Swimwear manufacturers have different approaches when it comes to coverage. There's some that indicate the material is unlined, or can be transparent when wet. Most companies have lining to where you're unable to tell when looking whether or not the person wearing it is cut or not. These suits are acceptable at just about any public place to swim.

I used to be horrified if I bought a swim brief and my "bulge within a bulge" was visible, but now that I have a nicer looking physique, I prefer wearing swim attire that doesn't hide what I look like downstairs.

I never really let it bother me knowing that my member was visible through the fabric. But I do remember one time when I was in Europe and I was walking to the water to get cooled off and I was wearing a very thin sheer mesh fabric G-string that was very form fitting. As I walked through the crowd of sunbathers I noticed a woman looking at me and smiled and said to her friend that “I didn’t look like I was from around here, in English”

Later when I was walking back to my blanket I noticed that she was looking again and smiling. As I walked by I just smiled and said “I’m not from here, what gave it away?” Then she said without any reservations “I can see that you are circumcised and you don’t look Jewish!”

I have never been concerned about what is visible. I don’t even think about it. The vast majority of my swim thongs are not lined and I’ve rarely had anyone notice. The only times I’ve had anyone say something was when I was wearing a yellow thong and coming out of the water. “You know I can pretty much see everything. Your suit is like a second skin and a little bit see through.” I was told by a woman with a big smile and a twinkle in her eyes. That turned into a great day with her.

I have never had a problem with semi sheer suits here in South Florida.

I have a variety of thongs and g-strings, all are unlined. The light colored ones, especially the ones with thin fabric are somewhat sheer when wet. I really don't worry about it. But I will consider where I am and who might be around, if I have on a thong or g-string that shows. Not that I am ashamed or embarrassed for anyone to see me, It's just I live in a conservative area and really don't want a naked man report.
I like being able to wear just a g-string and don't want to jeopardize it. This week while it is cold, I have been making some new g-strings for this summer. Basically pouches held on by 2.5 mm elastic strings. They will stay on without back straps, but I will add rear elastic strings if I plan on swimming in them to secure them and keep them in place. I wish I lived in an area where I could wear the new g-strings on my SUP.

Another thing that happened was, I was living in Hawaii on Oahu and my wife and I would go to the same beach most weekends. So after a few weeks we got to know the other regulars at the somewhat quiet locals beach. We found this beach because it was known to be thong friendly and occasionally had people sunbathing nude. So we felt comfortable wearing some of our most minimal G-strings though most of the others were wearing more conservative thongs, but this was not an issue. Eventually some of the other women joined my wife going topless and another woman also trimmed her bikini selection down to a G-string.

So after a while the group who we regularly saw asked if we would like to join them on the beach as we were going to our regular spot. So we joined their group and it varied from 2-4 couples depending on the day and this day it was 4 couples. We were younger than the rest by about 15-20 years but they were friendly and being with a larger group was always safer. The conversation turned to our choice in swimsuits, especially about the fact that we both were wearing very sheer G-strings, almost transparent even when completely dry. Nothing negative was said. They were just curious that we were both completely comfortable walking the beach and in the water while knowing that anyone could see just about everything. They were surprised that my wife went topless and didn’t cover up when going to the parking lot, when people driving by the lot could see her. We just said it was not illegal and most people didn’t do or say anything and we didn’t worry about it. They continued the  conversation with a few of the women asking where we bought them, etc.
Flash forward a few weeks. When arriving we noticed that two of the women were now wearing similar G-strings to my wife, Microminimus from WW and their husbands were also wearing much smaller coverage thongs that were semi sheer.

When we commented on their new swimsuits they smiled and said that “we got something for you two as well.” One lady reached into her beach bag and pulled out a small bag. From it she pulled out a black single string for my wife and a Bunn-G for me!  They said it was just meant as a joke and we didn’t have to wear them if we didn’t want to. Being good sports we decided to wear them anyway. Without hesitation we took off G-strings and tried on our new gifts. We surprised them more than they surprised us!  I think they were even more surprised when we wore them as we continued our normal activities walking around on the beach.

Always lined in front. I like my thongs to be about the back.

Always unlined for bikinis, thongs, and strings.  It not about revealing details, it about minimal, lightweight, and fast drying. I wish there were more CO beaches so there would not be the chance of offending the textile obsessed.

That’s the beauty of this. We have options and you can decide on what you like best. Personally I keep a range in my collection and it all depends on the setting as to what I wear. I’ll say I generally like unlined just due to the suit feeling that much less restrictive. That being said I still have plenty of lined suits.

I loved lined, even when I order a teardrop g string from skinz I get the front liner. gives the suit more structure and lets me wear it everywhere confidently

About 99% of my suits are one layer- unlined. Years ago I noticed that thin unlined fabric - especially shiny fabric- followed my contours the most. You know how I have an acronym for everything- years ago I called them SIC suits (See I'm Circumcised). From years of wearing varying degrees of revealing suits I've found the factors are : cling - when wet, when dry, + Look thru- transparency to the sun butt not to the eyes unless you stare I've used the INSANE score when I assess whether I can wear a suit at a venue. (I Now See Anatomy Nearly Exposed) expressed in feet away you can see anything. INSANE 3 is safe mesh , INSANE 100 is wide fishnet only for CO places. However some thin fabric when wet clings like paint so becomes INSANE 50!

Always lined in front, with thick fabrics. IMAO : - I like my thongs to be about the back. - I like having support at the front - see through, mesh, etc. are illegal in my country. So, an unlined front thong is illegal if it is transparent when wet. - form fitting could be considered indecent and so illegal. - wearing a thong is already difficult enough for men. There is no need to increase the difficulty or search for problems

Only one of my thongs is lined and it doesn’t get much wear. My other thongs are a range from thick fabric to thin and some printed mesh. What I wear is based on where I am. Most times if I have concerns that a ticker fabric won’t solve it’s likely also a context that I also wouldn’t be comfortable in a thong. I also have a range of briefs in thick to thin fabric some with the liner removed to show a little more shape and jiggle. I enjoy the lightness of an unlined suit and the thinner fabrics but I recognise they aren’t for every situation. However most people don’t look and those who do notice typically don’t mind showing that they are looking, same as wearing a small suit anyway.

My regular swimwear J Snyder Capri & Kini are unlined but I take care to ensure nothing obvious. Particularly important when material gets thinner through wear. I reckon to do nothing to draw attention.

Definitely unlined for me - lighter, dries quicker and gives better definition

I prefer unlined suits - thongs, bikinis, g-strings, speedos and shorts. However, only some of mine are sheer or see-through. Some fabrics cover plenty with just one layer. I decide what I wear depending on where I plan to be. I love the rare occasion that I see ladies wearing sheer or unlined suits at the beach.

Always thought lined swimwear was norm. With likes of dork shorts having netting to hold the equipment sort of inside without flopping out to be exposed. Wearing brief swimwear they also had liners in the front. Some had built in c-rings. Purchased size too small speedo boxer brief, which had thick sponge yellow liner. Found after hour in the pool and went to change witness i never had happen was everything shrunk or impaled inside my body frightened looking at myself in change room. Believe constriction upon equipment with layers of fabric make everything moist and damp. Fabric liner never fully dried. Therefore keeping everything humid and wet not comfortable feeling. Choosing thongs many if not most have no liners associated. Although various degrees of fabric thickness and color can compensate as no difference to be revealing as lined counterpart. More thongs styles i purchased i noticed print patterns such as camo, makes for less revealing therefore no liner is needed. Wearing nylon short shorts i began to experiment cutting liner out. Achieving cooler comfortable feel when complimented with snug thong. Only problems occurred when wearing laser thongs under unlined shorts. Someone mentioned that they could see all my bits and pieces exposed. Testicle has the knack to pop out not able to feel it being exposed. Unlike wearing constrictive tight thong keeping things in place. Or very least pinching to signal their maybe exposure present. Do enjoy the revealing nature wearing unlined shorts either plain lighter color fabrics or print dark camo. As exhibitionist enjoy outline it makes when going thongless revealing to those that are intrigued. Yet there is time and place for many styles to wear unlined paired with thong.
Only time i got into trouble wearing lined light  blue, faded  out brief. Swimming on my back gal associate watched me closely as she was giving lessons to older bloke. Only days later she was visibly upset, stark silent stare,  with my choice of swimwear revealing everything. She later called me out  in public that i like to show off “his penis”.  The shaming didn’t make sense since i was dressed completely. Nonetheless gal had been upset carry in her mind for days to say something.
Never seen gal ever again only to be shamed. Five years later she ogling me on the nude beach all afternoon with her female friend.
Once  packed up leaving  the beach. She caught up to me complimenting my nude body. Little did she know i was same dude she complained about years ago in sheer lined faded  brief swimming.

All of my thongs and bikinis are unlined. Just feels better (lighter) and dries faster. Most of my thongs have thin fabric, feels your are wearing next to nothing. I like that feeling.

Good point on the feeling! My unlined suits slightly less than the mesh suits let me feel the sea breezes "the way God intended"- right between the legs! Seriously feeling the warmth of the sun then the breeze just adds to the sensations! A lot of us wear thongs to feel this on our bottoms- and these extend that "up front"

You probably don’t know but under that top there are nipples, under that bottom, labia for the ladies and a penis and testicles for the men. Surprised? You shouldn’t be, that’s how God made us, and since Adam and Eve we’ve been trying to hide the shame of disobeying God and eating from the forbidden fruit, …so they made aprons. Skirts. Clothes. (Metaphor) Deal with it, it’s the human body and we all have one, nothing to be ashamed about…..unless you purposefully neglect it. Besides, you have to look pretty hard to see the outline of my boys showing through my unlined thong! (Quit looking so hard Karen!)

That's my philosophy too! At the beach I look around and think- Who here doesn't know what's between my legs, who doesn't know what's barely covered in this suit?? If their attitude is "well I don't want to see that" then I say "don't look". I can say "well I don't want to see someone's overhanging gut or bulbous body too" so I won't look!!

No lining for me! I prefer the “ice silk” material, which is elastane, 4-way stretch. I don’t wear white, for obvious reasons but anything with color is adequate and still looks like it’s been sprayed on. I agree strongly with the notion that the body underneath is something that should just be accepted. I would prefer to be nude, and this is my compromise. There have been some printed patterns lately that got me ordering again and I really like them. Some sellers on eBay have located goods in the USA, so no obvious tariff surcharges and shipping is low. Now that tariffs are illegal, it will be interesting to watch the prices.

In my speedo days many years ago the lining panel was very thin as was the suit material. Nothing see-through, but getting up out of the water, the suit pretty much showed you to the world. There was a time when this was completely normal at pools, but since it embarrassed me and my friends we took to wearing swimmer jocks to hide the details. But that had problems too because the leg straps were visible, and the waist strap would slide up out of the suit. So we didn't show our package, but showed we were wearing jocks.

Once a girl asked me why I had to wear a Speedo. I explained it was fast drying and low resistance in the water (didn't mention the show-off aspect). She then asked me why I had to wear a jock. I explained frankly it was to hide the details.
She said I shouldn't worry about that, and that the jock straps were more visible all the time and looked much worse. That's when I finally gave up worrying about a visible package details. Never wore the jock again, and most of my suits are unlined.

Funny, the "competition" speedo style suits I use for lap swimming (they are made by Sporti) at a pool where I work out are actually lined, but they're the only ones that are. I bought a couple of tanga bikinis from Kiniki, most were unlined, but some had lining, which I just snipped out. That improved the fit and comfort too. The oldest one is a dark blue and didn't need any lining. The red and white ones become very transparent when wet though. But I don't swim with them at public pools, so it doesn't matter.
All my thongs are unlined. I always specify unlined when I'm custom ordering.
