Date Posted:06/17/2004 04:25:11Copy HTML As far as I know (and have been told, although some time ago) nudity in public on the continent isNOTillegal so you can strip off as much as you like when tanning, the fact that many people wear swimming costumes and cover up is purely because the trend of the british and american mentality that nudity is seen as something sexual (naughty) and they chose to cover up. Also I think that the british/american influence on the continet has affected the natives of each country by "forcing" them to abide with our "ettiquette". In my opinion I think if the tourist places in europe were not tourist places they would be much more relaxed about nudity and nakedness. If you look at any non-tourist place on the continent (take Germany for example) the non-tourist places there are very open about their nudity and thus having communal naked swimming pools, saunas etc. (yes I have experienced these as I worked there for 6 months)If the laws of the countries have changed please could you let me know, but so summarise, I am still under the impression that nudity in public in europe (or at least germany and spain) isNOTillegal

Re:Nudity Laws of Europe Date Posted:06/17/2004 11:53:06Copy HTML As far as I know, in most countries of continental Europe there are laws regarding nudity in public. Depending on the various countries, the laws may vary in rigidity.
In Germany and the Scandinavian countries, there is a long tradition with nude recreation. For instance, swimming pools have special hours for naked swimming. There large stretches of beach open to nudism, also in parks and sometimes even in parks in the cities. But otherwise you have to be decently dressed in public. The countries around the Mediterranee (France not included) have more restrictions. They have later changed their laws and rules under the pressure of tourism. First topless was allowed at some places, later nudity came in. On the beaches the clothing optional parts are marked clearly with signs. Also around some lakes and rivers is nudity allowed. Beside this, if you are a member of a naturist club, you may go to private locations all over Europe. I think there is not much difference between the laws in the UK and the continent. Only on the continent we have more opportunities to be naked in public. If you want to know the locations for nude recreation, surf on the internet and you will be flooded with information. In a week I will go to the beaches of North-West France and I have collected all nude beaches in that area. Mostly I will be in thong but I will also enjoy the pleasure of being naked. |

Re:Nudity Laws of Europe Date Posted:07/21/2004 05:40:02Copy HTML There is a very old law here in Greece that dictates that every woman above 9 years of age should have her breasts covered. However, this law has been rendered practically inactive on beaches, because, the few times when some cop who had FAR too much time on his hands tried to enforce it, the public had him for breakfast, after making a laughing stock out of him. Imagine being in a country where no one bothers about this specific law for at least 20+ years and then having some idiot cop arresting a 12-year old girl for not wearing a top on the beach. Now, I think this cop has been transferred somewhere in Northern Greece, on the border with Turkey, counting the flamingos of the Evros river... Of course, any woman that wants to, can go topless on the beach, even in front of police or coast guard staff and no one will tell her a single thing. Nudism is still in a kind of legal limbo, but the fact is there are nudist beaches (although these are targeted by "entrepreneurs" who want to wreck the whole thing with illegally-built taverns and beach bars and have the local clergy try to raise the more conservative, and useless, element of the local society against the nudists), as well as big beaches where you can walk away from the crowd and just take everything off. The new tourism minister has expressed his opinion on nudism and is certainly not against it. So, maybe we'll finally see the removal of some obsolete laws that no one obeys and no one bothers to uphold. |

Re:Nudity Laws of Europe Date Posted:05/28/2007 10:06:47Copy HTML In Holland we are very liberal in the field of naked recreation. And in the Scandinavian countries they are even more liberal. In Holland there is just one law that covers naked recreation. Below is the original Dutch text and my translation.
Criminal Code, Book 3, Title 2 He who is outside a place allocated by the city council as suited for not-dressed public recreation, being not-dressed at or near a place allocated to public intercourse being unsuited for not-dressed recreation, will be punished with a fine of the first category. This translation is by me and being not an official translator nor having had any legal schooling, the translation is also without any garantee of legal correctness. It means that you can be naked everywhere unless you are at or near a place where the general public has access like public roads or buildings AND that place is unsuited for un-dressed recreation. There are also laws covering decency at public places but the police will only act if somebody is complaining and even then they are not very enthousiastic to act anyway. It also depends on the religious attitude of the environment. We have in Holland also a Bible-belt and if a girl is walking around there in hotpants and a semi-see-through top, she could be advised to cover-up if somebody had a complaint. But no further action. A fine of the first category is at this moment an amount between EUR 2,00 (minimal amount of any fine) and EUR 225,00. So if you walk around naked in the centre of Amsterdam and if somebody is complaining and if the police is willing to arrest you and if they are charging you and if you take it to court and if you are convicted it will cost you something between EUR 2,00 and EUR 225,00 plus the costs of the session of the court. I think you will have a better chance to win a lottery or have a car-accident. In the early 60s we were not that liberal. It was not allowed to be naked or having sexual activities at the beach. Even kissing was "not done". Near The Hague there was a very active beach-patrol of the police. They wrer patrolling the beach in jeeps and acted as lifeguard and of guardian of the public moral. In Holland it is usual to set-up against the dunes, where the sand is soft and warm and you are out of the way of strollers. Because it is always a little windy at the coast, we were used to making a sandpit with a small rampart-like wall around. This keeps the wind out but you are also invisible from the beach. In order to check you out, the police had to drive close to your pit every now and then to see if you were not doing illegal things. Someday I made a trench about 1 meter deep and 1 meter wide, covered with wooden sticks, washed ashore cloth and sand to hide the pit. The next time the police were racing past, they got stuck in the pit and needed a towtruck to get clear. After that they were just patrolling the shoreline. In the late 70s, the first nude beach was allocated, just North of The Hague. It was a stretch of 300 meter and it was at three sides fenced off by a wooden wall, 2 meter high, to allow people pass by without being able to see nude people. After one season the fence did not return and the nude part of the beach was enlarged and a second part was allocated at the South side of The Hague, without a fence. |

Re:Nudity Laws of Europe Date Posted:07/22/2013 02:09:29Copy HTML Saddened to see that the nude beach at Holkham in Norfolk (UK) no longer allows nudity due to complaints of various activities taking place in the dunes. In UK nudity is allowed provided here is no intention to shock other people. So it would be very unlikely that police could take action against being nude on almost any beach; especially if you were just sunbathing or skinny dipping. I hope the nudists keep using the beach at Holkham and that the police take action against those who will most likely continue their 'stuff' in the dunes. Somehow, I doubt it.
Spain apparently allows nudity on any beach. Portugal has some official nude beaches but does not allow it on other beaches. Maritime Police do take action occasionally (and pointlessly) telling people on fairly quiet unofficial nude beaches to cover up. I think they took a look at me once and probably figured it wasn't worth the hassle of stopping one couple on a fairly empty beach. Due to the breakers they would have had trouble landing on the beach in their RIB - and I don't speak Portuguese. I go nude wherever I think I can get away with it - even on busy beaches. Greece seems fairly tolerant on many islands - walk a little distance from the busy part and no one ever seems to have a problem - officially I think it is not allowed. Croatia is great - almost anywhere - but the coast is mostly rock so some padding is required. For most of Europe, I reckon you can go nude on almost any beach - but best to be far enough away form a car park so that you can rely on police or whoever not wanting to trudge along the sand. Maybe I can invoke the Human Rights legislation? |

Re:Nudity Laws of Europe Date Posted:09/29/2026 04:12:11Copy HTML In Germany every park is clothing optional! When I was there women laid out topless most of the time but when they had to walk around they put their top on. Germans would change their clothes at the beach from street clothes to swimsuits.
However, they could layout nude if they were discreet, away from the majority people. I have heard through the nudist history that hippies in the 1970s would take trams in Munich NUDE to the Englisher Garten park. |
