If you read enough texts on this forum you can easily convince yourself its socially acceptable to wear thongs anywhere. But if you read enough texts elsewhere, or just take a look around most pools and beaches, it clearly isn't - or simply very very few people want to.(Although this year in the Canary Islands I noticed as many girlsunder12 wearing them as girls over 12). However, in practice it is ok to do it - if you really want to; no-one will say anything.

The question I found myself asking this summer was "Do I want to?" Amongst the prevalence of out-of-shape young men in knee-length board shorts (some down to the ankle - my God, I thought; men are now swimming in trousers!), I found a skimpy Rio sufficiently daring while denying them the opportunity to potentially criticize a bare bottom.

As a committed weight-trainer my physique is unfashionably defined, and I'm un-Victoria in daring to bare skin above the knee. I get sufficiently disapproving or jealous looks from other guys, even if I'm in jeans so long as I'm bare-chested, so its sometimes hard to tell whether people are looking because of my physique or because of my choice of swim-wear.

I assume fashion will, given time, turn full circle, and the time will come when skimpy swimwear for men and defined physiques will again be common-place.By which time I will be too old to compete with the young twenty-somethings who will have girls all over them. So for the moment I'm enjoying being one of the fittest looking guys at almost any beach or pool I visit.

In addition, people no longer assume you're gay because you wear a thong (even if it mattered) - since almost no-one wears them and at least many more people on the beach are likely to be gay!Long may this state of affairs continue!

A well considered and sensible posting.
Any group with a 'cause' to promote can easily believe that its unusual practice is widespread when they get together and discuss it. Unfortunately, thong wearing is still the exception on most beaches. Not that that should stop us as I agree that most people (some groups of teen boys excepted) don't mind or enjoy seeing a fit looking man in a thong.
I have a good physique (but probably not so defined through weights) too and all the points made are spot on. I agree with everything said above.
Also noticed more younger girls wearing thongs at beaches, pools and waterparks - but more the under 16s, rather than pre-teens. Perhaps we are seeing the start of the normal beachwear of the generation brought up with thongs from childhood and whose mothers are also committed thong wearers? Interesting.

The very fact of so few others wearing thongs makes my wearing a thong all that more daring and delicious. I don't mind being a little sensational, but try to avoid confrontations. I don't think thongs will ever go away. They've been worn for hundreds or thousands of years.

Keep in mind that "fashion" is a business and it is influenced largely by business people masqurading as experts or fashionistas as they call themselves. The bottom line is that fashion is out to sell you something!  Have you ever heard one of these people say "Keep wearing what you wore last year it's still in fashion"

In that regard since there are only so many original ideas for clothing and in general people's willingness to wear substantially more or less clothing than others around them there are boundries to what they can do to make something to sell you.

So these principles mean there are cycles in fashion that repeat themselves about every 30 years so that those younger people buying won't associated the latest trend with something they remember or still own.

The other day I saw an old movie on TV from about 1966 where the women were scantily dressed by those standards.  They wore tailored tank and halter tops and low slung, tight white pants, white thong sandals in the tropical setting.  The hairstyles and accessories as well as the clothes would fit in well at an affluent resort today.

With one exception I was quick to notice!

The women's pants, though very fitted over the ass and thighs, were maybe slightly fuller through the crotch in back....or were they?  You guessed it!   That look was from the big shorts style underwear they had, a look now that allows the pants to tightly fit in the crack and crotch because of thong underwear.

Regarding swimwear the same cycles will prevail.  For women the one piece of the 50's went to the bikini in the 70's the string bikini in the 80's with a few thongs, then the boyshorts of the 90s (harking back to the transition of one piece to bikinis in the 60's with now more modern tighter materials) then now to the low slung bikinis and string bikinis of the 2000's.  Guess what's next on the cycle?  Yes thongs are next!

Take into account the familiarity of the fit and comfort (or false reputation of discomfort) now in place from widespread thong underwear sales, the trend toward comfort levels in less clothes and I think that the thong will become fashionable in the next 5 years for women.

The mens fashion trends are different because they are much slower to react to women's trends and men buy less clothes.  Then factor in a new issue in fashion sales:  Body size/shape of the average person!

For mens fashions this will be a big issue as not most, but MOST ALL American men are overweight or obese and swimwear fashion has no where to go but circus tents.

With that said the mens trends have gone away from long trunks to tight lycra shorts to bikinis now.  Look at the ads in women's magazines and in mens fashion magazines and you'll see speedo size suits regularly and it doesn't look like the women in the pictures are making fun of the "banana hammock on that guy"

Remember too that fashion trends and sales thrive on communication of the trends, just enough information to indicate to those who see themselves on the cutting edge---whether they be Vogue magazine editors or just well dressed big spending consumers.  So newspaper or on line articles about thong or minimal swimwear would really light the fire under the fashion swing toward thongs.

Can you imagine the response to an article like this in the New York Times, GQ or even the Miami Herald:

Tiny Men's Swimwear is Getting Big

You've maybe seen them in movies or on a tropical beach, the guy in a thong bathing suit.  Well the internet has been fueling a trend in this tiny swimwear for him, and suits smaller than some women would wear on the beach.  A South Florida seamstress working out of her home has become the world's best known swimwear maker of these tiny suits.............................................................  In Europe there are several on line makers....................

Men have been getting in shape lately and women have noticed this trend.............................  Men are grooming their entire bodies, shaving and waxing body hair................................The metrosexual man.................

Where do men wear these?  Well South Beach long known for women sunbathing topless and wearing thongs has more than its share of men fans..........................  Thong fan Bob Smith, a financial analyst from Manhattan comes to Key West each year...............................   Long thought of as only for gay men, thongs ....................

Holly Thomas a graduate student at UCLA recently sunbathing on Venice Beach said; "I think it's great men are getting to show off their shape........."

I've had enough of this "straight guys only wear dork shorts" BS. I happen to know quite a few gay people here and they ALL wear the longest dork "shorts" you can imagine for swimming.

Personally, I can't swim in this crap. It keeps TONS of water and acts like those parachutes thrown from the back end of fighter jets when they're landing. When I almost drowned wearing such a horrible piece of "swimwear" fifteen years ago, I swore to stick to small, tight-fitting kit and haven't looked back ever since.

One of the reasons I hate wearing anything baggy anytime I get in the water is the way they fill up with air.  I suppose if I ever could find the longer ones with vents, they wouldn't seem so awful.

cheeky!! they say visible thongs are trending hard at NYFW 23, after looking at these pictures a part of me is trending hard too!! Visible thong now means see thru dress/pants with thong - more than the whale tale or straps above pants in the past.

Another fashion article about the popularity of thong bikinis. I think it's funny a lady by the name of Butchart was talking about following the trends. "As you can see from this Butt Chart thongs are getting smaller" https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2025/aug/21/the-thong-bikini-boom-why-the-skimpiest-swimwear-is-back-and-suddenly-mainstream

Noticing how fashion trends seem to affect all sorts of clothing lately. I heard an influencer who's had videos of her in a microkini doing interesting stunts with over 13 million views talking about her habits. Living in S Fla I've seen her around walking barefoot everywhere. She's said that walking barefoot is like a "nude beach for your feet". That's the opposite of what I've heard nudists say "a nude beach is like being barefoot all over your body" So we've seen women's microkinis get smaller and single strings available from more and more places! Now a fashion trend is starting with shoes- shoes that don't cover the front of the sole or toes- so you're half barefoot! This is sort of the footwear analog of a single string bikini--- though not illegal in public! Yeah this is beyond the "microkini" of footwear like thin strap Havaianas. This is a departure from "barefoot sandals" which are essentially small chains or straps secured around toes and ankle without any bottom- for decoration- or as a foil to avoid someone calling the wearer out as barefoot in a place they're not supposed to be barefoot.

Thongs seem to be kind of rare this past summer. Not sure why that is. Seemed to be more last year for some reason? G-strings are making a dent. Depends on where you are at and the "mood" of the beach. "Young" beaches seem to be more lively. I think few beaches in the U.S. can measure up to sexy Miami Beach.
