If you like to wear thongs then paddle boarding around Fort Lauderdale canals and rivers will give you LOTS of positive feedback.
If you are gay or don't mind hanging with a LGB crowd then you might want to look into the FLoatarama on Saturday June 12th. A boat parade from Down Town Fort Lauderdale to Sunrise Bridge. I am sure all the boats involved will be speedo and thong friendly. https://pridefortlauderdale.org/floatarama

It does seem a litte strange they are starting the parade at the Stranahan House, on the East side of downtown, where there is very little room to turn and the water taxis are always pulling in and out. A better place to assemble would be just West of the 4th-7th Avenue Bridge, just West of Cooley's Landing. That way they could parade through down town where people can see them from the Riverwalk and restaurants.
High tide is at 11am that Saturday, so depending on the weather I might paddle up the river in the early morning and come back down with the falling tide. I don't know the time they think they are doing the FLoatarama.

Another major gay event is the FlockFest Beach Event a month later on July 10.  A huge beach event which will again be very speedo and thong friendly. FlockFest, 11:00am-4:00pm 1100 Seabreeze Blvd. https://www.flockfestevents.org/fort-lauderdale

Hey JMruns, I am looking forward to my 4th Sunsplash this summer. Staying on the beach where I always stay and looking to plan more recreation this time instead of just laying around the beach.

I want to rent a bike for my visit but I want a roadworthy hybrid or mountain bike type that has gears so I can put in some decent mileage each day touring the island. Do you have any recommendations of somewhere on the beach that I can rent this type of bike? I am Googling places and haven't found anywhere yet.

It depends on how many days you want the bike for. I am sure someone will rent you a bike for a few days. If looking for a week then you maybe better of buying a used bike and selling or donating it after you leave. Do you know what size bike you ride? What dates? Once you know this I suspect someone in the local bike community will rent you one. I will send you a PM to a local facebook group.

Opportunities for shy or bold thongers in an near Fort Lauderdale. If you are worried about getting positive feedback and not scared of gay people, then join "FLoatarama". The Annual Fort Lauderdale gay flotilla. Starting midday on Saturday. You could be on one of the boats in the flotilla, or a different boat, or a paddle board, or just laying out in one of the quieter public parks along the way. Either way you will get quite a few smiles and waves. https://www.facebook.com/FLoatarama-105555358272346

Not sure where to ask this question. In a recent visit I tried avoiding expensive parking fee in Fort Lauderdale and went to haulover for convenience but I found the water there was cooler than in Fort Lauderdale. It seems counterintuitive. Today I checked Sea temperature website and found that water temperature at west palm beach is higher than Fort Lauderdale which is higher than in Miami. Is it always like this in winter?

007KWOK, here are my thoughts on the matter. 1) I suspect the source you're looking at uses satellite derived water temperatures. If this is the case these are only sea surface readings which are literally only the top millimeter of the water and may not be representative of the temperature 1-3 feet below that where we swim. The top millimeter of water is influenced a lot by local conditions (cloud cover, wind direction, water roughness, etc..) and can vary more from day-to-day than readings taken below the surface. 2) Another source you may want to consider is the NOAA water temperature site (link below). These readings are obtained by moored buoys and measure temperature I think 10 feet below the surface. Right now the water temp at West Palm and Miami are both 76.1*. A little farther south of Miami it's 76.6*. So this seems more in line of what we'd expect. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/coastal-water-temperature-guide/satl_tmap.html 3) One other possibility is that West Palm sticks out a little farther east than Miami which brings it closer to the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream and could explain why West Palm water could be a touch warmer than Miami, if this is indeed the case and not just a measurement quirk.

Lindros, Thanks for the explanation. This is interesting and kinda confirmed how I felt when I went to Haulover vs Ft Lauderdale - I was comfortable in water in Ft Lauderdale, but I felt frozen in Haulover. I guess the local conditions play a role, as you said.

Re:Fort Lauderdale, Florida ( Ft Lauderdale Beach ) FL

Date Posted:11/27/2021 05:40:19Copy HTML

lindros is accurate about this, the base water temp is about the same up and down the cost. However a couple of things that change the local temp along the shoreline: (A) Twice a day the tide flows in and out of the intercostal. When the tide flows out of the inlet the water flows North along the coast. This affects both the color of the water to the North of the inlet and to some extent the local water temp. (B) The perceived temperature of the sea is VERY dependent on the temperature of the day. If it is cold out then the sea will seem warmer, while the same temp water will be chilly on a hot day. (C) If you have been scuba diving you will have noticed the temp shift from the surface to the deeper water. Wind storms / waves stir up the water and bring colder water to the surface.

Re:Fort Lauderdale, Florida ( Ft Lauderdale Beach ) FL

Date Posted:11/27/2021 09:01:46Copy HTML

The S Fla sea temp can be effected by the winds pushing water into or out of the gulfstream but I think Haulover is most affected by the tidal currents in and out of the inlet. There can be a current running parallel to the beach from this. Seems like the out going tide would warm the sea up a little with the warmer Biscayne Bay water going out. And with the tide going in some cooler offshore water may be brought closer to the shallows of Haulover and feel colder.

I visited 18th street area of Ft Lauderdale beach this week and was definitely the odd man out wearing a thong, although I wasn't hassled about it. I was surprised at the very skimpy thongs on women up at Lauderdale by the Sea, but no guys even in Speedos. Haulover was great, no suit at all. A lot of male-female couples now share the north end with gay folks, nice to see more integration of the beach. But if I, as a solo gay guy, plopped down in the south end, I wonder if I'd be as welcome. As always, I could tell the visitors from the north. Swimming was fine for me (when water was calm enough), but most locals find it too cold.

Over President's day weekend, Sebastian looked busy and parking was a hassle so I headed up north a bit, around 18-19th street. The beach is a bit quieter up there and the afternoon sun doesn't get blocked by the hotels. On Monday there was a friendly couple from Quebec and another guy in a thong in the area. The water was bit choppy that day, but I didn't have any problems going into the water or laying out in a thong. Overall it was a good experience.

Thongs are not new to Fort Lauderdale. Here is a blip from about 1980, amusingly pictures from the curbside, looking up at the top of the jagged top wall that was only 4 foot high!
They could have just walked inside. I don't think there was a cover charge.

Judging by the beach walk video for this year's Spring Break, it looks like thongs on women make up 80% of the bikinis worn. Nice to see and a few g-strings in there too!! Not exactly crazy '80s scene but nice beach action. Miami is telling Spring Breakers go to elsewhere because of the mayhem but it is the locals who are causing the problems!

Ft Lauderdale beach is an amazing beach with great sand and great beach bars and restaurants.  The majority of woman on the beach are always in thongs, g strings, and cheeky bikinis!  There is usually a handful of guys in thongs and g strings.  Most guys would be in board shorts and speedos. Slightly north on the beach (in front of the Ritz Carlton Hotel) is considered the gay beach.  There are always guys (including myself) are wearing thongs and g strings.  This beach is great and there are plenty of woman at this beach in thongs.

Woman are not allowed to go topless, but if they do shed their tops no one seems to mind and the police and life guards don't seem to care either.  But thongs on everyone are 1000% accepted.  You will see people in thongs and g strings at the beach bars and walking up and down the board walk!

Re:Fort Lauderdale, Florida ( Ft Lauderdale Beach ) FL

60% of females are in thongs, g strings. At the gay beach / regular beach, (just that area of Ft Lauderdale beach near the Ritz Carlton Hotel) I would say out of a 100 guys 10 - 20 are in thongs, g strings or cheeky. I always bring extras to give away and convert people. Topless women is probably 5%.. cause its technically illegal, Miami South Beach topless is like 50% .. Sebastian Beach section on Ft Lauderdale beach.. Its not overly gay, with lots of straight, bi guys and lots of women. but older crowd then the spring breakers. Definitely more fun!

Any places in Fort Lauderdale or Lauderdale BTS still have bikini contests? HoJo's Lauderdale BTS used to have them on weekends - a lot of the girls were dancers and they all seemed to have boyfriends who wore thongs. Now, you hardly see any guys in thongs in Fort Lauderdale.

I just spent a weekend in Fort Lauderdale. Arrived around noon on Saturday. Stayed at Hotel Tranquilo on Vistamar a short walk from the beach. Walked north along the beach (in shorts) that afternoon up to Pelican Cove resort. Quite a few beautiful women in thongs; college aged, MILFS, even one quite advanced in age but with an amazing body who "wanted to be alone". Also walked to Sebastian beach but was not comfortable there - no women, only men that I saw. Sunday walked again to Pelican Cove resort. No men in thongs anywhere; many beautiful women in thongs. My favorite was one who took off her oversized Ohio State U t-shirt to reveal a black thong and fantastic butt. Go Buckeyes! Laid out in my Skinz g-string for a bit, but too sweaty and messy with the sand. My towel was much too small. Went back to the hotel and spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool in my g-string. No one else was there worth noting, but I had a good time and posted some selfies on my album.

Just spent time close to ritz in n. Ft lauderdale. Speedos everywhere but thongs were limited. Only myself and one other dude, otherwise a few dozen girls in thongs. No g-strings. No issue to wear a thong or g-string. Also walked around in mesh shorts with thong and no issue. Seeing girls walk the boardwalk in thongs was a sight! Cant wait to get back

Tips: leave bags at ritz carlton, and go close to sebastian beach. In a sea a speedos, only a fee thongers but we need to get out there. Loved walked around in mesh shorts and thong under, no issues whatsoever. Girls walking around on street in bikins/thongs- havent seen that in ages. Great times.

If you are there during spring break the students will be wearing the styles from Michigan or where ever they come from. They will be dressing as natives of northern states. In the old days, before new hotels and restaurants dominated the strip, there were lots of beach front shops selling towels, sun-tan lotion, short-shorts and swimsuits. So it was normal for the young women to shop for more riski attire during their stay. There were lots of store windows with both men's and women's thong swimsuits on display. Bright colors and intriguing styles was the way to get shoppers in the door, even if they ended up buying something more conservative. There was even a store run by some gay men that was stocked to the roof with speedos, men's thongs and g-strings. Only the g-strings were not on the rack but in large bins. The store later moved off the strip and into the bottom of the Marlin Beach hotel before that was demolished. The remaining beach front stores are not run by locals. They appear independent but are run by out of town operators of a particular nationality who run beach stores up and down the coast. Their ability to buy in bulk, and dubious accounting and employment practices put other stores out of business. They are also rather conservative, preferring to fly under the radar. So there really is nothing like the old beach bikini stores, with one exception, 'Splish Splash' which is on the back street near Sunrise Blvd, on the same road as the Parrot Bar. Even that has gone way down hill in the last few years, having moved from the large corner store to a tiny store. Might even be under new management.

Having thought about it, another force for bikinis that no longer exists in Fort Lauderdale is not just the beachfront bikini shops but the bars with their bikini contests. In the old days there were bars up and down the strip, The Button, Candy Store, etc. (Large bars with disco dancing, not the current restaurants.) Several times a day, especially during spring break, they would have contests, mostly bikini and wet-t-shirt. To win bikni or wet-t-shirt contests the contestants would wear tiny bright bikinis. This set the tone and standard for all. Parading in a thong or g-string was applauded, praised and rewarded. One can look back and say it was very sexist, but on the other hand it encouraged many young women to strut their stuff with confidence. A bit like when a guy gets to a beach and discovers another man is already thonging, it gave many young women the courage to buy and wear the string bikini's on sale in the beach front shops.

@JM_Runs, It sounds like Fort Lauderdale is a very thong-friendly place to visit. Do you have any recommendations for hotels, Airbnb's, etc., where a single person could stay for two to three weeks, at a minimal cost? I ask because I would be traveling alone and don't need any fancy amenities. I basically need a place to sleep after spending all day on the beach. I would also like to go to restaurants off the beaten path, where the locals dine. I am willing to travel any time of the year when it is warm enough to go to the beach. I don't mind the crowds during festival weeks, but I also don't mind traveling to Florida during the hottest months. I thank you in advance for any recommendations.

bonzo, though I haven't stayed at FtLB in the last year or two I have stayed there several times. I can tell you some observations/recommendations however I'm not you so I don't know your particulars- main things 1. Transportation (car?) 2. Budget ( $200 per night or $400 plus or less?) 3. Food expectations ( simple breakfast/lunch and mainly dinner and expectations) (I usually will eat a breakfast, skip lunch to stay on the beach then eat a larger evening meal) First to those who don't know FtLB is a barrier island off Ft Lauderdale (like a smaller Miami Beach to Miami) ( ...though it's the same "city" as FtL, MB is a separate city) That said the intracoastal waterway and bridges separate it. Now the bad news to your budget- the "residents" of the island are in $1M and up condos and $3M and up homes, so their budgets and expectations of food etc are high! They've recently build a Ritz Carlton hotel there. So for a long term stay you might consider staying on the mainland and going to the beach each day. Have a car? Parking is $4/day at Birch State Park, and a few dollars /hr at other city lots. I've stayed at some motel/hotels in the Vistamar area south of Sunrise over the years, and it's a block or two to the beach. The Fortuna, The Aqua Hotels. They are cheaper than the Ritz but not real cheap any time of the year. There are some CO gay men's hotels around there butt don't know them individually. Look at Googlemaps in the Vistamar Ave area. My "trip planning routine" involves putting in some time on 1. Geography- look at googlemaps and see the streets/proximity to beach etc 2. While on googlemaps notice the hotels and restaurants listed, including zooming in for the ones that don't pay Google megabucks to be listed first. 3. Consider other lodging opportunities - consider staying farther from the beach, maybe nearer something else for nighttime activities. Try VRBO and AirBnB for listings for a single. I like this because I can usually spot NTSDP! That's night time skinny dipping possibility! So after a day at the beach and maybe after dinner you can swim in a pool and if it's quiet enough not wear a thong! Likewise a "semiprivate" or "private" pool or deck/yard can be used on days in a thong when the beach is too windy or rain storms too frequent because you can step inside. There are a few VRBO spots for 1-2 guests in FtL which are CO (clo-op) - search google for VRBO or AirBnB , Clothing Optional, and Ft Lauderdale. For a 2 week stay they'll have better rates than a hotel. Likewise even non "CO" places won't blink at a tiny thong or I've found progressing casually from tiny suit to nearly no suit to no suit. For hotel/motel spotting one with an "adults only" policy means thongs are a go at the pool! (there's a ?Coral Reef Guesthouse I've heard of like this) Regarding time of year- yeah Summer is a lot cheaper- less demand because of hot temps but also nearly daily quick or hours long rain storms. Spring and Winter are driest, usually 0-1 rainy day a week. Regarding food I can't really recommend any restaurants as I didn't find any that I'd suggest- except Archibalds Bakery- it's won some national awards I later heard.

Bonzo68 - I have a house in Fort Lauderdale so don't have any experence with hotels. If staying " stay for two to three weeks" get a used bicycle for riding round town. Bring or get a strong lock and chain. Bicycling is a good way to get around and even if you give the bike away when you leave town you will have saved the cost on transportation. Bicycling up and down the beach will give you a good idea of who is where on the beach, which you can't really see from a car. If you are gay then look for a place to stay near sunrise Blvd or in Wilton Manors. There are a lot of over priced restaurants on the beach and along the shopping section of Las Olas Blvd, but elsewhere they become more reasonable. There are a LOT of good supermarkets that often have ready to eat food. The newer ones often tables where you can then eat the food. Places like Fresh Market or Whole Foods.

Yesterday was a fantastic day for wearing my almost a g- string thong at about 17th St. Not crowded, easier to find parking. Many years ago I heard that thongers met there. Water was amazing. When I was taking my second swim, I noticed a couple young women setting up not too far from me. I wondered just how they might react to an old guy in a thong, if at all. Later when I was back at my towel and drying off, I looked over and noticed two very lovely young shapely tanned women in side tie g-strings. Of course, not noticing me at all. I had to chuckle, the image was not totally lost on me, but when I read some of these posts, I realize that there are a lot of guys on here who would have appreciated the view more than I. Don’t overlook the quiet parts of Fort Lauderdale Beach.

---- The following is true Fort --- Lauderdale History ---
The ads were far from discreet. “FROSTED BLONDE. Great tan, hot body, very sexual, turquoise eyes, romantic & sensual, seeking generous, affluent executive male for day/evening interludes. Fun loving & hot. Enclose business card.” Plenty of men answered that 1991 ad—so many that the 33-year-old Tamarac woman who placed it, a former office manager for a stock brokerage, was raking in $2,000 a week. Then Kathy Willets’ husband fouled things up. Jeffrey Willets, 41, had previously persuaded his wife to quit her office job and become a stripper, and he had no problem with her turning to the oldest profession. When she was busy with clients in the couple’s bedroom, he would hide in the closet and peer through the slats in the door, jotting notes on a legal pad about how much clients paid, how long they stayed, and what sort of sexual kinks they exhibited. But then one client seemed to be getting a tad too close to Mrs. Willets emotionally, so her suddenly jealous husband left a threatening message on the man’s answering machine. The client called the cops to complain, and that’s how everything unraveled. You see, Jeffrey Willets was himself a cop—a Broward County sheriff’s deputy for 17 years. He’d fallen for Kathy while giving her a ticket and had left his first wife for her. Now, thanks to a vengeful john, he was arrested for making a living as a pimp, then fired. His wife was busted for prostitution. That might have been the end of it, except for the list that Jeffrey had kept on a legal pad that detailed Kathy’s clients, plus all the business cards in her Rolodex. The client list ran the gamut. One prosecutor told reporters, “You’d probably find almost every profession going, from advertising to zookeepers, with the possible exception of Buddhist monk.” Afraid the client list would be made public, several men—filing under the pseudonym John Doe—sued to keep it secret. Clever entrepreneurs peddled T-shirts saying, “I’m Not on The List.” The question of making the list public went all the way to the Florida Supreme Court, which ruled that the men gave up their privacy by participating in a criminal act. The biggest name on the list turned out to be that of Doug Danziger, Fort Lauderdale’s vice mayor. Danziger had built his political reputation on trying to close down the city’s nude bars and porn shops. Danziger denied knowing Kathy Willets but resigned his post citing “personal reasons.” It didn’t help that Jeffrey Willets had been videotaping everything. The couple hired a flamboyant attorney named Ellis Rubin who knew how to play the media like a Stradivarius. Rubin contended Kathy Willets was driven to prostitution by nymphomania. And how had this suburban housewife become a nymphomaniac? It was, Rubin said, a side effect of taking the antidepressant Prozac—the same medication that then–Gov. Lawton Chiles was taking, too, apparently with no such symptoms. Rubin said that because of Kathy Willets’ insatiable appetite, her husband frequently suffered from impotence, and thus their bordello operation was, in fact, couples therapy.< Rubin’s laughable defense attracted international notice. Kathy Willets appeared on all the tabloid TV shows and became, as the South Florida Sun-Sentinel put it, “America’s sweet tart.” She even posed for Playboy. The “nympho defense” that made them famous was never aired in a trial, though. The couple wound up pleading guilty and serving time. When they got out, they cashed in on their notoriety by going into the porn business. Willets bills herself as “Fla’s Naughty Nympho.” ------------- However by that time the damage was done. Due to bible thumping Doug Danziger all the strip bars had been banned, the racy hotdog girls moved out of town, there was a multi year crack down on Spring Break, resulting in all the dance and disco bars moving to South Beach. (The Button and Penrod's were originally in Fort Lauderdale). Fort Lauderdale's remaining claim to adult fun was a place you left, after boarding a cruise ship.

@JM_Runs, Do you think Fort Lauderdale will ever revert back to being a Spring Break mecca, with strip clubs and hotdog girls? Not everything should be in a single location like South Beach. One location should not have a monopoly on adult fun.

No, all the places on the beach front strip have turned into towering condos and hotels that cast afternoon shadows across the beach. A metaphor for the shadow cast over fun. Not only did all the dance clubs and venues on the beach strip move, but all the other ones like Confetti's and Baha Beach Club on Oakland Park Blvd vanished too. When the strip bars moved they relocated as close to Fort Lauderdale as possible, just 10 foot over the city line, in the very South East corner of Oakland Park. The city of Oakland Park needed the money and gave them twenty years. That agreement has now expired and there are now none near here, at least that I know off. You can't get the feel of the sprawling clubs and large floors in Miami. They have tinley venues at high prices. A good number of venues and nightclubs were free - you just paid for your drinks and they were not that expensive. Miami is the complete opposite.

Ft L beach seems like a relaxed thong beach for me. Since I'm driving a ways there and I want parking that's not likely to damage my car ( no parallel parking where some sh!tbox driver bangs into you) and a restroom I've found Birch State Park is a good place to "Park". It's really cheap too- if I'm alone only $4/day- if I wanted a pass even cheaper) . You park, walk thru the restaurant/bar/restroom building cross the street and you're on the city beach - so no Fl State Park thong rules out front. It's a short walk to Bonnet House beach if you turn south, butt anywhere and everywhere you'll see women in thongs and everywhere I've felt confident in the smallest micros! (no not any baggies).

I've been doing the same lately. No telling how much I have paid in parking til I thought about that.

The Circuit shuttle service provides FREE transportation in the tourist part of Fort Lauderdale. It does not cover the entire city, just the Beach zone up to Sunrise Blvd, downtown, and the connecting Las Olas blvd and shopping / resturant zone.

I am lucky that I am in the zone. Have not used the service yet but my neighbours have.

FREE, but can take longer to arrive than an Uber, so if you have an appointment start out early. (People living on the East side of town generally set out early because of frequent delays caused by trains and bridge openings.)

These days I don't often get out on the beach, but I do paddle board around the waterways several times a week.

I go several times a week. By myself, or with whomever wants to paddle that day.
Like yesterday when two friends came after work for an evening paddle.
Some weekends I put out a facebook event for a group paddle, so anywhere from a few to a dozen or so.
I have extra paddle boards to lend to friends.  If you live near or are visiting Fort Lauderdale, and want to paddle let me know.
