I spend one long weekend each summer taking advantage of the wonderful, and thong friendly, beaches in southeastern Georgia. I usually spend one day at Cumberland Island, which is discussed elsewhere, and two or three days at Jekyll Island.

Jekyll is owned by the State of Georgia, which leases sites to the private and commercial home and building owners on the island. There are golf courses, the historic millionaires' homes,a rock festival at the pavilion on the beach in August, and several on-the-beach motels such as Day's Inn, Holiday Inn, etc.

The Beach is easily 75 yards or more wide at low tide and 20 yards or so wide at high tide. Shelling can be very good, especially at tide low enough to expose the mud bottom offshore. That mud bottom is the biggest problem, and leads to marginal water quality. I do not recommend wearing a white suit.

The motels on the island are somewhat pricey, so I stay in Brrunswick at I-95, exit 32, where there are several reasonably priced places to stay.

The ride to St Mary's to catch the Park Service Ferry to Cumberland takes about 40 minutes. The ride to the causeway to Jeckyll through Brunswick is about 25 minutes. Going down I-95 to the next exit and then on 17 to the causeway is a bit further, but takes about the same amount of time. By the way, there are some very good BBQ places around Brunswick. I recommend Mac's which is on 17 near the causeway to St. Simons Island, (which is north of Jekyll and has very limited public beach areas.)

The causeway is about 8 miles to the bridge to the island. Right after you cross the bridge, you have to pay a "parking fee" which was $4.00 per day, but may have gone up. You can buy a three day pass, or a season pass also. The one-day fee allows you one return to the island. The rules are stated on the pass.

After paying the fee continue straight until you reach the pavilion, then go right for three or four miles, past a water tower on the right, to the soccer field parking lot on the left.

There is a long boardwalk to the beach. If you are going to need it on the beach, carry it with you. There are no concessions on the beach, except at the hotels which will be 1.5 to 2 miles north of you.

Once you get to the beach turn left and head north on the beach for about a half mile. It seems that family groups that use this part of the beach either stay very near the boardwalk, or go a bit south.

This area is known as the south dunes. The dunes are high, extensive, and fun to explore. I have been there on the 4th of July weekend, with large crowds by the motels, and virtually no one, except for the occasional beach walkers and bike riders venturing this far down the beach.

Pick a spot above the high tide level, but not in the dunes. (the authorities are far more sensitive about the dunes and the turtle nests then they are about what you wear).  Apply the sun screen, and thong away.

Over the years of doing this, I have had any number of people wave or say hello as they walked or rode by and even some stop to speak, but I have never had a problem with anybody, including those with pick-up lines. I have found a friendly "no thank you" and a "have a nice day" work just fine on Jekyll. On the other hand, if you are looking to meet someone, you may have the opportunity to do so. You may see one or two other male thongers or bikini wears, but then again, you may be the only one there.

You will see the beach patrol in a truck, the turtle patrol on a Gator, usually pulling a trailer, and cops on three wheelers, but none of them have given me any trouble, even when I was standing or walking around with my thong on.  Also, net casters will go up and down the beach, but again, no problems.

I do remember one time when a bike rider made a remark about me, but his wife/girl friend told him to mind his own business and leave other people alone. The only time I have ever seen anyone hassled is for being in the dunes.

There is lots of room to walk around, shell, and explore.  I stay at least a half mile away from the motel crowd to the north, and about a quarter of a mile away form the family groups, if any, to the south. Or I go anywhere I want to by pulling a bikini on over my thong.

By about 4 in the afternoon, I own the beach. I am the only one out there. I usually get my spot at about 7 am and stay until 7 pm. For me, these are the best three or four days of the year.Jekyll is great.  The authorities don't bother you as long as you don't make a problem out of yourself. Try it out. It is a great place for thonging.

My wife and I have been to Jekyll Island about 2 years ago. We went behind the soccer fields and turned left. We were in thongs the whole time and she was also topless. Probably could have gotten away nude but didnt want to push our luck. We plan to go again. Would have sooner but have been goung other places like Apollo Beach, Haulover, The Keys. Plus we have Folly Beach  only 45 minutes from our house

I just got back from Jekyll. I can't believe that I have lived in the area for twenty-five years and never been to that part of the beach. I usually walk on Saint Simons beach where I have never seen a man in a thong and only a few women.

Today, for all intents and purposes, I was the only one on the beach. During the hour or so I was there, I saw maybe six people.  No one seemed to care that I was wearing a thong. For part of the time, when no one was in sight, I was walking and swimming nude. I will definitely go back. Kind of lonely, though. When my wife comes back from her trip, I'll get her to go with me.

O.K. since this thread is here and my other one got deleted, has anyone got any NEW news on this area?  BTW, I don't understand how Tampa (where I used to live) Ft. Desoto, and such have so many threads, but you JM) only allow one thread for other places.  It gets a bit annoying.  When I use the "search tool" I get no help, and I don't want to go through every post to find an answer.  Maybe, if space is an issue delete things that are really old... just a suggestion.  I appreciate the forum, but I would love it if it were a bit more user friendly.

A) You misspelled Jekyll in your other post, so it would not have helped other people to find it. (Not that I should lecture others on spelling, mine is the worst, but it does help if the beach name is spelled correctly.)

B)  The point of the beach report threads is to provide information to others. Your new post just asked if "anyone knew anything" about Jekyll Island.  Since there was a very good thread here with a lot of very good information, I deleted you new question and sent you a polite PM with a link to this thread.  As you see this thread has a very long and detailed beach report from a member called meinph. (Good job there)

When you reply to an existing thread instead of creating a new one, it saves the person re-typing their beach report all over again just becuase you did not want to use the search tool to find the original. The search tool does not bring up every answer that you have to go through:  A search on Jekyll Island only produces one answer, this thread.

The point of trying to keep discussions about a location all in one place is so that people don't have to constantly repeat themselves every time someone asks "Anyone know anything".

If you read an existing thread from the top down, before posting a question as a reply, you will already know what questions have been asked and what questions have been answered. This may result in you asking a more nuanced question which in turn may help you get a more useful reply.

Not much to update about Jekyll.  I spent my weekend there last August, the same weekend of the Rock Festival.  Attendance was down and there were very few people on the beach.  The old motels have been torn down and new ones are being built, which might of accounted somewhat for the lack of people on the festival and on the beach.  I seem to recall that the daily parking fee has gone up, but I usually buy the three day pass, and a $ or two more for parking doesn't bother me a bit.   In addition to parking at the soccer field, there is some parking ( for 6 or 7 vehicles at the most) across the road from the water tower.  The walk to the beach is shorter, but there are no designated spots, and the parking is right off the road.  I like the soccer field lot better because it seems to be safer and more secure.  Returning to my car to find that it had been clobbered or broken into would not be much fun at all.

Friday morning I was out at about 6:45 am and was able to get an update concerning the number of nests, etc from the turtle patrol.  They are reluctant to share information at first, but if they get the impression that your interest is out of concern for the turtles, they can be very informative, pointing out where the different species nest, the location of nests that are about hatch, etc.  A couple of years ago, I went back out a bit before midnight  to a nest they had pointed out and was able to watch the newly hatched turtles make their run for life.  It was breathtaking, to say the least.

I spent all day Friday and Sunday (went to Cumberland on Saturday) at Jekyll.  Picked up lots of shells (sand dollars and knobed whelks mostly,  no olives at all which is a disappointment because the coloring of the Jekyll olives is a deep green with brown and tan accents, quite beautiful), talked to several people, explored the dunes, and completely enjoyed both days, every minute in a string thong.  Life is wonderful, and days spent thonging on the beach are a great part of it.

There were no other thongers on the beach those two days.  In the past I have seen another thonger on Sunday afternoon, but he seems to want to be left alone, and other than saying hello when we pass, I haven't talked to him.  I value my own privacy and space on the beach and try my best to respect others' desire for the same.

An hour or so  before I left late Sunday afternoon a young couple walked down the beach and set up 30 yards or so away from me.  I was coming back from a walk and when went I past them, they asked me about the clothing rules on the beach and I told them that there didn't seem to be any. They both got nude, which was how they were when I packed up and left.

As I said before, Jekyll is a great beach and a great place for thonging.  Try it out and see for yourself.

I was there this past weekend wearing a Muscleskins Athletic back bikini. While lying there, this old guy walked up to me, away from his wife that was still near the water line and told me I needed to put on some clothes. I do not look bad in my suit. Look at my profile and you will see me in the suit at Jekyll Island. I was on the South side of the island where there generally aren't many people.

I thonged for a few days at the south end of Jekyll Island back in 2002. It seemed totally fine with the folks around me on the beach.

IotTheta, I hope you stood up for yourself and told that old guy where to go with his opinion.

It is anoying when others take time to deliberately annoy you.  I used to feel very uncomfortable when this happned, and still do to some extent, but now have developed the ability to just say "Thank you for your opinion, goodby." Then I ignore them.  At witch point they generally toddle off.

If they are close and talking in a normal voice sometimes they pause for a response after stating their objection.  As non-sarcastically and honistly as I can, I say "Thanks for your opinion."  Most of the time that ends it.

On rare occasions I was thinking fast enough, (not common) and came back with a quick reply.  Often the person complaining is way over dressed for the beach, so I might reply "So you think jeans are approprate for swiming?" or if they have been rude and shouting I might say "Thanks, now go back to Kansas."  Most of the time I am taken by surprise and so have not the wits for a smart remark.

If the person is shouting from a distance I normally just ignore them. Sometimes it is effective to smile and give them a wave of recognition. Their friends then tease them about their gay friend.

I think the key is to show, (a) no fear (b) no change in behavior. If you show fear or change your behavior they feel they are winning and will keep piling on if they can. Especilly true with teenage boys. Show No Fear.

If the person is overweight or out of shape you can turn the table and say "and I think you need to lose 30 pounds".

Wow, I'm gob smacked that people will not mind there own business. I guess I was lucky the one time I did lay on a beach in the USA, (Clearwater), in a string side Tanga bikini no one batted an eyelid. In all my years of wearing skimpy swimwear in many countries, (admittedly mostly European), I have never heard a single remark!

I think all of us that don't live in Europe, Florida or California have had to put up with rude comments more often than we would like.  One line I have found to be effective (assuming the person is not yelling and screaming from a distance, or commentingh behind your back) is to turn their comment around and say, "Oh, does that mean that I also get to tell you what you may or may not wear?" (making sure that it sounds like a question and not a statement).  Since the complainer is most often a guy in dork shorts or a woman in a full-coverage one piece, they are usually so put off by the thought that I might suggest that they wear anything less that they disappear pretty fast.  One time a teenage boy in a group complained and the girls picked up on my comment and started suggesting he should wear a thong.  That was great fun.

once i was at assateague(quite a few nudists and thongers there)it was early in the tanning season so to prevent the "tool"from getting burned i was wearing a pouch that has no sides or back,,it just fits over the goods and has a string to wrap around the goods to keep it in place(i think its called a "baggie").laying there minding my own business, about 40 nudists and thongers in my area,by the way..when im thonging the only people i cover myself for are people with kids(most of my suits leave little to the imagination).like i was saying...laying there minding my own business when the couple next to me said uhh-ohh here comes prude mike and told me if i didnt cover up he would confront me...i said good..i hope he does and laughed.i looked around and most everyone(including the thongers)had covered up but not me...hell no..not for a prude!as he walked by everyone he would check them out(thoroughly)he didnt stop to anyone he just kept walking up the beach until he got to me...when he looked my way he stared and shook his head, turned and came strait to me.he stopped about 10 feet from me..by this time i was standing because of the way he turned and walked to me i thought he might kick me or something and everyone else seemed to be scared of him...lol.when he stopped he yelled "put some damn clothes on..this isnt a nude beach".and the i yelled(even louder)"i do have something on".then he yelled"no,thats not chothing youre naked".then i yelled "no,this is naked" and grabbed my baggie and pulled it off and the i yelled "now..do you want to get your ass kicked by a naked man?"he turned and walked away...as he left i was so mad i made another comment(i shouldnt have said this but i did)..i yelled "tomorrow bring your wife with you and i'll get it hard...by the way you look(very overweight and at least 60)its been a long time since shes seen one hard".im not proud of that comment but being so pissed off i just didnt stop and think.that happened 5 or 6 years ago and i have never seen him there since.that day i was the most popular guy on the beach...people were coming up to me shaking my hand saying nice comeback...even had the wife in a swinger couple to ask me if id walk back in the dunes with her so she could reward me "properly".....lol.i am an exhibitionist but never do anything to offend others and i dont want prudes to offend me...he was an old guy...my sunning preferences is none of his business!

Reviving from the dead, visiting in September and really just curious of the vibe. I usually don’t thong around young kids and I’m staying more south but at a Marriott hotel. Wonder how many people bike in thong on all the trails haha

Well if anyone wants to know, the southern portion around the water tower (after the Hampton inn and before glory beach) has been great. Walkers and bikers maybe a couple an hour. Stayed at the Marriott and walked down, about a mile but flat easy walking beach. Finding sand dollars and tanning has been great!
