Date Posted:01/09/2004 05:04:44Copy HTML It's safe to assume that the vast majority of users here enjoy the minimal size of thongs and for many of us, if we could get away with just wearing our thong to walk to the beach/pool/park/etc. we would. That often isn't the reality though so I thought I'd raise the issue of cover-ups (a topic usually reserved for the ladies). I usually only get to thong when I'm on vacation and previously have used tight lycra short shorts or running shorts as a cover-up to get from the hotel to the beach. I've been interested more recently in getting something a little different: loose short shorts or light-weight pants/trousers. The idea of something that could potentially show the thong underneath is something that appeals but I'm struggling to find anything suitable. Possibilities so far include: (1)Onionskins- white seems the logical choice but does anyone knows if any of the other colours are also translucent (esp. with the liner removed)?
(2)Aussie Bum Shorts-again looking at the whiteoption
(3) get somepants made in a sheer fabric by an online dance store or similar Does anyone else have any ideas? I'm especially interested inoptions I could get online or easily in the UK.Thanks!

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/09/2004 05:12:29Copy HTML Usually if I am going to be going back and forth to the motel, restaurant, etc, I will wear a thong with a slide back. That way, when I get up I just pull the rear open from a thong to a 5 inch back and nobody knows it isn't just a regular Speedo. I usually have them made as a very low cut front, 5 inch slide back from Dore.
Aside from this, I usually just wear jean cut-offs, very short. Monte |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/09/2004 05:31:55Copy HTML Nicthong, maybe heswimwears split shorts are an alternative, if you choose white or some light colour? If you buy them without liner they are quite transparent. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/09/2004 11:19:42Copy HTML Undergear has cotton gauze split shorts. I wear a black color for coverup, took out the liner, but other colors are available, sometimes not lined is available. I used unlined bright almost flourescent Green gauze split shorts till they wore out. Parr of Arizona lists a good short rise unlined gauze pair, but I haven't seen a copy yet.

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/09/2004 11:56:47Copy HTML The above suggestions all approch this from the bottom up, so to speak. You have to put shorts on and pull them up. My approach is a little different. I wear a long running singlet (tank top) when biking to the beach. It hangs down and looks natural. Just a long shirt. While it is obvious that I don't have standard shorts you don't know if I have a short Speedo or a thong on under neath, unless I reach up or bend over, or it is a mesh singlet. (Often is a blue mesh singlet). Hangs down to just about crotch high. When I am standing up an onlooker can see that I don't have shorts on but what I do have on is mystery. This only works when I am standing up stright. After a photo appeared of me on the bike, I relize I am flashing a full bum when biking to the beach. Nobody who passes me on the road while I am going to be beach is unaware I'm wearing a thogn or g-string. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/09/2004 09:43:58Copy HTML I've used tank tops and longer mesh shirts before, as JM said, but if I don't want to wear a top, my favorite is a mesh sarong. They're super easy to get on and off; no bending or one footing on the beach or wherever as with shorts. The mesh still allows a tan, and the thong can still be seen relatively easily, but it's enough to keep the cops from being called. When circumstances allow, you can use it as a headwrap and let your thong be out in the open. I love 'em, and first started wearing them when rollerblading, because shorts are too hard to get on and off over the blades. It may be considered a feminine article of clothing by many but I've honestly never heard a negative comment while wearing one, like I have in just a thong. iowan |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/10/2004 11:32:32Copy HTML I agree that a sarong is a good solution. Another option is the hot pants from Skinzwear.com. They are low rise in front and expose some of the cheeks in the back. You could get them in a mesh fabric, if you want something somewhat see-thru. I have a couple pair in lycra and have used them as beach coverups. They're very lightweight and comfortable.

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/10/2004 04:02:34Copy HTML Thanks for the recommendation to the Skinz hotpants. Terriffic look for both male and female!, but I cannot think of an occasion to wear them, you can find swimsuits to wear both more bare or less bare.
I'm also concerned about the lack of leg elastic in the male suits. Do you fall out? Do the hot pants feel more comfortable than a swimsuit? Or are they only for coverup worn over a swimsuit, thong, gstring etc? |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/11/2004 05:29:49Copy HTML For a short while in the late 1970s men could wear perrios at resorts like Club Med. You could tie them in many interesting ways, and they were very cool and comfortable. Then the macho fashion police decided that was too femine now it seems that only women wear them. When I've worn them on U.S. beaches you get the stupid comments. Undergear makes shorts that are lined which are quite short. You will never fall out of them. You can wear unlined shorts by pulling them low on your hips, which can also expose your thong or g-string strap on your hips if you like. I've never cared for long t-shirts because I find that I get hot when I walk down the beach in them. Bare chested in a lot more comfortable. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/11/2004 06:26:59Copy HTML How about tight white lycra shorts and a dark coloured thong underneath, or even white as that should show up against the skin. You can get Viga brand lycra shorts online in the UK. Would look good at the gym! (Wish I was brave enough!). |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/11/2004 06:57:44Copy HTML I agree with sebastianspencer. Lifestyles Direct (tan through suits) have mesh shorts that are very comfortable and lightweight. I have two pair that have patterns, Safari blue and Leopard paisley. I wear them at the beach and to go to mailbox around house in the summer. The prints add some cover at a distance but the solids you can see through easily. Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/11/2004 10:39:31Copy HTML I know many of you seem to be casting around for some type of apparel that is revealing, see-through, etc. On my thonging vacations, I?e taken exactly the opposite route: a baggy pair of cotton cargo shorts, similar in profile to dork-shorts. (I can already hear the You can have some fun with this, though. Imagine: you walk around the beach/pool dressed like all the other guys out there, but after you set up your towel and ditch your flip-flops and shirt, you go one step further and strip down to a piece of swimwear that is smaller than anyone else?, male or female. Just when everyone thinks you?e some average dork-short type of guy, "Gotcha!" |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/11/2004 01:05:05Copy HTML Beachfolks, I only wear the skinzwear hot pants as a coverup. They cover too much for swimwear and too little for regular shorts. When worn over a thong or g-string, they comfortably provide you enough extra coverage for getting to and from the beach, or for walking the beach if you don't want to do that in a g-string.

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/12/2004 04:32:17Copy HTML Yerasimos is right on with this one. Usually, I just wear some sort of regular shorts to the beach and ditch the shorts once I get there. Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:01/20/2004 10:37:57Copy HTML Well, I said I'd keep you posted as to my findings/decisions so here goes: I'm really looking for a 'bottom half' cover up so t-shirts etc are out of the equation for me (just a personal preference). I think I'm gonna try to find some 'regular' board shorts (not too long, not too baggy I hope!) that, as Dennis and Yerasimos say, I can then remove to reveal the thong. However, I'm still considering my options for a briefer alternative... I have a natural preference for smaller, tighter clothing anyway. The HE Swimwear shorts look like they might look a little big on me (I'm 5'11" and toned but very 'slight' so I need clothing that has a narrower fit)... plus they're quite expensive. LifestylesDirect's shorts look as though I'd have the same problem with the fit... |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? I've worn mine as a cover up for wearing to the beach. I've owned two pair for over 10 years now. The more I wear them the more they fit like a thong! Man do they evr give you a great feeling with their short inseam and masculine fit! I've posted a link for Nu-Parr in the links section. They are also one of the oldest thong manufacturers in the US.Come on AZ Craig.. give us your opinion on these nice shorts. Phoenix is depending on you, Sir!

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:11/25/2006 11:21:26Copy HTML There are times when wearing your thong, g-string, or other minimal swimsuit may not beaccepted or just not feel right. It may be between the car and the water, when the beach is overrun by too many people to be comfortable thonging in front of, going into a business, or other times.
This question here is not "when do you wear a coverup" which would be another interesting topic someone else can start, but instead "what type of coverup do you prefer and why?" I would expect men and women to have different preferences of course. If anyone has encountered specific rules regarding coverups that would be of interest too. My BF/Husband Randy likes the really athletic tank tops -- string shoulders, narrow back, and deep cut arms. This keeps most of his back bare and shows off most of his chest and nipples too. These types of shirts are generally accepted in all but the strictest buinesses as tops when worn with shorts or jeans, but have their origins as athletic club wear. But the tank tops he uses for coverups are also short -- short enough that at the bottom parts of his buns are exposed. Most people don't notice the bare buns when he's walking at the beach -- most se a guy in a top, but those that are observant do, and often comment positively about the look. When shorts are necessary, he's hooked on his skimpiest cut-offs. These are shorts which are well worn or "distressed and trashed" as they say now, usually have split leg seams and worn-through places exposing skin and virtually no inseam. They are too minimal to be worn without something covering the family jewels. I prefer the look of hemed mini length low-rise shorts on myself. These are the tiny shorts sold at the Gap and similar trendy mall stores. They don't cover a lot, and most men like the look. I usually use my swimsuit top if a top is needed, but the shorts look is even better when a woman can still go topfree. A t-shirt can be added for those times when exposure even with a swimsuit top is too risque. I have also worn a mini-skirt, but think the shorts are even better as a swimsuit coverup. Nikki who is a thonger who often goes topfree prefers longer oversized T-shirts that are so baggy they are not the least bit sexy. She makes sure they are at least mini-skirt length and maybe a bit longer. Shirts sold as "night shirts" are her favorites. She only covers up when absolutely necessary, and tries to spend as much time as possiblewearing just her minimal swimwear. Her philosophy is that if she needs to cover up, she won't feel sexy any more so why dress that way and that there is no logical reason to wear minimal coverups. If you need to coverup, make it complete. She also says it is more fun taking her baggy shirts off in front of the others on the beach (like when she first arrives) because of the shock value to those around her. Taking off one piece of tight fitting cloths after another is more of a striptease act she says. Mark (Nikki's Husband) who is also into thongs, but does not always wear them all the time, prefers a more traditional swimsuit over his thong as a coverup. He likes to be able to check out the crowd and dress down as far as he feels comfortable. He might even go multiple layers -- board shorts over running shorts over a Speedo over a thong. This way he can select the number of layers to uncover initially and then either uncover more or recover himself in stages as the day goes along. Traci |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:11/27/2006 11:45:59Copy HTML I use a running top. Made of polyester, coolmax or what ever it's called. It covers my chest and back. I have looked out for the skinny long ones that will, depending on the top in question, reach some where near the bottom of my but. I wear it when bicycling the mile from home to the beach, and back. I put it on when I come off the sand, and always wear it if I go to the beach front coffee shop. With a casual glance or from a distance it may look like I am wearing speedos under the top, but close observation from the rear, or when bending, would edify the observer. They mostly cover the front and most of the rear, and in doing that, remove the in your face aspect of wearing a thong in public. Some of the white ones are a little bit on the mesh side and the outline of the thong some times shows through. One or two of the tops have mesh panels set into the sides for better cooling. They are, after all, running singlets. (Singlet may be a misunderstood word. I have no idea why running singlets are loose and stop below the waist but wrestling singlets are tight spandex and include built in shorts. In the past I did use cotton singlets of the T shirt type, but prefer the polyester mesh - coolmax type because:
I sometimes revert to the warmer cotton tops on cold days. Speedo makes a good one that's sort of waffled and warm. In the past you could purchase singlet that had a small split on the bottom of the side seams and that had a longer tail than the front. They were excellent cover-ups, but alas, the style has vanished. I almost always wear a running cap too. Because it's mesh and cool, because it has a rakish cut, and because it keeps the sun out of my eyes so I end ups smiling at people instead of squinting.

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:11/30/2006 08:00:28Copy HTML When I go to my local beach near The Hague, Holland, I take my bicycle, a 20 minute ride. Most of the time, I have a string or thong already on, covered by a T-shirt and some kind of short. That short can be a "normal" short, length just above the knee, or a cut-off jeans that is really short, inside length about 1". When cycling, I have to pull it down a little to be covered all the time.
The spot, where I enter the beach, is the most crowded part. I walk to the shoreline and take off my shoes and drop my short. Then I walk to a suitable place at the nudist section, a good 500 meter further. During my walk past the crowded, family-orientated part only the lower 2" of my stringfront is visible, at the back, no fabric is visible. Even when I have a rather revealing suit on like a teardrop model, nobody will have even a hint, unless it is very windy or I have to raise my arms for some reason. When I do my beachwalks, I put on a moderate string or thong like the Dore low cut or very low cut. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:12/10/2006 11:23:44Copy HTML Lately, when going to my favorite beach on the Rhode Island shore, I strip to my g-string at the car and wrap a white bath size towel around my waist, one I won in a triathlon which has some race writing in blue on one end, a nice decorative touch. A couple of minutes down the beach, away from the crowds, I can whip it off, roll it up, carry it in my hand and start tanning well before reaching my spot on the beach for the day. Reverse operation at the end of the day. When my wife is with me, or in conservative Bermuda, I'll generally wear longish FILA gym shorts 'til reaching our beach spot, then strip to the g-string or thong. This is especially convenient in Bermuda, as the shorts are long enough to meet local standards when riding about on a motor scooter, yet I don't mind tossing them on the sand or getting them a bit salt water wet, unlike a nice pair of bermuda shorts. It all comes back to what is appropriate for the occasion.

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:03/16/2007 09:00:43Copy HTML I tend to prefer a regular t-shirt over my thong. That way I can pick the length (i.e. oversize or only long enough to cover part of the buns) to suit the situation. I like the short t shirts best because, as Traci noted, most people don't notice the thong, but some always do. Of course they are the ones who are staring, and anybody who looks that closely will always have a positive reaction. This is a great outfit when you don't want to offend, but also want to be noticed. Last year on vacation I had another reason to wear a coverup; it was just too dang cold in the morning to lie out in just a thong, and even walking the beach without a coverup was dicey staying warm, unless you did a real power-walk. So there was no reason to wear shorts. By late morning and all afternoon, the coverup was unnecessary. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:12/22/2009 11:03:52Copy HTML It depends. At the pool, it might be a towel to avoid parading around the pool deck. At the beach, I might approach it two fold.
1) If the beach is known to allow thongs/g-strings, then a loose pair of cargo shorts and a tee shirt. Both serve as double duty as a towel or place to put my head while sunning. 2) If the situation is more unknown, cargo shorts with a bikini underneath. This is the lease preferred solution on a hot day. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:04/06/2011 11:51:44Copy HTML I’d like to find a pair of mid-thigh shorts, maybe 5-6” inseam, that are somewhat see-thru, to wear as a coverup from the car to the beach over my speedo or thong. They’d be my male version of the gauzy wraps and sarongs that women wear over their bikinis. Those are great because they lend a touch of modesty, yet still reveal the intended beach attire for the day. My shorts shouldn’t be too gauzy, though, that's blatant, like shouting ‘NOTICE ME’; I prefer the 'Who me?' approach, the 'innocent' denial that I was aware my thong was showing.
Boardshorts work great as a coverup, and make a nice fashion statement, but they suggest that's what you’ll be wearing all day, so when you take them off on the beach, it looks too much like a strip-tease. Depending on the venue, I sometimes enjoy the rush of stripping to my thong at the car, then wearing nothing more for the rest of the day. But other times I prefer to keep it more low-key. I’d just like to avoid the complete coverup of boardies or trunks. Any suggestions? Thanks. |

they arent as obvios as my net or mesh shorts, but they will shot thru fairly well. an example of this is in my profile pix, me on a bike with some see thru exercose pants with those holes in them. i just cut the lining out of them. |

Re:Cover-up recommendations? (coverup) Date Posted:04/07/2011 03:52:14Copy HTML Thonger2005, that's a great idea about cutting the lining out of the holy athletic shorts, making them more see-thru. Also more airy for beach use. Your photos show the effect brilliantly. Likewise, HAPPENSTANCE, some white nylon soccer shorts may just do the trick, and I like the idea of sporty pinstripes down each side. My next trip to Sports Authority I'll check their wares out carefully, maybe take a couple of my favorite suits to test the see-thru effects of various shorts.
BTW, I have some really sharp long white Nike running shorts with navy side stripes that I plan to wear at Bay-2-Breakers 12k road race next month. I usually wear white compression shorts underneath, but plan a bikini this time instead, as the race finishes at the ocean and I may go in for a swim. In testing them, nothing shows thru. That's good, I prefer it for racing, but it won't serve my needs as a beach coverup for that very reason. Thus my posting and my search. Thanks for your suggestions, guys, appreciate it, I think I'm on my way. |
