I have been to this beautiful island 3 times over the last 4 years & every time I've stayed here I've been amazed by the vibe of this small island over the summer period. I have quite comfortably worn my thong on most of the beaches we went to & took a long walk with my girlfriend, her being topless & me in a thong with both of us feeling totally comfortable even when passing a load of people walking on the same path as us. You can quite happily walk down to the water & go for a swim wearing as much or as little(or nothing) as you like & feel 100% comfortable. It's a great little island to visit & you will enjoy the beaches however you decide to dress on them! |

Seems like several of the beaches are truly "whatever" where you see families next to thong and topless and a few nudes mixed in...hey she just slipped out of her suit, wasn't he wearing a thong a while ago.... see nude couples strolling ... |

I wore a g- string on the beach all the time, there were two more men in thongs. My partner wore the smallest g string she has ever worn, and we could go to the bar at the back of the beach without covering up. The Beaches were busy but tolerant of any kind of swimwear. Thongs will always be in the minority but that does not matter just enjoy wearing what you want, and let everyone else see you wearing it with confidence.

Mind you it's worth every cent, and this when I return in September, it will be my 11th consequetive year in going to the same place on Formentera, which I think is saying something for the alure of the place, simply brilliant ! Good luck on your search for a decent place to stay.

I stay in "ES Pujols" which has the most accomodation on the whole island. I know for a fact that my contact for where I stay is fully booked and therefore it is not worth you pursuing in getting a room there. I can only point you in the direction of the internet and do some searching there to get you a place to stay. I don't think it will be easy, but I'm sure you are up for a challenge.

I wore thongs on every beach in Menorca, Barcelona and Sitges with no problems at all. Had a great time as did the wife. Barcelona beaches felt like South Beach as far as the fashion and vibe.

S'Amarador: #easy to get to by car (signs for beach near Santanyi). Not sure how easy otherwise.#parking €5 for the day.#reasonably short beach but quite deep (sea to back of beach).#sand is clean, although there was quite a lot of seaweed at the water's edge on the left hand side. Water clear after a couple of feet though.#saw a couple of teenage girls (18/19) wearing thongs. I didn't but the left hand side of the beach might be ok as it was reasinably empty. Es Trenc:#a reasonable journey by car and you should look up the route if driving.#park alongside the road under the trees before the paid carpark - no need to pay €6 to get in there.#beach is very long and wide. The sand has some bits and pieces of vegetation but not trash, etc.#plenty of people going naked around me and a young woman (20ish) walked by in a thong. Felt perfectly comfortable in a thong. Colonia Sant Jordi (beach to left of main beach):#very easy to get to and restaurants, etc. nearby.#short beach, reasonably wide. Sand is very clean.#saw a very attractive Russian woman (early-mid 20s) wearing a thong. Wore mine at just at the start of the beach. Not sure I felt that comfortable as a man but no comments. Es Caragol:#a bit out of the way and not signposted so a map/sat nav is a must.#once parked it's a 25-30 min walk to the beach.#beach is fairly long and reasonably wide. Sand is mostly clean apart from vegetation (bits of seaweed, etc.). Water is clear, calm and quite shallow.#clothed and non-clothed mixed together along the beach. I felt perfectly fine in a thong and returned more than once as this was my favourite location. Saw a few women in thongs. Cala Varques:#need a map/sat nav to get to. A reasonably long rocky road at the very end makes for slow going!#once parked there's a 10-15 walk through the woods to get to the beach.#beach is fairly short but quite deep. Sand is perfect and the water is crystal clear and calm.#a few nude people on the beach, plus a couple of very attractive ladies with thongs (one walked down to the beach in just her thong!). I didn't thong but wish I would have - the beach is very chilled and laid back, so another great location. Just to note as I haven't bothered above, toplessness is pretty much commonplace so no problems from that point of view for the ladies. Also went to the beach in Santanyi. Wouldn't wear a thong as a guy but a cool beach, and saw a couple a ladies in thongs. |

So I'm happy report that thongs for girls are definitely IN . On the beaches I visited more than half were in thongs and topless is very popular too.For the guys though I only saw a few and they were being worn by the promo boys for a night club. Having said that square cut Speedo style trunks are in - again I say 50%+ of the trendy young Mediterranean guys in themMany beaches here are clothing optional so I can't thonging being a problem in either modesty or fashion sense!As for me - I'd packed a nice selection but ended up only wearing my second smallest g string with no top as I found I could beach walk and visit a beach bar with no more than a smile. On several occasions other women asked me where I'd bought my string as they also wanted to get as close to an all over tan without being naked.

Guys would always say it is easier for girls, but I know it takes some courage to lose the top and go minimal on the bottoms.

NO - Don't stuff your thong. Just get one that fits correctly, that suits you, and is not too tight. How do you know if it is too tight? Look in the mirror, does it cause a grove in your skin? Too tight. Then wear it for a while, then take it off. If there is an impression left on your skin it was way too tight. |

i recommend the northern part of the island, past the last restaurant. keep walking until you find a nice spot without too many people. at low tide you can walk to the smaller island further north. but you can thong anywhere and on any beach. i stayed in budget accommodation that was excellent, as i don't care for pools. |

Was in Alcúdia, north part of the island, and it was beautiful. Bright blue water, nice breeze, and plenty of sun for my buns. I was the only male in a thong. Many women were, as well as topless. No one cared. Wish more men were bold and went for it. Hoping for another thong day tomorrow.

I spent much of the last year on Mallorca. It is difficult to explain to Americans how laid back things are. It is normal for women to wear thongs. It is normal for older women to still wear bikinis and go topless, even into their 80's. Unlike North Americans who seem to think they need one piece swimsuits after they turn 35.
Culturally people sit closer in restaurants and on the beaches. Enjoying their friends while unperturbed by the naked kids running in and around. About the only thing that annoys people is people playing music or kicking a ball around when their is not enough space on a crowded beach. There is a bit of difference when the beach population is mostly locals compared to tourists, who come from northern climates with more conservative swimsuits and attitudes. Many, if not most, Spanish families live in little apartments (flats) in multi-story buildings. Standard address forms ask for the street and building number, and then the floor and door number. As a result they are accustom to sharing common spaces and noise. So they get on with their lives and leave others to their own. In more than a year of thonging the ONLY people who gave disapproving looks and the ONLY person who said something were from the UK. The old "what about the children" trope from a man who each summer brings his family down to one of the appartments in our building. He sets up on the pool deck directly below our window and is obnoxiously loud in an obliviously unaware Northam England sort of way. Meanwhile, on the beach below the pool deck around half the kids under six are running round naked. And we get a LOT of kids. On school days the kid invasion does not happen until about 4PM on school days. So mornings start with retires exercising and the young ladies tanning topless before they go off to their restaurant/tourist jobs. (We are right by Puerto Portals). Later the tourists come out, but they tend to pack-up when the after school kid invasion takes over our smaller beach. Weekends we get local families with umbrellas, folding chairs and more kids. On sunny days in the summer it is difficult to walk between the groups. Each tend to keep to their own group and turn a blind eye to the chaos around. Like anywhere, men will notice when a stunning women saunters down the beach. Similarly women will smile as I walk past. But unless introduced everyone mostly keeps to themselves. Maybe because our's is seen as a family beach rather than a teen and twenties show off and strutting beach. Unlike somewhere like Alcudia or Palma Nova there is no 'action' here: No beach bar, no volleyball courts, no promenade to saunter down. Even so nobody, other than the Englishman who comes in the summer, has any issue with my wearing a thong. The more you get away from tourists the less you are going to get a dirty look or have anyone say anything about a guy wearing a thong, even if there are hoards of little kids around. By being brave about thoning on Mallorca I have been befriended by a few good looking young women. I think it helps social acceptance if now and again one is seen to be hanging out with a good looking women. I don't keep a phone about me, but 'A' who comes on Sundays likes to take lots of pictures. I have put a few of her and I paddle boarding in Mallorca on my Flickr page. She goes topless on the beach and when out paddle boarding, but puts on a top for photos because 'internet', and facebook dings you if nipples appear in pictures. https://flic.kr/ps/7zwt8 |
