around to the section of beach that overlooks the lighthouse! Everyone should look in my pictures for my Folly beach layout folder and open the last picture. I used Google Earth and used push pins as markers of where the area is for topless and thongin, and the best area for going nude.

 Hows the thonging this year around Folley Beach? I'm thinking about heading down in a week or 2 to work on my tan lines. Debating on trying my thong or bikini style swim suits?

So I have been to the end of the beach near the lighthouse.  During the week several times last year.  Only a few people up and down the beach and just guys staying to tan.  Two or four most days although one day I was by myself all afternoon.  Most everyone would strip down discreetly and tan if no one was walking or boating nearby.  Most of the guys say as long as you cover up when somebody walks by then its okay. Butts are okay and a couple guys wore g-strings all day and had no problems. Most would turn on their backs when someone would walk by.  The times in my string most passerby would not look at you but just keep walking on. If I spoke to them they would speak but keep moving on.  The tide dictates if you have a beach or not. High tide the beach is only a few feet, low tide and you have forty feet of sand and have to wade out a few hundred feet to get under water.  So for the first time this year I hit it on a Sunday. Big difference with the crowd and the amount of people.  More Later,

 Can you still go to folly and wear a thong out their  or better yet can you go nude, time to start working on our all over tans, did not know if the beach is still their after the hurricane last year...

 Yes you can still come and go topless as well as nude sunbathe on that stretch of beach on Folly Island overlooking the Morris Island Lighthouse. You'll have plenty of warning with someone walking in your direction to slip something on. But the patrols usually do not constantly Patrol that end of the island. They will only go out there if they get a Call of a complaint of some kind. Otherwise it is not continuously patrolled. And even then if you're beyond halfway down that Beach you're still going to have plenty of time to cover up

What's the activity been like out around Folly? Heading there this week!

 Its been  great summer so far with no problems this year...

 Well is anyone going to be out their this weekend for the last weekend of summer, or no one goes to folly anymore...

 Well looks like Folly Beach really took a beating from Irma. Down at Lighthouse Inlet the dunes along the crest shaped Beach are completely washed away. The trees close to the concrete structure on the beach are completely rearranged and any sand back inside the trees are completely gone. There used to be a small hill that you could walk up a trail and get around the deeper water at high tide but now all of the trees are bunched together where there's virtually no Trails going through the woods. Also on the ocean front side of folly in the area of the old Coast Guard Station where there were about 12 foot tall Dunes,  the beach probably lost 25 to 30 ft of those Dunes which in turn exposed some sort of round concrete structure that was buried under the dunes. Have not ventured down to the beach Park area yet but I'm guessing it took a pretty good hit also.

 Well got out their last week and their is now a private beach at high tide, as you can only get out to the beach now during low tide or a tide coming in or going out ... the beach near the trees is totally gone at high tide....Sad to see all the erision that occurred out their..

 I haven't been out there at a full high tide yet but I can see where the surf washes back further into the Marsh Grass area down there close to the trees. Also not exactly sure how deep the water gets on the trail that leads through the woods. Hopefully it's deep enough that it keeps people from walking through the woods to come out to the crescent-shaped part of the beach. I'm going to check the tides for the next couple of weeks and see if we're supposed to have a high tide during most of the day.

 every weekend both saturday and sunday. Its been fairly quiet with other nude bathers or thongers. Many a day its only me out there.

Is there beach area or is it eroded pretty far up?  It is always changing but would be good to know how big of a beach currently exists there.  

  there's a good bit of Beach area at high tide. So you don't have to worry about having to sit on the dunes during high tide. There is one section just past the wooded area that can force you to walk through a little bit of water or maybe at most ankle-deep waves as you're heading out. But once you get about 1/4 of the way out, there's plenty of Beach during high tide and the nice thing is less foot traffic at high tide
