I agree with thonger362, you won't have a problem, just as they suggest, take a taxi from the port and in 10 minutes you're in Mahahual. That's right, lots of people there from the cruise ships. Another option would be a tour of Bacalar, it has a spectacular lagoon and I don't think you'll have any issues with your thong. Just so you know, if you're up for it, buy the tour with the cruise line for extra security in case there's any delay with your return, they'll wait for you. It's about an hour and a half away and the tour lasts a couple of hours, but it's worth it, the Lake of the Seven Colors is spectacular!

Take into account that sunscreen is not allowed in Bacalar lagoon. I wore a g-string there, but I they didn't let me touch the water (I preferred to protect myself from the sun).
