Alvor is good. Thonging is no problem and common for women. No problem for men either - although you will be in a tiny minority.

Skyfireghost: I can endorse Alvor. I’ve been about 5 times and although you’ll not see many other men in thongs (I think I’ve seen 3 others) you’ll certainly find it friendly. I’ve personally worn them every time at both beach and hotel pool. I’ve swum and walked the length of the beach, and have yet to have any of the wrong kind of attention. Women in thongs and cheeky suits are ubiquitous. I’ve never felt out of place.

Just got back from portugal with the wife and i can confirm thonging is excepted there. i wore a yellow desmiit thong on one beach then walked for ten minutes back to the car, and a blue desmiit thong on another beach which was crowded i even went into the sea.

Just back from a break in Portugal - spent time around Lagos area and then Ihla Tavira.  Haven't been for several years and it was good to be back. Lagos area beaches win it for the number of girls in thong and cheeky bikinis - very much the majority.  Great vibe and very relaxed.

On one beach, Praia do Camilo, there was a single girl wearing a g string bikini that she would rearrange to minimise the tops to just covering the nipples and rolled down the already very small front to make a micro bottom to get the maximum tan.  No one batted an eyelid.  OK some of us may have looked for a little too long...

On another nearby beach we did end up next to a German couple - he looked like something out of an 1980s German comedy film - big shorts and vest, the lady in a one-piece.  I made a note not to let my OH choose a spot in future...  Mostly though a nice crowd of people with plenty of thong / cheeky / string bottoms of the girls.  Quite a few topless, especially when laying down - though more often it was the 40-50 age range females. As ever, most guys in shorts with a few in speedo style swimwear.  I wore a modus vivendi low cut camo bikini for most of the time - the smallest of anything on the beaches.  My OH has taken to wearing a striped thong/string bikini again and she looks great.  I did see a guy in a squarecut pull it into a thong, but that was about it.

On a boat trip, we were informed that "that beach is called free-willy beach for obvious reasons"  and told that "nudity is against the law on Algarve beaches, except the designated ones".  That beach was, I think, Praia dos Pinheiros - quite stunning and worth a visit, regardless.   As I understand it, nudity is not illegal in Portugal, but if you offend someone they can make a report to the GNR (national police).  Most people in Portugal seem quite tolerant and relaxed, so I cannot imagine such a report being made, unless perhaps being naked in a busy part of a beach in front of families.

At the complex pool, I spent a late afternoon in a white Desmiit speedo/bikini style suit (front lining removed for comfort).  Got some looks from one or two German girls, but nothing to be concerned about.  Having appeared, showered and swimmed in the white bikini (probably by now semi see through), I thought it would be a bit obvious to then change into a Hom string I had brought with me.  Also a bit concerned my OH would get annoyed by the thong wearing if she had seen me.  I shouldn't have worried as I found her much later on the apartment balcony, naked.

Ihla Tavira has more older people than Lagos area, but with plenty of space it is easy to go nude once you are away from the sunbed and life-guarded area.  There is an official FKK part of the beach, but there seems to be no need to go there.  At one point there was a couple, fully clothed with shorts and tops, who we wondered if they were looking disapproving of me being naked in the sea - a little while later, they had sat on the beach, stripped off naked and gone for a swim.  Goes to show how easily you can misread people.

On another day there were several nude couples etc around and then one lady, around 50 yo, came walking along the shoreline totally naked and carrying nothing.  She walked past guys fishing and right on past the sunbed area, before returning along the shore some time later.  It gave my OH food for thought as she has often commented how it is the men that mostly wander around naked.

My OH went nude for a couple of days and wore a string/thong bikini the rest of the time.  She even wandered into the sea naked - me, I was happy to wander up and down the beach naked and take a swim etc.

Very relaxed, no stress, great places to be.

Thanks tiggerix for a great report. We go to Lagos often and I've been going since the mid 90s and it's always been good. Over the years there's been less toplessness, but thonging has increased. Rarely men though. I am usually the only man in a thong. Last year I wore one on the town beaches. Being with my young daughter and just doing what dads do with kids on the beach just meant I was pretty much accepted as far as I could tell. I've learned not to worry what strangers think of me. I've worn mine at hotel pools too. It's a bit harder there because you're very visible, but if you're swimming people accept it. Why should you? You're not doing anything illegal. The girl reducing her bikini reminds me of a girl I saw a couple of years ago in Estoril who was walking through the underpass in the smallest bikini I've ever seen on anyone. She was probably only about 13 or 14 which was surprising in itself. It wasn't modified either, but it only just covered her nipples and was so low cut on the bottoms that she was dangerously close to exposing her bits. I don't know if it was a thong but it would have been strange if it hadn't been. Very brave I thought. Portugal is just fantastic.

My husband and I traveled to Lagos, Portugal in August 2019 and loved everything about it. My husband doesn't wear thongs, speedos, or anything somewhat revealing (unfortunate.. but to each their own!). He's a guy that prefers to have board shorts almost down to his knees. I felt comfortable wearing only a thong on the public beaches and didn't get any stares or comments, that I can tell haha. It was awesome! I'm assuming Portuguese people are much more open to this type of lifestyle.

Going to Portugal with my girlfriend this September 2022. What’s the tolerance for extreme micro bikinis on women and thongs on men? Specifically at hotel pools? Also will be spending some time in the Algarve (staying in Lagos and have a car), any recommended beaches that are good for thonging?

I enjoyed Portugal many years ago. Very kind people. You should have no problems with your thong in public beaches. I suggest to your girlfriend s very small bikini to pass unnoticed because full bottom is nonconformist. I stayed some days in Lagos. All nice small beaches. Only praia de batata i found busy of bothersome teens with lot of alcoholics.

I've always worn a thong on Portuguese beaches and never had any problems or staring that I know of. Yes, some checking out, but people then just resume with more important things. As a man, you will probably be the only thong wearer. For women under about the age of 45 or so they are the main form of bikini worn and they range from very cheeky to g-strings on beaches. Hotel pools is another matter and it's a bit of a judgement call for you after assessing the situation. I always think that if you feel you are pushing things too far, then you probably are and you're going to be uncomfortable and anxious that you could be told to cover. We've stayed at a hotel and villas and my wife has worn wicked weasels at both without any issues, but even she drew the line at her favourite micro/sheer one. Well, I thought it might be too much; she wanted to wear it around the pool! I have swum in hotel pools in my thongs but been pretty discreet and not strutted around the place mainly because I didn't want others thinking I was some weirdo and not speaking to me. Up to you. Absolutely fine on beaches, possibly different at hotel pools?

Spent the entire afternoon on Praia Tamariz in Estoril today in a thong with my lady topless, a great experience! Of course I was the only guy in a thong but many women in thongs and quite a few topless. No problems at all. I'll be in Sesimbra and Lagos over the next couple of weeks and am thinking I'll have same experience. If anyone else is in the area please let me know of your experiences. Happy thonging!

Just back from a week in the Algarve with my family (wife and three kids 7-11 age range), and went to the beach at the Vale Do Lobo on a few occasions. Each time pitched up in relatively busy areas and stripped down to my black Olaf Benz Sun String. Walked in/out of the sea with family, built sand castles, sunbathed...all the normal Dad activities, carried out as though I was wearing dork shorts like the rest of the men at the beach (saw one Speedo but that was all).
Apart from the initial slightly longer look of surprise of a thong wearing guy, everyone around carried on as normal, no stares, obvious comments or laughs etc. Such a wonderful experience, similar to Spain (Alicante) last year. Got a great tan (plus tan lines) and feel it has continued to build my confidence to wear at the beaches in England.
In fact a few weeks before I thonged at my local beach in Branscombe, Devon, without any issues either...it was quiet but a few saw but then carried on with their business. Got a cheeky smile from one older lady, but no other interaction or interest. Got a wax before the trip which helped me feel even more liberated. So, all good in Portugal 2023. Happy thonging guys and girls!

Well done Swix. Your experience matches mine - act normally & what you wear no big deal. Last week on the Isle of Wight I only took my g string (choice of two) with me - three separate beach sessions in between prevailing 'orrible weather!

That's great to hear swix. It's such a liberating experience. Great choice of thong. Olaf Ben Sun String is my go to choice to wear at the beach too.

Just back from a very hot 10 days in the Algarve. First time since 2018. What's changed? I have aged and in poorer form than I was back then, so wearing a thong was a braver act. I did though at some beaches and some of the time, but not all the time. It was extremely busy and that part of Algarve is full of very attractive people indeed, which is on your mind to an extent. No negative comments that I was aware of. A few looks, but not exactly staring. When I did wear shorts, I hated the feel of them. It didn't change my mind that thongs are way better for sunbathing and swimming. I didn't see any men in a thong and probably only half a dozen in briefs in the whole 10 days. That was sad. As for thongs in general. It depends on the beach and the time of day, so it varies. I think as I'm tuned into them, it's easier to overestimate as my eye is drawn to them still. However, I would say that on average in the 14 - 30 age group around 70-80% of girls and women were wearing thongs. About 5% in g-string or thin thongs. In the 30 - 50 age group it was about half and half and mostly very cheeky. In over 50s about 10% in thongs or cheeky bikinis. One significant change is the number of girls and women carrying out activities and sports in thongs or walking up and down the beach and many walking to and from the beach in thongs or very sheer cover-ups. Even seen in large supermarkets in the cover-ups or walking through part of the town in just bikinis. This is very new. It was a great holiday, but just too hot and it did prevent a trip to the waterpark, which could have been a sunburn nightmare. Next time, we'll go in the spring or autumn.

Just returned from Vilamoura few days ago. My husband was meeting friends who live on the Algarve to play golf at various courses over 10 days. Needless to say I spent the week tanning, swimming and snorkeling. I had bought a selection of 5 different colour Zip-strings from Tangaland24. These are very small g strings with a zip at the front. The zip can be lowered or raised as the mood takes. There is no top for this bikini. I loved coming out of the sea and stretching out on my lounger and easing down the zip for maximum exposure. It has to be noted that a total waxing is a must. I had a couple of days around the hotel pool which was also most enjoyable.

A few more points to add on our recent Portugal experience: Toplessness is fairly steady. Perhaps slightly more common on all beaches. Young and older. Sometimes thong and topless. Often a woman on her own or a couple of older women both topless, perhaps offering comfort and support with their choice. Middle aged women are wearing thongs or cheeky bikinis more. One piece swimsuits are incredibly rare: just a few young girls or older women. If I ever saw a middle aged woman in a one piece it was usually one with a thong back - which looked very flattering.

Video from a beach in Algarve, Portugal where there are plenty of ladies in thongs. Interesting that there is a man who is either wearing very short shorts or briefs and has them pulled up into a thong. His partner is the one pulling them further up. At this point he may as well be wearing a thong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F8iPaRXOYQ&t=131s
