Date Posted:25/08/2021 01:19:54Copy HTML Are there any plans to upgrade this forum to 21st century? The notice at the bottom says "Copyright 2000", connections are not secured, passwords sent unencrypted, etc. I get warnings from all modern browsers... |

Re:Forum in/security Date Posted:25/08/2021 01:53:22Copy HTML I think the answer to your question is you get what you pay for. Look at all the other issues this provider has had over the years. Second is the issue of migrating all the posts and messages to a new forum. This may not be as easy as one might think. One sollution would be to simply start a new forum with a new company and close this one down as-is on the day the forum is closed. There is a library run forum in our are that tried this and had two issues. First they could not or at least said they could not pay the costs to open a new forum with a new company. Second, since nobody had the technical expertise to migrate the information, much of the old data was lost.
One other note -- Go to Microsoft 10 or the latest Apple programs, and many will say something like "Copyright 1985, 1987, 1988, 1993,1995, (etc.) It is not unusual for even the "big boys" to re-use old software and some of the operating system experts think this could be improved on, and many of the issues of for example Microsoft 10 are partly due to the continuous patching and reworking, but never fully rewriting of old code.
I agree with the need to update the forum software and bring it into the 21st century, but only if older posts (some going back to 2005 or so) are preserved and only if the service can remain free for those who don't want to pay.
I would suggest if you have any knowledge or how this can be done, to let JM know. I know he is just as frustrted as many of the rest of us with dealing with the issues of this older forum company. |
